Trackpad double click

my trackpad on my MBpro17 works correctly except that suddenly the double click does not open files anymore.
I can select with one click, but not open by double clicking. Can only open files or folders via a right hand click then menu option.
Tried changing track speed in preferences, and that might solve it for 1 or 2 clicks.
otherwise it works perfectly.
any ideas? thx

Hi aruiz1,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
After checking the double-click speed using the article below, I'd start by seeing if the issue persists when booted into Safe mode or in a new user account:

  • Magic Trackpad Double Click Speed Inconsistency

I have set the double click speed in the system preferences for the Magic Trackpad at about the halfway point. But it won't stay there.
Every so often, about once a day, I find myself unable to double click and I discover that the slider that controls double click speed has gone to its highest setting. I set it back, and pretty soon the same thing happens again.
I think there's a bug. Please reconfigure the software so that the double click speed setting remains where it was put.

When the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad are used together it is not possible to set the double-click speed independently.
If the trackpad is set to the highest speed the mouse will not double click. Lower the mouse speed and the trackpad becomes hypersensitive, producing inadvertent selection and dragging problems.

  • Trackpad "Double Clicks" on Dashboard Calculator

This is stressing me out to no end. Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, my dashboard calculator double enters every digit I click. I haven't had this issue anywhere else but the default calculator on the dashboard. I can see from the rest of the threads I've read that it is to do with the software development. Has anyone found a solution for this problem? Every thread I read went dead before any solution came about (way too much rhyming in that sentence). I will note that if I "right click" the buttons on the calculator or enter them through my keyboard, it works fine. Please someone tell me I can fix this - I use it all the time!

    Hi Jeff,
I have the exact same problem. Were you able to solve it? I also see weird behaviour in mail which has a lag of a click. If I click on one message the click doesnt register, then I click on another and the previous message click registers. Very annoying.
I went to apple and they set up a new user for me. It does not happen with this new user so it could be something to do with preferences, but noone seems to know which.
The Apple Genius suggested to either backup/swipe and then manually pull all my data back (not a full restore since that would likely re-instate the same problem) or to manually move my data from one user to the other.
Both of these options would be very time consuming so I am hoping there is another way.
I am very careful with what I install on my mac, I have very few apps installed.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Bobby

  • Double-click speed resetting after reboot

    Hi,
Every time I start my MacBook the mouse and trackpad double-click speeds resets themselves to very slow.
I've installed all the software updates, and tried repairing permissions from single user mode, but nothing seems to change.
It's tough to live with because I'm a very fast clicker (drink lots of coffee) and prefer the double-click speed to be set to maximum.
I'm using Leopard (10.5.5) on a brand new 15" MacBook Pro.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
(I'd even settle for a startup script that sets the speed on boot.)
    Thanks!

I have been having this exact same issue for several months now. I followed the instruction re: deleting the .plist files, but the problem persists... however... today I discovered something new, and perhaps it might help with the troubleshooting.
I started my machine today and opened my System Preferences to reset my double-click speeds (before my system finished it's start-up routine), but to my joyful surprise they were already set where I like them (2nd fastest setting). I started working in different programs (Mail, Firefox 3.0.3, and Adium 1.3.2) and noticed that my double-click speed had slowed down. I re-opened System Preferences and indeed... both double-click speeds had been reset to zero.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to have double click on trackpad in Lion?

I am not sure how to enable double click on trackpad in apple as i am used to?

In the Trackpad option of System Preferences, just select Secondary click in the Point & Click panel, then you have choice between different options.

  • Double-click and trackpad

right now, i enable double-click to drag any window in OSX
so if i double-click on the window title, it should allow me to drag the window, but instead it miminize it, so what is the correct way of double-click and drag?
btw, is there way i can simulate middle-click using trackpad?

    well
of course i did check that before making this post
but i just can't get the dragging to work with double-tap
plus there is no middle-click simulation
is there any hack to simulate middle-click on trackpad?

  • Double-Click speed with new TrackPad preference pane

I have an original white MacBook. Ever since I updated to 10.5.6 with the new Trackpad preference Pane no matter where I set the Double-click speed setting (everywhere from slow to fast) I constantly get a double click event even when I single click the track pad. Prior to 10.5.6 the trackpad worked perfectly. Has anyone else noticed different behavior since the update? Any solution to getting the correct double-click speed to stick?

I've got a similar problem, but in the opposite direction.
After the 10.5.6 update, my double click speed sticks to slow.
I can change it and make it faster, but after every boot, it starts up with a slow speed again.
I'm on a Early 2008 Macbook Pro (first multitouch, last non unibody)

  • Single-click registers as double-click, trackpad AND mouse

I did a search here and elsewhere on this and it seems to be a fairly common issue among G4 PowerBook users. These are the threads I found here on the subject just doing a quick search...

I have the same problem and it's really starting to annoy me since I started using this computer more frequently recently. I've owned it since new. It has done this off and on since I bought it. I only used it for travel so I just put up with it but now I'm using it for all E-mail to free up my primary desktop for other needs and this is starting to drive me crazy. The machine originally had Panther on it and when I migrated to Tiger I thought that might fix it. No such luck.
The problem is that quite often when I single-click on something, whether in the Finder or an Application, it registers as a double-click. It doesn't matter if I use the trackpad or a mouse, same problem.
I've tried different "Keyboard and Mouse" settings in System Prefs and nothing makes any difference. I've tried the PMU reset too. No change. I've tried it with the mouse disconnected and I've tried it with two different mice. No improvement. I've even tried it with green eggs and ham but the problem persists!
I've never had this issue with ANY other Mac I currently own (3 others) or have owned in the past (many since 1985). My only speculation is that MAYBE the humidity/static in my environment has something to do with it. I've never noticed an exact correlation but it SEEMS that perhaps I may be having this problem more often when the climate is dry. Possible?
Has anyone found a definitive cause/solution for this issue? Thanks!
    Mike

Glad that worked for you Sup3rL4m3r but I suspect we have different issues. I have no problems with anything except single-clicks and click-drags registering as double clicks with either the trackpad or mouse. I have no issues with my "wallpaper" or with erratic cursor issues, or with anything else. When I upgraded to Tiger as indicated in the original post, I did an archive and install but it did nothing to mitigate the problem.
This seems to possibly be a somewhat common problem based on previous posts I've read on it but I suspect that the lack of any solutions suggests it is a design flaw of some sort that has no solution. Perhaps it is not prolific enough to get any attention. Darned shame since this machine has otherwise been flawless. Kind of like buying a new car that has a hesitation on acceleration that you can't get rid of. Most annoying.

  • Trackpad gestures to double-click/drag to select whole words?

Using a mouse in a TextEdit document, I can double-click a word to select it at once. Double-click/drag alters the selection word-at-a-time. Similarly, triple- and quadruple- clicks might have other handy functions.
What trackpad gestures allow me to do the same word-at-a-time selection?

D'oh! There are mouse buttons in the lower left and right corners of the Magic Pad! So to word-at-a-time select (with the right hand), use the thumb to click-then-hold the lower left mouse button, and the index finger to adjust the selection.

  • My trackpad can't open file with double click

i don't know what's going on, but my trackpad can't open file with double click. i have to open it with right click, open or open with. i've tried to fix it in the system preferences, it didn't work out well.

William - you are wonderful!  I had looked at that - they were set to 'internal' which seemed like RH...but selecting the 'design view' and then reselecting 'use default editor' instead of 'auto-select editor' did it.  THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Double-click not working on trackpad after Mavericks installation

After doing a fresh installation of OS X Mavericks and zapping PRAM, I noticed that I'm unable to double-click using my trackpad (this is true throughout all applications, not just the Finder).  Can anyone advise me on how to remedy this?
My system is a Late 2002 MacBook Pro Retina.
    Thanks,
    Nicholas

You can type Command-Shift-G and type in ~/Library/Preferences
I had some challenges deleting everything here while logged in, so you'll have to do this from another Admin account.
I suggest just doing a clean install if you have the time.  That solved all my problems and reduced my boot time as well.

  • Double click action from trackpad button?

    Hi all,
I've had my iBook G4 for a few months now and last week I've been noticing that a single click on my trackpad button would product doubl click results. This is really annoying when I:
    - try to use a form checkbox and it quickly changes and changes back
    - try to make a selection photoshop and it just disappears
    - try to open a new tab in Firefox/Camino/Safari/etc and two tabs open of the same URL
I'm noticing that if I press on the left side of the button it tends to be a single click and the right (most common) gives the double. Did I accidentally change something in the System Preferences? Any experience on fixing this problem?
Thanks to anybody who can help.

    Hi Eggz
I experience the same here with my iBook G4 12''. It is quite like my three year old nokia cell phone registering double input from single touches all the time. Only the iBook is just four weeks old.
The 'Ignore accidental trackpad input' option in System Preferences is turned on all the time. I unchecked it and it does not appear to have any effect on this double clicking issue.
After four years of heavy TiBook trackpad button clicking (no mouse ever on my laptop), and knowing my friends 12'' PowerBook, the iBook trackpad button feels very lousy. Its unprecise movement/action point and its hollow plastic clicking sound do not live up to the standards I am used to. Ok, it's only an iBook - but it's disappointing anyway.
I will talk to support tomorrow (today a holiday) and get back with news afterward.

  • Cannot open files with a double click !! Trackpad solution does not work, just makes my cursor move slowly. Have not found a solution in forums. Help needed please!!

I cannot open files by double clicking ... have looked at forums and no solution yet !!! Control click is the only way i can open files
"If you go to System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse and Trackpad -  You can set the speed of the double click to be much slower.   Hope this helps someone else with a similar problem. "  this solution did not work it just made my cursor move at a snails pace.
Thanks for any help forthcoming !!!

found this on another websites forum .... it worked
I figured it out. Thanks everyone!
I had to turn on my wireless mouse... And even though I wasn't using my wireless mouse and just the trackpad...I had to turn on my wireless mouse then adjust those settings...Had to turn down the speed. Then Once I shut the mouse off and started to use the trackpad again it works perfectly.
I'm not sure why the mouse settings would change the trackpad settings but it did.

  • Single or double click with thumb doesn't work well on trackpad since upgrade to mountain lion

I'm using a 2009 MacBook Pro recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
The internal AND external trackpad behavior is disappointing compared to Snow Leopard.  Neither one seem to register my thumb single or double click unless I do it pretty hard. For instance, selecting a word or double click to select a line.
A single finger works better but it's inconvenient to change years of training.
Sometimes I tap w/ my thumb on a button or link and it works and sometimes and I get no response until I use my finger.  It's like the trackpad sensitivity is off. Single tap only half works.
I was really efficient with the old trackpad behavior and my thumb.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I'm the OP and I'm the one that listed the problem originally. I spent an hour with apple care and the genius level two guy suggested I wipe my whole system. LOL, for a 40MB app, yeah right. The issue with Safari 6 is javascript, according to yahoo javascript is turned off. If you try to change your classic yahoo mail to the newer version it will give you a javascript turned off error. So for whatever reason Safari 6 has javascript turned off even though it is clicked ENABLED in preferences. Crazy. I did find my solution though and that was to dump Safari 6 by giving myself "read and write" permissions and then dumping the safari chache, plist, and preferences files. Then I installed Safari 5.17 by downloading the dmg from the net using PACIFIST. I had complete directions but somebody at apple decided to delete the whole post.
