Trading in macbook pro?

I have a late 2010 macbook pro, would I be able to trade it in for a newer one? Or possibly giving it to apple and exchange giving me a credit towards apple products? Thank you for your time.

If Apple offers a recycling program in your country, you may be able to get something for it. Alternatively, sell it to a third party, including a store which carries used Macs.

  • Trading in MacBook Pro 13 inch late 2011 for a new 2012 model

Hi! I bought a 13-inch MacBook pro late 2011 model just a week ago, on 05 June 2012, from an apple premium reseller. I have hardly used it. Now apple announced their new MacBook pro line yesterday. I went to the reseller today to know whether they would give me a 2012- model MacBook in exchange for the one I bought yesterday. They said no. They said they can only give me a new MacBook if the one I bought has manufacturing defects and if I bring it to them within 10 days of my purchase. Is the reseller following the rules of apple? Can I force them to change my machine for the new one? Pls answer me. I badly need it. Pls support your statements with relevant official links.

    Ask the reseller.

  • Thinking of trading my MacBook Pro for iMac - Should I?

    Hello,
I like the large 20" screen, and bigger HD.
    Would cost me 800+MacBookPro.
    Is this a good deal?
    Frank

FWIW, I've had good luck selling a couple of my past used iMacs on eBay without using auction, but by simply picking a fair fixed price for my item. I use the Apple Store refurbished price list as a guide so that I know what the easiest alternative purchase is for a potential bidder/buyer. As long as I stay at or slightly below their number, I'm fine, since I'm not charging sales tax but do charge actual UPS shipping by weight/insurance.
A close friend in a much larger city has had good luck, and prefers, selling his occasional excess stuff through craigslist, avoiding the eBay and shipping expenses, which enables a slightly lower offering price and, hence, a "sure" sale. It suites him, personality-wise, and he does have the advantage of speaking a second language. Best of luck with whatever you do:)

My MacBook is in good condition , except some of the letters on the keyboard are scratched out. What Im trying to find out is do Mac store (or stores that sell macbooks) do trade ins ?

Apple's "Trade-in" program consists of a Recycling Program that affords participants an apple gift card for the value they assign to your computer.
The dollar amounts are not that impressive for a recent model that is in excellent condition. You can probably do better by one of Fred's suggestions.

  • Where can I get some feet for my 15" Macbook Pro (mid 2009) without the cost of A$200

I am loosing my mind. Can anuone please help?
I have a 15" mid 2009 Macbook Pro, that I love. It is my 6th Apple computer so it's not like I haven't contributed to the Apple estate.
I use it for work and study so it pretty much runns continuously and has since its purchase in 2009. So, as you can imagine wear and tear are starting to show.
3 of the 4 feet have come off and this is making me crazy. It does not ventilate properly and doesn't sit well on the desk. I have attempted to buy all manner of feet to fit it, but nothing works.
So, I took it to my local Apple store a while ago in search of some replacement feet for it. Because, Apple have to inspect all repair jobs.
I cannot buy, the feet alone, I must buy the complete bottom housing for it at the cost of A$199.00 (WHAT!!!, I HEAR YOU SAY!!!, and that is pretty much exactly what I said when I was told this by my apple genius (and yes, I did say Genius with a sarcastic tone), but certainly the thoughts that ran through my mind were far stronger).
So, in my eternal search to make my perfectly working but incredibly annoying, beloved macbook pro be as good as ever, I have been to 2 "apple" dealers in the hope to buy this product at a cheaper price. Because, 1. I don't want the base, only the feet and 2. I don't want to pay 200 bucks for it.
Anyway. the first purchase I made was through some dodgy chinese website. Apparently, there is no one at the other end, because all corespondense was ignored. But I did get my money back.
But the second has really done my head in. www.applecomponents.com had advertised the part at $US69. So, I purchased and paid with paypal and all was well with the world. But, This morning I recieved the following email. And this is the entirity of the message from a business with obviously no customer service skill, not address, no phone number. Just a rude individual at the end of the email.
Remember, this was the whole email...
"so it's looking like this part was in the wrong bin. we don't actually have one. we can get new, but it would cost around $150.
    please advise?"
***? (and I am really holding back bolding that text and setting the font size to 68).
In Australia, if a product is advertised at a price, that is what we pay for it.
So, I re-check the website and the price has increase $100 but, it still says "in stock".
Right about now, I am starting to get quite frustrated, with this faceless nameless person/company/shonk.
I get in touch with some consumer experts and reply and I recieve the following reponse...
"it was an honest mistake. we have a lot parts. we haven't sold one of these bottom cases for over 6 months. whoever labeled em' did it wrong. I don't have the part, but I have access to ordering it new with my vendor - hence the price change.
feel free to call me anytime and we can talk it out.
    thanks
    phillip
    503-806-6423"
(not really sure where this phone number resides so the 10 digits are useless)
Now, Phillip is not the person I made the payment to. The payment was made to Alex Kraft.
Who, After I demanded the product. Has just refunded my money and dissapeard off the planet.
I am sick and tired of these shonks and it is now my mission to stop these people from trading.
Sorry for my digression but, I feel, all should be aware of these people. Scammers.
But, if anyone knows where I can get some feet from someone who will bloddy supply them at a price that is reasonable.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks

your situation is not new.  Others have been told by Apple that they have to purchase the entire bottom panel in order to replace the feet.  There are engineering solutions that can solve this problem, but to pay nearly $200 to replace a part that costs less than $1 (I am being very, very conservative) to manufacture is too excessive.
I have had the feet come off as well.  Fortunately for me, I have not lost them and have been able to replace them.  Why they cannot sell them individually is a puzzle to me.  Perhaps some bean counter at Apple feels its too much effort to have these items individually  in their inventory.  I have had nothing but good comments to say about Apple, but sadly this is an exception.
To address your problem, I have seen second hand ones advertised on Ebay.  The price was a bit steep, $10 as I remember.  Other wise, wjosten's suggestion is the only alternative.
    Ciao

  • Is there a way to delete all my info on a late 08 model MacBook Pro

I Traded my iPad 2 for a late 2008 model MacBook pro, When i first recived it there wasent any install disc or anything of that nature,...There was a small amount of information "residue" of the previous owner scatterd through out, I of course wanted it to be MINE....but alas...Apple makes there MacBooks from what i can tell a single owner notebook...its wasent a problem until now when im in the process of selling it my self, I have no real way to find true, helpful, sound instructions on how i could erase all MY information from the memory,And change the administrator of the mac to maybe a default like state until new owner punches in there info?....Any info on this matter would be Greatly apperciated....at the very least maybe a way to delete things with out a restore?....again i have no disc to help in this....Just the internet and now this Apple support communite

You need to call Apple, with your serial number handy, and order a set of machine-specific discs that originally shipped with your MacBook Pro.
After you recieve the discs, following the instructions in How to prepare your Mac for sale.
    Good luck,

  • Macbook Pro C2D- best computer I have ever owned. -Sweetest deal ever-

    Hi,
I've been looking to replace an aging 12 inch 867 that I've beaten on tour for 16 months. I decided on the Macbook Pro.
I first purchased a 1.83, 2 weeks ago knowing the Core 2 Duos were coming. I was tempted by a good deal ($1699.00 including Applecare at Compusa).
I maxed out the Ram as well (2gig for $300). I than sold it to a friend on the tour for $2000 (with the ram) when they announced the Core 2 Duo. I went to the Apple Store to get the C2D, but they had not shipped yet so I grabbed a 2.0 for $1699 to hold me over (same price as the 1.83 but minus applecare) I knew they would be in the stores in less than 14 days. A few days later I traded my 2.0 in for the 2.1 core 2 duo machine. The store gave it to me for the same price as the original machine $1699, with no restocking fee either.
(don't expect this, it was a huge favor) I put 2 gigs in it for 300$ and now I have a 2.1 Core 2 Duo with 2 gigs of gam for $2000....... timing is everything.
I'm REALLY digging Apple right now....
    Oh...
And.....System Migration assistant......... I LOVE you more than ever now.
The new machine is amazing. Powerful, quiet, and way cooler. My only complaint is that the 2.0CD had the best Airport reception I've ever seen. At my hotel, my 867 Aluminum 12 inch saw 2 access points. The 2.0 saw 16, and the C2D 2.1 sees only 5 intermittently. I wonder why this is? Outside of this....... I am thrilled....
It is the best machine I have owned with the most "elegant" OS available.
    SG

Glad to hear you are soo happy, my question is why
would you buy a computer when you state that you knew
the C2D were coming out for 1600, not sure where you
got this "prime' deal for, then trade it up 14 days
later for a new model for the same price?
get me the number to the salesman you were dealing
    with... or his dealer.
    Read my post more carefully.....
my question is why would you buy a computer when you state that you knew the C2D were coming out for 1600<</div>
I said I knew the C2D's were coming out..... NOT the price.... (it was common knowledge) The price i mentioned was 1699$, that was the cost of the 1.83 CD NOT the C2D.
not sure where you got this "prime' deal for, then trade it up 14 days
later for a new model for the same price?<</div>
I did not trade in the 1.83.... i said sold it to a friend for the same price a few days later.
After the announcement of the C2D, I sold the CD 1.83, I went to pick up the C2D, but they were not in the store (and i was without an intel laptop) so I took advantage of the sale price for the 2.0 CD. I purchased the 2.0 for 1699$ at the Apple Store.
I traded the 2.0 CD in as soon as the C2D's shipped. (actually only 3 days later not 14 days later) And the salesman did me a favor by not charging me the difference.
    Get it?
    Awwwww...... don't be jealous..

  • Macbook Pro randomly restarting since installing Mavericks

    Hi guys,
I've got a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. Since I installed Mavericks, about 6 months ago, it's started restarting at random (it just goes black and then goes through the reboot cycle. Sometimes it can happen a few times in the same hour - sometimes once a week. It doesn't seem related to what programs I have open or how hot it is running. It often happens a few minutes after the machine has awoken from sleep, but this isn't always the case.
I was convinced that this was due to the faulty nVidia chip which was included in some mid-2010 MBPs so I took it to the Apple genius bar and showed them this KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 (having first done a clean install of OSX).
They ran "VST (Video System Test) 1.0.3v5 for Macbook Pro (15-inch, mid-2010)" and it passed. They then took the laptop into the back room and "ran some more hardware tests", all of which passed too.
I bought the machine back to my house and started reinstalling software. About 10 minutes ago it restarted itself again (with the same GPU panic message and GPUPanic.cpp:127 line). The only difference between this restart and those before I reinstalled Mavericks is that the previous restarts would be proceeded by a "your computer needs to restart because of a problem" whereas just now no message was displayed until the computer fully rebooted, and then a "your computer was rebooted because of an issue" message was displayed.
I've only installed a few pieces of software, and nothing that I thought would mess with the graphics drivers.
Could anyone please take a look at my logs and see if anything looks amiss? The genius has stressed that it cannot be hardware related so hopefully somebody will spot something.
The only other thing perhaps worth mentioning is that I have 3rd party RAM and a 3rd party SSD harddrive in there. Could either of these be responsible?
    Thanks,
    Joe

I just wanted to share my experiences with Apple recently.
To give some background: my mid-2010 Macbook Pro started restarting randomly after I upgraded to Mavericks and the logs indicated that it was the GPU issue. I am currently residing in Dublin so my nearest Apple store is over 100 miles away in Belfast (a 2-3 hour drive or train journey).
I first took the machine to the Apple store on the 8th March, having first made an appointment at the Genius Bar. I had entered details of the issue into the concierge system and the Genius seemed to know what he was dealing with. He ran the GPU test - which it promptly passed - but, after this point, I didn't see the Genius again as he disappeared into a back room, never to return.
About 20 minutes later (as I was beginning to get annoyed) someone else came and asked if I was being helped. I explained the situation to him and he hurriedly offered to "take it in the back to run further tests". I agreed and left the machine with him - but in all the kerfuffle I left my charger behind.
I went back and collected my laptop as the store was closing. I briefly discussed the test results with a different Genius, who suggested that it must be a software issue. He said that - as I had restored the OS to factory settings before the visit - it was most probably fixed. Given that it had not restarted since I restored the machine (the night before), I agreed and left.
Unfortunately, I didn't realise that I'd forgotten my charger until I got home. I called the store the next day but was told that it's "not Apple policy" to post things out and that if I wanted the charger I'd have to collect it from the store myself. I was then told that it would probably be better for me to "just buy a new one" given the distance involved!
Anyway, the next day I was reinstalling some software and the machine restarted again. I made a post on here and was told that the logs still suggested a faulty GPU, and that the Genius should have spotted it.
So I made another trip to Belfast!
First, I tried to collect my charger. After some crossed wire between staff members, it turned out that someone had labelled my charger and left it on the side for me to collect, but then someone else had then thrown it away. To Apple's credit, however, they gave me a new one off the shelf without hesitation.
Next, the Genius ran the same test again and this time it failed. I asked the Genius why it would be the case that the EXACT same test would pass one day and fail the next but he didn't have any ideas. It is *my* theory that the test not only checks the GPU itself, but also looks in the log folder for logs that indicate a faulty GPU and that, by restoring the OS before I took it in, I effectively "cleared" this folder and made it impossible to detect.
Anyway, he next mentioned that it was out of warranty and that I would need to pay for a repair. However, I had a printout from the trading standards site which outlined the Sale of Goods act and how (under UK law) we are protected for 6 years from purchase if a product is defective. He spoke to a couple of managers and agreed to replace the motherboard without charge.
Next, he wanted proof that I'd purchased the machine directly from the Apple website, as apparently their records only go back 18 months (!). Unfortunately, I lost some emails a couple of years back and no longer had the receipt but - after another discussion with managers - he agreed to proceed anyway.
He then said that I would have to come and collect the machine in a few days. The trading standards guidelines say that the RETAILER is responsible for arranging collection and delivery of the faulty product so I asked whether they could ship it to Dublin. However, he argued that to do this I would have to rearrange everything through AppleCare and have them collect/deliver the machine. So, having gotten this far (and not wanting them to change their minds), I just agreed.
Anyway, I received an email saying that it was ready a few days later so I went back to Belfast again and collected it. So far (touch wood) it's been working perfectly and without a single restart.
    So, the things to remember:
    1) The test may not detect the issue the first time but that doesn't mean it's not there
    2) Restoring OSX to factory settings MAY impede the ability for the test to detect the issue
    3) It doesn't matter if you're out of warranty if you're covered by Consumer Law (check out the law in your country)
    4) Don't leave your charger in the Apple store!
NB: I'm not a lawyer, of course, and none of this constitutes legal advice; I'm just hoping it will help some people as there seem to be a LOT of folks having this issue.

  • Where can I find a downloadable benchmark for the MacBook Pro?

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro and a 2006 Mac Pro. I am thinking of dumping the Mac Pro and make my MacBook my one and only computer. I want to run a benchmark on each system to see what I am trading off with this plan. Where can I find a downloadable benchmark for a Mac running OS X?

    Geekbench -> http://www.primatelabs.com/geekbench/.

  • Dead Macbook Pro - what to do next?

My son bought a new SR 2.2 15" macbook pro on June 5. It was his second, as he had bought an older model 10 days before, returned it for the new version, and paid the restocking fee. He upgraded the RAM to 3 gigs, and was really happy with it until 3 or 4 days ago, when it had a kernel panic. And then another. Reading on these boards, we found out this wasn't so uncommon -- and his did happen on battery power and he has a WPA network at home and at school. I had just told him to send me his logs so we could post them when it happened again - and this time the macbook could not be restarted. PRAM and SMU resets did nothing, and it could not be booted from install disk. It basically doesn't even turn on.
What are his options? He is taking difficult computer science and electrical engineering summer school courses and really cannot afford to send it in for a week for repairs! I'm also worried because the Apple Store genius who traded in his old one for this one was very rude and unhelpful to him when he asked to make the trade, even though he was within the 14 days and willing to pay the restocking fee. He doesn't want to deal with this guy again.
What have been your experiences with this sort of thing? What is the fastest and best route to a working computer?

OK, as per your suggestions, he took out the new RAM and reinstalled the original. He then did a clean reinstall of OS X on the advice of the local genius. It worked for about 12 hours and crashed again.

From what I've read here, this would indicate a problem with the wireless n airport, some kind of driver problem that could be fixed with a patch but hasn't yet been. Is this true?
And -- is it also true that not all SR notebooks have this issue? If he pushed for a replacement -- and he really would have to push -- would it most likely just happen again? Both his school network and his own are WPA, and the computer has crashed at both locations.

  • I am deciding whether to get the macbook pro retina (base model) or the fully customized macbook air. Opinions on which one I should get?

I am trading in my 2009 macbook pro so now I am trying to pick the one I want. I stream a lot of movies and tv shows off of netflix but otherwise I'm just an average computer user.

    Cores and speed ...
Multiply cores by the speed to get "maximum therotical processing power".  Example:
    2.8 dual = 5.6 max
    2.2 quad = 8.8 max
Plus quad-core usually have hyper-threading which can double that maximum speed.  And quad-core systems have slightly faster internal caches and other memory buses.
In theory.  Usually even the heaviest programs will not max out, but it will have a higher maximum.
If you can afford the quad-core, it gives a bit longer usable life.

  • Macbook Pro...5400 or 7200 drive?

I'm looking into trading in my Powermac G5 dual 2.5GHz for the newest 15" macbook pro, and I'm wondering which drive to get. I will be using it with FCP and Motion occasionally, but I have Mac Pro dedicated for most of the work. I plan on buying an external LaCie drive with FW800, and using it as my media drive for FCP, so I am wondering if upgrading to the 7200rpm drive is worth the $$$. I have been reading up on the speed/heat differences, but it's about a 50/50 split in opinions. Has anyone been using the Macbook Pro with a 5400rpm drive that has had speed issues when using FCS2 apps?

I've had two LaCie external drives fail me in the past couple years. One I have mounted in an ATA slot right now in a Mac Pro. I have tons of different types and LaCie is the only one I've really had problems with.
    And one Fantom drive too.

Hi Joseph. I replied to the locked out thread. I'll chime in here as well with more objectivity to your re-worded question.
    CONS:
Universal Apps not all ready - but we expected this
Not tested enough? Problems would have surfaced. Don't make the end users your R & D team - that's Microsoft's greatest shortcoming. Test them more before releasing them as the new superior computer
Pricey. But state of the art, so... Think of it as a hot-rod.
CPU whine on a percentage of the units - no action *so far* from Apple
Excessive heat - much more than what the PowerBook series generated
    PROS:
Apple's Customer Service was flawless - can't say enough about it
Out-of-box experiece was wonderful. Quality packaging even - very impressive, very detailed
    VERY FAST computer. AMAZING speed
Great overall, superior package of hardware & software
Mac OS more seamless & stable - tho my Windows experiences were not as far-fetched as Mac enthusiasts in here make them out to be
Sleek, stylish, almost makes you proud to take it out and set it up
Attention to detail. Even the MacBook Pro logo that's laser-engraved into the screen bezel reflects light and looks 'top-shelf'
Overall fit & finish exceptional (though some are not happy with the lid latches not closing all the way - but compared to most other brands but Sony & Lenovo, pretty much a non-issue)
Aside from frustration about Apple's response to heat and whine in general, mine doesn't exhibit whine, and it shouldn't for the price I paid. But I'm very content so far with using my unit as a total desktop replacement for a very powerful PC (3.4 Ghz, 2 Gb ram, multiple SATA drives, etc.). I'm still trading up to the 17" MBP to have on-board FireWire 800 & other features, and, in the hopes that it runs somewhat cooler. Hard drives should not be in high-heat environments. As long as the 17" doesn't whine, I should be more than content.

    Hi Hun
Thank you so much for your advice. And yes it worked out perfectly i am so happy with it, it is a fabulous machine, i love apple products that are very impressive with regards to technology and keeping out the viruses that all other computers can get.
I told my husband that he should be lucky and he laughed lol, yes he loves it too.  When we pay for something here we are very protected even if its a private sale, even better when through paypal, which is a good thing.  The trading standards here are very strict and have to pass all sorts and if no its thrown out plus the banks give us protection when we buy something too, if its not what it should be we are reimbursed and the seller has to pay the bank then, so yes we are very lucky.
I agree this community is fabulous, plus i am very happy also as i was able to "pay it forward" too i answered somebody's question that i knew the answer to i was so chuffed to bits hehe.
Du to my disabilities i have to spend lots of time in hospital and when at home i spend most the time on the bed due to my spinal injury, from hit and run, so robert bought me the iPad 2 when it girst came out and i have love it all the time, still do but wanted to be able to do lots more so we decided to buy another macbook and so glad i found this one, whether i have to lie down or sit on the couch even for short periods i have the macbook on a lap try, has polystyrene balls in then a hard tray attached to it so the macbook is ver on anything soft, so it is very protected.
Well sweet thank you so much for all your help, and no doubt i will have to call on you again, i will click the follow button for you and may have to bug you again lol. so no doubt speak soon.
    Take real good care
    Best regards

  • Macbook Pro Retina (2013 - SJA2 Panel) "Dingy Display"

Like many of you I have been trying to dodge the Ghosting / Image Retantion problem by returning any MBP that is either an LG SJA1 or displaying poor color uniformity (Samsung).
    I have now traded in:
    1. SJA1 - Early stages of IR
    2. Samsung - Poor Color Uniformity
    3. SJA1 - Early Stages of IR
    4. SJA2 - See for Yourself and offer your Opinion:

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.
