Trade in MacBook Air?

Can I trade in my old MacBook Air for the faster model? I got mine within the last two months.

A user a support was in a similar situation, bought a MacBook Air from the online Apple Store 44 days ago. I opted to call up Apple's Customer Service phone number (by the way, hold times are crazy today) and here was the response I got:
We're able to offer a refund/return within 14-days from date of purchase assuming the machine is not damaged or broken.
There is no restocking fee.
I pressed the agent and she indicated to me that the best she could offer would be a 21-day extension with manager approval, still well short of the 44 days my user was at with her purchase.
It's still worth a call in, however, you may get a different and more favorable response.

  • Can I trade my MacBook Air for a new MacBook Air that just came out?

I was wondering that I bought the MacBook Air in November of 2010 and I would like to get the new MacBook Air can I just do a trade from Best Buy or Apply?

Well... you can return your Air as part of Apple's recycle program and get an Apple Gift Card for it's value.  Unfortunately, they (well, a company that does this sort of thing) sets the "value" which is nothing close to what you would be able to get on your own:
    http://www.apple.com/recycling/computer/
I don't think anyone intended to insult you.  You sort of implied in your original post that you should be able to exchange something that you purchased 8 months ago.  In fairness, I'm aware of very few places that offer a return policy that liberal.  When you clarified that you could pay up front to be guaranteed a certain percentage of the original value over time... that certainly made more sense (although Apple does not offer the exact thing... but only what I had posted the link to above).
Having said all that... when I purchased my Air, it was only about a month or so before the new ones came out.  I knew that the new ones were coming out.  I was actually concerned about the loss of the dedicated GPU and the fairly significant drop in GPU performance with the integrated Intel processor.  Granted, the new processors are about twice as powerful... that's significant.  But, I don't really do anything processor intensive on my machine.  So doubling the power for me was a non-issue.  I do just want the OS to run smoothly and fluidly and the nVidia GPU in the machine that you (and I) have does a great job.  So not only did I know that new Airs were coming out, I bought mine because I didn't want the newer model.  Of course the new Airs have Thunderbolt as well... but I'm not expecting that to take off for a while yet (and USB 2.0 has worked fine for me for years).  If you do processor intensive stuff, you could have good reason for wanting the newly released Air (although in getting the last model, I would expect you did't have heavy duty processing needs).  I personally am happy I have the previous model and the release of the new model does not devalue mine in the least.

  • Can I trade my old MacBook Pro to MacBook Air OR iPad?

Hello, I bought a MacBook Pro 13 inch last year around August, if I want to buy a MacBook Air 13 inch OR iPad, is there have any trade-in plan exist? Or I can sell the old one to Apple Store to trade some money? Thanks.

Apple Store > Recycle and Reuse Program > PowerOn
I have been hoodwinked.  PowerOn has gained a perfectly fine power adapter and accessories, but refuses to fairly trade with compensation.
PowerOn stated the adapter was damage/defective, but oddly wanted to keep it and not mail it back.  It sounds like they found a reason to decrease the offered price for my laptop, but keep the power adapter and accessories. Very Crooked; especially when I know I have been using those items over the past 6 years with no problems.
I understand that the reuse program is at will and subject to PowerOn's appraisal; however, I was informed that the only option I had was for PowerOn to keep a portion of my trade-in with no compensation or there would be no agreement at all.  This is a deal at gunpoint. I would NOT recommend giving  PowerOn your business. It is hard to believe Apple, who has great service, endorses a crooked company like PowerOn.
You may be better off at your local pawn shop, where I would at least expect to be hustled.

  • Can I retrieve files off my MacBook Air that has crashed (White screen flashing folder)?

Besides a few freezes here and there, my MacBook Air has worked fine. However when I opened it the other day, It wouldn't power on. I pressed the power button a few times, and it finally powered on with a completely white screen. I powered it off and on a few times but nothing changed. I figured if I let the battery die, maybe it would work when I charged it again. I left the screen open, but after 10 min, a flashing folder with a question mark popped up, And it's been flashing ever sense. I took it to apple, they said it was a software issue. They plugged it into a g-drive to reinstall, along with other cords and got their apple account up, although none of my information showed up. They said the Mac forgot its software, and nothing of mine would show. They said I have to replace the lap top and gave me prices/options. I never got my question fully answered on if I can retrieve my photos, notes, garage band, music, etc. I left apple with out any trade. Does anyone know of any way I can get my pictures, music, voice memos, and notes, back? I'm desperate and have lots of important stuff that I can't access. I'm also losing work not having access to my computer. But I'm not trading it in until I try/or know there is no way to get my stuff back. I will pay anything to get my stuff back! I honestly would rather have my stuff then the computer. And just get a new one. Any advice will help. Thanks!

a flashing folder with a question mark popped up,
Can mean that your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from.
Try restarting while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk and restart.

If you did not backup your important files, an alternative would be data recovery but it's expensive.

I want to trade in my old mid 2011 MacBook Air for a new MacBook Pro. After I have transferred my data to the new MacBook Pro, how do I reformat the hard disk to wipe all my data and return it to Factory specifications? Will the built in Lion recovery allow me to do this? I am currently running OS X Yosemite. Has the upgrade to Yosemite damaged or removed the original Lion recovery partition?

  • Where can I find an adapter that will let me use my firewire 800 devices with a thunderbolt only ported macbook air?

Been looking for a way to use my firewire 800 devices with my macbook air - which has only usb and thunderbolt ports.  I've seen internet pages for an adapter from sonnet but have not found anywhere to actually purchase such a thing.  Would love to be able to at least try to use the thunderbolt port - for something - or trade the thing in for something with present day usable firewire 800 ports.  Is this thunderbolt technology already getting shelved?  I see like 5 items on the market that actually use this port...  really?  That's it?   Thank you for any guidance!

  • Will the new MacBook Air be able to handle what I need it for?

I'm about to buy my first ever Mac, exciting right?
Anywho, I was set on getting a MacBook (or possibly pro) then the new MacBook Air came out, after looking at it and doing a bit of research it seems to be a fantastic computer but I'm not sure if it can handle what I'll be using it for.
On a general day to day basis, I use these programs:
    - a Web Browser (surfing the web and watching online video mostly)
    - iTunes
    - Scrivener (Writing Software)
    - Skype
    - AIM
    - Microsoft Office
On about a weekly+ basis, I'll be using these programs:
    - iMovie
    - Adobe Flash CS5 Professional
    - Adobe Photoshop CS5
    - Other Adobe programs?
Other little tidbits that may be helpful:
    - I'm a college student (And though I don't write a lot of essays, stupid technical classes, I will next year because...)
    - I'll most likely major in Graphic Design, English or both.
    - I spend a lot of time on the computer.
    - I'm not a gamer, outside of the occasional online game
    - I'm not planning on keeping too much on the computer. (Only programs and whatever project(s) I'm currently working on. Everything else will be kept in an external hard drive or Dropbox. Too keep away clutter and because having so many PC's crash on me has made me paranoid.)
I like the new MacBook Air because it's small and light and has the perfect amount of battery to fit my needs (I hardly ever keep my computer away from a plug for more than 7 hours) Also I really never use my CD drive on my laptop, in fact I think I only used it twice this past year. So really my only concern is that I'll buy it and end up discovering that it doesn't fit my needs, hence this post.
Beyond this I only have three questions:
1.) How much memory should I have? (I do want some wiggle room)
2.) Does a mini jack mean I have to buy special headphones or an adapter?
3.) Does the Facetime Camera = Web Cam? Can I use it for the same purposes? (ex. taking photos/videos, video chat through Skype, etc.)
And the main question: Would the New MacBook Air work for me? If not, which Mac should I get instead? (I'm getting a 13" laptop across the board)
And I probably posted way too much information about my computer life, but if there is anything I learned from taking technical classes its that the more information I can give the better suited computer you can advice me to get.
So thanks to anyone who responds!

The extra 2GB would make any computer run faster. Could you maybe explain more?
Absolutely. The 13" MBA (baseline configuration) at $1299 weighs in at $100 more than the 13" MBP, upgrade the MBA to 4GB and it's now $200 more. So you're paying more money for comparable or "slightly" better performance.
There's been a lot of performance benchmarks released over the past 4 days since I made my initial remark. Not to mention in that time I've had the opportunity to use a 13" MBA with 2GB & 4GB of RAM, although I had more time with the 2GB model. Some observations:
1.) What happens when you need to install something that's only available via CD or DVD? Part two of that question, what happens if you don't have access to a computer with an optical drive to share over to the MBA?
2.) What if you require FireWire connectivity or need to troubleshoot your computer via TDM?
3.) How do you manage 128GB?
4.) How do you run a presentation from the machine with an IR-base remote?
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of the MBA, I was one of the first in line to buy one when the first generation came out and I made the 2nd generation MBA my "go to" mobile computer for well over a year. I've been very pleased with currently MBA, but it's not a jack of all trades and while it may be faster than my 13" MBP there are still scenarios that require features the MBP has 'standard' that the MBA does not offer or requires more $$ to implement.
My initial comment about "sluggish" performance was in respect to LightRoom3, Starcraft II, World of Warcraft and Adobe Photoshop CS5. I'll absolutely agree that equalizing the RAM would definitely help to level the playing field but thus far in my testing with the 13" MBA @ 4GB versus the 13" MBP @ 4GB there's still some noticeable difference in favor of the MBP.

  • I have a macbook air late 2010 and keep getting a warning that my hard drive is full and to delete things so I purchased a external hard drive (1TB) but I'm just not sure what the correct way to transfer and store files to the external drive is. First MAC

I purchased a macbook air about 5 months ago and lately i keep recieving a warning that the hard drive or disk is full and that I will need to move items to trash in order to free up space on it. I purchased a external hard drive 1 TB but I'm very new to mac and ios and unsure as to how I'm suppose to transfer my files (video, pics, music etc.) from my mac over to the external hard drive in the correct way so I won't end up deleting them permenately or screwing anything up with my mac as far as the applications and programs being able to run. Am I supposed to just copy to the external hard drive and then move to and empty the trash? That's pretty much all I could come up with, but then what if i need or want to access that file again at a later time. Also, I have an i Phone and i pad so with i cloud it automatically syncs all my purcheses and if i delete something from itunes on my mac it deletes from my ipad.
I'd appreciate any kind of input i think im just a little lost here. I have to say i love my Mac and wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe a macbook pro w/more memory)... Is there something I'm missing???

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.

  • My macbook air late 2010 won't charge

I just came from Europe where I was using my Macbook Air on a daily basis, I was using a 2 prong to 2 pin prong (for EU) adapter for my charger.
The moment I came back to the USA, I removed the EU adapter and plugged it into the wall for a charge, but no charger light came on.
I tried more outlets until each one I tried did not work at all.
What is strange is this, I was using the MBA on the airplane, I used it for about 10 minutes, then closed the laptop. I expected it would have 90%+ battery, but to my surprise it was completely dead. Now, it might have been the VLC app or something not shutting down and causing the computer to be on, but figured I should mention the coincidence.
Today, I went to get another charger because I felt my charger may have broke, and same thing, no light on the charger.
What should I do? I desperately need a laptop to work from, and if I need to send this back to get repaired, etc, I really can't wait the weeks for this. Another thing is that I am located about 10+ miles from the nearest apple store in San Diego, and I dont want to take a taxi ($70 both ways) to go to the Apple store to get this resolved, what should i do?
I also ordered this from Amazon on Feb 24, 2011, I didnt keep the original invoice, but its on my amazon account. Hope that would be ok for warranty. If possible, I'd like to pay the difference and just get the new one.

If you registered it with Apple, your warantee will probably expire on/about Feb 24th. You probably should hussle into the Apple store pretty soon.  As to "paying the difference", not sure what you mean by that.  Apple doesn't take trades.
I had a similar issue with a former MB.  The Apple Genius said it was a MagSafe port issue.  I think they kept it overnight and it was fixed the next day.

  • Random freezing on a Macbook Air?

    Hello,
I am encountering random freezing on my Macbook Air, that has started in the last few weeks.
    - Applications will suddenly crash at random points
    - Sometimes Lion will pop a translucent grey screen asking me to hold down a power button.
    - I can no longer relilably install software updates, it often crashes or reports the download corrupted. Sometimes I succeed after 3 or 4 attempts.
    - To try and verify it wasn't malware, I checked with Kapersky AV for Mac (it claims it is clean), and I also manually checked for Flashback (I'm not affected)
    - Web browser frequently randomly crash, and I can't run anything that involves 3D graphics
    - it still happens even if I disable startup apps
    - Sometimes I get the forever beachball and the top bar becomes corrupt or blank
    - There is no pattern to this, except some apps seem to crash more often than others
It feels like a "hardware" issue, due to its intermittency/unpredictability/non-repeatability.
I am wondering if either my RAM or CPU is defective?  Or is this something software?
It is a 2010 Macbook Air 11.6", a little more than a year old.   What are my recourse that would result in minimum wasted time:
Sometimes it goes for an hour with no problems (I can even run 3D) and might not be able to demonstrate in front of Apple.
Unfortunately, I did not have the foresight to get AppleCare, so I'll have to expend some time and/or money.
    What is least painful?
I first backup my personal files (mostly done, as it's mostly on various cloud services)
    1. Assume it's software: Attempt to reinstall OSX, cross fingers it doesn't happen again?    Run a few overnight 3D benchmark tests to 'burn it in' and verify it is not a hardware problem?
    2. or Purchase a new Macbook Air & then bring the old Air in, then resell the Air after it's repaired?  (Minimum downtime method, high cost method)
    3. or Apple Store & try to get it repaired/serviced.   (Lower cost method)
    4. or trade it in for a discounted refurbished 2011 Air?   (If the Apple Store does this sort of stuff)
    Thanks,
    Mark Rejhon

I am able to drag photos from iPhoto to Contacts on my MacBook Air. I resize the iPhoto window to make it smaller, open Contacts, select the Contact in question and click the Edit button at the lower right of the contact. I then drag the photo from iPhoto.
The step that I'm guessing that you might be missing is clicking the Edit button at the lower right of the contact.

  • MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air

I'm going to be getting a Macbook, and its going to be either the air or the pro, and I need some help from people that understand computer peripherals better than me.
Here are the details. They are based on student pricing, with the original price in parentheses.
    MacBook Pro * price: $999 (normally $1200)
    2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    4GB 1600MHz memory
    500GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    1280 x 800 pixels
    MacBook Air (normally $1100) * 1.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
    Turbo Boost up to 2.6GHz
    Intel HD Graphics 5000
    4GB memory
    128GB flash storage
    1440 x 900 pixels
    MacBook Air advantages
Better graphics (Intel HD graphics 5000 instead of 4000 on the pro)
    Flash storage
    better screen resolution
    MacBook Pro advantages
    Faster processer
I'm just not sure how much each of these plays into the speed of the laptop. Do the Intel HD 5000, flash storage, and screen resolution make up for the slower processor or not? The only thing the MacBook Pro wins in is the processor. I'm hoping for an answer from someone who understands the factors well.

I'm a write and I use the MBA. I had a MBP for years that was solid and dependable. But I use my computer primarily for writing books, so I generally use MS Word, Safari, iTunes, Mail, Skype occasionally, and other small programs. I also we web design so I sometimes use Dreamweaver and Photoshop. I've found that the MBA handles everything I need it to brilliantly.
People will tell you that the MBP is faster and that the MBA internals are old tech (specifically the processor), and technically they're right. However, the MBA is optimized for speed. The solid state drive is so much faster than the HDD that comes standard in a MBP at opening programs and loading documents. Unless you're doing video editing or photo editing or any other processor intensive tasks, you more than likely simply will not benefit from the faster processor in a MBP.
Like the other poster said, spend some time at the Apple store playing with both. I got the maxed out 11" with the 128SSD, 4gb RAM and the 1.6GHz processor. There are tricks to keeping your disk space, such as using IMAP for your email if your mail server supports it. That way none of my email resides on my computer, and keeping my video on an external hard drive. My music takes up the lion's share of my disk space (60gb) but after I installed all my programs (keeping my documents on a cloud service and backed up on an HDD) I still have 35gb left.
I spent a couple of months going to the Apple store to play with the machine. I did everything I would conceivably do with it and it performed admirably. In the end, for me, the trade off in portability versus computing power, portability won out.
    Good luck.

  • MacBook Air (2013) i7 or i5 for Aperture 3

    Hi,
I'm willing to trade my current MacBook Pro for a new MacBook Air and there are some points on which I need some advice. I'm an Aperture user (120 GB of pictures), use Office/iWork and sometimes Adobe CS5.
1/ Do I really need i7 or i5 is enough?
2/ How can I manage the fact of not having my Aperture library on my laptop? Are NAS solutions fast enough?
    Thanks for answering

“faster is always better………that statement is an OUTRIGHT UNTRUTH,…is a fallacy which presupposes the untenable position that:
A: in all instances anyone and everyone will or would want to choose a few seconds faster processing time rather than 2-4 hours longer battery life.
As a former dirtbiker, motorcycles which are NOT FAST are the 100% choice due to their low gearing in hill climbing, where speed is BOTH not wanted, and UNDESIRABLE.
Your incapacity to see something glaringly obvious that there are “hill climbing” MAC USERS who 100 times out of 100 would far prefer 2-4 hours longer battery life over 2-4 seconds faster processing time.
The absolute hardcore fact stated above that - never HAS there been, nor never SHALL there be any computer that is "future proofed",  ……is not a claim rather a truth both time tested, and always has been a fact over the decades. IN FACT is is impossible to go back 5 years ago and buy the most expensive fastest CPU consumer computer and say “this is still up to date/ acceptable".
DWB above is logical, and his statements are correct,….so are mine. Without ANY QUESTION nobody can intelligently or logically say “faster is always better”.  ....It is not, ...it is proven not true....., it is undeniably NOT the case, both in fact, in logic, and in reasoning by reasonable people who look upon all facts.
I logically forward that a TANK , though much slower than, say a Porche, is “far better” under circumstance where the attributes of a tank are needed, ….survivability, to “last/ withstand”……..
Logically so,  longer battery life is such an instance, …….ever the moreso given stated BENCHTESTS, the I7 is “only very negligibly faster”
    Geekbench: i5: 5868, i7: 6287 (+7%)
    Handbrake: i5: 12min12s, i7:12min5s (-1%)
    Cinebench: i5: 11.13fps, i7:11.54fps (+4%)
    iMovie: i5: 5min1s, i7: 4min56s (-2%)
    PhotoShop: i5: 68.7s, i7:57.4s (-17%)
You have said ---Bigger, faster is always better. It always has been and always will be. You buy what works for you and what you can afford. That does not change the fact that bigger, faster is better.
There is no logic IN that statement, and it is patently untrue. I can afford to buy ANYTHING, but chose the I5 because
A: it has longer battery life,..
B: therefore will have after time a LOWER CHARGE CYCLE than the I7 (important!) and
C: bench tests show very very small difference in actual program speeds.
Your untenable illogical claim implies that everyone either DOES or SHOULD desire “the fastest” (cost being irrelevant) but that is both untrue and contraindicated for those desirous of a considerably longer battery life, which itself “is better”
Everything has its place and its own design for its own reasons, and to blankly, without logic, or sensibilities make a blanket inaccurate statement that “faster is always better, period”,  cannot be enjoined as either true, logical, reflective of real world desires (of longer battery life), or reflective of those who  would trade 4 seconds processing time for 4 hours LESS battery life.
