Trad. Chinese in mail

This is kind of a question with a small audience (on this forum at least), so I'm not too optimistic about the results, but here goes:
I've discovered that when I use the Mail app to write traditional Chinese emails, all traditional Chinese characters (e.g., the ones that have a different simplified version, so 國 vs. 国 or 萬 vs. 万, but not say 中 which is the same in both) show up as boxes or question marks when I read the emails. If I type completely in simplified Chinese there's no problem, everything shows up correctly.
In other words, if I try to type this email:
我現在在美國
this will turn out as
我?在在美?
Anyone else experienced this problem? (For what it's worth, if I type using say Gmail in Safari, there's no problem. It's only the Mail problem)

all traditional Chinese characters (e.g., the ones that have a different simplified version, so 國 vs. 国 or 萬 vs. 万, but not say 中 which is the same in both) show up as boxes or question marks when I read the emails.
What to you mean exactly by "read the emails"? On your Touch? Another machine somewhere using Mail?
Does it happen whether or not your User Interface is set to English or to TC?
Could you send me a test email like that (tom at bluesky dot org)? It sounds like it might be an encoding glitch. Have a look at the content-type header on a receiving machine (Mail > View > Message > Raw Source or Long Headers and see what the encoding is.

  • ZF (trad. chinese) language Issue

    Hi
After Installation Traditional Chinese(ZF) language, and when I login to SAPGUI with ZF option, I notice that the SAP menu language with inappropriate characters like square box, ?, etc..
Is there any step which I need to execute as post language import steps?
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi Madhu,
language import in NW 7.0 systems (including post processing) is described here:
    https://service.sap.com/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=01100035870000659947&_OBJECT=011000358700001183852006E
However I doubt that your problem is caused by missing language import tasks.
Are you using the latest SAPGUI patch ?
Can you please check SAP note 508854 (I assume you have a Unicode system ...) ?
Also a more detailed description according to SAP note 764480 could help to identify the issue (also in case you want to open a customer message).

  • How to get Chinese and Japanese input in X11?

I have tried a few things like building UIM, Canna, and Anthy, but nothing seems to work. For one thing, I seem able to compile and install the Canna library, but when I run ./configure for UIM, it can't find Canna.
Can somebody walk me through getting Chinese and Japanese input in X11?

  • Imap - Save a copy in a Folder with Chinese character

I want to use my Chinese QQ mail account with thunderbird. All directories are named in Chinese. Meaning, that when I use IMAP, Thunderbird can't save a copy in there. Within the settings it won't display the directories I'd see in the webmail version. ie in Thunderbrird it'd say, I have a Junk, Sent, Inbox Folder. But in real, those folders are called 垃圾箱,已发送,收件箱.
    Anybody an idea?

Tools menu > Account settings > copies and folders and check that the folders pointed to are the correct ones.
Note as it is an IMAP account you may also have to right click the account name in the mail folder display and select subscribe and set the folders to display.

The original SMTP protocol requires that the email to be in pure ASCII. To send email in Chinese, you may either use 8bit-MIME extension (if your SMTP server supports it, which is supported quite commonly these days) and send the email as-is, or encode your email that contain non-ASCII in one of the few MIME encoding scheme (e.g. Base-64, Quote-Printable) so that the encoded form is in pure ASCII.
The following is an example that send email using 8bit-MIME extenstion:

Rem mb_smtp.sql - Demo program to show how to send non-ASCII (including
Rem multi-byte) e-mails over the SMTP protocol using the UTL_SMTP package.

Is there any way to change the default coding in Mac? I have difficulty to open the MS Word doc. which is coded by Big5 instead of Unicode.

You can't change the encoding of the OS, but various apps let you decide what encoding to open a document, like TextEdit. For Chinese Windows to Mac issues, see this page and try the Chinese-mac mailing list as well:

  • Printing Chinese using XMLP Templates

    Hi,

But, when the report is launched from SRS, I see only "???" instead of Chinese characters... is there is a setup involved to acheive this. Thanks.

XMLP ships a bunch of unicode fonts including Trad Chinese and Madarin. You need to have these in the correct directory under EBS.Check the About Doc for your release of XMLP on metalink for instructions

  • Default Encoding for Mail

Mail on ipod touch seems to show all mails in ISO8859 or so.
The problem is I sometimes have to read mails in Chinese/Japanese encoded in EUC-CN/EUC-JP etc.
Is it possible to change the default encoding for Mail?

same problem with me. Sometime I can read Chinese/Japanese mails. Sometime the mails are unreadable. Why is Mail on mac be able to read all mails but mail on iTouch have encoding problems? I thought iTouch could be a better protable device system than windows CE in terms of international.

  • Dvorak and Chinese

I wonder if anyone can help. I only have the use of one hand when typing. Because of this I learned to touch type with the Dvorak layout for the right hand, which I do very effectively in English.
However now that I have to use Chinese on my mac I have found that when I switch to Chinese I am only able to use the Qwerty layout while using the Chinese input method.
I get round this problem on my PC with XP by using a third party software that allows CJK input with whatever keyboard layout you have selected on the system.
Would anyone know of any system tweak or third party software that would allow me to type in Chinese on a Mac with the Dvorak layout for the right hand.
    Cheers
    Colin
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thank you for the suggestion, however installing QIM
simply gives me a new way to input chinese with the
    qwerty layout.
According to the link I gave you, QIM allows you to select different layouts, which I thought should include the one you want to use. To quote:
"Supports all Roman keyboard layouts, like French, German, etc."
Did you not find this option, or is the statement wrong with regard to Dvorak?
Either way, you might want to ask on the Chinese-Mac mailing list.

  • Appleworks MS Office Convertor and Chinese files

I have many AW6 word processor files written in Chinese(Simplified). When I save one as Microsoft Word file, all Chinese characters become "?" when opened in either Mac or Windows version of Microsoft Word (Version 11). And AW6's MS Word convertor also couldn't import Chinese characters in Word files correctly into Appleworks WP.
Appleworks for Mac (non-Asian version) has supported Worldscript since Clarisworks 4, but it's sure some of its import convertors do not. and all non-Asian Clarisworks/Appleworks for Windows don't support Chinese at all.

Appleworks is pre-Unicode, so all the Chinese is probably in an encoding which today's apps don't read correctly without special measures.
You might be able to open the AW with TextEdit if you set the encoding first to Chinese (Mac OS). Or with Word if you still have the Chinese fonts used by AW (Beijing and Taipei I think) and can make Word use them.
For best advice on how to convert your stuff, I suggest you ask on the Chinese-Mac mailing list:

  • Use JSP update MSSQL server with Chinese content

    Hi,
I am using weblogic 7.0 server

I can also use JSP's getParameter() to get Chinese characters from form

    Now the problem is,
when I use JSP to execute a UPDATE or INSERT statement to the database, and
if the SQL statement contains chinese characters as content
(like INSERT into table1 (field1) values ('some chinese characters'))
the statement is executed without error,
