Trackpad / mouse click control degrades or corrupts within an hour or longer

Basically, over an hour, sometimes longer - the click of the mouse / trackpad ceases to have any effect.  Using an external mouse, the left-click also has no effect.  Right-click on the external mouse / Ctrl-click on the trackpad generally continues to work. I have generally been in the middle of something so I would proceed as far as I could using only the right-click.
(Of interest, sometimes - like in this forum - the right-click on my mouse and the ctrl-click on the trackpad do not do exactly the same thing - but I think that is just how the page has been coded.)
I am still able to move the pointer anywhere on the screen, that does not seem to be a problem.
I have tried to open the system preferences to see if something was odd in the mouse settings but have been unable to get to the specific panel without the click function.
This is the second time I have drafted this post.  The first time, the problem occurred and I was unable to click the "post message" button at the end of the form.
The only way I can find to fix the problem is to restart my Macbook.  But the problem can recur in less than an hour - I had just restarted before I started the first draft of this post.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour?  Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
W

Hi Barney, thanks for the response.
I went through the "resetting the SMC" troubleshooting before resetting the SMC.  The very last thing they suggested I try was shutting down the MacBook and removing and then replacing the battery.
I could not do that.  As soon as I lifted up the MacBook to get at the battery bay, I could see that the battery was swollen to the point that it (the battery) was no longer sitting flush with the bottom of the Macbook.
I have seen this before it happened when my MacBook was still under AppleCare - that time I discovered it while dusting off my computer area.  That time, they just replaced the battery.
I remembered having read something about the battery swelling recently, and scanned the SMC resetting article several time before returning to your response, where of course I found it.
Seems like you hit on the issue right away: swollen battery which is (I am assuming) placing pressure on the trackpad which is eventually malfunctioning.
My MacBook's AppleCare has expired.  How do I assess whether to buy a replacement battery or just bite the bullet and get another computer - obviously an unplanned computer purchase wouldn't be a thrilling option, but I also don't want to waste money on a battery just to be forced to purchase another computer soon anyway :-/

  • Mouse click control on non-LabVIEW Windows

    I'm using an ActiveX interface to talk to Opus spectrometer software. I can pass data around and start acquiring just fine but each time I run my acquisition LabVIEW software I get a little "ok" popup message from Opus that wants me to confirm acquisition. Is there anyway I can programmatically click this box so it will go away? It is running in a different process than LabVIEW so I didn't know if that kind of mouse control was possible.

    Just check out if pressing Returen (Enter) key closes the dialog?
    If yes then download the llb located at
    http://forums.lavag.org/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=91
    in this llb file you will get the VI to simulate the keypress.
    then as you launch application wait for some time and then simulate keypress and go ahead
    Note: This may not be very robust solution as the keypress will not work if somebody clicks somewhere on screen and application in focus is changed.
    but its quick solution

  • Trackpad Click / Mouse Click

    After installing Leopard...if i try to use the trackpad click it will not work and it stops mouse click from working. Powerbood G4. The mouse click works until I try to use the trackpad click.

    I'm having a similar issue with my MacBook 2GHz. I installed Leopard a couple of weeks ago, been working fine and just this morning, when using Mail, I clicked on a mailbox and it seemed to lock on it as if I was trying to move the mailbox but I couldn't drop it anywhere. I couldn't click on anything else, had to use the keyboard to save work in a few applications before restarting. Since restarting, my wireless mighty mouse works fine but if I ever tap or click the trackpad, mouse clicks become disabled on the trackpad and on the bluetooth mouse as well, forcing me to restart again. All is well as long as I don't tap or click the trackpad. Any ideas?

  • Trackpad mouse function

    How can i get  my trackpad mouse click to function? other functions work fine, have had to set it to "tap to click".....

    Try resetting the PRAM. If that does not help, take it in for testing/diagnosis.

  • MBP Retina- trackpad and mouse click unresponsive

    Just got a brand new MBP retina, 15" 2.6Ghz Quad, 16GB Ram, 500 SSD.
    Been working with it for two days absolutely no issues, working fantastically with both trackpad and a wireless magic mouse.
    Used it this morning for several house, took it to work, turned it on and the mouse is working ie the cursor moved over the screen but i am totally unable to click anything! Forced it to restart (holding down power key as that was all that worked), hasn't cured the problem.
    The trackpad physically clicks so doesnt appear to be stuck, i tried plugging in a wired USB mouse, again can control the cursor but unable to click.
    Running 10.8.2, no new software was installed this morning when it worked fine, so cannot figure out what is wrong with it?
    Any suggestions?????

    Finally got it fixed. Make sure you guys call Apple Support. The first tier tech support is not able to help you because they have not been trained for that You will have to speak to a senior advisor. There will be a lot of deleting of caches involved while in safe mode. After did all that my trackpad and keyboard is working again. Hope you'll get yours working too!

  • Problems after the last Apple Security Update with trackpad/mouse tapping/clicking

    Dear All,
    I do have a MacBook Pro 15 (early 2008), Mac OS X (10.6.8). The logic board was replaced a couple of years ago under Apple warranty (distorted video problem). I am planning to repalce it after the next apple update on the macbook pro line. Before someone asks, I am using Snow Leopard because I still have some programs that needs Rosetta. I did apply the last security update and after I did shutdown and restarted the computer last night, the trackpad/mouse (mighty mouse, usb mouse) is not working properly. I just cannot do the left click or tap on the trackpad. The mighty mouse works perfectly, except the clicking. The same for the trackpad (tapping). I manage to open a pdf file with some keyboard shortcuts. I can use the mouse/trackpad to scroll and zoom in/out the document. I can use the trackpad to rotate the document, etc. Pressing on the might Just can´t tap/clock on the document to select or open it.
    I alread did the obvious thing: command-alt PR, start in safe mode, unplug the power/battery for a few minutes...
    Did you have a similar problem with the last security update. Do you have any suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Carlos

    I have resolved the issue! As I mentioned, I am using a Logitech cordless optical mouse. I connected up my Apple keyboard & mouse and disconnected the Logitech. The problem no longer occurred with the Apple mouse.
    I removed the batteries from the Logitech mouse and disconnected the USB receiver. Restarted the computer, reconnected the Logitech setup, disconnected the Apple stuff, and now it is working.

  • HT201361 After taking the screenshot clicking on my trackpad just acting like right mouse click or 2 finger click. Could you help!

    After taking a screenshot command + Shift + 4, clicking on my trackpad is like right mouse click or 2 finger click. Please help!

    Maybe your trackpad battery is running low? If not I would suggest just restarting your Mac. Post again if those things don't fix your problem and some more involved problem-solving can be attempted.

  • Loud Click when I press the right half of my trackpad mouse button

    Hello,
    I have been using a macbook for the past year, and just recently I get a very load metal on metal click or crunching noise when I press the right side of my trackpad mouse button. I have removed the battery and looked behind to see the trackpad assembly and when I press on the corresponding side of the assembly it also make the same clack or click or bad noise. When I do the same to the opposite side there is no noise. My guess is that there is a spring on that side that has come undone, am I right? If so how do I fix it? I bought my laptop in the US, but right now and for the next few months I am living in Norway (no apple stores) is there a place where I can bring it to in order to get warrentied service? Will apple mail me the part? It ought to be fairly easy to fix. Thanks

    I also had a trackpad 'click' problem ...my complete topcase had to be replaced. Although there may not be an 'Apple Store' in Norway, I'm sure there are Apple certified dealers there that can complete the repair. Here's a list of contact numbers...
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html
    The repair itself (top case) should only take a few hours.

  • Right mouse click on trackpad: DL HERE

    some clever dude (john the geek) over at osx86 has taken the .kext, the .prefPane and some other geeky stuff and put it all into an installer, so everyone can enjoy the right mouse click on the trackpad!
    http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=2834
    keep it real! use at your own risk...although it works perfect for moi.

    it's pretty much a convention not to put a link directly to the installer (the .bin, the .dmg file) when you post on any forum. the reason is so anyone who clicks the link has the chance to decide whether the file is safe or not, or whether she/he wants to download it or not

  • How can I (neatly) control mouse click events in a multi-dimensional array?

    Hello everyone!
         I have a question regarding the use of mouse clicks events in a multi-dimensional array (or a "2D" array as we refer to them in Java and C++).
    Background
         I have an array of objects each with a corresponding mouse click event. Each object is stored at a location ranging from [0][0] to [5][8] (hence a 9 x 6 grid) and has the specific column and row number associated with it as well (i.e. tile [2][4] has a row number of 2 and a column number of 4, even though it is on the third row, fifth column). Upon each mouse click, the tile that is selected is stored in a temporary array. The array is cleared if a tile is clicked that does not share a column or row value equal to, minus or plus 1 with the currently targeted tile (i.e. clicking tile [1][1] will clear the array if there aren't any tiles stored that have the row/column number
    [0][0], [0][1], [0][2],
    [1][0], [1][1], [1][2],
    [2][0], [2][1], [2][2]
    or any contiguous column/row with another tile stored in the array, meaning that the newly clicked tile only needs to be sharing a border with one of the tiles in the temp array but not necessarily with the last tile stored).
    Question
         What is a clean, tidy way of programming this in AS3? Here are a couple portions of my code (although the mouse click event isn't finished/working correctly):
      public function tileClick(e:MouseEvent):void
       var tile:Object = e.currentTarget;
       tileSelect.push(uint(tile.currentFrameLabel));
       selectArr.push(tile);
       if (tile.select.visible == false)
        tile.select.visible = true;
       else
        tile.select.visible = false;
       for (var i:uint = 0; i < selectArr.length; i++)
        if ((tile.rowN == selectArr[i].rowN - 1) ||
         (tile.rowN == selectArr[i].rowN) ||
         (tile.rowN == selectArr[i].rowN + 1))
         if ((tile.colN == selectArr[i].colN - 1) ||
         (tile.colN == selectArr[i].colN) ||
         (tile.colN == selectArr[i].colN + 1))
          trace("jackpot!" + i);
        else
         for (var ii:uint = 0; ii < 1; ii++)
          for (var iii:uint = 0; iii < selectArr.length; iii++)
           selectArr[iii].select.visible = false;
          selectArr = [];
          trace("Err!");

    Andrei1,
         So are you saying that if I, rather than assigning a uint to the column and row number for each tile, just assigned a string to each one in the form "#_#" then I could actually just assign the "adjacent" array directly to it instead of using a generic object to hold those values? In this case, my click event would simply check the indexes, one at a time, of all tiles currently stored in my "selectArr" array against the column/row string in the currently selected tile. Am I correct so far? If I am then let's say that "selectArr" is currently holding five tile coordinates (the user has clicked on five adjacent tiles thus far) and a sixth one is being evaluated now:
    Current "selectArr" values:
           1_0
           1_1, 2_1, 3_1
                  2_2
    New tile clicked:
           1_0
           1_1, 2_1, 3_1
                  2_2
                  2_3
    Coordinate search:
           1_-1
    0_0, 1_0, 2_0, 3_0
    0_1, 1_1, 2_1, 3_1, 4_1
           1_2, 2_2, 3_2
                  2_3
         Essentially what is happening here is that the new tile is checking all four coordinates/indexes belonging to each of the five tiles stored in the "selectArr" array as it tries to find a match for one of its own (which it does for the tile at coordinate 2_2). Thus the new tile at coordinate 2_3 would be marked as valid and added to the "selectArr" array as we wait for the next tile to be clicked and validated. Is this correct?

  • Mouse clicks do not register

    Over the past few weeks for no apparent reason mouse clicks will stop working on my Mac Pro. Generally speaking, clicking will work in the dock, system menu bar and sometimes a click on a background window of another application will bring to to the front. At other times clicking anywhere has zero effect.
    The mouse moves around the screen fine otherwise. I generally use an Apple wireless trackpad but once this problem occurs it doesn't matter what input device I use - a wired mouse, my wireless Wacom tablet, etc. - the problem remains. I can tab around within an application, fill in text fields or open files using the keyboard. But even using screen share and taking control of the desktop from my laptop the problem remains: clicking of any kind does not work. So it's not the input devices or their connections.
    On occasion I will hit command-option escape and force quit all applications and restart the finder and that will work. Other times not.The system remains responsive - no spinning beachballs etc. In the end I'm forced to restart the computer and everything returns to normal.
    Whats-a-going-on? Any ideas?

    Sorry, missed that...
    My point remains the same: if your hard-wired devices are known good, then you have a intermittent problem that resides either in the OS or in hardware.  The nexts step are along the lines of reseating all the boards, running hardware tests, etc. to try to determine if it's hardware or software before re-installing the operating system.
    The other option is to take it to an Apple qualified service guy. If you do that, I'd look for a Mac Pro specialist (someone who works on pro video or audio systems, etc) since most Apple Stores are mostly for iPads, not serious hardware.
    Good luck

  • HELP - mouse click no longer working - Tiger bug?

    Hi Guys,
    I had a weird issue with Tiger (10.4.10) on my PowerBook G4 this evening. I was dragging a file to the trash, and "dropped" it onto the dock by mistake, just missing the trash. I was slightly to the left of the trashcan. I expected the icon to jump back to the desktop, as the place I had dropped it was invalid, but to my surprise, as I moved the pointer across the screen with the mouse button unclicked, a ghost version of the icon was still attached to the mouse pointer.
    I was unable to click on anything, as the OS still believed for some reason that I was dragging this icon around. I used the keyboard to reboot the laptop, and when it came back up, the mouse click was not working - I can drag around, but can't click on anything. This is with the on board trackpad. I also have a bluetooth apple mouse, which exhibits exactly the same behaviour.
    I've rebooted several times (and shutdown and removed the battery), zapped the PRAM. Nothing has helped. I've tried logging in as a different user, but the click still doesn't work with the on-board or external mouse. It's like something within the OS has been corrupted, but I don't know what I can do. I have loads of data on the laptop, so I am not rebuilding. There is something on the help pages about resetting my PowerBook PMU, but I don't think this should be required.
    This is a major, urgent issue for me, as I can't use the laptop until I figure out how to resolve this.
    Anyone - please help
    Thanks,
    Robin

    Thanks for the feedback. Since resetting the PMU fixed the problem, it's not a bug but some conflict in the original setup.
    If you want to report this to Apple, either send Feedback or send bug reports and enhancement requests to Apple via its Bug Reporter system. Join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.
