Trackpad gestures to double-click/drag to select whole words?

Using a mouse in a TextEdit document, I can double-click a word to select it at once. Double-click/drag alters the selection word-at-a-time. Similarly, triple- and quadruple- clicks might have other handy functions.
What trackpad gestures allow me to do the same word-at-a-time selection?

D'oh! There are mouse buttons in the lower left and right corners of the Magic Pad! So to word-at-a-time select (with the right hand), use the thumb to click-then-hold the lower left mouse button, and the index finger to adjust the selection.

Double-click, drag, release

I'm having a problem with my track pad when I double-click, drag, and then release, there is a slight delay before my curser is released. Consequently, I'm forever re-dragging things unintentionally. There does not seem to be a setting where I can shorten the release time to zero. I can solve the problem by using the track pad button, but I don't want to do that. Help!

OOOOH! You mean tapping, not clicking. Yes, there is a slight delay. You might want to open up the keyboard & mouse control panel and then select the option under dragging - the tap to release option. I found it more comfortable to use than just letting up off the trackpad.

Double clicking brings up selection box rather than highlighting words

This is a bit of a trivial problem but it's making my editing quite difficult. I'm using Acrobat X 10, with Windows 7.
Normally when I double click on some text, the word that I am double clicking on will become highlighted. This continues to be the case except for in one specific pdf document: now double clicking opens a selection box rather than highlighting text. If I single click I can highlight whatever text I want, but double clicking no longer highlight a particular word. This is very incumbersome for my annotating/highlighting technique. It only happens with this one pdf, any other pdf and the selection tool is back to normal.
Any idea why this is happening for this one particular pdf, but none of the others, or any way that I can make it highlight words via double clicking again?
Edit: On further inspection, the problem seems to be that for this particular document, acrobat reader cannot detect specifc words, only individual characters. When I highlight a sentence, normally the text highlighted would naturally jump to the end of the word, but here it will only start/stop where I begin and end dragging the cursor. I have used the Recognise Text tool, but this did not fix the problem as it said it had already recognised the text throughout the document.

Can you use the "Prompt" section of the Property Palette instead and leave Label as null. Prompts can be aligned to the left, but, without trying it in Forms 4.5, am unsure about your highlight issue.

Why does double-click no longer select a whole word?

I am on the beta update channel and currently using FF 8.0, latest update as of the moment of this posting.
I am not sure when it happened - I think since I started using 8.0 - but double-click no longer selects a whole word. It's the same effect as a single click - simply positions the insertion point where the mouse cursor is located.
This is very aggravating. I thought it may be a bug in the new version (I already posted it to Bugzilla, but hasn't been confirmed yet), Unfortunately, I don't have the old version to cross-check (can I install both versions on one machine?)
Or is it some configuration issue? Or conflict with something else? I've searched and not (yet) found any other complaints about this issue from other users.
Note that I do not have the problem in any other app nor in other browsers that I have installed (e.g., IE, Chrome, Opera, Safari). In all of those, double-click on a word selects the whole word.

OK - I found the culprit. It seems that the Answers.com '''1-Click Answers''' utility had changed its behavior. In its Options on the Activation tab is an option to activate it when using double-click in a browser. I don't remember turning it on, but it ''was'' on. When I turned that option off, the problem went away. Apparently it is not compatible with FF8, since double-click was apparently intercepted, but 1-Click Answers was not activated - the double-click simply became a no-op.
Now that I've turned off that option, double-click in FF8 is back to the way it's supposed to work for quickly selecting a whole word or sentence.
If anyone else encounters this problem, I hope this information will help to resolve it.

Double-Clicking fails to select text

I'm using a mighty mouse (not wireless) with my MacBook Pro. I just purchased it used ... and so I don't know if this ever worked. The standard method of selecting a word of text is to place the I-bar anywhere in the word and double click. Mine doesn't select. A single click does place the I-bar, and I can click and drag ... but I really miss the convenience of double-click to select a whole word. Is there some way to enable this?

what you are saying is that, no matter how fast you double click in a word (for example here in the forum page) you can't get it to select the fill word is that it?
If it is, that is normal, all you need to do is go to the Mouse settings and change the Double Click Speed to a Slower speed (I have in the 4th point counting from the fastest)
System preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Mouse

In SQL Worksheet, when I double click to select whole word with underscore

Hi All
I'm using SQL Developer 2.1 in XP. After I changed various preferences, I fid when I double click a variable such as ls_test_column, it considered it as 3 words instead of one. I know in TOAD there's a setup to consider word with underscore as one word so that when double click, the whole word can be selected. Now I have to use mouse or shift key to select variables with underscore. it's inconvenient.
Does anyone know which preference control this? Thanks.

It is based on the "Use Change of Case as Word Boundry" preference in the Code Editor section - if this is on, then an _ is considered a "change of case" for double click selection, amongst other things.

Firefox will not run - double click on icon, select icon and run/open, opening via start menu are all dead

Problem started yesterday (9/28). While in Firefox, bookmarks stopped working. Closed out FF and tried to reopen the program, and nothing causes FF to launch. Tried double clicking on the desktop icon, single click on the bottom status bar (on XP), right click on icon to open or run, trying via Start -> All Programs -> Mozilla and neither regular or safe mode would launch. Only thing that seems to fix the problem is a full restart of the computer. Tried downloading the newest version via Chrome. When I clicked to run the install, kept getting a message to close all FF windows, even though there were no FF windows open.

Check that you do not run Firefox as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties". 
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
* Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
* "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected
Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program directory.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Double clicking does not highlight entire word in javascript console

when using javascript console - it fails to highlight entire word if it contains underscores.
Here is some sample text as it appears in console :
ERROR - ReferenceError: curr_msg_stream is not defined
if I double clicked on msg which appears in middle of word : curr_msg_stream
it fails to highlight entire word ... it will only highlight msg .... google chrome behaves correctly on this

when using FF this bad behaviour also happens on HTML textfields

How do you turn off select whole word function?

Massively annoying, trying to start an edit on a student paper, say, by selecting part of a word or just the period at the end of a sentence but then having to re-write the whole word, add punctuation back in, and then do your editing. We've been doing this for a long time, now. Computers are supposed to save people time, not create more work for them.

You know that label at the top that says
Adobe Community > Acrobat > Collaboration & Commenting > Discussions
and where I say I'm trying to select part of a word, so obviously with a select tool?
Any other questions?

Replicating windows trackpad gesture in OS-X - drag to edge

While the Mac Trackpad is superior in almost every way, there is one missing feature I loved on my Dell Laptop (Windows 7). It is hard to describe, and thus, hard to search for info on. Basically, on my windows touchpad, I can tap and drag an object (one and a half taps, hold, and drag to move (eg) a window). Identical between Mac and Windows at this point. But - when I drag on my WIndows touchpad, and reach the edge of the physical touchpad, the movement continues indefinitely until I 'back off' from the edge. I think it might be called continuous scroll. This is useful when you need to move the cursor on the screen further than the physical 'travel' of the trackpad allows.
On the Mac touchpad, I've tried turning on 'Drag Lock' in accessibility, and this helps in the one situation where you 'run out of room' to scroll, but introduces the need to always 'single tap' to end the action, which means an extra step for 90% of trackpad activities. I've also got 'with inertia' selected, but that doesn't help.
The most crititcal need for this feature, for me, is when trying to draw an exact selection box around an object when doing graphical work. You start your selection at the top left, then carefully drag to the lower right, but - if you run out of room on the trackpad you have to let go and start again. On my Windows Laptop, I start my selection top left, then drag to lower right, and if I run out of room, the selection just keeps growing until I back off from the edge slightly.

If an Apple engineer has read this, it appears they aren't willing to share their knowledge. Be that as it may, this is what I've discovered so far:
The Snow Leopard link keys can be found in /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/blued.plist. This file can be opened with a Pist editor. In my case, it contains a couple of entries (couplings) for my only Bluetooth device, i.e., the Magic Trackpad, whose MAC address is paired with a couple of entries, which I supposed are MAC "identities" of my Bluetooth USB receiver. The Plist editor shows one 16-bit hex key for each pairing.
Now, in theory, these keys should be copied to the relevant Windows registry entries in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BTHPORT\Parameter s\Keys\
(these entries MUST be accessed running psexec -s -i regedit.exe).
There are two main entries under ...\Parameters\Keys, each coinciding with what I presume are the two (?) MAC addresses of the Bluetooth dongle. Under each of these entries there's a REG_BINARY key whose name is the MAC address of the Magic Trackpad and whose value (the Bluetooth link key both devices share to communicate) SHOULD be made the same as in blued.plist.
Unfortunately, the operation doesn't work. Now my Windows registry contains the same link keys as my blued.plist, but the Magic Trackpad doesn't do anything in Windows (and I don't want to pair it again, or I would be forced to do the reverse operation in blued.plist.
I must be missing something. Are the link keys in blued.plist to be interpreted as big-endian, so that bits should be swapped in the Windows registry? Any advice will be most welcome.

Click drag multi-select in Flex DataGrid

Is there a way to select multiple items in a DataGrid by clicking and dragging? (ie. clicking the top item and dragging mouse to items below will select them all).
I have allowMultipleSelection enabled so I can select multiple items using the shift and ctrl keys, however is there a way to do this with only a mouse click?
I thought allowDragSelection would be the answer but it looks like this is for something else.

the allowMultipleSelection enables a user to use the <CTRL> or <SHIFT> keys in conjunction with the mouse to do multiple selections. The control key allows mutiples one-by-one while the shift key lets you grab a block of folks. To my knowledge there isn't a way to do a mouse-only multiple selection.

Double-click/Drag-&-drop Photoshop files opens application but not file or I get a message saying that some files in Application Support are missing and I have to reinstall. (Photoshop CS/CS2/CS3)

This is most commonly due to installing Photoshop CS/CS2 before doing an archive and install of Mac OS10.3 or OS10.4. One solution is to reinstall Photoshop 7/CS/CS3 after you have installed Mac OS10.3 or OS 10.4. If you have Photoshop 7 and 8(CS), the easiest way to reinstall Photoshop (without disturbing the original installation) is to install to your desktop. After the install is done just trash the Photoshop folder on the desktop. Note: This will only work with Photoshop 7 and 8(CS) but not with 9 (CS2). Photoshop CS2 you must delete the Photoshop CS2 folder. If you have any 3rd party Plugins or presets remove them from the folder before deleting. Just placing the folder in the trash will not work it must be deleted. After reinstalling CS2 you can now put all 3rd party Plugins and presets back in the new folder. --------------------------- Another solution courtesy Anne Shelbourne Open your Previous System folder. Find "Adobe Unit Types". Copy it into: <Your current system Hard Drive>/Library/ScriptingAdditions/ Then reboot your Mac. --------------------------- However, if you happen to be running a non-English version, like Photoshop CS CE or Photoshop CS ME, it appears the missing file does not get installed. You would need to install and delete the international English version first.

The problem you got into is a known problem after updating to Tiger. It is a small 4K file that gets trashed with the update. It is called the Adobe Unit Types. Both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements need this file to function.
One way to get it back is to reinstall Photoshop, the other is to add this file again.

Tap to drag select by whole words using the Trackpad!

I figured out that there is an easy way to drag select by whole words using the Trackpad... just put your mouse over the word you want to start the selection from and ...
tap, pause, tap, tap
... or another way to say it might be ...
tap, double tap
I find this method almost 100% reliable, it's effortless to get the timing right.
Being able to do this now removes the only thing that I've missed about a mouse since switching to the trackpad.

On the trackpad, after double tapping to select a word, you cannot drag to continue selecting more words. And if you triple tap, it selects the entire paragraph. If you double tap to select a word, pause and tap-drag, the selection doesn't change with your dragging. If you double tap to select a word, pause, and double-tap-drag, it starts a drag/drop operation using the original selection.
The method I described allows you to accomplish with a trackpad, the operation that mouse users take for granted - double click/drag to select a word and drag to select more words.
As far as I know, the technique I posted at the top is not widely known. At least I didn't turn up anything with my google searching and have used this trackpad for almost a year without knowing about this trick.
FYI - my trackpad "Point & Click" settings are:

Hi! I would really appreciate some help with AI. Im working on a Mac book pro.
I have previously been working on CorelDraw and have now moved over to AI again.
I dont understand why I cant Click and drag my selection tool over certain objects and then select those objects. When I click and drag the selection tool or any other selection tool, it selects EVERYTHING on the page. I just want to click, drag and select the objects that I want to group together. Is there some sort of setting where I can do this?? I have watched tutorials about the selection tools. The tutorials show that this is possible but for some reason mine isnt doing it...
I hope this makes sense, please please can someone assist me.

This may be relevant to the strangenesses that you encounter.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.
