Trackpad issues on Macbook Pro 15"

Hi!  I'm experiencing trackpad issues with a Macbook Pro 15" Model A1286. The battery had recently swollen after a long and productive life of about 5 years. Assuming this was a fair life/usage for a battery I have ordered a replacement from Apple.
While waiting for the replacement battery and following advice from other users, I removed the battery and have the power lead connected to prevent damage from the swollen battery.  However, the trackpad now only appears to work the cursor movements around the screen and does not register clicks without the battery in place - it's as if it's got nothing to push against.  I'm guessing that the swollen battery may have caused damage to the trackpad, but won't know until the new battery arrives.
Do I just need to be patient and wait for it's arrival or are there any suggestions of how to rectify this please?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

  • Trackpad issues on Macbook Pro, new June 2009

I have been unable to resolve a trackpad issue that began this afternoon on my Macbook Pro. The computer was new in June. I was playing an online computer game, and it seemed that drag was locked on even though I hadn't changed any settings. Movements of the mouse dragged the window. The drag would not release with 1 click, 2 finger click etc. When I tried typing, the letters selected and replaced as soon as I typed new ones. After several restarts with the same behavior occurring, I reloaded the Snow Leopard 10.6 OS. I originally installed it about 2 weeks ago, and it has been working fine until now. After the reinstallation, the trackpad will not register most clicks of the trackpad. It will register taps, but it refuses to let the user click and drag. I have Microsoft Vista installed in Boot Camp and the trackpad is operating with the same glitches on boot camp. Clicks of the trackpad do not register most of the time. If they do, I have to click very hard, and even then it doesn't always work.

  • Screen flicker and trackpad issues on macbook pro 8 2

Hi I have a macbook pro (8,2) 15 inch with a high rez anti glare display.  The display stared to flicker after living my computer open in arch for about 30 min.  I tried rebooting and it even started happening in the boot screen and in mac os x.  The last thing I did before it happened was setup pommed in arch and leve my computer open.
Also this has sort of been asked but my question is a little different.  I am trying to set up my multitouch trackpad.  I installed mtrack from the aur but changing the settings does nothing.  What I want to accomplish is this.  1)  I want to right click by clicking (not tapping) with one finger in the button right corner of my trackpad. 2) I need to disable tap to click!!!! 3) I want to be able to click the trackpad with my thump and use my index finger to drag instead of only my thumb.  for example I want to click on a window border with my thumb and move it around with my index finger while holding down my thumb.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Glad you figured it out.  Sorry to see no one else chimed in.
I have arch on a macbook as well.  I have never seen a need for the many elaborate packages which claim to make these things work.  If they're working then stick with it - but if you need another option, I've had great luck with simply properly configuring synaptics:

Hi, my trackpad works just fine on my account but as soon as I go on another account or on my Windows 7 partition, I can move the cursor but clicking is not working (clicking nor taping)??!!

  • Trackpad update on macbook pro  jsshe

The new update for the trackpad on my macbook pro has given me some problems. For example, I seem to be constantly be highlighting words and documents at some points.
    Anyone have the same problem/issues?

Which trackpad update? I found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL724 but I am hesitant to use it since my model is a mid 2009 version and I'm running 10.6.4 and the system requirements for that are listed as:
    System Requirements
    Mac OS X 10.5.5
    MacBook (Late 2008)
    MacBook Pro (Late 2008)
Can you post the link to the update that worked for you? Are you also running on 10.6.4?
Seems a bunch of us are having this same problem, with the trackpad going haywire randomly. So far the only way I've been able to temporarily fix it is to reboot, which isn't always easy when the trackpad is selecting everything. It's getting rather frustrating when I've got several programs open in the middle of a project!
    Apple, please help!

  • Menu Bar issues on Macbook Pro

I came across this problem with my mac where after logging in I noticed that the menu bar, specifically the battery and wifi icon takes atleast 5-10 mins to appear and when I hover the cursor anywhere on the right side of the menu bar it shows the spinning rainbow. Also the volume button seems to be greyed out as well and usually I have to plug in ear phones and it will go away but only temporarily. This never happened to my mac until today and for some reason I think it has to do with the installation of Adobe CS6 Master Collection. (yes, it was torrented. no, I wont do it again.) I did some slight research and on some website it said that there could be some applications recently installed that could have caused this to happen. If anyone has a solution I would very much appreciate it.

Having the same issue. Macbook Pro 2011, latest Mavericks update ....
Apple menu disappears and reappears when Google Chrome is open/closed. Behaving the same with random programs. Do you have any ideas?? Software is up to date, THANKS!!!

  • [SOLVED] Linux kernel 3.6.2-1 issues on Macbook Pro 4,1

After my recent system upgrade to linux-3.6.2-1, I ran into a couple noticeable issues on my laptop.  The first was the inability to use "mount -i /home/user", which is in my .bash_profile, to mount my encrypted home directory at login.  An error message would respond saying that eCryptfs does not support aes.  I was able to manually mount it with "mount -t ecryptfs /home/user/.private /home/user", but could not figure out the issue.  I also noticed my laptop running a hotter that usual and found that my fans were not changing according to the sensors.  I use macfanctld from the AUR to change my fan speed and killing its process and restarting it had no effect.  I then decided my recent system upgrade may be at fault so I rebooted into linux-lts and the issues were solved.  I then downgraded linux-3.6.2-1, linux-headers-3.6.2-1, nvidia-304.51-4, virtualbox-guest-modules- 4.2.0-6, and virtualbox-host-modules-4.2.0-6 to linux-3.5.6-1, linux-headers-3.5.6-1, nvidia-304.51-3, virtualbox-guest-modules-4.2.0-5, and virtualbox-host-modules-4.2.0-5.  These issues are now fixed on my system with the downgrade and I have blocked them from upgrade in pacman.conf.  I did not notice any other issues.

I felt it was necessary to post this issue, especially if another person also has it, so that it may be resolved in future kernel updates.  If there are any logs or other information people need to help resolve this issue or if I should notify a mod of this or something, please let me know.

After further investigation the issues were easily solved.
Regarding my encrypted home directory, I checked kernel.log and found that ecryptfs did not like the argument ecrypt_key_bytes=16 and that manual mount has the variable name ecryptfs_key_bytes=16.  So I simply changed that in my fstab.  Auto-mounting my home directory works nicely again.
In regards to the fan issue, I had to alter /etc/macfanctl.conf because the output of the sensors command (lm-sensors) contained some negative values which may have affected average temperatures and such.  I excluded those temperatures and played with the constraints more until the fans spun faster when I felt they should.
Still found it strange that some of these issues happened during kernel upgrades, but glad to have solved the issues.

Are you saying you're running Windows in BootCamp or Windows as a Virtual Machine? You can increase the fan speed on the Mac using smcFanControl and use the software OGELTHORPE recommended to observe improvements.
smcFanControl is a Mac application and doesn't work in Windows, but if you set a higher minimum fan speed (which is how smcFanControl works) while running OS X, when you reboot into a BootCamp partition, that minimum speed tends to be carried over.

  • Hard core lefty has major issues with MacBook pro trackpad

I'm a really hardcore lefthanded person. Like everyone I've been getting all the hype about the Magic Trackpad, which is just a standalone version of the trackpad on my MacBook, on the iPhone, iTouch, etc. I touchpad mouse with my left hand.
When I got the machine, I turned OFF all the bells and whistles swipes, etc. of the touchpad except the right click option because all it did was ruin my productivity. I could find nowhere to reverse the strokes to accommodate lefthanded use. Am:
1)I'm dim and don't know where to look for the change or what magic words to enter into the computer help.
    2)It's not possible.
3)Apple doesn't care about creative lefty types anymore.
I hope someone at Apple is listening, because as a 20+ year PC user, (touchpads for 10 years) I absolutely love everything else about the MacBook Pro...
    HELP!

Take a look at Better Touch Tool - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - which enables you to make customizable gestures.
Being a rightie I'm not sure I quite understand the issue. The 'right-click' function can be set to either the right or left corner. The other gestures don't seem to have any sort of 'handed' peculiarities, but then I've never tried them with my left hand.

  • Issues with Macbook Pro Trackpad

I have a 15" Macbook Pro i5 2.4 Ghz, 4GB ram, 500 GB HD (Early 2010) Running Snow Leopard. My trackpad will begin moving on it's own at random. It also decides to right click on it's own at times. It's totally random though, at times it happens frequently, the next day it may not happen at all. Any about what causes this? And how I can fix it?

  • Issues with Trackpad - Physical click - Macbook pro 13"

    Hi everyone!
I have a problem with my trackpad, my macbook pro its about one year old and i rarely use a physical click, few months ago i had to use bootcamp with windows xp and i use the physical click there, i use it about a month only.

  • Issue with MacBook Pro trackpad and Adobe Lightroom 5

I'm using Lightroom 5 on a MacBook Pro (mid 2012).  Whenever I'm in the development tab I am unable to click on anything within the center third of the screen.  If I want to get to the 5th or 6th photo in the bottom pan, I have to use my mouse.  I am able to click on things only on the left and right sides of the screen for some reason.
This only happens in Lightroom.  Any ideas?

    Thanks for the quick reply.
    Lightroom 5.7.1
    OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
I'm not using an external display.  If it matters my MacBook is a 13".
As an example of what I mean, look at the image below.  Everything highlighted in green I'm able to click.  After I'm in develop for more than a few minutes, I'm suddenly not able to right click or left click on anything.  The typical "mouseover" changes don't happen either, such as the subtly highlighting that happens when you mouse over an image in the bottom pain.  As if Lightroom isn't detecting the mouse there at all.

  • Despite EFI update, Trackpad unresponsive on MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013)

Tonight (Nov 11), my trackpad stopped working completely on my MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013 - OS X 10.9). It does not seem to notice anything (clicks, movement, scrolling, etc.). Also my keyboard has stopped working once.
I have the Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update (Version 1.3), which was apparently installed as of November 8th. I've read that it is supposed to fix the problem, which is odd because the issue did not start for me until after I had the update. Would be grateful for some help. Thank you.
(Currently, I'm using my Logitech Cordless Click Optical Mouse as a replacement.)

I also have experienced the same problem even though I have installed the update.
I have asked Apple to ring me for a discussion today, however, not sure what can be done if the fix doesn't do what its supposed to do.
Happy days (my first Macbook pro) not so happy!!!
I would be grateful for any thoughts as to how I can prevent the lockups
    Regards
