Trackpad/Touchpad acting erratically

I recently purchased a MBP in the end of July. Recently the trackpad/touchpad (whatever you want to call it) has been acting erratically. The mouse will move all over the screen, click on what it wants, right-click on what it wants, zoom in/out on what it wants, and has even been making tons of new folders on my desktop because of it's ability to left and right click randomly. When I try and move the mouse by using the trackpad, it simply freaks out and will not move the direction that I want it to. Any insight onto what the deal is? This started happening a few days after a software update.

This describes my current situation perfectly. I have tried:
rebooted with no luck.
Closed all apps and opened them again one at a time to see if that helps.
turned off wifi and back on.
plugged in wireless usb mouse to not use trackpad, still does it.
I had to turn off all the functions of the trackpad (gestures, etc.) to keep it from switching screens but it's still jumping around. it removed things from my app bar, it sent emails before I was finished and created new folders on my desktop.
Is there something within the macbook that is pushing up against it internally? Haven't been able to find any solutions for this yet.

Go step by step and test.
    1. Restart
    2. Shut down the computer.
Clean the trackpad with moist not wet microfiber cloth.
System Preferences > Point & Click
Try turning off three finger dragging and then turning it on after  testing.

  • Magic Trackpad acting erratically

My trackpad started acting erractically today. Anytime I move it across the screen it selects and clicks everything in its path. It is extremely sensitive. I've checked the trackpad settings and it is not checked to be sensitive or to touch to click.
Any ideas how to fix this or is it a hardware problem that can't be fixed? I've since turned it off and am back on my Mighty Mouse.
    Using Late 2009 iMac. OS

There are a lot of us getting this problem Lance.
It looks as though OSX 10.8.2 broke something
Have had to take batteries out of Magic Trackpad now, because even after disconnecting it in Bluetooth Connection, it 'magically' reconnects itself then starts to do its 'magic' clicking all over the place.
Here's a fun thing to try... just hover your pointer over the close button of any open window then just walk away... right away form your computer... come back a few seconds later and the window will have been closed 'magically' for you by your misbehaving trackpad.
Very unlike Apple to introduce a fault like this and not fix it quickly

  • My trackpad is acting goofy.

Simply moving the cursor with the trackpad over a hyperlink will open the link. No clicking is required. Very annoying.

    Hi Stuart,
If you have the Tap to Click feature on and don't know it's on, it is easy to accidentlally click objects. The article below provides more details about the feature and how to enable or disable it. I'll also add another article below it for other things that might cause the trackpad to behave abnormally.
Magic Trackpad: About the Tap to Click feature
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4331
With the Tap to Click feature on Magic Trackpad, a single tap or double-tap of your finger can act as a click or double-click, without having to physically press on the trackpad.
To enable this feature for your user account, follow these steps:
Make sure your Magic Trackpad is paired, turned on, and connected to your Mac.
Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu.
Choose Trackpad from the View menu.
Under "One Finger", enable the option for Tap to Click.
Even with the Tap to Click option enabled, you can still press to click your Magic Trackpad.
    Additional Information
Tap to Click is a user specific preference, just like your Desktop picture or Screensaver. If you log out of your account, you won't be able to tap to click at the logout screen. In addition, when you start up to the Install DVD or Apple Hardware Test, the Tap to Click feature won't be available.

  • Mac Acting Erratically: Please help Safari iTunes Messing Up

Okay I have an Apple PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.3.9 Panther (purchased late Nov 2003 was originally running 10.2.8 Jaguar) and up till a few days ago everything was running smoothly. That is until after I upgraded to QuickTime 7.1.2 and installed iTunes 6.0.5 when the problem started. Somehow my login.keychain for Safari got corrupted and I tried deleting original and making a new one.
Here's what has happened since then:
Any free media I have downloaded like videos or music off free sites (without Digital Rights Management) already still work. However, if I try downloading new stuff the new files don't work.
Since day before yesterday 4 times when I open iTunes it tells me my Library has been damaged. All my music files are still on my hard drive and are still playable but my iTunes Library file is corrupted -- how and why I don't know.
No music appears in my Library nor do any of my videos in .m4v format (iPod format) show up in my Library since then. I trash damaged file and re-import or select add to library and re-add all the media to my Library seems to work fine. I play them and most of them are playable. Even when Library works a few that played earlier have a skipping problem.
In Safari all my bookmarks got deleted -- I had to back, find the websites and re-add them -- fortunately when I closed Safari and re-launched the browser they remained saved the next time I closed and re-started the browser. However, third time (normally when something doesn't work twice they say third time's the charm) well the third time I opened Safari everything got deleted again.
My iTunes Library is acting erratically -- files I download don't work although files I already have are still playable usually except when my programs run across errors that didn't exist earlier.
I have Microsoft Office X 10.1.6 with the PowerPoint X and Excel X Security Updates, the Apple Security Updates 2006-002, 2006-003 and QuickTime 7.1.2 and iTunes 6.0.5.
When I originally downloaded and installed Security Update 2006-001 my Safari completely broke and would stop running and my Dock Menu dissappeared until restart but even then Safari stopped working. Could find no other solution than reinstalling OS X to return my Mac to pre Security Update 2006-001 levels. Not even Disk Utility solved the problem.
iTunes 6.0.2 also caused problems for me (I heard it caused problems on Windows also) the problem on my Mac was Disk Utility stopped working altogether. Fortunately, by deleting the game Chess from my Mac it fixed the problem. Today, I have Chess back on my computer because since my last OS reinstall I just updated my iTunes to 6.0.3 (I think) I now have iTunes 6.0.5 and have had no problems with Chess and iTunes or iTunes and another application like Chess preventing Disk Utility from working -- but now this problem I am describing where my Library erases itself regularly -- sometimes I restart iTunes and the new user wizard shows up and asks if I want iTunes to find my media and automatically add it to my Library when it does I say yes and it re-adds everything but somehow I have 2 files for every song on my computer and it re-imports (or imports) all my music, videos and podcasts back into my Library once and then re-imporitng it again
This time Safari is working but bookmarks are being erased and re-erased, iTunes is acting all screwy, files I download don't work when they should, I tried deleting and re-downloading a video I had saved on my hard drive (that I downloaded earlier) and the exact same file (no changes had been made to the file when it was re-uploaded) had errors playing when the download completed.
Fortunately, I had burned the video to a CD so I can re-copy it to my Mac and when I play it off the CD on my Mac or copy directly to Mac and play it works just fine.
Since downloading these updates cannot download anything anymore without errors when playing them.
If I downloaded same files earlier though they would have worked.
Only as a last resort would I do a clean reinstall of OS X -- thing is it would take a lot of work just to reinstall OS X, copy all my files I have backed up back to my hard drive, re-importing my music and artwork, re-installing Microsoft Office X and its updates, reinstalling some (but not all the latest ones if neccessary) of Apple's Security Updates, reupdating to Mac OS 10.3.9 to reinstall QuickTime 7.
I had like 283 files in my iTunes Library, including all my music, videos, podcasts etc.
Imagine how long it would take to get them all back in there; and I re-did it last night until it got erased again. Don't want to re-do it unless next time it stays permanently.
Just a note I also have Virex 7 on my Mac -- and it used to be a startup item but somehow it got disabled from starting up.
Also, I do have VLC Media Player but even that has been having problems with playing newly downloaded media files since I updated my QuickTime.
So the problem now is with my iTunes Library erasing itself continuously and even when its working sometimes refusing to play an entire track (it starts playing a song and then skips to the next one) I've checked my preferences and cross shading or whatever its called is unselected but sound checker is on.
Also the problem involves my Safari erasing bookmarks on its own as described above. Please help anyway you can!
As a last resort will do a clean reinstall, re-copy all my files back to my hard drive, reinstall my programs, re-update my Mac carefully etc.

Thanks for the help. I will take your advice and try running Disk Utility again. I have noticed sometimes when running Safari after quitting the application my defaults get changed -- that is my preferences go away. I have popup blocking and tabbed browing normally enabled by default it used to be if I enabled them as long as I didn't manually disable them that they would stay the same even after I quit and relaunch the browser, but now they get disabled when I quit and have to manually re-enable them again.
Also as noted bookmarks get deleted. Since the time I posted this thread I had at one time done a clean reinstall of OS X -- did it about 1-2 weeks ago. Not sure if videos I download on my Mac still have same problem but noticed if I download same videos on a PC that I used to download and play directly on my Mac that I could burn them to a CD or put them on a flash drive and transfer the file to Mac without any problems but downloading directly on Mac and then playing causes difficulty.
However, the same issue with Safari and iTunes has still been lingering for a while. I already have Mac OS 10.3.9 Combined Update installed should I try re-installing again? That would require me to reinstall OS X again and then update to 10.3.9. Or simply re-download and re-install 10.3.9 if possible over existing configuration so installing 10.3.9 over 10.3.9?
3 times out of 5 iTunes Music Library becomes damaged -- a few times I have tried since then deleting files in iTunes cache -- shouldn't become too big anyways -- otherwise it could become slow or something (good reason for cleaning Safari cache sometimes also) of course I wouldn't clean out the entire cache unless I had to or I thought that would fix the problem etc -- unless maybe it would even do a lot of good for resolving the problem.
I even tried trashing the damaged iTunes Library and the iTunes Music Library.xml file when the Library wasn't working.
If the problem re-occurs should I trash the iTunes preferences file(s) like iTunes.plist etc would help?

  • Touchpad works erratically after clicking

I bought a Satellite L40-A just a few weeks ago, and I haven't encountered problems until just last week. I've noticed that my touchpad works erratically (does not move the cursor as expected when used, the synaptics icon on the system tray shows that it is sometimes detecting a touch even if I'm not touching it) after using one of the touchpad buttons. The erratic behavior goes away after I put the laptop on sleep and then wake it back up again.
I've tried updating my synaptics drivers to v17.0.8.21, which I downloaded from here. However, the problem still exists.
Is this a software or a hardware problem? Does anyone know how to solve this?
    Thanks.

That doesn't appear to be a US model, and this is the forums for Toshiba USA. You may want to contact Toshiba in your region.

  • My ipad has started jumping from app to app. Games act erratically. Not all the time. Any ideas?

My ipad has started jumping from App to App.  Games acting erratically.  Doesn't happen ALL the time. ANY ideas?

Close all apps in the recents tray completely and reboot iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close ..close them all! Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • What should I do if my trackpad is acting up?

Recently, my trackpad has been acting up-- it acts as if i have two fingers on it even though i only have one, it doesn't recognize my fourth finger, and sometimes the cursor just doesn't move or it just shakes even when im not touching the trackpad.
This problem just started today and goes in and out.
*But Now, after i just turned off my mac, the track pad seems to be all right, but there are a few, very slight signs of the trackpad still acting up.
Should I go ahead to my apple dealer to ask about this issue or is there something I can do on my own to resolve this problem?

    Marphie
Try a PRAM reset. To do this shutdown the computer. With your left hand hold down the option+command keys. Power the computer on and immediately with your right hand little finger hold down the P key, with your index finger hold down the R key. Wait until you hear the Apple chime twice and release all keys. Let the computer boot up normally. Try that and see if it helps. Follow up here and let us know if that worked for you.

  • My crazy keyboard is acting erratically.

The keyboard, which comes with my new Mac Pro only two months ego, is acting erratically. When I pressing (Left Command + Z) for undo or (Shift + Q) it is not working. If press (Left Command + q) for quit from any applications, it mirrored two monitor (I’m using two display). Interesting thing is “left command” key is working with another combination like (Command + V), (Command + C) etc. I’m sure the problem is in keyboard, because I’ve tried by another keyboard and everything is working fine. Now my question is, how can I fix this keyboard? In Bangladesh there is no warranty for keyboard and mouse (My supplier said).

Reset the SMC and PRAM at least 3x each. For instructions please navigate to:

  • Cursor and the track pad are acting erratically.

I have a 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2012).  Currently have Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) install. My cursor and the track pad are acting erratically.  Any suggestions.  Google wasn't a great help.

    Replace your MacBook's battery ASAP.

  • Palm Pre acting erratically after 1.4.5 Update

After I updated to 1.4.5 a few weeks ago, I lost my bookmarks first. Resetting the phone solved the problem however a few days later all of a sudden it started acting erratically as if someone else was using my phone remotely. (there would be signs on the screens as if someone was tapping on the screen and the browser would open along with other apps or e-mail and when I tried to throw the open screens throw away, they would hesitate and get stuck in the middle of the screen) Another reset seemed to have resolved the problem but yesterday the same problem came back while I was driving and when the navigation was on. The navigation froze and started pointing the sky!
Any suggestions how to fix this problem?
    Thanks,
    Burak
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

When you say "reset", do you mean you rebooted the phone? or did you use WebOS Doctor to reload the OS entirely?
If you haven't already done so, try shutting the phone down entirely and removing the battery. If that doesn't work for you, then try running WebOS Doctor. It's going to wipe everything. You should be able to get all your apps and contacts back when the phone asks you to log into your Palm Profile. I'm not 100% about whether you'll get your data back or not (pics, music, docs, ect.) so be sure to get your important files off the phone first.
Make sure that you have your Pre's backup feature enabled (it should be by default, but check anyway), otherwise your Palm profile will have nothing to restore.

  • My Trackpad Is Acting As If I'm Holding It Down

Help!!!  My inbuilt trackpad is acting as if im always holding it down. Please help!

If you have a MacBook with an easily removeable battery, try the following -
    Shut down the MacBook.
Remove the battery. Examine it for signs of swelling. If any are found, replace the battery.
Connect the MacBook to its AC power adapter.
    Start up the MacBook again.
Test for issues with the trackpad.
If the issue with the trackpad goes away, again replace the battery
A number of older portable batteries have had problems with expansion which often causes them to interfere with the keyboard or trackpad.
    Best of luck.

  • Mouse & keyboard acting erratic

My new G5 2.5GHz's mouse and keyboard are acting up (running 10.4.11.) The mouse is slow and erratic and the keyboard misses some strokes as you type along. I tried changing mouse and keyboard, USB ports, zapping PRAM, trashing universalaccess preference and still this keeps on happening. It stops for about a minute after I zap the PRAM and then starts again. Any idea?
