Trackpad / Mouse issues - jerky

I know multiple forum threads exist for trackpad issues. This thread is for only one of those issues: jerky trackpads that work alright but intermittently jump small amounts (1/4" - 3/4") and freeze for small parts of a second. This is a continual problem, not only after sleep. The same happens when a mouse is used instead of the trackpad. If your problem is different, please post on one of the other threads as it likely is not related.
Background: I had an early MacBook whose trackpad would give the above indicators. It happened whether moving the mouse with a single finger, scrolling with two fingers, or anything else. I since cloned that drive and now have a brand new MacBook. The new on had no trouble with the trackpad until I copied the old drive to the new machine. As soon as I did, the problems resurfaced.
So, the problem seems to be software.
I then reimaged the new MB with a clean install of 10.5 and did a transfer of the old information using the migration wizard. The problems resurfaced. The problem also exists under a different user (I created a new account and tested it: Same problems.)
I've tried switching settings in System Preferences for the Trackpad including tracking speed, ignoring accidental input, ignoring when mouse present, etc. Nothing changed it.
I then removed all applications running at startup. I don't know what else to try before I do a clean image and install a piece of software at a time, which would be very annoying and time consuming.
Any ideas?

When you use Migration Assistant to copy back your old system's applications, preferences, and documents, you also bring back all those application's support files and preference settings. (In other words, you pretty much replace your User > Library folder with your old User > Library folder).
My advice to you would be to wipe the drive, do a clean install, and don't use Migration Assistant. Install all your apps manually and then manually copy back your documents, pictures, and so on.
If you use Address Book, copy Macintosh HD > Users > YOURUSERNAME > Library > Application Support > Address Book to the same location on your new install. This will migrate all your old address book entries.
If you use iCal, do the same with the following location: Macintosh HD > Users > YOURUSERNAME > Library > Calendars. Copy the whole folder and overwrite the same location on your new install.
Depending on how your email is setup, you may need to manually migrate that as well. Macintosh HD > Users > YOURUSERNAME > Library > Mail is the folder you're looking for in that case. If you use IMAP accounts, you don't need to worry about copying the folder. All your email is stored on the server.
It shouldn't take too long to do all of this. 3 hours, tops.

  • Trackpad/Mouse issues, no Scroll/right click

I have just got a new MBP, my second one, and after having to return to APPLE to get it formatted back to OSX, as LION was not working with a number of software I have, (more over the other way around)
I restored my book's apps and doc's from Time Machine, (To be honest I don't know if the problem was before this or not) and when I tried to start to put life back together I noticed my Trackpad, some call it a mouse. The one ON the laptop no longer did anything more than let me move the mouse and I can only click. No Control Click, No Scrolling, nothing it is VERY Frustrating, and I am not sure what to do.
All the fancy mouse actions of LION are great, but I only need Scroll, Mouse Move, Right Click & Left Click.
How can I get these all back online?
Sys Pref did nothing, first off, it only sees MOUSE< and TRACK PAD NOT FOUND, so with mouse all I can change is the SPEED of the pointer and my click rate for double click.
The Accuracy of the mouse is also not what it was, I have to be DEAD CENTRE of any ICON to get the results I need.
This is a real pain, I can tell you that I am beginning to think I should have gone another route when I was picking a new Laptop. After a 10 year relationship with Apple, perhaps it is time to give Bill a call.

I just did the latest update for OSX from Apple, and after the reboot, (Not the first reboot int he process so reboot is not the answer)
After the reboot, everything seems to be back to normal.
SO thanks, And I hope that if anyone else suffers they can get the same results I did.

  • T400 mouse issues after spill

    Hi,
I love my T400. It is the best built, most trouble-free laptop I've owned. Now I have an issue due to a stupid spill.
I spilled a fair amount of beer over the keyboard and immediately powered down. If I had it to do over I would have uplugged and removed the battery, but hindsight is 20/20 as they say.
At any rate, I unscrewed the keyboard and examined it and below it and didn't find any beer residue except on the keyboard itself. I popped all the key tops off and cleaned the entire area with ispropyl alcohol. There was a lot of dirt and hair in there. I think I went through about 70 double-tipped swabs. I also looked at the underside of the trackpad and didn't see anything that looked like it needed cleaning. I didn't remove any ribbon cables.
I'm using the same laptop right now and it is fully functional with the exception of an annoying mouse issue. I'll refer to the buttons as upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right which should be self explanatory. I've never used the upper middle button so not even sure what it is supposed to do.
The first thing I noticed was that the lower left button didn't work and the lower right button seemed to only work in certain instances. I hooked up a USB mouse and that overcame my problem. I soon noticed problems with that where it appeared a mouse click wasn't registering. I also about the same time remembered the upper mouse button on the laptop and started using that.
Generally, my upper left works for any left click functions. However I've notice in Google Chrome, I can't select a tab to change to it. If I left click the tab close, it does close the tab.
If I left click on my desktop, I get the right-click menu. The upper left button produces the Windows Start menu just fine but it is rare that I can get the right-click Windows Start menu. When I can, it is only with the upper right button.
What I'm guessing from all this is, everything that is mouse-related must run through the same hardware regardless of the input used (upper buttons, lower buttons or external USB device) and different software handles mouse clicks differently explaining the differences (good, intermittent or never) in response.
Here's another example. To run the Windows calc program from the Start menu Run feature, normally I would left click run and get the dialog with a drop down menu for recent programs accessed thru Run. Let's say I'm using calc. Simetimes this works normally. Other times when I click Run, I get a single option  "drop-down" menu with that option being "run" which if clicked THEN takes me to the typical drop down menu of recent programs. Other times, I get a context menu which includes the Run option.
With that in mind, I'm wondering if replacing the touchpad assembly is likely to fix my problems or if anyone has any other suggestions other than to not spill beer on your laptop.
    Thanks

    hey beeherd,
replacing the touchpad assembly should resolve the issue. however, i am unable to guarantee that it will.
you could try that, or use an external mouse?
do a reinstallation of mouse drivers and use this manual : http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6629_04.pdf .
open the unit and dry it in a dust free room.

  • X100e keyboard/mouse issues

    Hi Folks,
I've been having trouble with my recently purchased x100e (running Windows 7), and I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me out. I've been looking through the forums and on the web for solutions, but no luck.
Starting a few days ago, I notice that whenever I press a button on the keyboard, a dialog box pops up to ask me if I want to display the Trackpoint Guide. This prevents me from typing anything longer than one keystroke, because the dialog box just comes back when I hit the next key regardless of pressing "Yes" or "No." Additionally, whenever I press a key, the cursor changes from the standard pointer to the scroll icon that would display if I was pressing the middle mouse/scroll button above the trackpad. Furthermore, the middle mouse/scroll button above the trackpad no longer works when pressed.
I have noticed that it is possible to disable the Trackpoint dialog box from coming up by clicking the "do not display this message" option, but the cursor issue persists no matter what. The laptop is hardly a month old. I use antivirus, anti-spyware, etc. I have tried updating the mouse/trackpoint driver and also rolling it back to the originally installed driver, but neither step seems to resolve the issue. I thought that perhaps I had inadvertently changed some of the mouse settings, so I did a factory reset on the machine. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the issue either. I did an extra factory reset just to make sure. I've run anti-virus and anti-malware scans to see if anything would show up, but nothing does. This one really has me perplexed. If there's anyone out there who could offer any advice, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!

    Hi onlylive2x,
    Welcome to Lenovo Forums.
Could you try doing a factory reset without installing any antivirus or antispyware and see if there are any keyboard/mouse issues? This could be some software which is causing a conflict with the mouse drivers.

  • Problems after the last Apple Security Update with trackpad/mouse tapping/clicking

    Dear All,
I do have a MacBook Pro 15 (early 2008), Mac OS X (10.6.8). The logic board was replaced a couple of years ago under Apple warranty (distorted video problem). I am planning to repalce it after the next apple update on the macbook pro line. Before someone asks, I am using Snow Leopard because I still have some programs that needs Rosetta. I did apply the last security update and after I did shutdown and restarted the computer last night, the trackpad/mouse (mighty mouse, usb mouse) is not working properly. I just cannot do the left click or tap on the trackpad. The mighty mouse works perfectly, except the clicking. The same for the trackpad (tapping). I manage to open a pdf file with some keyboard shortcuts. I can use the mouse/trackpad to scroll and zoom in/out the document. I can use the trackpad to rotate the document, etc. Pressing on the might Just can´t tap/clock on the document to select or open it.
I alread did the obvious thing: command-alt PR, start in safe mode, unplug the power/battery for a few minutes...
Did you have a similar problem with the last security update. Do you have any suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Carlos

I have resolved the issue! As I mentioned, I am using a Logitech cordless optical mouse. I connected up my Apple keyboard & mouse and disconnected the Logitech. The problem no longer occurred with the Apple mouse.
I removed the batteries from the Logitech mouse and disconnected the USB receiver. Restarted the computer, reconnected the Logitech setup, disconnected the Apple stuff, and now it is working.

  • Trackpad + CD issues. Help greatly appreciated.

    Hi.
I'm having two major issues with my iBook:
    1)
The mouse trackpad freezes after a certain time of use. The only thing that helps is restarting the computer, after which the mouse gets progressively worse untill it freezes completely again. This takes about 30 min. each time.
Everything else is working fine, including keyboard shortcuts. It's just the mouse that stops working (and that includes the button to, btw).
I've tried resetting the PMU , but that didn't help. Eventually I deleted my entire computer, and reinstalled the system. Didn't help either. I noticed the problem was still there even when I booted from the install CD.
    2)
I'm having problems reading burnt CD's. Even CD's that I just burnt on my own computer, and that are supposed to be fine.
They'll ususally work for the first couple of times after burning, but eventually if I try to insert it, my computer tells me that the disc I inserted is empty(!). But they're definetely not empty, you can see it clearly on the back of the CD to. This is a problem that has always been there, more or less, but I've gotten to a point where I'm really fed up with it. In general the CD/DVD station is really sluggish. Makes a lot of noice to.
DVD's work fine, normal CD's (not burnt) work fine. Burnt CD's usually don't.
Sometimes it helps trying to insert the CD a number of times.
    Help appreciated.

Thanks to both Ronda and Barry for replying.
    Good news first:
As for the CD-issue, I followed the instructions provided on another thread:
hey all you are not going to believe this. I turned the ibook upside down with the drive open and there is a small metal disk all i did was clean this with alcohol and cottton. Fixed it must be some sort of electrical or magnetic switch. i hope this helps
I can confirm that works. Been with this problem for almost 2 months on my Toshiba combo drive, and tried everything (hardware and software) but cleaning the little metal contact made the problem go away. It seems like it is an electrical connection that fails when dirty.
All you have to do is open the tray, and look for a little circular metal contact near the center of the tray (in the opposite side of the tray from the one you put discs into, this is, the bottom side). Clean it with a soft cloth and you're all set! Insert a disc and it will play.
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68aa52cb
And it worked! As for now, my computer is recognizing the same CD's that it wouldn't right before I cleaned it. So I think that problem is gone now.
    To Barry:
I was having bigger problems reading CD's burnt on other computers than for those burnt on my own. Those from my own computer would usually work for a couple of times (or untill the next time I restarted my computer). But who knows, maybe the solution above will work for you sons computer as well.
    Now the mouse issue:
I haven't booted from OS 9, but I guess booting from a CD gives me the same info. And the problem was still there when I booted from the CD.
I also tried the instructions provided on another thread, but sadly it didn't work for me:
scott raymoure, "dead trackpad", 08:45pm Jun 5, 2005 CDT
But I still have a feeling it might be a software issue:
    1) Rebooting the computer helps, after which the mouse works for about 30 min. Wouldn't this be more random if it was hardware?
    2) It often happends just as I perform some kind of task on the computer. Eg, open another tab in Safari, open mail......basicly when I run several small processes at once. At least I think so, of course it could be my imagination.
    3) After erasing my computer and installing everything again, the mouse issue actually got WORSE. If it was hardware, I suppose it would have stayed the same. But the issue is signigicantly worse now.
But one thing especially bothers me:
When I hit the computer to the left of the trackpad, it fixes the problem for a short while. I suppose this is consistent with a Logic Board Failure. But the problem is, I just had my Logic Board exchanged about 2 months ago. Could it be broken already now? If so, can I expect having to change the Locic Board six times per year?
Thanks again for replies to both of you, and good luck to Barry with the CD-issue.
    P.S.
I bought the computer new almost 3 years ago and I do not have apple care protection plan.

  • Trackpad Mouse slow or freezing

My trackpad & mouse are being slow or freezing. This does not have to do with changing the speed of the mouse. I have tried the forced shutdown as told by the online support, but it only fixes it for a little bit. Once your restart again the mouse freezes. The only programs I have downloaded are the CS3 package; would this effect the mouse? Please assist, I don't have a schedule that allows me to call during apple call hours.

    Hi:
I've got virtually the same problem on my new MBP (4 days old!). Purely at random the mouse freezes or goes jerky, any attempt to move an open window gives a jerky motion. It's almost as if something is overloading the CPU but Activity Monitor shows nothing. It happens both with the trackpad and also with an external mouse. If I restart, it's OK for a while and then happens again.
Apart from reinstalling the system - which I'm about to do - has anyone got any ideas? Otherwise it's back to the Apple Store - I'm still in the 14 days so maybe they'll treat it as DOA.

  • "Drag" and "Drag lock" indicator for the trackpad (mouse) cursor

Anyone know how to get a "Drag" and "Drag lock" indicator for the trackpad (mouse) cursor. When using the track pad, I'm often finding that my final click does not release the item I was dragging and then I inadvertently drag it across my screen, as I go to my next function. Would be nice if there was some type of indicator that would pop up on the cursor so you knew when drag lock is active.
    Thanks!

Idiot question - How do I re-install Leopard? No matter what I do, it kicks the disk out on restart. I have tried using the 'install' command on the disk, nothing. It kicks the disk out and boots from the hard drive. I have tried rebooting holding down the 'c' key to force it to read from the drive, it still kicks the disk out and boots from the hard drive. What else should I do?
I researched back further and found another thread where people were complaining of the same drag and drop issue: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6446208
Someone suggested a solution involving permissions. I fixed my permissions. Drag and drop is still not working.
There was also a set of commands to type into terminal that would supposedly fix the issue, or perhaps it was a Spotlight issue that the thread had morphed into. I did that. Drag and drop is still not working.
Am I just totally hosed? Help!

  • Magic Mouse issues after updating to iTunes 11

    Hi,
Just updated to iTunes 11, and immediately after installing I have been losing Bluetooth connection to my Magic Mouse.  This usually happens when I click on an icon in my dock to launch an App.  Specifically, most often when I am launching iTunes.  I've ruled out a battery issue, as I've replaced them and it doesn't make a difference.  I've even cleared my PRAM at startup (CMD+OPT+P+R at startup), since I saw this suggested for similar Magic Mouse issues not related to iTunes. Resetting the ram made no difference in my case.
I've had the Magic Mouse for 2+ years, and this has never been an issue before.  In fact, I've never had any connection issues with the mouse that weren't related to weak batteries, and everything was working great until I installed iTunes 11.  Just wondering if others have had this issue since upgrading to iTunes 11, and if so, how it was corrected?
    Thanks.

Hi, I've not had this issue, but iTunes 11 does seem to be doing something to my Magic Mouse. For example within iTunes 11 I can no longer swipe forwards and backwards. Not sure if there is some kind of hitch with the new iTunes software and the Magic Mouse firmware?

  • Annoying mouse issues of cs6 and cs5.5 on mountain lion

    Hi everyone,
a couple month ago, a mac pro bought, which has mountain lion. i installed cs5.5 and for a while i have started to fight with mouse issues. illustrator, indesing and photoshop, all of them has mouse lag. photoshop has also freezing when i use stamp tool, and zooming in addition. if the screen moves (when i zoom or move the work to any direction of the window or use the tool which makes the screen move), it freeze and mouse pointer starts to spininnig. sometimes it comes back for a while, sometimes not. and then noticed that, forexample zooming or stamping, if i move mouse over the window, it completes the new view and everything is back normal.
but i can't use stamp tool as normal. it can't work fast and freezes mostly. the mouse lag occurs randomly; not only photoshop, but also indesign and illustrator. i looked at the consol messages and found this:
1/23/13 2:41:55.108 PM WindowServer[203]: _CGXGetWindowOrderingGroup: Operation on a window 0x69 requiring rights 0x5 by caller Photoshop
i googled it and can't found anything. when it freezes on photoshop, consol writes this message. screen never freezes indesign and illustrator. so, there is no messages. only mouse lag occurs on them.
i try to use different combination on photoshop's graphics processor settings. but it doesn't work. now i use photoshop by making the graphic processor off.
after that i installed cs6. but for a while, i met the same problems. i reset the photoshop, erased the preferences files. but it didn't work. after disabling graphic processor, i haven't met the freezing, but mouse issues continue in photoshop, illustrator and indesign.
if you  need more info, just ask me.
    thank you all.

    hi,
thanks for your answer. i don't know if it's a driver problem, or not. computer came with wireless apple magic mouse. today, i tried the old mac mouse (the ones without wheel). the same result.
if it worked, i wouldn't use this solution. because i do not have to use old mouse. we have met those problems in windows. i NEVER change any hardware for the problems in mac osx. i LOVE apple and its products, but if it worked, there is no different windows.
so, i don't know where is  the problem, either in macosx or in adobe products. but i'm really tired of this..
i guess this problem because of the video card: ati hd 5700. their website has not any driver for this card suit for mac os.
    appreciate any help..

It sounds like it is time to restore from the backups you made just before making the disk changes.
You can re-partition and restore your backups.  If you didn't make backups first (you were warned that it might damage things and to make sure you had a good backup) then you will need to repartition everything and reinstall from scratch...

  • Wacom or Bluetooth Mouse issues with most recent Beta??

Wacom or Bluetooth Mouse issues with most recent Beta??
All I was wondering if anyone was having issues with Lightrooms beta and pointing devices… while I’m sure the Wacom Introus4 is dying in Lightroom I can’t verify that my Mouse is as well.
I’m using the most recent Beta of Lightroom and Wacom Tablet Driver 615-3a… I’m sure the issue dosent reside with another program because the tablet only stops working in Lightroom. Basically I loose all tablet functionality until I reboot whin I attempt to access the Film Strip… I’ve repeated a few times and with each it dies…

Unfortunately, although you are getting problems with your Wacom and Lr, the solution for the short term is to re-install an older driver for the tablet until Wacom come up with a new update to fix the prolem. This has been a long running problem for users when operating Lr with Wacom tablets.
(I offer this solution not from personal experience, but from what other tablet users have reported in previous threads, and there have been several).

  • "Slow" Leopard with bonus mouse issues!

I have a Mac Mini at work, and ever since upgrading it to Snow Leopard, it's been driving me insane. I haven't had time to deal with it, so I've gotten used to all the annoying performance issues I'm having. Simply put, Snow Leopard is super slow, or "dopey" as I like to say. Every thing I do (EVERYTHING) happens slowly. Here are a few examples of what I'm dealing with. Switching between apps takes too long, from many seconds to minutes for an app to "wake up" again. When I click Print in Numbers, the print window takes up to a minute to appear, and then another 10-20 seconds before I can actually click print. As an added bonus, the mouse does a couple of "nifty" things on a regular basis. The first thing it does is it "locks" the left-click as if I'm holding down the button. I have to click it again to "release" it, so a lot of the time, I'm clicking the mouse three times just to do one click. The downward scroll also stops working intermittently. Now take the goofy mouse and mix it with the dopey leopard, and you've got yourself a wacky guessing-game! Is the mouse button locked or am I just waiting for the dopey leopard to wake up? Let's click again and see what happens! Maybe the pinwheel will show up, or maybe an open window will move halfway off the screen. Or better yet, maybe I'll delete two emails instead of just the one I wanted to! Weee! And by the way, the mouse issues happen whether I'm using a wired USB Mighty Mouse, wireless Mighty Mouse, or a Magic Mouse. Every once in a while, I get brief glimpses of the real Mac Mini - everything zips along beautifully for a couple minutes - but then it goes back to "dopey" mode. I don't even know who this Mac is anymore. My seven-year-old iMac at home works better than this thing. It doesn't do much anymore, but at least it shows me some respect.

How full is the hard drive?
Try resetting the PRAM. Info here:

  • Mouse issue in all products including photoshop cs5/cs6

Hello! I'm having severe mouse issues with all CS5 and CS6 products.
The mouse will only do single click, and when pressing down on any of the mouse button, nothing functions.  So, I'm only able to make a dot with any of the tools! I haven't had this much issues since I installed microsoft products.. please help!!!  Also, there's no preference clear in this program, and I've tried the silly option + ctr+shift+ but it didnt work
    Windows 7x64
    Running trial version cs6

Funny, got the same issue and i can't find anything to help that out. Cyborg RAT9 mouse, Wacom Intuos 4 and even the Apple magic mouse can't make that long click we are looking for. So it cannot be anything else then Photoshop it self. Other Adobe products are working perfect. I'll allready try to reinstall, reboot, cs5, 32 bit 64 bit versions... But noting helps, Photoshop won't work right... like i would buy a +800 euro application that doens't even work as its should
