Trackpad - Dragging issues?

I recently got a new Macbook Pro to replace my month old one that had a dead hard drive (Great service at the Apple store - replaced the whole laptop instead of the drive without me asking).
I got home, updated the laptop to the new OS and with the new Trackpad firmware. For the first couple days things seemed fine. Then I restored my user from the Time Machine backup and noticed something seems funny with the trackpad.
If you click it's fine - tracking is fine. But holding to drag or select text has things going nuts. Most of the time if you are selecting a large area of text, you click and it starts to select and then it "forgets" as if you stopped clicking. If you press harder on the pad it may resume. Or it will get all confused and you have to stop clicking for a couple seconds and then drag again and things will be OK.
Is this my machine, a problem with the new OS, or what?

Don't know if this is the issue, but what machine did you originally do the Time Machine backup from? If it was originally done from a pre-unibody model, then I believe the trackpad software is different because the older trackpad had a separate trackpad and mouse button, and the new one has a combined trackpad and mouse button. I'm thinking if the older version of the trackpad software was somehow restored with time machine, it might be causing problems.
Unfortunately, I don't know what to do to fix the problem, but my guess is that you're dealing with a software problem rather than a hardware problem.
Good luck!

  • Trackpad drag issues

Bought a new MBP about four months ago and am suddenly having problems with the trackpad. It works smoothly in all but one situation: when I hold-click to drag the performance becomes erratic (drags for a brief second and then drops) unless I make a concerted effort to press hard. Even more oddly, the issue isn't consistent. Sometimes the trackpad will seem fine and sometimes it can't drag anything for more than a split second. I would think the problem was user misuse but I'm making sure not to touch the trackpad with any other part of my hand and the pressure I have to put on the trackpad to ensure dragging seems inordinately high (and doesn't always ensure that the drag sticks anyway). I've seen some mention that oily or moist hands might affect the performance so I've been trying to wipe down the pad and my hands before every use, but that's not doing much good. Any advice?

It seems like my problem has now been fixed. I downloaded the magic track pad multitouch update software from the apple website and installed. Surprisingly, this software was not picked up by an automatic 'software update' check just prior to downloading the specific update.
After restarting my machine, everything seems to be working OK. As the initial problem was sporadic, I will reserve my final verdict for few days.

  • Magic Trackpad Dragging Issue

I have dragging turned on and drag lock turned off. whenever I double-tap something to drag it, I have to release my finger for about 1 second before it releases the drag lock. This is really annoying, as I want it to release as soon as I release my finger. Can I change this?

I've found that changing  the Three finger gesture to Dragging is the easiest way to drag.

    hi,
my magic trackpad has issue with 3 finger swipe between applications or swipe issue after OS X 10.8.1 update.
Anyone facing the same issue? Thanks.

Did you check System Preferences - Trackpad ? Also I'm not sure exactly what 3 fingered swipe are you referring to?

  • Magic trackpad drag lock issue

I love the trackpad and purchased one for work, it has completely replaced my mouse and the only problem I have with it is that from time to time it gets stuck in the click and drag mode, my work being highly browser intensive and it is rather annoying to move my mouse and have everything selected. even worse is when I happened to click on a tab within a safari window, since it will not release it, that window gets dragged where ever I point. When this happens I cannot find a way to release the lock.
I have already turned off drag lock and have just turned off drag altogether to see if it helps. After I can resolve this problem I will be perfectly satisfied with the Trackpad. it is also fun that the trackpad does not have its own place in any part of the apple support site & forums.

you'd think this issue wouldn't be a big deal, but let me tell you. lol.
aside from losing starcraft games cause suddenly i can't move my units, only select them, this *****. i was painting something in photoshop and, sure enough, drag lock gets stuck and starts painting all over my work. couldn't even hit the undo because every time i moved the cursor to save or close the doc it would just start painting all over again. ridiculous. so i lost i don't know how many hours of work on this painting because i had to just up and restart it.
like i said, the first time this happened it didn't seem like a big deal, but as you can see it can be really bad. fixitz.
at least remove the offending software from the next update until the problem is resolved.

  • Windows 7 in boot camp - two finger click and drag issues

Hey everyone. I have Windows 7 on Boot Camp (MacBook Pro mid-2010, Mac OS X Lion) and I cannot seem to click on a window with one finger, then use a second finger to drag it. Every time I try it brings up the right click menu. Is there any way of fixing this? I want to be able to drag, darn it! Thanks.
    Grant

Having had the same issue on my MacBook Pro with Boot Camp 5.0.5033 on Windows 8, workaround being external mouse, I have found the following:
If Trackpad->Two Fingers->Secondary Click is enabled in Control Panel/Boot Camp, in order to Click and Drag one cannot click any place on the trackpad. One must click bottom area of the trackpad with one finger, and then use another finger to drag.
If Trackpad->Two Fingers->Secondary Click is disabled, Click and Drag works the same way as in Mac OS X: one can click any place on MacBook Pro built-in trackpad with one finger, and then use another finger to drag the window or select a fragment of text. The two fingers Secondary Click, consequently, becomes disabled.
For me Mac OS X-style Click&Drag is more important, so I disabled two fingers Secondary Click, and assigned Bottom-Right-Corner of the trackpad to be Right-Click instead.
Don’t know if the question is still open… Hope, however, the info might be helpful to those having the same inconvenience with Click and Drag under Boot Camp.

  • Trackpad Clicking Issues

I'm having some issues with my trackpad on my late 2011 13" MacBook Pro. The trackpad works fine as far as I can tell if it's being held in my lap. However, if I hold the laptop from the bottom right corner (where the sleep light is), it seems like the trackpad get depressed. When I try to click on the trackpad, it doesn't make a clicking noise like it does when I'm holding it in my lap. Also, when I move the mouse around in this position, it selects things as if I clicked and dragged the mouse around.
I'm wondering if this is an issue because I've had this since March of 2012 and have never had this happen to me before. I've also noticed that when in my lap and I click on the trackpad, it seems not as intense as before. Is this just the trackpad wearing out or something? If I hold the laptop in the bottom left corner (near the battery level button is) the click seems to come back as strong as it was before.

Have you tried to uncheck ''Ignore accidental trackpad input'' ?
It's solved for me some problems you've mentioned.

  • How to get rid of the trackpad drag release delay?

I've had the MacBook Pro now for about a month. First Mac ever, been a PC user for a very long time. I'm converted, I really like the system and Mac OS but still trying to work out some minor usability issues.
The one that really kills me is the delay when I'm trying to drag something with the trackpad, I lift my finger, and I have to wait a second for it to actually release whatever I'm dragging. I can see how this may be useful in some cases, but personally it's annoying. I want it to release instantly and I can't seem to find a setting for this in the preferences. Am I missing something there? If I wanted this type of behavior I would turn on the "Drag lock" option. Anyone know if it's possible to get rid of this delay?
I've had answers saying that it's the sensitivity of the track pad, but I'm pretty sure it's software related as I have Ubuntu installed on another partition and it doesn't behave that way, things drop instantly after releasing my finger.
It would be nice to have the option to turn off/on the delay in future updates.
    Thanks

Actually, that's only partially correct. We aren't talking about drag-and-drop, we are talking about dragging windows around, dragging sliders, etc. That feature is enabled if you have 'Dragging' checked.
The setting you are referring to where you tap to release is 'Drag-Lock'. In that case, the dragging 'sticks' or is 'locked' until you tap again. What we are talking about is if you have dragging turned on, but drag-lock turned off. In that case, it's still locking, but only for about a second or so (or shorter if you tap again to release, just like when drag-lock is turned on.) What we want however is the very moment we lift our finger, we want the dragging to release instantly, no delay or tap needed.
I can't help but think there is some setting in some plist file somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it as of yet. Still looking, but nada so far.
That's what we're trying to find.
    Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

advice needed - trying to get this message was a great feat

Hi, I believe I'm having the same problem as you, Zaby, with the jumpy keyboard / letters / unexpected insertion points. Creating any document on my 2008 MacBook, including in email, I'll be typing and after a dozen or so keystrokes, the letters randomly fly to a line somewhere above and the sentence continues there. Sometimes this overwrites previous sentences (argh!) and sometimes things are suddenly highlighted and overwritten, gone! Spontaneous combustion. (Apple Z restores but it's a horrendously frustrating process.) Then I have to go to the lines above and drag the middle of the sentence back to where it started. And repeat.
There's no discernable pattern. I tried making the lines very short because it happens somewhere into a line but this doesn't always work due to the randomness. Maddening!
My thumbs stay off the trackpad.
When I brought this problem to the Genius Bar, they pointed out that I had a "Crackpad" (which I had figured was normal wear and tear) and told me there's a quiet recall of the cracked keyboard/mouse/trackpad part. They said this could fix the problem. If not, the next step would be repairs to some cable beneath the keyboard costing $500 -- some kind of shorting between the trackpad, cursor and keys type deal.
So the top of the MacBook was made new again (which also fixed my "white key syndrome").
Problem with insertion points persists... up to now?
I've been reading the Forums for about an hour to find suggested solutions to this issue not costing $500. The problem is not so well documented (that's why I'm going into great detail). Aside from reinstalling SMS (?) and PRAM there was no consensus on why this happens or how to fix it. HOWEVER I just followed a suggestion to go into System Preferences and click "ignore random input" in the Trackpad section. I also slowed down the keystroke rate and the repeat rate in the Keyboard preference.
Suddenly I'm able to type this at my normal speed without the flying letters! I know this doesn't work for everyone and I'm quite skeptical that this will last more than an hour. But if the fix was that easy I'll be thrilled.
    cheers

  • HP Envy m6 Keyboard & TrackPad multitasking issues

I'm running on an HP Envy m6 Laptop, with 64 Bit Windows 8 Standard edition, straight out of Best Buy.
I've had this computer for nearly a year now. I honestly love everything about it, from the backlit keyboard to the i5 processor. But there's one thing I always have to work around that I can no longer stand about the thing.
As I am a slight gamer, sometimes i enjoy playing NFS, Minecraft, Assassin's Creed, and whatnot on my PC, I always have to connect a wireless mouse to my laptop, because if I press a key on the keyboard and try to make a gesture on the trackpad, one of the two actions won't work. e.g. if i press W (to go forward) and move my finger to the left (to look to the left in a game), it will only perform the walking forward motion, because it's not accepting both signals for some odd reason. I'd appreciate if an expert could assist me, I've looked through the Synaptics properties, mouse settings, etc. etc., and have had no success in fixing this issue.

  • Calendar error message and click and drag issues

Hi, I'm new, very new. Never had a mac product in my life. Just got a macbook air (OS X 10.9.5) and was about to update to Yosemite when I read all the virulent anti update stuff (599 giving it one star versus 579 giving it more than one) on the app store Yosemite page. Should I take this seriously? But most importantly, will it resolve the issue of the error message in relation to the google calendar (The URL https://calendar.google.com/calendar/dav/xxxx/user/ encountered HTTP error 404), and the sudden loss of the ability to be able to pick up and drag documents which are features of my current experience, both of which issues I have read about on other forums with no definitive solutions.

    Hi Kelly,
I searched our server logs and didn't find any errors associated with your form in the past 30 days. Maybe I didn't use the right keywords since I don't have the error message yet. I am going to do a few test submissions to see if I will encounter any error. The test data will have the name "test test" so you can easily identify them and delete them later. Is that okay to you? I will start my testing once I have your permission.

  • Cannot get trackpad dragging to work

I have gone to System Preferences -> Trackpad and checked off Tap to Click, Dragging, and Drag Lock. However, when I follow the same gestures that are shown on the demo video nothing happens when I try to drag using the trackpad.
If I press the trackpad button I get dragging but if I double click dragging does not start. How can I get this working? I hate pressing the trackpad button!

Well your comment got me to go look for the 3-finger dragging and it also works on my trackpad so I will try it out for a while.
I'd still like to know why the other options simply do not work. I thought this was quite surprising for an Apple product but the more I look around the more I'm finding that sometimes "it just works" is not true at all.

  • Icon dragging issue

I've recently been trying to neaten up all of my files in finder, as I tend to just let everything pile up and be completely unorganized. I typically have two windows upon so I can drag and drop into the appropriate folder. I've recently been having an issue with the drag and drop where my files will drag and drop into the folder I want them to go to, but the thumbnail icons will remain on my screen. I can't click on the icons and I can use programs normally, but I can't seem to get rid of the icons unless I relaunch finder. It's super annoying to have to relaunch finder every single time this happens, and it seems to be a fairly recent development. I have OS X 10.9.3 and this started within the last month or so. Any way to fix this so I don't have to constantly relaunch finder?

The hanging problem may indeed not be related to the earlier problem - but it prevents us looking at the earlier one.
I reproduced the problem with nothing but Mail, Console and Activity Monitor running. I dropped a jpeg onto Mail in the Dock. There was about 3/4 of my 2GB RAM free, shown by Activity Monitor which I brought back to the front - the new Mail window obscured it. After a couple of seconds AM reported Mail not responding (but the beachball-of-death was already running) and SpinMonitor started up. Normally at this stage I would have killed it, but I let it run - and watched it eating RAM! Both RSize and Virtual Memory usage by Mail grew, and the green slice of the pie shrank as the yellow (active) slice grew, until after a couple of minutes there was no more green and the crash reporter took over.
I don't know that the crash report will be particularly relevant; the problem had started long before the crash. Anyway, I let it off to Apple. I have GPGMail installed, so I will see if the problem occurs after I pull out its mail bundle.

  • Adobe Flash Player and trackpad scrolling issue?

I downloaded Flash Player to my mbp yesterday so I could watch some YouTube vids but after the d/l and install my trackpad scrolling became slightly jittery and skipped every so often. It does it on anyhing that is internet related only (safari, app store, itunes store etc.) It got annoying so I uninstalled Flash Player and no more skipping. Does anyone know a fix to the scroll skipping when Flash Player is installed? Maybe a setting that can be changed in flash system prefs? I would like to have it installed but if it is going to continue to make my scrolling skip then I guess I'll have to try to live with the skipping or just flat out live without flash on my mbp. I downloaded it directly from www.adobe.com and it was the latest version. I'm running ML on a mid 2012. Also could be an issue with ML being so new that adobe hasn't caught up yet?

I have similar problems.  It does seem to correlate to Flash running in Safari.  Works fine with Google Chrome but Chrome isn't as fast on OSX.

  • Odd trackpad gesture issues

It always starts when I tap with two fingers to zoom in to read articles. It wouldn't zoom, and everything stops working. Scrolling doesn't work. Going back to previous page doesn't work. Clicking on back button on the top left corner doesn't work either... It's stuck on the current webpage. Entering a new address will not take me anywhere either. It just stays on the same page. If I restart Safari, everything seems to work fine until I use gestures like zoom and going back to previous page (scrolling works). Gestures work on other applications though. It only happens on Safari. If I restart the computer, Safari works fine. But eventually the problem comes back somehow.
I talked to someone at Apple store, and he recommended replacing my trackpad, which will cost around $140... Do I really have to replace the trackpad? I also have Snow Leopard on a different partition, and all the gestures work flawlessly. Furthermore, like I mentioned above, I'm only having issues with the gestures on Safari. Is there any other solution to this other than replacing the trackpad?
    I have a 2010 MacBook pro.

If a repair tech who actually examined your trackpad said you do, why don't you believe him/her?  No one here can answer as we do not physically have access to your MBP to examine or perform diagnostic testing.  The only thing I can recommend is that you check out KB Article: CLICKY CLICK---> http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1248 Intel-based Apple Portables: Troubleshooting unresponsive trackpad issues

Are you saying that the trackpad works in other browsers as well as in the Finder & offline?
