Traditional Simplified Chinese conversion crashes applications

I just noticed that converting traditional Chinese characters to simplified using Hanin and ITABC causes my applications to crash (Mellel and TextEdit both). I have added QIM as an input method, if that makes any difference.
In any case, has anyone else had problems? 10.4.6.

I'd suggest you report your problem on the chinese-mac mailing list, where there are a lot more people working in this language and playing with QIM.

How do Traditional & Simplified Chinese labels work in Narrative Reports

Hi There,
I need to create a narrative report which will display the field labels in the language that the user has specified.
For instance, if the user's default language is Simplified Chinese, how can I set the narrative report to automatically translate the field labels?
Is there a way to do this as we have multiple users with different languages specified as their defaults.

Chinese Conversion Error. Please Help

I upload some article desc. in Traditional Chinese. System does a translate and the converted Simplified Chinese is not of correct translation. The meaning of the converted word is wrong. Our system is not unicode compliant yet and are using double byte.(rel 4.7)
How can the system convert the input into the correct simplify chinese?

My system is not a unicode based OS. The translation is based on ABAP statement "TRANSLATE" which convert all the small cap hex char to big cap hex char which result in misinterpration of the chinese character.

Simplified chinese vs Traditional chinese.

Hi!
I'm doing a java application which displays some chinese characters. These chinese characters can either be in Simplified chinese format or Traditional chinese format. I use unicode to get these chinese characters and store them into a hashmap in unicode format.
The question is: if a chiense character has 2 form, one in simplified and the other traditional, when convert to unicode. Are they suppose to have the same unicode value or 2 different values to represent them in 2 forms?

Yes, they will use the same Unicode value.
Traditional and Simplified differ in two ways, really.
1) Traditional covers a lot more charaters - 4E00 right up to 9FFF. That's over 20000 characters.
I'm not quite sure which Unicode number Simplified stops at, but I know its range is much smaller, probably around 8000 characters (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!). Both Traditional and Simplified start their range at 4E00, so both know how to display the first 8000 characters (or whatever) after this.
2) The two encodings will display their Kanji slightly differently. Traditional-encoded Kanji generally appear more rounded and calligraphic. Simplified Kanji usually look like they've just come off a Chinese typewriter. ;-)
Also, the Kanji may have a stroke or two added or removed here and there between the two encodings (so the odd dash might appear in one and not the other), or the stroke order of the Kanji may change slightly, resulting in them appearing slightly differently.
Of course, this is pretty much all down to the way the fonts display the Kanji anyway, but I find that fonts that support the full Traditional encoding range are more rounded (MingLiU, PMingLiU), while those that support only the Simplified range look very rectangular and blocky (SimHei, SimSun). But that might just be me. ;-D
You should choose between Traditional and Simplified encoding depending on whether you're going to be using a pretty broad range of Kanji (including a few rarely-used ones), and whether you want your Kanji to look pretty or just plain functional. ;-)

Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters couldn't be displayed!

Hi all,
Recently I installed an Oracle 9i Database Server (9.0.1).
Problem regarding the globalization support issue was encountered after the installation of Oracle 9i Database Server. Parameters in NLS table had been checked that the language is initially set to AMERICAN, territory is set to AMERICA and the character set is UTF8.
Since traditional and simplified chinese characters must be required for the HK server, it is believed that the above parameters should be altered to TRADITIONAL CHINESE / SIMPLIFIED CHINESE, HONG KONG and ZHT16MSWIN950 / ZHS16CGB231280 respectively.
I tried to alter the NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS, but its not working; should the NLS_SESSION_PARAMETERS be changed instead? I also tried this one, changes is taken place but the chinese characters still couldn't be displayed, just bunches of 亂碼 (meaningless codes) instead.
Another piece of information is that the Oracle server is installed on the basis of Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, should the Language for non-Unicode programs (which is in the Advanced page of the Regional and Language Settings) be configured to Chinese (HKSAR)? Various combinations, in terms of English (US), Chinese (HKSAR), Chinese (PRC), Chinese (Taiwan), had been taken turns to test for the results. However, same results happened.
Hence, how should we configure? Please advice us.
P.S.# It is known that this question should be placed in the "Globalization Support" forum, I have done that; however, it is hoped that I could seek more advice in here.

Setting up such an environment requires some sophistication and know how. I would advise reading though the Globalization Support Guide and som of the papers on the Globalization Home Page http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/globalization/index.html
before randomly attempting to change parameters. If your requirement is to store and retrieve both TRADITIONAL and SIMPLIFIED CHINESE then your database needs to be Unicode (UTF-8). Designing an application that allows you to easily access multilingual data requires careful design and planning. If you are simply trying to quickly display data you have in your database you might want to use iSQL*PLUS which is browser based and will allow you to display Unicode data. Change over from traditional chinese and simplify chinese

I am using a MacBook Pro, Hardware : 2010 Q3 product, OS : OSX 10.6 Current OS : OSX 10.7.5
My problem is when I select writing language by using Trackpad handwriting in Traditional Chinese, I write a word in Simplify Chinese, it can give me a Traditional Chinese for selection. But when I change over from Traditional Chinese to Simplify Chinese, I write in Traditional Chinese, it never give me a correct word in Traditional Chinese, I think it is a BUG and I have visit Genius Bar at Apple Shop, nobody can solve thie problem,

How to convert simplify chinese to traditional chinese

My Buyers received new articles from both China and Taiwan. Excel from Taiwan contain simplify chinese. Our system maintained in Traditional Chinese. During article creation thru excel upload, the Chinese description is distorted.
Is there any FM that can allow me to convert it before passing it on for SAP updates?

Hello, I am creating 3 versions of a class - Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and English.
I understand that some of the Adobe fonts (Heiti, Fangsong, etc.) are more appropriate for one Chiese version or the other. Can someone advise which are for Traditional and which are for Simplified Chinese?
This has been such a long and trying process; I appreciate any and all help.

Cannot convert Simplified chinese and Traditional chinese in moutain lion

After installing Mountain Lion, I cannot use the service "convert simplified chinese to traditional chinese" and vice versa. This happens in TextEdit, Pages, Notes, and other programs.
The following message appears when I try to use this service. But even if I click "Run Service", nothing happens.
Does anyone has the same problem? How can I fix this?

Mac App Store Hong Kong uses Simplified Chinese!!! No more Traditional Chinese? Why?

I entered the Mac App Store Hong Kong using my Hong Kong Apple ID. I was expecting to see the names and descriptions of apps to be using Traditional Chinese characters. But what I saw was Simplified Chinese instead.
How can I turn them back to Traditional Chinese?

I was talking about the OS X App Store on Mac, not the iOS App Store that you showed on iTunes.
While the mainland China has simplified Chinese and made Simplified Chinese commonly used in mainland China, Hong Kong has remained its traditional learning, teaching and using Traditional Chinese as the dominant and main written language in all non-English newspapers in Hong Kong and the education environment. In addition, the phrases in Traditional Chinese are not the same as those in Simplified Chinese.
Thus, while the OS X App Store in mainland China is using Simplified Chinese, the OS X App Store in Hong Kong should be provided in Traditional Chinese.

to download traditional and simplified Chinese fonts and install them into Photoshop (if I can find a site that will allow me to download them)? Would I just download them and install them to my Windows font folder and Photoshop would display them under its font tool just like it would Times Roman, Verdana, etc?

Yes, fonts are handled by the system. Depending on what type of fonts you may however still need to change your system language and region settings to actually get access to them...
