Trackpad "stutters" on new MPB 5.1 (2.66Ghz 15")

Hi All
I seem to have a (slightly) annoying problem with my new MBP. I've swapped it out twice, but the problem remains, so I wondered if it was common on all new MPB's?
When waking from sleep, after 4-5 seconds, the pointer will stop responding for a second. This also happens if "shut down" is selected from the Apple menu - the pointer will stutter for a second when the shutdown window appears. System profiler reads as follows:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B00
SMC Version: 1.41f2
OSX Version is 10.5.6, fully up-to-date AFAIK.
TIA to anyone who can help.
Si

The rule names can be whatever you want. They will appear on the list in the order in which they were created, but you can change that by highlighting a rule and then moving it up or down using the controls at the bottom of the window showing the rules. The rules are evaluated top to bottom and first match wins, so keep this in mind when deciding on the criteria for each rule and its position on the list.
Note the "Customize" button on the bottom right of the rule list window, click on it to add more items to the list of available criteria.

    Hello,
I bought a brand new MPB, took it out of the box yesterday hooked it on the AC, started it up, got the nice welcome video, went through the language settings, and then when i had to give in my name all **** broke lose.
I got the beautiful black screen with the white letters saying i have to shut down the computer.
Restarted, tried again, this time managed to get past all the settings, started up at last, was about to go and surf on the internet but even before i had the chanse of even doing anything (not touching the mac at all) you guess it right, black screen again. My 20seconds of happyness where gone.
I'm really desperate, what could i do?
Somebody who knows what could cause this, and is it repairable or should i return my MPB right in?
    Thanks in advance

  • New MPB - iPod shows up in Finder but not in iTunes. Help please!

I just completed a 95% successfull migration from my old MPB to my new MPB. iTunes seems to work fine, sees all my music and I have authorized the new mac to play the music.
However, when I connect either of my two ipods I get the same result - it does not show up in iTunes but immediately shows up in Finder. Given the same thing happens with both ipods I suspect there is some silly little setting I have to go through. Can anybody help please?
The MBP is a brand new 13" with the smaller processor. The iPods are a 2nd generation 40Gb and the 120Gb Classic.

So I ended up reinstalling iTunes. That almost solved it, but when I also restored the iPods it seems to be OK.
Must say I'm disappointed that a brand new Mac behaves this way (and ironically it did not even have the latest software installed...).

  • What is apple doing about numb fingers using the trackpad on the new mid 2012 macbook air?

What is apple doing with the trackpads on the mid 2012 MacBook Air, that creates numbness and pain in my fingers.

You have no idea what you are talking about catperson. This topic happens to be on one of the
Apple Support Cummunity conversation. It's called,
Hands go Numb, tingle from trackpad-
Do you even have a 2012 or newer laptop? If not, don't give advise as simple as go see a doctor. Will Apple be paying for my medical bills?
Yesterday is the first time my finger got so painful I could no longer work on my project. I iced it to help numb the numbness, usally the pain subsides when I stay off my laptop for hours however when I start working on it the pain returns and you need your index and middle finger to work that laptop. This is the first time the pain had not gone away, 24 hours later. It feeIs like the tip of my middle finger has a giant splinter in it, very sore! I bought the first edition Macbook Air laptop 4 years ago and never had this problem with my index and middle finger, until I started working on my new Air.
Look at how many people are having the same problem. It can not be a coencidence.  This problem has cost me the use of my finger and the high expense for this new MacBook Air. I'm going to my apple store tomorrow and show them how many people have this problem with numbness. I think this problem goes way beyond giving me a refund for this computer.
Any thoughts after reading other people having the same painful experience?
So What is Apple going to do with the new MacBook Air trackpad that creates numbness in your fingers?
PS: I know the trackpad is made of glass, so I covered my trackpad with a clear cover they sell to put on iphones however that did not slove anything.

  • Anyone having trouble with the trackpad on their new Macbook Air?

I bought the new (2012) Macbook Air 2 days after they were released.  I have been using a PC forever and was looking forward to this being the right time to switch over to the Mac.  However, my trackpad doesnt work well at all and it is to the point where I want to return this thing.  Once the mac notices I am moving my finger it tracks fine, but if I stop for 5 seconds and resume moving it, it will not pickup on the movement and I need to try many times before it starts tracking properly.  This is most annoying and from my point of view makes this otherwise beautiful laptop unnacceptable.  I have tried plugged and unplugged as I read this an issue in earlier mac airs, but it doesnt matter.  It seems like there is a software interrupt that is not a high enough priority and the computer get's busy about something else and forgets about the trackpad.

Turned out the hardware was bad.  Apple exchanged it for a new Mac Air and the new trackpad works great.  Thank goodness it was a defect.  If the trackpads all worked like that I would have been bummed.

  • HD playback stutters on new 2011 Macbook Pros

I just got back testing the new Macbook Pros to see how they can handle playback of high quality HD video from my camcorder and they struggled just like my '08 15" Macbook Pro does now. My test video was 30 sec. long and shot in 1080p at 60fps. Playback on the '11 13" and 15" Macbook Pros stuttered. I thought with the faster CPU and better GPU (on the 15" models), this shouldn't happen.
Should I be looking into the 17" Macbook Pros or even the Mac Pros if I want smooth playback of high quality HD video?

What did you think when you bought the underspecced iMac. Did you actually intended to use it for Pemiere CS5.5 or FCP. if you google CS5 vs FCP, you will see that the majority are moving from FCP to CS5 because of the MPE. As a user of both I will tell you that FCP will not be able to edit your 5D material natively, which means you will have to transcode them to mov files first before you can use them in FCP, and the process will be more than real time on the current specs of your imac. The choice is still yours anyway.

  • Keyboard/trackpad issues - something new i noticed

I'm using my MacBook Pro (non unibody) in no light, and I've been having the repeating keys/touch to click not working/etc issues for a while, but now I notice something new that could have been going on ever since I've had these issues. Typically when Tap to Click stops working, I go reselect it in System Preferences. But it stops working randomly. Now that I'm using it without any light on, I noticed that right before/as things start to mess up, the caps lock light blinks once, every time. Pretty odd.

  • Reinstalling Mountain Lion on brand new MPB Retina??

    Hi Everyone,
I bought my first MBP retina literally 2 days ago. Anyways, last night I saw that I had an update in the iTunes store. The update was for iOS7. Without much thought, I downloaded the update. When it was finished downloading, I clicked "restart now". A few minutes went by and nothing happned. The cursor was gone and everything seemed frozen. So I manually restart the computer.
When the computer rebooted I kept getting some kind of kernel panic on the boot screen. Nothing would happen. So I rebooted and held command + r. I then proceeded to reinstall a new copy of mountain lion because that was the only thing I could think to do.
Everything appears to be fine now but I have a few questions.
    1) I didn't run disk utility and erase the disk before reinstalling a new copy of mountain lion. Is that a problem? Do I have two versions of the OS saved on my hard drive or did the new download just overwrite the previous version?
    2) Why was an update for iOS7 showing up in my itunes store?
    3) Should I worry about having to reinstall mountain lion after literally using the macbook for only a few hours.
    Thanks for your help

No it is not a problem and the new installation simply overwrote the previous one
The iOS 7 upgrade is ONLY for iPhones and iPads and should have had no effect on OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). I am not sure what you actually did because the normal process for installing iOS 7, or any iOS update or upgrade including iPhone and iPad apps downloads to a folder in the iTunes folder. In fact the iTunes store is the only place to get new or updated software for the iPhone and iPad. Do not confuse the iTunes Store with App Store which is a separate application for downloading and installing Mac OS X updates and software. There is an update to iTunes 11.1 that must be downloaded before attempting to download and install iOS 7. I suspect that is what you actually installed, but I have no idea why it could or would mess up Mountain Lion.  For the last couple of days the Apple download servers have been completely swamped by all the iOS 7 downloads and reports of the downloads taking two and three hours are common. The problem may have been related to that, but that is purely a guess.
No you should not be concerned about the reinstallation. As I said I do not know what happened, but you should not have been able to install anything to do with iOS 7 on your new Mac.

  • Thumbs up from a new MPB owner

After 18 months of research, and subscribing to Macworld and Maclife and spending alot of time in my local Apple stores ---- I made the move this past Saturday to a stock 2.16 Ghz MBP Matte display.
I have been using it every day since Saturday and it runs/looks flawlessly. I just applied all of the latest patches, including OSX, and no problems. It runs quiet like a church mouse and no heat. I don't bang the CPU so I may not be the best to speak about non-heat, but I had it on all day Sunday and the top cover stayed nice and cool.
I did buy the extended warranty as my sales person put in his student ID to give me a discount, and also .mac as I was using the demo and I liked what it had to offer. My experiences at the Apple stores by me (NJ) are always great, very friendly helpful people, never try to push more than I need. He even said the 2.16 with 1GB of memory would serve me better than the 2.33 model.
So ---- just wanted to give a heads up that my new system runs like a charm, and I'm very happy I switched to a Mac. I'm a person that likes diversity and I always enjoy using different operating systems. I do like the Mac better than MS though !!
    Cheers....

  • HELP new mpb problems, i want to replace.

So yeah i sold my last macbook to get the new one, big mistake i feel its going to be like last time, took me 8 laptops to get one that worked perfectly, the one i have now has a whine in the right fan, problem is i could only hear it at night or in dead quiet. Also the Keys "C" "D" get stuck if pushed towards the bottom instead fo straight down, the isight turns green occasionally and so on.
I want a laptop up to my standards, im a returning customer i like apple products but their quality control ***** at times. HELP i need advice, if i go to the store they might not consider the sound noise and keyboard problem as major problem to consider an replacement, i find that it ***** to have a one day old laptop up for repair, and to be honest it never feels the same.
Im decieved/saddended i dont know what to do anymore, i dont knwo it theyre going to replace it, and i dont even know if theyre going to repair the fan, i use it in dead quiet alot and when the screen is pointed at me it acts like a satellite dish amplifying the fan noise, its so frustrating i cant get a machine that has no problems, that works flawlessly.
Should i call Customer Relations maybe we can work something out?

i agree the stars arent in my favor i must be the unluckist guy on earth but mean come on it wouldnt hurt anyone to check if everythign is worling before the laptop is shipped out correct?, i mean ive had cases where the colors were messed up (gpu screwed) ive had a case where the latches would not go up, warped keyboards, whining fans, like wow seriously, and its just sad thought im going to have to be forceful... i though with professionalism there would be no questions asked. i mean ti dont wanna be a big a-hole and get a refund just to get the same laptop again. i just want something that works well is it too much to ask?

  • Brand new MPB 15" power source is always "power adapter"

So, my brand new 48-hours-out-of-the-box Macbook Pro has developed a nice little issue. Everything is fine when the power adapter is plugged in, nothing abnormal. Whenever it's unplugged, however, it still says the power adapter is plugged in and the battery is "not charging". E.g., if I click on the battery icon in the menu bar when unplugged (show setting: percentage), these are the first two lines of the menu, verbatim.
    Battery is not charging
    Power Source: Power Adapter
Oddly, percentage is listed and (to the best of my knowledge) accurate.
I've tried an SMC reset many times, nothing. PRAM reset, nothing.
Anyone else with this problem? Seems like a firmware glitch.

Hmm, when I boot up from the restore disc, System Profiler is normal. It shows a "power settings" entry for both the adapter and the battery. From the hard drive, system profiler shows only a settings entry for the adapter, which leads me to believe that the battery settings were somehow corrupted and now only the adapter case is recognized.
Since there's no drop down when clicking on the battery icon when booted from the restore disc, I can't compare that. Note that Sys profiler is identical in both cases except for the aforementioned difference. In both cases, it states that the "AC Charger" is not fact connected when on battery power.
If I end up having to take a 3 day old macbook pro to the genius bar, they better do the right thing and swap it out on the spot.

  • My new MPB is buzzing and vibrating!  HELP.

    Hi,
What is the extended apple hardware test. My MBP just came in the mail 2 days ago. I am hearing a noise and feeling a vibration. I don't know if it is the fan or the HD as you was talked about in a previous posting. I can easily hear the buzz if I put my ear to the computer and I can definitely feel it vibrate under my hands while I am typing -- very annoying. Most of the buzzing and noise is located on the left side of the mouse pad, but also on the right side as well. It seems to me this is not normal. Thanks! I appreciate everyone's help.
    Mary
    :))

My new 15" 2.8ghz MBP is also buzzing.
I don't hear it as much as feel it. I can feel it in my legs if it is on my lap, and of course a feel it through my fingers via the keyboard. I also feel it in the palms of my hands if they are resting on the top of the machine.
I have a 7200rpm drive in mine, so I suspect that the vibration is being caused by the spinning of this drive. I am not sure if this is normal or not since I never thought to feel a display model at the Apple store.
I have an appointment with my local Apple store on Monday to have it checked out. I am not ruling out the possibility that I will have to opt for a change to the 5400rpm drive in order to reduce the vibration, if a replacement 7200 would be the same as the one in here now.
Too bad the solid state drives are still so darned expensive! That would be the best solution!
I would suggest taking your machine in too and have an expert check it out. They would know immediately if the vibration was abnormal or not.
I think the fact that this chassis is a solid block of aluminum adds to the conductivity of any mechanical noise or vibration. Just didn't expect it to be this noticeable!
