Trackpad sometimes doesn't recognize physical click

Recently the trackpad on my 13" MBP has been disregarding random clicks. It always works when I tap it, but not when I push it down to click. Also, since I use the physical click for dragging, I've noticed that sometimes the click gives out randomly. For example, I'll click and drag over a piece of text to select it, and halfway through it will stop selecting, as if I'd un-clicked.
I think this may be a bug in the new trackpad update that allows for scrolling with inertia. I like the new scrolling, but this is super annoying, and I'd like to switch back if I could. Is there any way to do that?

I have had the same problem. I think mine was caused by either the upgrade to 10.6.4 or the magic trackpad update. Did you download the magic trackpad update which adds functions to the touch-sensitive trackpad? I have tried all sorts of suggested remedies on the forums, but nothing has worked.
I know it's a software issue because when I decided to erase my drive and load 10.6.1, the trackpad worked fine. I noticed the problem with the "physical" clicks after loading 10.6.4 and the magic trackpad update.
I am using the touch-sensitive functions till a solution comes up. It's just annoying because sometimes I'd rather do a physical click. (I get the feeling that Apple is dictating the way of the future for completely touch-sensitive trackpads without the "hard" or physical clicks.)

  • My iMac doesn't recognize mouse clicks... HELP!

Ok, I reset the SMC and PRAM (and repaired permissions)that made the mouse work until I shut down then I would have the problem again when I started up so I would have to zap the PRAM again.  I downloaded Mountain Lion and loaded it thinking this would overwrite any errors but now I can't log in at all. Even zapping the PRAM can't get it to recognize mouse clicks (the courser does move) .  Somebody please give me some advice I have total work stopage and I'm desperate!

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • ITunes sometimes doesn't recognize iPad or Touch

After working properly for a month, my system has developed a glitch. When I connect my iPad, iTunes does not open or mount the iPad. The iPad does begin to charge, but there is no "sync behavior" going on. I tried reinstalling iTunes, and everything worked properly--until I restarted the computer. Then it went back to not mounting the iPad. Reinstalled iTunes again--works properly again. (The same thing happens with my Touch.) Surely I don't have to reinstall iTunes after every shutdown.
This is a 24in Aluminum iMac running OS 10.6.2. I was running 10.6.3, but learned from the genius at the bar that there is some glitch in that upgrade that makes my iMac lock up periodically, and per his instructions I went back to 10.6.2. The syncing problem started about that time.
Again everything is fine after I reinstall iTunes (9.1.1) but anytime the computer is restarted, there is no sync. Any ideas? Do I need to go back to an earlier version of iTunes?

I've been having exactly the same experience, though I've been running iTunes 10.0.1 (OS 10.6.4). My iPad won't mount despite restarting, so I uninstalled iTunes <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1224>, reinstalled <http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/>, and it would work fine for a day or less.
So I just uninstalled again and then installed the previous version of iTunes (9.2.1), and that seems to be working so far. I'll chime in again later with results over time.

  • TrackPad physical click not working after upgrade to Mountain Lion

Does anybody know how to get my trackpad working again after upgrading to Mountain Lion?
I recently upgraded my MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009, Intel Core 2 Duo) from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Everything seems to have gone well, except for trackpad behavior.
The primary problem is that the physical click of the trackpad is now erratic. Sometimes a physical click will work, and other times it will not work.
Note: The "tapping" of the trackpad DOES work consistently. I have confirmed that System Prefs > Trackpad > "Tap to Click" is enabled, and so tapping is not the problem. (The "tap to click" selector does exhibit a unique behavior however--if I DESELECT "tap to click," then the physical click no longer works at all. It looks like the "tap to click" selector can completely disable the physical click of the trackpad, but cannot enable the physical click completely.)
I have also checked the settings on System Prefs > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad, but none of those settings affect the physical click of the trackpad.
I tried zapping the PRAM, but that did not change the problem with physical clicking on the trackpad.
    Grateful for any ideas...

I ended up taking my MacBook to the Apple Genius Bar. The staff were very helpful.
The apple staff said that there is no known link between the upgrade to Mountain Lion and trackpad misbehavior. In my case, they made some hardware adjustments to the trackpad, and all is working properly again.
Bottom line: if you think that your trackpad misbehavior is related to Mountain Lion, you might want to take it to an Apple Genius Bar. If there really is no connection between Mountain Lion and trackpad behavior, then perhaps they can fix it for you (as happened to be true in my case). But if there IS a connection in some way, it would be helpful for Apple employees to see your evidence firsthand.
    Best wishes to all...

  • The Dock doesn't recognize applications

I have a problem that the Dock sometimes doesn't recognize that I've opened an application.
It doesn't show the little dot underneath the app in the Dock and the menus when pressing the application is also not correct since the application is open.
It can be everything from third party apps to Apples Mail app.
    What can I do?

Nevermind, I found another thread about this. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4150205?tstart=0

If the mouse clicks something on its own then it looks like you have a hardware problem with the trackpad or possibly the battery that is right underneath the trackpad.
I have read that the battery can swell and that would put pressure on the trackpad.

    1. Restart
    2. Shut down the computer.
Clean the trackpad with moist not wet microfiber cloth.
System Preferences > Point & Click
Try turning off three finger dragging and then turning it on after  testing.
    3. Is there any Bluetooth device nearby with failing batteries? If so, replace the batteries.

  • Trackpad physical click broken after 10.8.5 update

Yesterday, I did the suggested 10.8.5 update on my one year old MacBook Pro Retina. Since the update, the physical click-action of my trackpad no longer works. I saw similar problems reported here before, but an OS-update can't thicken the battery? The battery reports no issues and works well as ever. I am far from any Apple store with Genius bar or Apple dealer, so what could I try to get the trackpad working again?

    Hello ckkeith65
If you are having issues with AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe then you would need to uninstall iTunes and its associated software in the order listed in the article below and then reinstall iTunes, as it is part of the installer file.

  • Trackpad doesn't engage when clicking

I am able to move around on the trackpad, but when I go to click on an application, nothing happens.  How do I correct this?

If it fails when you try double clicking to open an application it may be that your Double Click Speed is set to high.

  • Macbook Pro 15" USB PORT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE ANY DEVICE.

I got my macbook pro 15" for about 1 year and 2 weeks ago, when I turned on my macbook and put my mouse ( Death Adder) into the USB PORT, my macbook DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. There are 2 usb ports on my macbook, I tried both port and there was only one port work correctly, the other one didn't work at all, I also tried to put my memory stick, external hard drive, vodafone 3g usb, ipod,....into that USB PORT but non of them worked. Is there any one here have the same problem???? Can you guy help me please. I stay quite far away from Apple Store so it is hard to bring it to repair. I tried to reset SMC, Update Software,...but still not work...HELP ME PLEASE...

I can't fault your troubleshooting. Sounds like a bad port.
Home remedies are limited. You can grab a magnifier and shine a flashlight in there. If you see any foreign material, use a toothpick or other non-conductive tool to extract it. If you can, give it a good blast of (dry, canned) compressed air to blow any particles loose.
Sometimes you can trick a flaky USB port into working at least intermittently by plugging in an extension cable or right-angle connector. Play with a device that lights up so it's easy to see whether it's working.
Take a hard look inside the connectors at the end of your Death Adder and other frequently-used devices. If you see any corrosion or bent pins, that's what damaged your USB port.
If the port requires physical repair, it's best to use Apple or an authorized dealer because if they make things worse while trying to fix it, they have to make it right. Joe's Appliance isn't similarly accountable.
If you need more USB ports, ExpressCard to USB adapters are dirt cheap.
    Good luck.

  • X240 freezes, bluescreens, doesn't recognize SSD

As the Lenovo Phone Support was not able to help me I'll try my luck here.
My newly purchased X240 (20AMS20C00) is sadly having some issues:
    - 2-3 times a day the machine just freezes mid-usage. If I was watching video the problem announces itself by playing the last few seconds of audio again and again. At first the system seems to keep responding but the more buttons I click or programs I try to start, the more unresponsive it gets until its completely frozen. --> Feels like a hard drive issue to me
    - Sometimes (today 3 times in a very short timespan) the laptop freezes and then shows a bluescreen "CRITICAL PROCESS DIED). Then it restarts and doesn't recognize the hard drive. Sadly I forgot the exact error message. After a few restarts it boots again.
    Here's my configuration:
Windows 8.1 with all updates installed
    All drivers up to date
    BIOS/UEFI: GIET69WW (2.19 ) according to Lenovo Solution Center
Also, directly after purchasing the machine I replaced the internal hard drive with a Crucial M500 SSD which is running the most recent firmware.
I also did update the BIOS via System Update. Before that I didn't experience any of these problems. But as I updated it on the first day I just might not have noticed. According to the release notes of the BIOS update it was supposed to fix exactly the kind of problems I have now.
A complete system scan with the Solution Center showed everything to be ok.
What else can I do? It's very frustrating because aside from all this I am very satisfied with the laptop, but if I have to worry that it might freeze in the middle of writing an important text it's completely unusable.

I have possibly similar symptoms. I replaced the HDD in my X240 (20ALCT01WW) with a Samsung 840 Pro SSD. I use full disk encryption with Debian Jessie, but I've also run Fedora 20 and some live CDs. After a few hours of usage the filesystem will switch to read-only and dmesg will report a ton of SATA-related errors, incluing a medium error and unrecovered read errors.

This would necesssitate powering the computer off and on. After about three times my SSD got corrupted in some way, and was completely unreadable by the laptop, including in Fedora and some other Linux Live CDs.
I figured it was a problem with the drive, so I submitted a warranty claim to Amazon and replaced it. After three hours of usage the same symptoms reappeared. I put the SSD in another computer and the partition table was corrupt, but the drive could be accessed (more than the X240 could do after the error manifested).
I believe this is a problem with the SATA controller or some other low-level hardware on the X240 (perhaps the CPU's hardware encryption module, as I was doing FDE?). I find it very unlikely that two SSDs failed with only a few hours of usage.
