Trackpad is messed up

Recently my trackpad had been acting as if it is always pushed down (I'm using an external mouse now). How do I fix this issue?

Sounds a lot like a motherboard,
What makes you think the logic board is bad? You said the trackpad does not work. The trackpad is mechanical and part of the keyboard. They are replaced as one unit.

  • Help! trackpad seems messed up...

it's not a question of having the "accidental input" checked, because it's not...
the trackpad is really draggy and slow, it will freeze every few seconds. it's been like this since the purchase of the Macbook on Thursday.
it's possible to use it but every few inches it'll get stuck or unresponsive.
I tried updating to 10.4.6, to no avail. USB mouse works fine.
    any thoughts?
    thanks much!

    z,
Try resetting the power management unit. The PMU also handles some aspects of trackpad control. Here's the link to the instructions:

  • My New MacBook Pro TrackPad is Messed Up

First off, my MBP is less than a week old. When I double-tap on the volume control in most apps nothing happens. All the options are selected in the TrackPad settings. Sometimes when I tap the pad it is not recognized. When I first got the MBP the trackpad worked flawlessly. What's up with this? Is it due to an update glitch?

I'll assume she is not running Lion 10.7 OS. (It helps when you include information about the Mac). Insert the OS installer disk and reboot while holding down the 'c' key. Run Repair Disk from Disk Utility.

  • 2008 Macbook pro left click not working properly after upgrading to 10.6.8

I have a 2008 Macbook pro and a few months ago after upgrading to 10.6.8 my left click has been wonky.
Using the trackpad the left click eventually gets "stuck" or stops responding and I have to push it multiple times before it does anything.  I have tried plugging in a mouse, but when I do so the mouse also behaves the same way.  The only way I seem to be able to get the clicking to work properly is to restart the computer with the mouse attached.
I have seen threads about trackpads being messed up by swollen batteries, but my battery is brand new and looks fine, and the clicking problem extends to an external mouse, so I believe it is something with the preferences.
I tried deleting  com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouchTrackpad.plist   and restarting and the problem seemed to be fixed, but then after about a half hour it returned.
Having to keep a mouse plugged into my macbook is driving me crazy, anyone know a solution?

I started having the same issue after update.  I'm on a MacBookpro running 10.7.2
ICalled apple and they did a remove battery reboot, a reload lion and a option/command/R/P reboot on startup and then the computer started working.  Two days later problem was back.  I then did a reboot and the computer was back to working.  Today the computer worked fine tell it went to sleep.  I had to do a hard reboot to get the Mac up and running and now no left click.  Please help. I can not use the Mac  with the trackpad, a mouse, a Bluetooth mouse, or a digital pad. All so signs of left mouse click not working.  One other item when you go to pick your user at startup the left mouse click works.  Help!

I have a mid-2012 macbook pro with 8 gb ram and 2,6 ghz i7 processor. Everything was great in mountain lion but after installing mavericks my mac decided to act as a windows pc. Very slow at everything, trackpad swipping messed up and so is battery wich at 75% estimates only 2 hours of remaining time. I dont have many apps installed (bellow 10) neither i had hardware problems before. I waited spotlight to finish indexing, i rebboted numerous times in normal and safe mode, i ve tried many things suggested in relative posts but things are not looking better. When trying to repair permissions as some posts suggested i got the following message : {warning the system file SUID "System/Library/Coreservices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and won't be repaired}. No idea what that is so i have no clue how to fix that. Could you help me out plz?  thank you

  • Unable to drag window around

Something very strange happens to me today and I can not figure out how to fix this, so I am hoping someone would shed some light here as it's driving me crazy.
I was working on my MBP today until somehow it got totally frozen and it did not respond to anything I do including attempt to shut down the machine. As a last resort, I had to press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds to shut down the machine.
Upon re-booting my machine, now I notice I am UNABLE to drag the window around (like mail, ical, safari..etc). I can always drag (or move if you will ) the window around by press and hold down my thumb and with another finger. Now all of a sudden, that does not work for me anymore, and the only way to drag the window is to move the cursor to top of the window, tap twice with one finger, then drag.
I know this sound very bizarre and i am totally baffled by this. I was thinking perhaps when I shut it down using the power button, somehow something was not closed properly and it left something in a limbo state.
Would someone please tell me how to fix this? like remove some systems file or plist or whatever... please help as this is most annoying not able to drag the window around.

    @macjack
I removed those two plists you suggested, restarted, it did not help
    @andyball
Sorry for the confusion, I have always been able to place the cursor on the title bar of a window, hold down with my thumb and move with a second finger. Of course, now that does not work. Tapping twice when the cursor on the title bar is the only way I can move the window.
Additional info here, when I plug in a mouse, I can move while holding down the button.
I wonder if my trackpad is messed up.

  • IBook trackpad clicker is messed up... How can I fix it???

Sometime between the time I received my iBook G4 and now, the trackpad clicker got messed up. I have to press down on it really hard to get it to click, instead of just pressing gently on it. Anybody know how I can fix it?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Assuming you have not been eating or drinking around it, check your Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse settings for the Trackpad to make sure the clicking speed is set the way you want it.
Adding a third party mouse could affect the responsiveness of the trackpad.
If you have been eating or drinking around it, or it has been a bag not clear of lint, something might have gotten between the trackpad cracks and caused a short. You can always add a mouse or external trackpad if you suspect this has happened. I would not open the case yourself, however, if you want an authorized service technician to take a look to see nothing is loose or causing a problem inside, they might be able to help you out. As long as the machine is under a year old, if you haven't purchased AppleCare, I recommend you do, which you still can.

  • New Firmware messed up my Trackpad

I just installed the new firmware updates - EFI 1.3 and SMC 1.2. Now my Trackpad doesn't work! Every time I touch the Trackpad it opens the Application Switch window.... one, two, three, or four fingers opens the Application Switch.
What's the deal? I wasn't having any problems with my system before - they came up in the software updates and I just went ahead with the installs... is there anyway to uninstall these updates?

At this point I can't really say it was an issue with the EFI 1.3 and SMC 1.2 updates... but there seems to be a tie to them....
I blamed the update because the night before the flight I ran Software Update which loaded the two updates. After the update, the next time I used the MacBook was on the plane - and was having all the Trackpad issues. I assumed it must have been the EFI and SMC updates.
While on the plane I noticed that the problems would come and go.... and eventually made the connection of my Trackpad problem with being connected to the outlet power on the plane. Every so often I noticed the problem disappeared - and it happened to be the same time the MagSafe power connector was disconnected.
So that might close the whole issue out - dirty power on the plane, right? Not quite... a couple things bother me about this:
1 - The passenger next to me had a new MacBook Pro, was also plugged into the airplane power, and she had no issue at all.... I had asked her if she was having problems, and if she had updated her firmware yet - her response was, no problems and she hadn't installed the firmware updates. So is there a problem with the latest firmware update?
2 - I would expect that the power system of the laptop, with the battery, would act like a UPS to clean up the power. And if there was a problem with the power, shouldn't the laptop be smart enough to switch to battery to protect the electronics from possible damage from voltage drop-outs?
I have a feeling the EFI and SMC updates may have messed something up in the power system - specifically the SMC was suppose to fix issues with the power system and connections to the MagSafe connector....

  • Apple wireless keyboard, mouse and trackpad battery management is SO MESSED UP! HELP!

I have like 2 dozen batteries that I have swapped in the days since 10.8.4. The **** thing just drains in like 4 days. I am using apple wireless keyboard and mouse/trackpad (either at a time) with my macbook pro that is in closed lide clamshell mode less than a feet away from these devices. the batteries are draining like crazy! 3-4 days! they used to work for like weeks! i have heard in another thread that there is some bluetooth driver issue.
i know many of you would come up with things to check for like other wireless devices, etc. but like I said i have been using this since 2011 and only now since 10.8.4 they have gone crazy!
whats even more weird is that i dont think the batteries are really draining. its something to do with the battery management hardware/software that fails to see the power inside. when i remove the currently dead battery and put in one that was indicated having 0% charger i get a magically 50+ % sometimes event 80! a reboot and the figure is something else! since this is happening with all the three input devices i think its something to do with macbook pro.
    any fix?
    Neerav

    SOLUTION:
Put the devices in "Manual paring mode"
    1. Turn device off.
    2. Push and hold in power button until the LED starts flashing on and off.
    3. Try the paring procedure.
    4. It should work.
I went to the apple store and this is what they did. They got the trackpad paired no problem, but the keyboard would refuse to make connection. At first they blamed windows and didn't want to replace the keyboard because it worked fine under OSX. However I made them try one of their keyboards and it paired fine. So they ended up swapping out my keyboard for one of the newer ones and now it pairs with both windows and OSX with no problem!

  • Trackpad on White Macbook

Hello, I recently bought a white macbook last week and let me say Im pleased with the product. Ive been an apple user for many years but never had my own mac, but now I do. So i have been reading in previous posts about the trackpad and cleaning the white macbook and my answer still seems, well unanswered. So when I got my laptop i honestly only used it 3 times before dirt started to form on the trackpad. I wash my hands before each use, but it is still smuged black. I tryed ikear and a magic earaser. now that stuff works GREAT for the screen and the keyboard and palm rest but since the trackpad is a much smoother material it does not work for it. I just bought a protective film for the trackpad and it works. but seeing the black smudge kills me and I knew it was going it get dirty but i didnt know it was after the 3rd time i used it and its uncleanable. please help me. im even thinking of calling apple and sending them it to them and have it professionally cleaned haha..
    thank you!

What happens if you close the lid? Sleep?
In your place I would use sleep state to reset PRAM, as it can resolve your graphical mess.
Your keyboard likely was not powered after SMC/PRAM failure, so you will need to open MBP cover without opening the lid and disconnect battery power cable with insulated tools from logic board, wait for 5-10 minutes, then try to reset PRAM while keeping cover

  • HT3964 My Macbook Pro did not respond to the power button, and I ended up resetting the smc.  After that, it would start, but the keyboard  would not respond, pnly the trackpad.  On the screen there is a symbol with ahorizontal white bar and a row of empt

After resetting the SMC the keyboard is inoperative.  On the start screen appears a traslucent square with a horizontal bar in white, and a row of empty dots below (the same format as for example the brightness symbol).  I cannot turn the Mac off with the power button, only with the trackpad, clicking on the turn off symbol on the screen.
When I try to login with my username, no characters appear as I type.
I can login as a guest, but from there I can do nothing, because the keyboard is still inop and if I wanted to, for example, have the software updated, I need to type an admin login, which is impossible.
    Thanks for your help

  • Trackpad handwriting problem after upgrade to 10.7.4

    Hi,
After upgrade to OS X 10.7.4, I have problem on Chinese handwriting using trackpad on my MBA.
When I press Shift-control-space the handwriting window pop-up.
I am able to hand write and choose characters in the pop up window.
But, the result does not beibg carried back in the Finder or Safari, or even Word 2008.
    Please, Can any body help?
    Martin Sit

    It is just 10.7.4
People are handing out advice to use the terminal as root and clean up the 10.7.4 mess, and I would advise against EVER using terminal unless you are a UNIX Geek like me. There is a reason OSX is a GUI based Operating System - You should never have to use it like a Green Letters on Black Screen computer.... Although that is what we are using, just with pretty graphics and buttons to click instead of typing code and script...
    10.7.4 is a major fail.
I have never seen a release that has negatively affected every Apple User I know - From Mac Pro Intel V.1 to my December 2011 MBP, and everything in between.
No one should be trouble-shooting an OS that has so many random, bizzare, and fatal errors across dozens of systems?
    Did Sandboxing KILL the Mac?
Nothing you do will fix this - Apple needs to fix this. Like you, I have made the MBP usable, but other than that, any system message kills the MBP - first the display, then the HDD, then preferences, then finder....

  • Lion produces weird trackpad behavior in Angry Birds

I upgraded to Lion this week. I know there are all sorts of new trackpad features, but the probem is that it messes up a lot in Angry Birds. For example, the various finger-swipes have unpredictable results; instead of resetting the screen, it might activate launchpad. Or it might jump you back to the "play" splash screen. The pinch and expand gestures might randomly activate mission control instead of zooming the way it did in pre-Lion Angry birds. And quite often, I'm finding that the trackpad stops responding at all! No matter what gesture I use, the bird sits there in the slingshot, unmoved, unless I restart the app. It's weird.
I've adjusted the trackpad settings in Settings as much as possible to accommodate gameplay, but AB still responds unusually to gestures, without regard to either the specified setting or to its pre-Lion performance. It seems like Apple put way too many features into every slight gesture on a trackpad, so it's become LESS intuitive because gameplay gestures trigger spontaneous resets and screen modifications instead of, well, game interaction.

Works for me and thanks i just try to see because i didn't play in Lion and the level that i was stuck in i pass it in the first try so thank you it works for me.But is true playing that game you can't do much gestures same thing happening before lion, just open it play it and close it.

  • MacBook Pro trackpad help - please?

    Hi!
I know there are some answers to this out there but I can't understand them. Can anyone tell me, in very simple terms how I can make the 2-finger scroll work on my trackpad? I bought the MacBook Pro about 4 months ago and migrated my things from my iBook which was about 4 years old. If you can literally give me step by step instructions, that would be amazing.
    Many thanks!

If you have done a migration assistant, some user library files could be messing some things up. Create a new user account on the computer (Apple logo at top left - system prefrences - users and groups - then click the plus at the bottom left.....if the plus is greyed out hit the padlock and enter your password) Create a new user account. Then have a look at the trackpad prefrences in there......are they normal?!

  • Keyboard and trackpad randomly don't work.

Well I'm starting to really hate my macbook pro, there supposed to be amazing then just break all the time.
Now my keyboard and track pad are messing up. Sometimes both of them just dont work atall and if I close the lid and re-open it they work, other times I have to force a shut down.
Before i shut down to solve the problem, and then my trackpad worked but keyboard didnt. Is it my fault? Computer fault? help please.
    Thanks in advance.
P.S: When this happens if I hold cmd alt and esc (For force quit) when i close the lid (It goes to sleep) and I re-open it force quit appears so its like they work they send the right messages etc. but they dont appear untill after it goes to sleep and wakes up.
It can't be my screen 'pausing' or anything like that either cause dock icons still bounce and animations still work etc.
