Trade iMac G5 for Dual 1.25 MDD PowerMac for FCP??

Hey guys, I've gotten an offer to trade my iMac G5 for a MDD PowerMac G4. I'll show you the specs comparing the 2.
iMac G5
1.8 ghz
17'' Screen
1 gig of ram
Tiger
SuperDrive
80 Gig Drive
for
PowerMac G4 (MDD) (WIND TUNNEL)
Dual 1.25
1 gig of ram
Panther (I think)
SuperDrive
100 gig drive
Geforce4 Graphics Card
Not sure if he will include a display..
Is this a downgrade? I have a problem with the expandability of the iMac, I've grown weary of it. I like the all-in-one design, room for it, but no room to put stuff in it. For FCP, the iMac's been doing a pretty good job, but I want to be able to put extra internal drives in, etc. Either direction I go, I'll end up replacing the computer in a year or 2.

iMac:
Bigger screen
Fast processor
Newer machine
Newer, faster SuperDrive
Self contained
Better video card
Cons: no way to add a second internal hard drive or second firewire bus
G4:
Internal expansion for hard drives
Can upgrade the video card
Can add a second firewire bus
Large hard drive
Can add more RAM
Cons: older, slower, getting older.
It's your call. It depends on what you intend to do with the iMac or the G4.
Unlike everybody else, for video editing, I prefer an expandable cpu

  • Replacing ata in dual 1.25 mdd powermac

hello everyone. i usually don't post qustions on the board because i normally find whatever it is i'm looking for, but this time i'm out of options. i'm currently trying to swap out the factory installed ATA in a powermac G4 MDD dual 1.25 and i cannot get the drive carrier out. I cannot find any help online. All the support apple gives is how to install additional drives, not replace the one they put in.
This hdd is failing and it needs to go. However, pulling back on the tab on the left side of the carrier does nothing. Supposedly you can just pull back (towards yourself) on the tab and slide the hdd/carrier up slightly to take out the ide and power cables. This does not work. The tab can be pulled, but nothing happens. I took out the screw at the top of the carrier only to have it fall in between the hdd and side panel. Removing the screw also did nothing. It seems as if there are multiple screws holding the carrier into place and how the carrier is in the case makes it nearly impossible to get to any other screws.
    Any help?

Hello! have you watched the video for removing the carrier from OWC? Tom

  • Linking iMac with iBook for dual display???? Possible?

If anyone could help it would be extremely appreciated.
Can i link my iBook with my new iMac to have dual screens?
There is a mini DVI on the iMac and the iBook so am i right to presume that i could link the two together and have dual screen support? I have been trying to find a mini DVI - mini DVI cable online but to no avail so im not sure what to do...

How disappointing, it would likely be so easy for the apple people to put an input in.
Once I get my new computer my old laptop's fairly nice screen will never be used again...

  • Is the 2.9 GHz i5 iMac sufficient for dual monitors?

I am in the market for a new iMac. I will be doing photo editing for the most part with iPhoto, some video editing with iMovie, and would like to have a dual monitor setup so I can multitask or watch movies while I work. Will the 2.9 GHz i5 suffice, with 8 gigs of RAM, or do I really need to go all out for that kind of use?
I may get into Aperture, Lightroom or Elements in the future, but photo and video editing will not be a common task.
    Thanks for the help

  • Powermac 1.25 MDD one or two graphics cards for dual display?

I currently have two displays running off of one ATI card. Would I be better off putting a second card in a free PCI slot to run display number two. I've noticed that the ATI card divides the 128 MB memory between the two displays. With a second card there would be more memory dedicated to each individual display.
Is this worth it or not? I have the extra card which i believe is an ATA 9200 PCI card.

    on my mac I have a nVidia Geforce4 Ti 4600 128MB DDR 4x AGP.
it has a dvi port and adc port.
I have a 19" Samsung 900DF CRT connected to a DVI to VGA adpater that came with my G4 MDD.
I also have a 17" Philips 107S CRT connected to an ADC to VGA adapter, that I bought for $28 from OWC.
works great for me. extended desktop. I have photoshop menus and palettes on the smaller monitor and the main work screen on the larger.
when i watch movies and stuff watch the movies on the larger monitor.
when I use iMovie and After Effects, I do same as I do with Photoshop.
If I wanted to, I could put a PCI graphics card in the next slot over from the AGP and run another monitor.
that ATI Radeon 9200 PCI looks good... about $130 from OWC.
but what I got works fine...

  • New IMac 27"with dual internal hard drives

How do I manage Data on my new IMac 27"with dual internal hard drives?  I have just migrated my data to my new computer.  Since I've done it from a TM backup, it all went to the Analog HD. Ressearching online I've figured I could re-run Migrating assistant and replace different data between the SSD and the Analog.  My problem now is: I want to keep my Music Library (iTunes), my Aperture Library and my documents on the analog, and use the SSD for System, Users and Apps.  Aperture, is easy, because both Aperture and iPhoto can find their way, bt iTunes and My documents are a issue.  Can Anyone help me?

Install OS X on the SSD:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your SSD volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to change the target disk to your SSD.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
After you boot from the SSD open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the user account and select Advanced Options. You will see a Home Dir: field with a Browse button on the right. Click on the button. Navigate to the HDD's Users folder. Select your account folder then click on the Open/Choose button. You must restart immediately.
Upon the restart your SSD system will now be using your actual Home folder located on the HDD. You can then go about installing your applications or copying them from the HDD to the Applications folder on the SSD (and also from the Utilities folder on the HDD to the one on the SSD.) You will likely need to do some transfers of the Applications Support and Preferences folders found in the main Library folder.

  • Big jump from G3 iMac to G5 Dual!

I'm buying a secondhand (fairly new) G5 Dual to replace my old iMac 400DV (OS 9.2.2).
    I have questions:
What should I look for in the way of problems, apart from pixel deaths?
Will I be able to install my 9.2.2 applications?
Will the G5 be able to read my CD reference originated on the G3?
Anything I particularly need to know?
The most pressing question is - how I pay for it?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
If you would kindly reply in a way which is understandable by a technophobe, I would be most grateful!

I'm buying a secondhand (fairly new) G5 Dual to replace my old iMac 400DV (OS 9.2.2).
What sort of G5? What's the price? What's the specs of the machine and video card? What are you going to use it for? Want to 3D game or not?
Some are better than others and the Dual series are about to be obsolete, they are over 3 years old already and most of the rest of the new Mac consumer line are already Intel based Dual core processors.
What should I look for in the way of problems, apart from pixel deaths?
Pixel deaths only apply to monitors. But the Dual PowerMac G5 series (not the Quad) suffer from a beeping power supply. Sometimes it can be remedied with installing Tigers' developers tools and Processor Preference pane (turn off Nap Mode)
Depending upon which PowerMac your getting, depends upon what sort of PCI cards, video cards you can upgrade to.
Will I be able to install my 9.2.2 applications?
I still think Tiger will allow the installation of Classic environment which is needed to run Classic applications. The problem of course is the apps OS 9 based installer disks might not run in Classic. Then there is copy protection schemes that might need installation directly from the apps disks, which might not work. Font and printing problems, trouble with connecting scanners and driver software is common with Classic. Most just switch to Mac OS X, it's easier.
Will the G5 be able to read my CD reference originated on the G3?
Yes, if you mean files and not a app installation disk of some sort.
Anything I particularly need to know?
    Yes tons.
The best way to go to Mac OS X is directly, with all new apps, etc. Bouncing back and forth in Classic while your trying to learn Mac OS X on the same machine is not going to be fun, you won't know what's right or wrong. Use your older Mac for OS 9 until your completely up on the new machine. Use the older Mac for connections to old scanners and whatnot. Is my recommendation.
Also since your making such a great leap, perhaps you should wait until the Intel processor PowerMacs (Mac Pro's we think it will be called) and Mac OS 10.5 arrives (aka: "leopard") sometime this year.
This way you jump from a old OS and old processor type to a new OS and a new processor type in one stop. Without wasting money on software or software upgrades.

Well if you don't have money or credit...
Your really behind in the times, may I suggest you do some online reading at various Mac websites so you can get up to date with the latest information to make better decisions.

  • Copper heatsinks for dual 1.25

I have three dual 1.25 MDD's I am going to upclock to 1.5. This speed seems pretty stable by most reports though more cooling will be needed particularly after the vid card is also upgraded. Some think the level three cache is really the catch for higher speeds but I will have to increase cooling anyway if I pop some 7800/s in them. Problem is that the dual 1.4 coper heatsink is commanding anywhere from
80 to 100 + bucks. Does anyone know a cheaper source for a couple of these puppies then what ebay has available? I had found one link where a guy had used a nice pc copper heatsink and, while a shim had to be fabricated, still got it in with the case shutting and got nice cool temps out of his overclock. I can't find that stupid link now though. Does anyone remember where it is?

It's the thick finned Al heatsink that is the bummer.

Many third party Apple resellers have the ability to add a drive and maintain your warranty if you have one.

  • Possible to swap MDD FW400 for FW800 logic board?

    Hello all,
I'd thought I would ask this question because I have been thinking about this. Currently, have a dual 1.25 2003 model(not earlier MDD!) MDD G4 with the 2MB L3 per processor.
I just received today my airport extreme USB netgear device and I must say plugged into the USB 2.0 5-port card I have it is even faster than the Belkin PCI F5D7000 card! But, my question is concerning something else.
FW800 logic board - is it really worth it for me to swap current FW400 board with the FW800 board? 2ndly, can I use my existing MDD case or do I have to find another case? My power supply is a 360w power supply. I am not sure if it is a quieter one or not. The date on my power mac G4 2003 says: copyright June 2003(or was it July?) Apple computer. - Does this entail that the FW800 machines came out the same time as mine did? Again, I don't have the original MDD(867,1gh,1.25), I have the last dual bootable OS 9.2.2 MDD machine from 2003.
Also, is the airport extreme card going to produce faster results that the netgear WG111V2.0 USB device I currently have plugged into my USB 2.0 pci card? One thing I did notice is that I can no longer put my computer into hibernation or deep sleep, since I now have the USB 2.0 netgear wireless device attached.
Can anyone confirm if there is a way around for the sleep/hibernate function to work even with the USB 2.0 device plugged in? I also removed the Belkin wireless PCI card(FD57000). Before the USB 2.0 device, my computer would goto sleep and hibernate normally.
    Thanks!

*9.x and Internet*: shouldn't be a problem with Ethernet. Forget which control panels you'll need to play with TCP/IP, Network? So if you want faster Internet with the MDD in 9.x, go with Ethernet -- the regular Airport card will work in 9.x by the way. That's the reason why for faster wireless, I'm going to buy the new Airport Express (with wireless -n), and connect via WDS to my Airport Extreme -- the MDD will connect to the Express via Ethernet which should be fine in both 9.x and OS X.
I did this once before my the original Airport Express (wireless -g) and an old Linksys all-in-one that supported WDS. But the Linksys blew its ethernet ports, so I replaced it with a newer model that doesn't support WDS.
*Copper heatsink* should fit any MDD CPU card, I've tried mine on both a Dual 867 and 1.25GHz cards, although I'm using a Verax cooler on the 1.25GHz Dual. The copper contact plate while narrow (about 1.5 cm) is a long piece, so it would contact both single and dual CPUs. As for the 1.25GHz dual in particular, see here.
Just a tip, use some good thermal compound, like Artic Silver. You'll need to clean off the old compound on your CPUs. I used Articlean (also made by Artic silver), works great. They sell a kit with both cleaner and purifier (preparation compound for the thermal compounds).
*Dual 1.25 2003*. I think the best way may be to check the model number. According to everymac.com, it should be M9145LL/A. I'm sure the info's also on Apple's site somewhere. The last 2003 1.25Ghz have 2MB L3 cache, which is easy enough to see in say System Profiler. If you're seeing 2MB L3, then you know you've got the CPU from the last 2003 model. As for the motherboard, you'd probably have to check the assembly number under the modem to insure a 2003 motherboard, but I don't think that matters as much as the CPU.
The CPU cards from MDDs and G4 XServes are pretty much interchangable --setting aside the issue of 133MHz and 167Mhz front side buses, which could overclock or underclock depending on CPU card & motherboard combination. And reading around there's an incompatibility with certain MDD Dual 1.0GHz on certain motherboards.
You could put an early 1.25GHz dual with only 1MB L3 on a 2003 MDD motherboard; for that matter you could stick a 1.42GHz dual from a FW800 MDD on your 2003 MDD motherboard, which some people have done. I guess if you're seeing Dual 1.25GHz w/1MB L3 advertised as the last 2003 MDDs, then people might not know what they're talking about, or may have replaced the CPU. The 1MB L3 versions cost less.
FW800, indeed if you want it, you can always add a card later. Since the MDDs don't have USB2, for that you'll need a card as I think you've already done. But there's always a worry of eating the slots. While rare, there are some combo USB2/FW800 cards. Problem with a combo cards over separate cards is that there's usually a performance hit on the FW side. A friend of mine has one that suffers from this -- like 7-10MB/sec hit. I recently bought a Siig combo FW800/USB2 and there's not nearly the performance hit; FW800 is only a few ticks less in MB/sec compared to my FW800 only card. In my DA, I didn't see any deep sleep issues with the Siig card, but every Mac is different. I've haven't tested it in a MDD, yet.
I'm working on getting two MDDs working (long story), so I have my hands full. Can't say I love the MDDs yet, but I certainly been bit by the tinkering/upgrading bug. So I'm have fun getting my two MDDs together that are both very close to being ready -- I need to stress test them before moving over my HDs/data, cards, etc.

  • Possible to Swap Dual 1.25 Processors for Dual 1.42?

I have to replace my processors and perhaps the logic board of my original Dual 1.25 Ghz MDD Mac.
Does anyone know if the [FW800] 1.42 Ghz processors are compatible with the 1.25 model that preceded it by 5 or so months? Additionally, would the logic board work within the MDD mac?
    Thanks,

Dual 1.25 Ghz MDD Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Based on some net research, mostly on the xlr8yourmac site, I found that the swap has been done by several Mac users with dual 1.25 GHz MDD G4s. The mods were made over a year or more ago and there weren't any follow-up qualifiers, so they apparently were good upgrades.
So, if you have to replace the dual 1.25 MHz processors anyway, going to the dual 1.42 GHz processors is a workable swap. However, the upgraders noted that the performance gain was modest, so doing it for performance alone probably isn't cost justified.
The information I found did not include any mention of logic board swaps and did not specify whether or not the processor swap affected the ability to boot into OS 9. I don't think it is likely the boot encoding in locked into the processors based on personally upgrading several processors on old Macs over the years.
Good luck with your processor swap.

G5 dual 2ghz.  Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard.  Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue.  What's happening?

I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
    Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.
    They aren't Lithium-ion batteries
