Trackpad/pointer problems

First off, I've dug around the forums and found the two main articles which refer to trackpad problems, so I've been careful to only use one finger on the trackpad, and I have "Ignore accidental trackpad input" checked.
Routinely after using the trackpad, the pointer disappears, and when it re-appears it won't respond to the trackpad for a second or two (seems longer but it's probably not). I first noticed this in Logic Pro, but it does it sometimes in Finder (or other random OSX windows) too.
My MBP came from the refurb store, so I'm wondering if this is a known issue, or a faulty machine...

I'm here looking for posts on this problem, since it's happening to me as well. Seems to occur primarily in graphic intensive programs, but when doing minor tasks in small files, like moving a selection of text. Can happen in other apps as well - just happened now cutting and pasting. i have nothing connected to the computer...which is also a refurb from apple that i just picked up. RAM issue?

How do I stop trackpad pointer freezing?

I have this same problem. I press the sleep button twice (once to sleep, once to awaken), and I can work again. Freezes on multi-finger scroll/swipes (somtimes on two fingers, always on three). I have tried changing multi-finger option in the trackpad config, to no avail.

  • How to center the TrackPad pointer on startup

    Hi guys (and ladies)!
New on this forum, I confess I didn't have much time to prowl it in search for an answer to the question in the tittle of this post. I apologize for this, but the question itself is pretty straightforward: I'd like my TrackPad pointer to appear in the center of the screen on startup, the way it does on... err, um, you know, the OS from Redmond... You know?
I find it a hassle to have to dislodge it from its upper left corner every time I boot up my MBP, especially considering it takes several attempts to move it, with the Apple menu usually appearing when all I need is to click on a Dock icon...
I read somewhere that an AppleScript could be devised that would remedy to my problem, but I'm not fluent in AppleScript, so if you guys suggest something along this route, please make it understandable for the newbie that I am!
    Thanks in advance...

OK, that's one way to put it, but I already have a PC with Windoze installed (I happen to beta-test Seven like a half-dozen billion other people...), so if I wanted to run Windoze, I'd do it on my other computer.
No, seriously, doesn't anyone know of a script that would center the pointer on the screen of my MBP when it boots up? Like giving it new spacial coordinates (e.g. x=720, y=450 for my 1440x900px display)?
OK, I'll make it simple (???): how do you instruct the pointer to act the way I've just described via AppleScript?

  • Trackpad + Typing Problem

Recently my Macbook has begun acting up a little bit. At random times when I'm dragging the cursor across the screen, it will start highlighting text, clicking buttons, opening things from the dock, etc. Without even clicking the trackpad button, it seems to be activated, and held down. It makes it very difficult to browse the internet, use iTunes, etc., because it will randomly just start clicking and moving songs, opening links, messing up Mail, etc.
Furthermore, there seems to be a somewhat related problem with typing. When this trackpad/clicking problem seems to be occuring, it also becomes very difficult to type. Typing seems to work just fine initially, but then all of a sudden the text I'm typing won't show up on the line. The cursor blinks, and then jumps to a random line of text, highlights a few words, and then pauses. If I continue typing, it either erases the text that was selected, or just keeps typing and adding characters to the middle of a word or sentence I've already typed.
Something definitely seems to be glitching. Occasionally I'm able to 'reset' the problem by moving the cursor to the desktop and firmly clicking on the trackpad 3-5 times. That will stop things from randomly highlighting and usually get the text to work again. It seems to be a problem mostly when I'm using Adium to talk to people, or just after I've typed for a few paragraphs (it's starting to act up right now, actually).
Should I call Apple, or does anyone have any suggestions for fixing the problem with Software, etc.? I don't want it to progress any further, but as a college student, I'm going to be doing a lot of typing and need it fixed.
    Thanks.

Have you tried resetting your Power Management Unit?
Turn your Mac off, and remove the battery. Hold the power button down for about five to ten seconds. Pop the battery back in, and restart your computer.
I had this issue, and it went away right after I did this.

  • Trackpad Pointer issues

Been having issues getting the trackpad pointer to place where I want it on the screen. For instance, if I want to highlight a sentence I can't get the pointer in the correct spot. It takes me probable 10 seconds or so because when I try clicking the pointer where I want it, a pointer menu keeps popping up. The same thing happens when trying to click things on the screen. I am new to the Mac but don't think I am doing anything wrong.
    Anyone else having this issue?

You could try this; Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode.
It takes awhile to come up so patience is a virtue here.

  • TrackPad update problems

I have recently installed the trackpad update onto my MacBook Pro, has anyone else been having problems with the click sticking? this problem has only started occurring after the update and is a pain in the ***... you will go to click something and then it will just hold on and you can click again and it will just reset and click on the new area...

Same issue here. I have Macbook Pro 15" 2.53 GHz Core i5 purchased Nov 2009 with only Apple software onboard. This Mac is lightly used but I keep up with the latest software and OSX updates. Trackpad became unusable after last OSX 10.6.4 update - as far as I can tell. At this point I have an old mouse connected and using that to control cursor which slows me down considerably. Seems to me to be a software related problem.

  • Magic Trackpad - Pairing Problems Switching Between OS X & Windows

My system has Mac OS 10.6.4 (with Magic Trackpad update 1.0 installed) and Windows 7 (with Bootcamp 3.1 plus the "Magic Trackpad/27" Cinema Display" update). The Trackpad works correctly after setup in OS X with all functions working even after reboots. The Trackpad also works correctly after setup in Windows 7 (with passkey 0000) and continues to work correctly with the supported features with multiple reboots into Windows 7.
The problem is that after using Windows, when I reboot to OS X the Trackpad will not function. It shows as paired but disconnected and will not stay connected. If I un-pair and then re-pair it will work. And the same thing happen when I switch from OS X to Windows - it shows as paired but unconnected and the only way to get it to work is to un-pair and then re-pair.
I had a similar sort of problem with the Magic Mouse and found that if I un-pair in OS X, pair in Windows, and then pair in OS X it will work with both. But the Trackpad won't work this way, even after trying this. I think the problem is that the Trackpad won't allow paring with two different systems (for the obvious reason) but isn't designed to accommodate the Bootcamp scenario.
I really like the Magic Trackpad and would like to be able to use it on those rare occasions when I need to use Windows without the hassle of reinstalling it each time I boot a different OS. Any solution to this problem?

UPDATE: I installed Vista on Bootcamp and tried the Magic TrackPad driver. It has the same problem. I can get the device to work as advertised on the initial install and reboots in the same OS. But when you switch from Windows to Mac OS X (or vice-versa) the device will not work: in Windows is listed as paired and connected, but does not work. In Mac OS X, it will not connect automatically and does not work. If you manually try to connect the Bluetooth icon briefly shows connected and then disconnects.
I sent a bug report to Apple as a "developer" and they state that it is a known issue. I guess we simply wait for them to get around fixing the drivers at some point in the distant future. Clearly they ignore these forums altogether. The experience has left me disappointed with Apple and their slow and inadequate response to problems. I would rather they devote some resources to getting their existing products to work instead of wasting resources to add iPhone-style displays to Mac OS X. If I wanted buggy drivers and no support I should have just stayed with Windows.

  • Having strange pointer problems with MBP?

I've never owned my own mac before but I've used iMac desktops for years at my college. I recently got my own macbook pro 13" 2.53ghz and have been loving it all day.
I've found one problem though, that seems to really get to me when I'm working in adobe, or even just trying to close a window or play WoW.
Seems, with any pointer device (tablet, wireless mouse, trackpad) sometimes it does not register the click and I keep trying to click the x, fill in a shape, or even just loot a corpse and it won't register it. I have to move whatever I wish to click and then reattempt to click it and it will work. This gets extremely aggravating when drawing with my tablet, it will not allow me to draw a line where I specifically want it because it wont register it.
Could it just be a weird setting I haven't checked or is this an actual issue with the macbook?
(And while submitting this thread it did it again when scrolling down the OS drop down to click the OS and it would not click it)

I can't believe that on three different mac forums, no one knows what's wrong and won't even answer. Why is this? And why can't I just e-mail Apple instead of call?
This is frustrating and I'd rather have this fixed ASAP since I draw for college and I cannot be wasting time moving my screen around just to draw one line.

  • Hovering pointer problems

Since updating my system to the latest version of lion 10.8.5 hovering pointer on icons etc: the system will automatically open it, when sending emails it'll just send it while hovering without any pressure on trackpad altered settings still no changes.? anyone having the same problems, any ideas would be gratefully received. Thinking of reinstalling an older backup.

  • HT201822 Pointer Problems

Hello! For a couple of days I started having problems with my  mouse (it happens the same while using USB or not!). The pointer moves by itself everywhere and it is really difficult to work like this. Can anyone help? I checked the Disk Utility and everything is ok. I already updated the software. What can I do more?
My laptop is a MacBook Pro and the software Mac OS X.
    Thank you so much!

    Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the article below.

You can also get around it by using a USB or Bluetooth mouse and making sure that you are enabling the "Ignore trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present" feature

  • Trackpad/point not working after keyboard removal

Earlier today I opened up my T510 for maintanence. In doing so, I removed the keyboard. After putting everything back together, the trackpoint/trackpad did not work. That includes the the **bleep**-mouse, trackpad, and all mouse buttons. The trackpad wasn't even removed, but I guess the data connection for that goes through the rest of the keyboard (?).
I took the keyboard out several times to make sure the connection was secure and inspect for physical damage. There was nothing.
The obvious thing to do here is replace the keyboard and desperately hope that the problem is not with the mobo connector, but the problem is sufficently strange (keyboard working but not mouse) thatI figured it would be worth posting here to see if anyone has any insight.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Solved.
As I mentioned in the last post, the trackpad connects to the mobo through the cable labled as a speaker wire in the manual (this can be easily seen after removing the keyboard bezel/trackpad from the machine). There is a small latch to hold this cable in place on the mobo end. I had mixed up the secured and unsecured states for this latch, which apparently broke the connection. Fixed that now and everything works.
It's probably worth explicitly pointing out that the **bleep**-mouse and mouse buttons on the keyboard do seem to be depenent on the trackpad being properly plugged in, despite having a seperate connection to the mobo.

  • My trackpad points but clicking does not respond

Hi...my trackpad is malfunctioning.  It points but the clicking does not respond.  Please help!

Here are a few notes I have put together about batteries.   If something helps you, fine, let us know.   If not, post back with anything you can add about your problem.
Whether you use regular or rechargeable batteries you should buy the best. Discounted or unbranded batteries are more likely to give a depleted performance and may be of irregular size, often leading to connection problems.  Apple’s own brand, Eneloop and Energiser appear to be the best.
Rechargeable batteries for a standard Magic mouse are unlikely to exceed eighteen days before requiring a recharge.    Apple may say more in their sales blurb but this is a realistic expectation.   The benefit (if you are organised) is that you will always have charged batteries available.     Regular batteries will give you between 25 and 35 days before they need to be replaced.
Never mix old and new batteries or rechargeable and regular.
Both the above are based on my personal experience, not shutting down my machine and using it for around four hours per day.   Note.   Monitors do not always faithfully report battery strength, particularly with rechargeable ones.
When checking your mouse or keyboard batteries ...
    Turn off the device.
    Remove the batteries,
Clean the terminals both inside the battery compartment and on the batteries themselves.
    Replace or renew both batteries.
Turn on the device.   You should get a blinking green light if the device is paired.
Click the mouse to activate it.  The green light becomes steady.

  • Null pointer problems. Need help

I have a class that scrolls text across the screen. the class is a Jpanel and uses a thread to produce a scroller effect. The panel is created and called in the constructor and uses a String Array.
This application is now a client and its server sends over a new String array as an object to the client uses stream sockets. I wish to use this new Server string array but since no array exists until it connects i suppse thats the reason im getting null pointer exceptions.
What can i do to solve this problem?

Do you get a stack trace printed to the console window? Look at the stack trace. It tells you in which line of your source code the NullPointerException occurred. Go to that place in your source code and find out what happens. Fix the problem in the source code.

  • Mouse pointer Problem with CS3 and windows 7

    Upgraded
to a new PC which has Windows 7(32bit) as an operating system. Installed my Photoshop CS3 and everything seems ok except when I magnify in the navagator panel. Once I zoom in my mouse pointer changes to 3 hands in the navigator panel. I powered up my old laptop which has Vista and my CS3
then matched up the mouse settings in the control panel on the new PC. Used the same usb mouse on both PC's, the older Vista laptop worked fine but the windows 7 PC would get a tripple pointer in the navigation panel when I magnified. In the windows 7 laptop I then set the compatibility for Photoshop CS3 to run in XP mode but the problem did not clear. I see in FAQ for CS4 people have complained about tripple cursers in windows 7 but the replies indicated that the recommended fix did not work. Any help apreciated.
    Tom

Thanks for your solution. I by changing the setting to 125% I am now able to use CS3 without tripple pointers.
My eyesight is challenged so the decrease in text is a challenge but I can change the setting when I will use CS3 so I have a workarount.
    Thanks,
    Tom
