Trackpad & USB port
My trackpad on my macbook pro is highly unresponsive. To circumvent this problem, I tried using a USB wired mouse but it wasn't long until my cursor (while using the mouse) started moving uncontrollably. Anyone have any idea what the problem may be?
Did you go through each item, step-by-step? If you got to a part where a reinstallation of the OS is required, then that's what you may have to do.
Since you say that the trouble seems to begin when using your WD drive, I would suspect it as well. I just haven't had good luck with WD drives over the decades and much prefer Seagate, Hitachi & Toshiba drives.

Keyboard, Trackpad, Mouse and USB ports - Not Responding

Here is my problem. Today when I started my MBP, there was no keyboard, no mouse(USB), no trackpad, no USB ports. I restarted it several times, but nothing changes. If not everything looks fine My desktop is availble, also the backlight on the keyboard works fine, but I can do nothing, my MBP is unusable. Only the power button works fine. I tried to connect an external USB keybord without success, the same with usb drives. I'm running 10.5.6 on MBP, Core Duo 1.83 GHz, 2 GB RAM.
I found many discussions here about the same problem( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1568210&tstart=0 ), I tried a restart without battery etc.... Nothing helps.

Message was edited by: gvassilevAs this is literally a brand new imac, I would hope that the ports aren't giving up as I am sure they are very expensive to replace.
If it is that new you should be under applecare so you could take it your nearest apple store and let them deal with it (or call apple first if you want).
Besides the keyboard do you have anything else connected to the usb ports that may be drawing off too much usb power? In which case you may need a powered usb hub. -
I have a Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Upgraded to Yosemite last week.
Three days ago I was using my Macbook Air for the first time since upgrading to Yosemite. I had been using my Macbook Air for approximately 30 minutes, I was using safari and the keyboard and trackpad stopped working (would not respond). The only button that worked was the power button.
I rebooted and they were still not working. I plugged in a USB mouse and external USB keyboard, only one USB port would work (the Left USB port if looking at the screen) so I had to swap between keyboard and mouse.
After logging in there is a bluetooth icon at the top of the screen with a sawtooth line through it. Bluetooth is unavailable and the bluetooth icon is missing from the system preferences menu.
If I run a hardware test by holding D (on USB keyboard) at startup it says that no problems are found and at the conclusion of the test the keyboard and trackpad start working again. When I log on the bluetooth is working again.
I shut down the Macbook Air and when I started it again the keyboard and trackpad and right side USB ports were all not working again. I logged in using the USB keyboard and mouse and the bluetooth not available sawtooth icon had returned.
I ran the hardware test again and at the conclusion of the test the trackpad and keyboard started working again.
I have tried deleting com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and com.apple.Bluetooth.plist.lockfile from /Library/Preferences/ and tried resetting SMC and Power Functions but this did not fix the issue. The only thing that seems to work is running a hardware test - obviously I don't want to do this every time I use the computer.
I do not believe any hardware is faulty/damaged - I think it has something to do with bluetooth/Yosemite.
I do not have the Macbook with me at the moment, if you have suggestions that I can try or additional checks/info you require please let me know and I can get back to you.

I have exactly the same problem, and I can't find any solution.
I can't even track down the root of the problem: the Bluetooth/Wifi module? The trackpad? The keyboard/top case? The logicboard?
I've tried all the usual: SMC/PRAM reset, clean install, kext cache clearing.

My USB port (closest to the screen) is not working? And what is an IR Receiver in my USB port?
Hi everyone,
I recently found out that my USB port, closest to my screen, is not working. Before I called Apple Care for help, I performed a PRAM and a SMC RESET, which unfortunately did not work. I called Apple Care and they help me troubleshoot simple resets such as, shutdowns and restarts. The representative I spoke with conluded that the physical hardware has an issue and must be brought to the Apple Store for a diagnosis. I called the Apple Store to at least budget the fee for getting a USB port fixed and it's about $300.00. I never dropped my macbook or had any sort tactile encounterment with hard surfaces by dropping or hitting. I don't understand how my macbook pro would be physically damaged. I then thought maybe my software was out of date (right now I am running 10.9 Mavericks) or I forgot to do the minor software updates, but I was at a lost again because my macbook is up-to-date. I searched for further help and found a way to monitor what's plugged into my usb ports. (I read in the apple forums that a girl had nothing in her usb ports, but upon looking at the System Information> Hardware> USB, that the macbook recognizes that there are drives in the ports) I looked at my ports; one is being used by wirless mouse (the port that works) and the other (the port that doesnt work) is being used by an "IR RECEIVER". Now, is the IR Receiver actually using that port and that's why my macbook cannot recognize other devices inserted into that port? Or is the IR RECEIVER suppose to be in that port and that the hardware for that port is simply damaged (which would mean I need $300.00 to get that fixed)? I know this is a lot, but someone help me?

Current Required (mA): 100I can help with the "IR Receiver" part of your question. That's the piece of hardware inside older MacBook Pros (MBPs) that lets them work with the Apple Remote. "IR" is the standard abbreviation for "infrared," the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum used by remotes for many common devices (stereos, cable boxes, Apple TVs, etc.). The remote sends a coded stream of IR pulses; a corresponding receiver in the target device "sees" the infrared light and decodes it. The MBP's internal IR Receiver sends the received signals to the processor via USB through an internal hub.
The most recent MacBook Pros have dropped the IR receiver and no longer work with the Apple Remote. -
USB ports not working in Windows-7 on MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 after Bootcamp installation
1) INSTALLATION
Using Bootcamp (v. 5.1.1, OS X Mavericks) in combination with an original Microsoft installation DVD disc using an external optical CD/DVD drive. Note, the installation is NOT from an ISO image. In the Bootcamp setup window only the lower two of the three setup options are clicked, namely a) to download Windows-7 drivers to a USB stick, and b) to partition the harddrive and then to install Windows.
2) PROBLEM
After the initial Windows-7 installation no devices attached to the USB ports can be found under Windows-7. The ports are dead. Also the WLAN did not work, so no internet connection was possible.
3) CAUSE
The problem is caused when you use a USB 3.0 stick as destination for the Bootcamp driver downloads. It seems that Windows-7 cannot recognize the USB 3.0 stick properly during the Bootcamp/Windows installation process, thus failing to do perform a proper installation of the Windows-7 drivers.
4) SOLUTION
Use a USB 2.0 stick and everything will work perfectly.
Follow these steps in order:
1) Connect your external DVD drive to a USB port and insert the Windows installation disc
2) Start the Bootcamp utility
3) In Bootcamp, remove the failed Windows-7 installation and partition
4) In Bootcamp, redo the entire Bootcamp process, but this time using a USB 2.0 stick
5) Follow all further steps in Bootcamp and later in the Windows-7 installation process
6) At the end of the installation procedures you will be asked to confirm the installation of all Bootcamp/Windows drivers.
7) Bootcamp installs all the drivers and your Windows-7 installation will work perfectly.Ok, where is this Intel driver? There is no such thing "program manager" so I am guessing you mean the Programs and features control panel, but on my machine that whole window is blank after a clean install. I still cannot get the USB ports to activate. Two fresh installs and several different USB sticks later and no luck. Should I just give up and go to Windows 8.1? I really need Windows 7 to work if at all possible. Other devices shows one USB controller without driver software so I suppose that's the culprit. There are other USB devices installed under the USB section of Device Manager, but they apparently have nothing to do with the USB ports themselves, just devices like the trackpad etc. I've spent two hours on this so far and it's getting out of control. Why doesn't this work with generic USB drivers?

USB Ports on Macbook Pro (Late 2011) no longer working...
Hey all,
I know there are numurous posts on this but none have seemed to help me.
Today both of my USB ports have stopped working. Two months ago the one next to the thunderbolt port would go in and out and today both of them just don't work at all except to supply power. I can still charge my phone with them but thats it, nothing is recognized when I plug it in.
I've tried the PRAM reset, the SMC reset, manual reset, regular reset, updating the OSX to the latest and nothing has helped. I've read I might have to replace the logic board but I really hope I don't have to resort to that.
I've posted the reports from the System Information and an app called Etrecheck. Hopefully someone will be able to pinpoint the issue.

1. I live in Atlanta, close enough to an Apple store. But I just know that going there will probably mean I'll have to get the logic board replaced.
2. The only thing I noticed before the first USB port started acting funny was that my battery status changed to "Service Battery". I plan on replacing it this week too.
3. Nope only difference is that my battery drains kind of fast. After about 3-4 hours of my normal usuage with it (Internet, music, videos, and sometimes using Logic) it will be time to hook up the charger.
Would replacing the battery do anything? I'm not thinking it would but figure it'd be worth a shot since I've got to replace it anyway.

GS70 2QE - Help needed.... non of my USB ports work :(
Hi guys and gyals...
First time posting here and I wish it was in a positive light but unfortunatley I have an error on my laptop thats preventing me from using it.
So I purchased a GS70 2QE with 970m and 4720 processor. I was very happy for the first two days with its performance until the time I had to use the USB ports. I realise that non of them work at all. Im normally quite good at solving tech issues but this one is going beyond me. Ive done updates on all intel/windows/nvidia drivers as far as I can tell, plus Ive checked the BIOS for usb settings and they are all enabled. Ive switched off the power saving for usb function as well as doing TWO complete reinstalls of windows and still I have no usb.
On the device manager all usb devices seem errorless except one... 'unknown USB device (link in compliance mode)', might I add that nothing is plugged in at this time. Clicking on this brings up the following:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
The SuperSpeed link to the USB device keeps going to an error state Compliance. If the device is removable, remove the device and then disable/enable from device manager to recover."
Ive attempted to uninstall all usb devices and reboot yet windows just reinstalls the same things and I get the same issue.
Now unfortunatley MSI arent so great. Ive called their UK support number 4 times and its just rang through after 30 mins each time. I have also sent an email to support.... no response.... What the hell is this all about... when I purchase a machine thats this expensive I kinda expect some support value.
Anyway Im in limbo now, cant work, cant game, cant do anything but browse the net with my trackpad. Other than this issue Im happy with the laptop.Im on win 8.1 out of the box. On 8.1 page theres no drivers for usb 3.0. Now I know there is a problem whereby intel havent released drivers for usb 3.0, all drivers are being given by microsoft as I understand, and the only work around is to use win 7 drivers that are edited. Now I have tried this and while the extensibile host controller accepts the new driver it still doesnt make the ports work. Im hoping that this issue with intel and usb 3.0 is the problem as I would like to solve this out as a software problem as opposed to sending it off for a hardware fix.
After your post I downloaded the win7 usb 3.0 drivers and eventually edited them as per this page:

Usb port not working after yosemite update please help
ive got an early 2011 macbook pro i5. and one of my usb stopped working. if i reset my computer it works for a while and then stops again. all these after yosemite update please i really need help on this.. and also when ever im in the middle of something it keeps crashing and saying these things below after i booting back up. ive tried several things, didnt work, tried repairing disk permissions. please anybody with any idea help me!

Thunderbolt Bus: MacBook Pro, 20080d.0I have the same problem when I updated to OS X 10.10 I lost both my USB ports as far as they will not recognize anything that I plug into them. The power part of the USB seams to work since it will recharge my Striiv Touch but nothing shows up when you connect anything to the ports.
I have tried a number of things from rebooting, trying other usb devices that work on other systems with no problems but will not work on my Macbook Pro.
Any Help out there?

Hi!
I have just tried to install Windows 7 x86 version on my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion and a couple of strange things start appearing:
1. On the Boot Camp Assistant first screen, I tried to download the drivers and after about 15min the system responding that the server did not responded.
2. I went further and installed the Win7 without making the ISO as requested by the assistant and with no driver burned on a CD
3. After installed the Win7 I noticed that it did not recognise the WIFI in my home nor any other in the area;
4. There is a freaking RED LIGHT coming from my Audio jack output that I have never seen in my life... and that scares me!
5. The USB ports does not works on Win7 side !
6. The ethernet does not work, Win7 just don´t recognise it...
7. There is no Boot Camp on Win7 side to be deployed...
Basically I will use Windows to run Quicken for Windows, but I can´t acces my backups on Dropbox because I do not have intercet access, and obviously I am not going to be able to back up new files.
Is there someone able to help me?

I appreciate all help!Did you make sure to install the Bootcamp utilities after installing Windows? They can be found in the boot disk/usb flash that Bootcamp creates (check for a folder called "Windows Support").These should enable sound/video/trackpad/etc.to work with full functionaliity under Windows (you may need to reboot after doing so). After installing them, you may also want to run Windows Update to make sure you get the latest drivers.
As far as the red light, many models of Macbook Pros are equipped with a digital Audio out. You can either use the standard analog 3.5mm Stereo jack (standard headphone connector), a 3.5mm miniSPDIF digital coax or miniTOSLINK digital optical cable (hence the red light). Windows may not know how to handle to audio out port until the proper drivers are installed and it may be enabling the digital signal by default. Installing the drivers mentioned above should set this back to normal operation.

USB ports not working in safe mode
I am trying to back up my computer before i take it to the apple store and i cant back up in safe mode using time machine, becuase im guess the USB ports arent working. Are there any solutions to this problem?
Ok, where is this Intel driver? There is no such thing "program manager" so I am guessing you mean the Programs and features control panel, but on my machine that whole window is blank after a clean install. I still cannot get the USB ports to activate. Two fresh installs and several different USB sticks later and no luck. Should I just give up and go to Windows 8.1? I really need Windows 7 to work if at all possible. Other devices shows one USB controller without driver software so I suppose that's the culprit. There are other USB devices installed under the USB section of Device Manager, but they apparently have nothing to do with the USB ports themselves, just devices like the trackpad etc. I've spent two hours on this so far and it's getting out of control. Why doesn't this work with generic USB drivers?

I have a mid-2010 white unibody MacBook. It's been running fine, with the exception of a problem with the dashboard after the most recent firmware upgrade about a year ago. I just learned to work around it. But then Friday I got an error saying the the USB port was drawing too much power and was shut down. Sudden and random, as it had never happened before and showed up as I woke it up from screensaver mode. Nothing was plugged in. I have a Magic Trackpad and a Logitech keyboard connected via Bluetooth. Disconnecting them doesn't affect the error. I've tried rebooting and resetting PRAM & SMC. I'm trying to reinstall Lion, but I don't think it's a clean or fresh install. Has anyone encountered a USB port that dies but runs hot? The CPU seems to run a lot warmer than usual, buy about 20° F.

I'm a user of Macbook Pro 13'' Early 2011, OS X Lion pre-installed. I'm having a tiny problem with my USB port located the nearest from the front. Everytime I freshly boot-up to either Mac OS X or Window with a pre-plugged optical mouse I cannot move the cursor with my USB Mouse light show there is power on under the mouse. However, after I restart the computer again it able to moves with the mouse still plugged in.
And this USB port seem to confuse keyboard driver with USB flash under my Window 7. Thus I cannot properly eject my flash when I plug everything to this port or I lose the built-in keyboard.
P.S: I already try resetting every RAM configuration and do a clean install of Mac OS X. But still not working.

That said, I am investigating this topic on behalf of two clients whose MacBooks appear to have intermittent USB connectivity. -
I am getting an error message every 15 seconds that tells me: A USB device is currently drawing too much power. The hub to which it is attached will be deactivated.
It gives me the option to say OK, and I say OK, but the message keeps popping up. If I don't have the power cord connected it drains my battery pretty quickly.
The USB port next to the power plug quit working and then I started getting the message.If this message is occurring without anything connected to the external USB ports it suggests a hardware problem, 1BGC.
It may be an issue with the circuitry itself, or with one of the devices that actually attach internally to the USB busses (such as bluetooth module, IR receiver, keyboard and trackpad, iSight, and card reader if present on your computer).
You could try PRAM and SMC resets, and turning off bluetooth, but I suspect this is a hardware issue.
One final thing worth checking may be that there is nothing metallic "stuck" in the USB port that isn't working. The Magsafe magnet could possibly attract a staple or some such into that area, I guess.

Usb port has power but wont read macbook pro
I have a macbook pro with 2.4ghz intel core i7 mac os x version 10.7.3 and my USB ports recently stopped working. They still power drives, but are not reading any information. It's as if the devices do not communicate, though the powering function of the ports still works. Any body know what I should do about this?

I have replaced the original SSD with a Mushkin 120GB SSD (MKNSSDCR120GB-7)
I've used John Lewis' script at https://johnlewis.ie to flash the firmware. It works great. It loads 64 bit dual arch iso (2014.10.01) written to a USB flashdrive (Well, I'm actually using SD card in a USB reader. Not sure if that makes a difference) without having to utilize the workaround listed on the Chromebook wiki page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … stallation). I just create a regular arch bootable usb and it seems to work fine. I can use the bootable USB tools. I can install arch to the hard disk fine. (I did this a couple of times on the original SSD that came with the chromebook before I replaced it, so I know it works without having to change the SSD).
The problem I'm having occurs after I install the patched kernel (linux-chromebook-3.16.4-1-x86_64 or linux-mainline-chromebook-3.17-1-x86_64 I've tried them both. Both times I wiped the hard drive and went through the entire install process from scratch). After booting, everything loads up fine except that I lose functionality of my USB ports. The custom BIOS still reads the arch bootable USB if I choose to boot into it. If I boot from the hard drive though, as soon as the patched kernel loads, the USB ports are not working.
The output of

I can't charge my ipod without having to bend the chord what should I do
I have tried 2 chords already and I just got a new one thinking that the problem was the chord, I'm not really sure how this happened, but it did and now I can't charge my iPod.
