Traffic throughput measurement

Greetings, all I'm looking for a router that will measure and log data throughput, (transmit and receive) in Bytes (or multiples thereof). this preferrably on a monthly basis. My ISP has imposed a maximumum GB count per month, so I would like to be able to keep an eye on the usage. Any of you Linksys users have this feature on your router??

Hello I'm looking for a way to measure the amount of data that I'm receiving from my ISP as well as the amount that I'm sending to them, since the ISP has imposed a maximum monthly usage. What I've done so far is make a note on my calendar every day of my usage, which I can find under Windows Task Manager, Networking tab. I find this a pain in the neck, especially when you have to do that for more than one computer every day. So this is why I'm looking for a device that will do it for me on a monthly basis. So far (as also Badboy stated) I've been unable to find a router that will do this for me, I wonder if maybe I should look at Cisco?? Thanks vm

  • MDNSResponder problem / network traffic reduction measures in effect

[Part I in a series of "Why Does My Machine Randomly Shut Down And Related Oddities" :-D ]
Below you can see a bunch of log output which seems to show a network problem. My connection is not too fast, which I've blamed on my low tier of U-Verse, but this makes me wonder. And it seems to occur each wakeup.
"network traffic reduction measures in effect" I've found mentioned as an AirPort problem.
    BUT, my AirPort is OFF.
(Plus, why is it changing the host name and then back again?)

Is that an actual dump from your logs? If so, I find it strange - not least because the timestamps are not consecutive. That certainly makes it harder to trace what's going on.
Deciphering it as best I can, I'd say you have a flaky network. This could be due to cabling or some process on the machine that's interrupting sleep - I find it strange that many of the mDNSResponder messages are timestamped while the machine is asleep. That could be related to the various wake-on-LAN options - are they enabled in System Preferences -> Energy Saver?

  • Data throughput measurement tool

    Hi,
I am looking for a tool that can do TCP/UDP upload/download and measures the datathriughput (having PER would be great). I have the internet toolkit and currently I am doing on the MS-Dos screen the ftp command mget/mput and copy manually the rate into notepad.
There are several codes doing ftp but non of it helps me further to catch the line needed i.e. data rate etc.
I attach you an example code I caught up in the net
    Thanks

    Yariv3G,
I recall your asking a similar question before. Here's my take: I'm not familiar with PER, but if you're looking for a fairly good measure of "X bytes sent/received in Y seconds" (similar to what you get from the command-line FTP client) and if you've got the Internet Toolkit, then you should be able to get a good result with Tick Count and the String Length or File/Directory Info functions.
I don't recall what LabVIEW version you're using, so I've attached a picture of an extremely simple example that demonstrates how to measure the FTP download speed of one file. When I run it on a 4.5 MB file, I get a throughput value nearly identical to the one I get for the same transfer on the command-line.
    Regards,
    John

  • Lan connection throughput measurement

Im looking for fairly easy and reliable way to measure Lan throughput between 2 Lan cards in one PC (lan cards connected with hub). Ive found simple example with ftp server but it wasnt accurate enough comparing with other software.
    thanks
    Krystian

Ping would be good for round-trip times.
Throughput tests would involve passing different sized data sets from one node to the other, then dividing the data set size by the time required to transfer.

  • Full Traffic Logging

I'm using too much bandwidth, and hitting my ISP caps, which is expensive! I need to do full traffic logging to see exactly where the problem lies - I'd like to know IP address vs data per hour + actual traffic throughput in bytes/sec, ideally.
I've read earlier posts here that suggest setting logging onto the Airport Express (mine is on Version 6.3) to level 8 - presumably traffic detail. My Airport only goes to level 7 - Debug. Is there an upgrade to the software or something else that I can do to get a higher level of logging?
Alternatively, is there a way to turn on logging on all my Macs and then centralise this? I've got four or five machines on my wi-fi network (I'm not sure if the iPhone counts, but it might be responsible for some of this traffic problem)?
How do I turn on IP logging

To log all the internet traffic on your local network you need to have router that supports that functionality. The only utilities I have found measures total in and out traffic using a utility called airport flow.
I have an airport base station but only use it as an access point my main router is a mini pc running router software called pfsense on which I have installed a utility called bandwidthd this graphs total traffic and per individual IP address.
bandwidthd is available for mac osx but you cant install it on our aiport base station you would have to install it in each individual mac.

  • ASR1002 throughput degradation when wccp redirect-list is changed

We have two ASR 1002's going to 2 different WAN service providers, and two 7371 WAE load balanced by mask assignment. When we change the ACL (adding or removing lines) from our wccp redirect-list, the throughput on interfaces applied to the wccp service-groups is degraded to almost no traffic passing, until we completely remove wccp service group from the global configuration and then reapply. Then traffic throughput on the interface goes back to normal.
Our ACL defined in the redirect list specifies our specific networks on our WAN that have WAE's and need the redirection. All other networks are denied implicitly. We need to regularly change this ACL, and this service interruption is a major issue. This was not an issue before moving to the ASR platform from 7206's.
At TAC's request we have upgraded our IOS version to 15.1(3)S4 and that did not make any difference. Does anyone know why this occurs and if there is a way to work around this other than removing wccp configuration and adding back, every time the ACL needs to be modified?
As a side note to this... We have recently added riverbed appliances, and created separate service groups with separate redirect-lists. The exact same behavior occurs on the ASR 1002 when the ACL for the riverbed's redirect list is altered.

Thank you very much for sharing that information.  It is great to hear verification that the mask assignment change did resolve your problem.   That is the latest resolution that TAC has recommended, but we have to restart the WCCP service on all redundant edge routers to be able to implement this, so planning the outage window is taking some time.   We've been told that TAC will set this up in a lab and test for us by our Cisco SE.  We're hoping to get verfication that this actually resolves the problem before we take the outage.
If you could, can you tell me if this resolved the issue 100% or do you still have any performance issues when making a change to your WCCP ACL going to your bluecoat equipment?    We may also need to implement this in our redirects to BlueCoat from our Nexus.  Do you happen to have a link to how to make this change in Bluecoat?   Thanks again!

  • How to measure the bandwidth from a certain network.

    Hi all,
I am trying to measure the BW from a certain network on my nic.
I have used snoop in order to do it.
The problem is I cannot snoop all day long...the snoop is taking resources from the machine.
Is there another way to do this?
tried several tools to measure BW, but none of them gave me the option to distinguish between hosts and networks.
    BTW,
In order to measure the toal BW on the nic,
I am using SNMP MIB oids in order to determine how many packets were received and how many were sent. (but this is not what I need)
If you have an idea I will be glad to hear about it..
    Thanks!
    Tomer.

raw throughput measurement is typically done with a utility like "TTCP" or "IPERF". However even if you use the correct tool, if you are a newbie with network measurement you can make rookie mistakes. The common one I see is using a tool like TTCP with one stream to measure gigabit. You need to create at least a few streams and test with different numbers of streams. This is to better model what multi-streamed applications actually do on the wire to 'fill the pipe'. You then take those individual streams and total their throughput to get a number (and set expectations).
Just as multiple streams make a gigabit interface more efficient, there is a law of dimishing returns. You can see this by running multiple tests and adding in streams until the the total throughput starts to drop off.
This has been my experience with gigabit and TTCP. Nowadays you have 10gig on the scene and probably even larger NICs to come and I've not worked with these as much.
Also keep in mind that you never get 100Mbps on a 10/100 NIC or a full gigabit of throughput on a 10/100/1000 NIC.
The TTCP utility utilizes the "sender/receiver" method. That should work for your NIC on the problem network. Have one machine be a sender and the other a receiver, then swap them around. TTCP is a text based tool, no fancy GUI, just so you know.
and never, ever use applications like "ftp" to "measure" your throughput. Too much over head to get a "raw" reading AND single threaded apps don't fill the pipe as well.
    hope that gets you started.

  • WAAS and Netflow, traffic reports are inflated unpredictably

Not sure if anybody has any luck getting Netflow to report correctly when WAAS is in a picture.  We have about 30 sites deployed with WAAS in out of line configuration and every single one of them incorrectly report Netflow traffic to our NetQoS Reporter Analyzer product.  Typically the traffic throughput seems to be inflated several times higher.  We tried every which way to alter the netflow configuration in the router including Egress Netflow but the traffic is still showing higher than actual traffic coming out of a port.  In one site, even the "show interface" command on the router shows 5-minute rate of 16Mbps on a 6Mbps Mulitlink circuit.

    Hello Thang Lu,
We have run into this issue with a few customers and here are a some things to consider:
    - If you have 'Flexible' NetFlow enabled: Beware, Flexible NetFlow does not export the flow direction by default you must configure the direction bit to be set for egress flows.  Traditional NetFlow v9 does this automatically.
    - Are you excluding certain protocols in NetQoS?  If you don't do this, some tunnels and VPN connections will be exported twice!
These are the protocols we exclude by default in Scrutinizer NetFlow Analyzer:
I hope these suggestions help you.

  • FEX 6800-IA interface high drop rate and high overrun counters combined with slow throughput.

The interface drop rate count arises and the traffic throughput gets down to 15% of the nominal data rate of the 1Gb interface  when a server with a 10Gb interface send data to a client connected at 1Gb FEX interface.
How must I configure  the interface to achieve nearly 100% of 1Gb?

  • How to Stop Thread Within TestStand

I am a relative "newbie" to TestStand in this aspect.  I am creating an sequence to generate CAN Bus Traffic in hopes of getting to a more accurate throughput measurement.  The Subsequence I am creating is a designed infinite loop and I am specifying that the loop be run in a separate thread from the Execution Options setting.
My question is how I then kill this thread in the cleanup of my sequence.  Since I plan to run the sequence multiple times would not want to have multiple threads running unchecked on my machine.
I can't see an easy way to do this.  I imagine something like this has been accomplished before.
    Any suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The best way to do this to have your main thread tell the other thread when it is time to exit and then after the main thread has done this it should then wait for the other thread to exit (the waiting will happen automatically if you had the "Automatically wait at end of sequence" checkbox checked on your asynchronous sequence call step).
One of the easiest ways to do this is to pass a boolean parameter by reference into your asynchronous subsequence and have your subsequence check that boolean periodically to see if it should exit. The main sequence can then set this boolean in its cleanup steps.
Another way is to use a Synchronization step type such as a notification step type and have your asychronous sequence check for a notification that your main sequence will set in its cleanup.
It's important that your main sequence wait for the other thread to exit before completing so either use the "Automatically wait at end of sequence" sequence call option or add an explicit wait step to your cleanup of your main sequence after you have notified the other thread to exit.
    Hope this helps,
    -Doug

  • Bandwith Capacity Planning for 100 user SSL VPN Facility

What are things we should conisde while doing the  bandwidth capacity planning for SSL VPN Facility for 100 users  ?

    Hi Surya,
This is not an easy question, since there are so many things to consider that I may miss some of them.
1- In case you are planning to use an ASA, check this to find the ideal throughput for you:
             Compare Models
2- What type of traffic? TCP or UDP?
         If TCP
Make sure you avoid fragmentation, adjust the MSS value if necessary.
         If UDP
If fragmentation must happen, then set the DF bit to clear to allow it.
3- Make sure the clients always negotiate DTLS (which is by default).
As mentioned in the document above:
"Maximum throughput measured under ideal test conditions.
VPN throughput and sessions count depend on the ASA device configuration and VPN traffic patterns. These elements should be taken into consideration as part of your capacity planning."
    Thanks.

  • Site Survey Questions

    Hello,
I have a question about surveying. I have been doing site surveys and all the site surveys that I have done were all passive mode. I use AirMagnet with Proxim card. I know that there is an active mode for doing wireless site survey. My question are:
    1. When do I need to do an active site survey?
    2. What is the difference between active and passive mode?
    3. What is the advantages and disadvantages of each mode?
    4. For post site survey, which mode should I used?
I know that the passive mode is in monitor mode and I don't need to associate with an AP whereas active mode I need to associate with the AP.
    Thanks

    Granted, this is My Opinion:
    1. When do I need to do an active site survey?
When you are troubleshooting an issue.  And/Or needing to do throughput testing, on a live network.
    2. What is the difference between active and passive mode?
Active survey's you are actually connecting to the SSID, so you can pass traffic and measure the results.
    3. What is the advantages and disadvantages of each mode?
Active Survey - Allows you to see more information on packet frames, as you are connected to the SSID.  You can watch and test roaming, throughput etc.
Passive Survey - Is what you want to use when you are doing a pre-install survey, or even a post install validation survey.

    Steve

If you can find the "panic log", it would probably be more helpful than the system.log.
Two possible causes immediately come to mind, since you say the problem occurs with both Tiger and Leopard:
    1) The leading cause of kernel panics is RAM. Has the RAM in this Mini been upgraded since it left the factory? Most RAM problems will not be detected by the Apple Hardware test. The most definitive test is to swap out the RAM. If the problem disappears, then the prior RAM was the cause.
    2) Since you say this occurs during "taxing jobs", then overheating has to be considered. Be sure the mini has free access to room temperature air -- and that it is not sitting on other heat-producing equipment. Even so, its cooling ability may have been compromised over time by a build-up of dust or pet hair inside the Mini or on its vents. It is also possible that the thermal pad between the CPU and the heatsink is breaking down and causing poorer heat transfer.
If the problem is heat-related I would expect the fan to increase in speed and loudness before the crash. Are you hearing this?

  • ICal server will not work

I am running a small network on a MacPro running OS X server 10.5.4 with 2 mac clients and 2 windows clients. The OS X server was installed by an apple specialist but it is still not working properly and I find it hard to believe that it is a bug is the software as it seems to be a fundamental problem which most people would have encountered.
Each user has their home directories stored on a separate drive on the server and iCal server is running. However, when a Mac client logs into the network they iCal does not work properly. It either will not show any calendars or if it does then a new event cannot be entered.
Below is an extract from the client message log from rebooting the machine. The first problems with iCal seem to occur at 1:20:48:

Once loaded iCal does not respond and a "force quit" is the only option.
I have looked at the logs in Server Admin and I can't seem to see any problems at about the same time.
I would be grateful if someone could let me know whether this is a bug with the software or whether there is a solution. For the time being, the mac users are having to use portable home directories in order to allow them to use iCal.

    Hi
I've not long ago spotted it. It is a longish log. I would sort out that problem anyway because it can't be good for that user.
What needs to happen is a sampling of a the log server side when the problems occur for the clients. It would be a good idea if you posted a little more about how the server is configured. Are you using Server Preferences to administer the Server by any chance? What is the result of issuing this command from terminal:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Post the result. Did the apple engineer configure internal DNS & DHCP Services to accommodate the web and ical services? Is the web service running? Are you using virtual domains? Are the client macs using the Server to resolve DNS?
As you can see lots of questions. If you are using Server Preferences then I'm going to have to stop trying to assist you. Please don't think there is anything wrong with your server because you are using the application, because there is not. Neither is there anything wrong with the choices made by the original guy. It's just I don't deal with anything other than Advanced. I have little knowledge of Server Preferences. Please don't be tempted to 'convert' to Advanced thinking it may 'improve' matters. It's just as likely it will make things worse.
Consider getting the original guy back in and having him do it for you again. Who knows you may find things will go a lot smoother this time?
    Tony

  • Connection drops or extremely slow connection

    Hello,
I have an Early 2008 Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.5. By the time I was running on 10.5.2 my Wi-Fi connection used to work perfectly, but when I updated to 10.5.3 I started to have so many problems with it that I even went back to 10.5.2 for a while.
I remember posting a thread in a forum and people answered me that it was impossible for a software update to mess up my connection. I proved it by downgrading and gaining full connectivity back. I've also found hundreds of people who have been having the exact same problem, but it appears as if Apple just doesn't care enough to give a definitive solution. Instead, I've tried tons of other so-called solutions from other people, that have not done anything good for me.
The problem is as follows: I can perfectly connect to my home network, but after 30 seconds- 2 minutes, my signal drops to just 1 bar (from full 4 bars) and I can no longer use it. To fix it, I have to disable my Airport card and then enable it back, to get another 30 seconds - 2 minutes. If I ever get to be connected for more than 2 minutes, my connection gets reaaaally slow (as slow that it can take me more than 5 minutes to download a 100 KB file).
Anyway, I'm 100% sure this is a SOFTWARE issue since the same computer running on Windows and resting at the exact same place doesn't have a single problem connecting. Of course, it has nothing to do with my router configuration. It is completely, entirely, 100% a problem related to Mac OS X 10.5.3 and above.
I love my computer in many ways, but this issue has been killing me bit by bit. What does a computer without a proper Internet connection work for? Then you can remotely understand my frustration.
Please, if you have had the same problem post it here. Apple has to do something about this, because I can't believe I bought such a useless computer!
    Thanks.

Have tried both your suggestions ( and every other on Discussions). Here is this mornings console log:
