Does anyone have real world performance comparison of this two? Which one should I buy?

I have the real life performance results for TS256GMTS400: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W540-mSATA-as-boot-disk/m-p/1611164#M46589 . Write performance is not at SATA3 level, but to be honest, in the real life operations subjectively I do not see any difference working with ToonBoom StoryBoard Pro, Adobe CC, Camtasia. My experience is definitely "contaminated" with the additional SSD where I store the data.
From what I have read while googling, the MDM242-SB-256 should have higher write performance.

  • T500 2242-4FU Keyboard and other questions

    Hi.
I am considering buying a used T500 2242-4FU and wanted to know if this model has the updated, sturdier keyboard.
If not, is it possible to upgrade it to the better keyboard?
I currently use the Z60M and would like to know if the keyboard, which is what I buy Thinkpads for, will be comparable.
    Thanks

    Way to oversize your font.
The T500 and Z60 keyboards are compatible. If the model you get has the lightened keyboard, you can just buy a solid-backed one elsewhere.

  • Geekbench score should be higher (new Mac vs older Mac)

Hello, I have a Mac Pro 2006 1,1 model that has been upgraded to an 8-core x5355 cpu, a 280x gpu, an ssd drive, etc. its geekbench score went from about 4,800 to about 9,500 (after these additions). After that, i ran a geekbench test on another, newer Mac, and the score was at about 10,500, but it performed VASTLY superior to the older Mac. For example, when using Open Broadcast to stream a video game running on the mac to Twitch.tv, the cpu usage would be at around 50 percent (so all 8 cores would show about 50 percent usage each(, and if i tried to view my broadcast simultaneously on google chrome, it would just to about 80 percent usage. On the newer Mac, I ran the same test, and it was only at about 5-10 percent usage for each of the 8 cores when simply streaming, and about 10-20 usage when streaming AND viewing the stream on google chrome. I even added more window captures to the feed, and it wouldnt tax the CPU. The GPUs were the same in the comparisons. So does that mean that geekbench isn't really testing CPU performance, or something?

When combined with a M.2 to PCIe adapter, the Samsung XP941 provides class-leading storage performance in desktop machines and is also fully bootable in all cMP Mac Pro models (2006-2012, excluding the 'tube' model). See the table at the bottom of this page for approximate throughput figures.

To use this SSD in a desktop machine or cMP Mac Pro (all 2006-2012 models prior to the current cylindrical shaped one), you will need a free PCIe slot, and an M.2 to PCIe adapter. Booting is supported in the Mac Pro.
Note, system boot on Windows desktop PC's is only supported on certain Z97 and X99 chipset-based motherboards with built-in M.2 sockets. Booting with the XP941 is not currently supported in a Windows PC with the XP941 drive in conjunction with the adapter , but it works perfectly without drivers as a storage drive.
Review our M.2 SSD compatibility list blog post if you are not sure if this drive is compatible in your machine.
    You might also need....
A M.2 (NGFF) to PCIe adapter card - so you can install this drive in a standard desktop case or Mac Pro tower computer.
A PCIE M.2 SSD to USB 3.0 external enclosure - so you can clone, copy, or retrieve data from this drive or an existing one already in your system.
    * To achieve maximum throughput in the 2008 Mac Pro, one or two of the PCIe 2.0 x16 slots must be used. These models have two x16 PCIe 2.0 slots and two x4 PCIe 1.0 slots. The latter PCIe 1.0 slots will only allow up to 585-753MB/s data transfer rates.
    Data Throughput Rates
Throughput rates are provided in the table below. See the performance notes regarding slower PCIe 2.0 x2 and PCIe 1.0 slots
** From the review at barefeats.com: "Using the 'Expansion Slot Utility' in the System/Library/CoreServices folder, we reconfigured the PCIe slot speeds to various combinations of 4, 8, and 16 lane slots to benchmark the XP941. The transfer speeds above were achieved using the 4 lane slots. The 8 lane and 16 lane slots did not produce any faster transfer speeds. On other other hand, if you use a 1 lane slot, the transfer speeds drop to 200MB/s READ and 170MB/s WRITE. We tested with both OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard. OS X Tiger kernel panicked at startup. Though we didn't try it, it should also work with OS X Lion, the last Mac OS to be officially supported on the 2006 Mac Pro."

  • W540 Hard Drive Confirmation

I ordered ordered one W540 from leneovo and got the info that W540 can accomodate all the following.
    1) 512GB Solid State Drive SATA3 HDD
    2) 500GB HDD 7200rpm HDD
    3) DVD Recordable
and they also told that in W540 series they can accomodate  DVD Write and 2 HDD as mentioned above.
Can it accomodate all three, I thought ony two were possible.
    Can someone please confirm this.
    Solved!

Not all 3 of your's configuration inside the W540 cases.
    The W540 model has:
1 slot for 2.5" HDD/SDD; this slot can be only used for 2.5" HDD/SDD.
1 slot for DVD; this slot can be either used for DVD/BluRay or via caddy (adapter) for 2.5" HDD/SDD, which is actually the case ident to DVD case but holding HDD/SDD inside.
and 1 M.2 slot; this slot can be either used for WWAN card or for 2242 type of small factor SSD. The biggest size currently available on the market is 256GB like the one I use (see my signature).

  • T430s or T431s? and a key question concerning the T431s mSATA slot

    T431s or T430s?
First let me apologize for my English, sorry if reading through this cause you any headache…
I gave away my T410 (bad bad decision) the day after I got a i7 Yoga 13 with 256G SSD, and bought a M4 256G which I planned to put in the free mSATA slot, only to find out i can't live with that yoga keyboard and that huge off-center touchpad which gets in the way all the time a few days later... anyway, end up returned that yoga13 and is using my heavily abused limping T500 now with a replaced motherboard... I was looking to go back to thinkpad and buy a T430s right away but Lenovo announced T431s one day afterwards. now i dont know what to choose, although leaning towards T431s a little bit.
things i'm looking for in my next laptop: first X1C is not an option for me, I can’t accept that screen with high dot pitch.
l  weight: less than my T410, it doesnt have to be light as an Acer S7 or Samsung 9, just reasonably lighter, and as slim as possible.
l  Processing power: doesn’t really matter, anything i5 or i7, M or U… all fine to me, I can run Lightroom, DPP and video processing applications on my desktop and I don’t play games. 8G or more RAM is needed.
l  Storage: comes with 256GB SSD or user upgradeable to 256GB SSD is an absolute minimum requirement, but I really prefer any flexibility to configure a second drive, HDD or SSD, is a big plus, preferably HDD as the second drive.
l  Screen: wouldn’t mind squeezing my eyes on a FHD screen, but I can only settle on a 900p, afterall I’m looking for a thinkpad, have to live with that screen, right?
l  Tough… every one of my laptop gets dropped once or twice… many many times in the case of my old T410… so it needs to be tough…
    l  Not much else…
So, T431s is lighter, slimmer, user replaceable 7mm SSD, mSATA available (a concerning question later), all good, and I like the new look. And I don’t care much about the indicators, lid lock, flipped logo or that new touchpad (I think I can manage, maybe…).
So what do I have to sacrifice if I choose T431s? removable battery, ultrabay for optical drive and HDD, full voltage cpu, and possibly a couple hundred dollars… since we don’t know for sure how much optional parts will cost in customized build, and of course the risk of buying an unproven, newly designed product. Did I miss any other key point?
If I didn’t miss many advantages that T430s have, I probably should go with T431s, it was all good until I found a video which shows how to disassembled a T431s (http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNTI5NzIxMzg4.html) and at about 4 mins in, it shows that the WWAN card is secured by a single retaining screw in the middle on the outer edge, unlike typical mSATA SSD which should be secured on the 2 corners of the board. Does this mean users can no longer install a mSATA SSD on T431s? if so, I can only have one 7mm SSD instead of having OS installed on a 256G mSATA, and have a 500G HDD to storage all the photos and videos, which I was intended to do, that maybe a deal breaker…
I don’t really understand these hardware upgrades, can some one please tell me for sure whether the mSATA slot on T431s, as shown in the video, can be used to intall a regular mSATA SSD. If I can, I’ll probably still struggle to make the decision, if it can’t be used to install SSD, T430s it is.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Kai
    Solved!

thanks, yes, it's the new NGFF M.2, and the new form factor is a lot more complicated than the old mSATA slot, different dimensions for different storage size, and it maybe single side for WWAN, cashe drive, or double side for actual SSD perfermance...
if i'm gonna get a T431s, i'll just buy the 320G 5400RPM low end drive, make a recovery media from Win8, and reset to factory setting after intall a 512GB 840 Pro, or the much cheaper M4...

  • [SOLVED] Arch with kernel 3.15.1 hangs/reboots in early boot

    Hi all,
Recently I bought Asrock D1800B-ITX and I installed Arch without seeing any error messages.
However, when I rebooted to the installed system, the kernel hangs after printing "Booting the kernel."
What should I do next to troubleshoot this?
    PC spec:
    CPU: Intel Celeron J1800
Mobo: Asrock D1800B-ITX (BIOS version 1.4)
    RAM: Transcend DDR3L-1333 2G x2 (passes memtest86+ 5+ times)
    SSD: Crucial m4 64GB (M4-CT064M4SSD1)
    What I tried to do:
The installation method is the same as the Beginners' guide on the ArchWiki.
Arch ISO 2014.06.01 written in a USB memstick by dd is used to install Arch.
Both UEFI (tried first) and BIOS installation won't work.
Changing the HOOKS variable in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf won't affect the symptom (tried "base udev ...", "base systemd ..." and "systemd ...").
The kernel from linux-lts package (3.10.44 as of writing) and 3.14.4 (included in Arch ISO 2014.06.01) boots.
The console output (tty0) from the kernel with "debug" appended to the kernel parameter is messed up like the image if framebuffer is enabled.
If framebuffer is disabled, I got some error messages like this image("debug" appended).
The serial console output from the kernel 3.15.1-1 with "debug boot_delay=5000 console=ttyS0,115200n8r" appended to the paramaters is below:

Does the parameter maxcpus=1 affected to your system?
Wow, with your paramater the kernel boots!
However, the framebuffer is still broken (the same white artifacts, but many of them).
I'm considering filing this issue as a bug in the Kernel Bug Tracker...
I also tried unplugging all of the USB devices connected (the reason is this page, linked from the thread you mentioned), but no luck.
Here is the serial console output (in the hope of potentially helping others):

  • Upgrading Early 2009 Mac Pro to Yosemite

I need an upgrading for dummies tutorial   I want to upgrade some applications that I use and can not do that with Mountain Lion which is currently on my Early 2009 Mac Pro. (Processor 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - Memory 12 GB - Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB - OSX 10.8.5). My monitor is a NEC MultiSync P221W and I use Spectraview II to calibrate. I also have an older Dell monitor attached that I only use for palettes, etc.
I have discovered I can not upgrade to Mavericks and will need to go to Yosemite. I am nervous about the process and undecided what is the best way to tackle this. I assume I will first need to do a full backup and do have a bootable drive that I can use. Can I then just install Yosemite or is it best to do a clean install? I have heard so many negative things about installing Yosemite that I am really uncertain of the best way to tackle this. I am particularly concerned about the reports of system slow down.I have an even older MacBook Pro that is also running Mountain Lion but I have no plans to attempt an upgrade on it. It has had problems since it was fairly new and right now I use an external keyboard and a mouse because using the track pad or keyboard on the laptop cause it to lock up. (Long story and multiple rebuilds during and after Apple Care). So at this point the only machine I am concerned about is the desktop. I use it mainly for Photoshop and Lightroom and Quicken. If someone can give me some advice I would be most appreciative. I am an older gal with casual computer knowledge, living out in the sticks and really have no one available for help. Thanks in advance

Depending on how hard you push your system, size of files you work with.
You may want to look into 5,1 firmware; a W3690 or X5690 3.4GHz 6-core even to help more.

  • Thinkpad T440p - "Thinking" of buying - Questions

Hello everyone! I am a long time stalker of the community and have been a fan of the ThinkPad series for a few years now and am looking to purchase my first one. A T440p, been looking at used and referbished models. First I have a few questions.
    1. If I would get one with an SSD, does the SSD occupy the 2.5" bay or the mSata bay?
    2. Is there a substantial difference between the 6cell/9cell battery, I have noticed with machines from other makes that it is sometimes not the case.
    3. If I get one without the webcam - is the microphone still there?
    4. Is the 1366x768 panel nice, or does it appear like the crappy panels that you see in low-end machines?
    5. Keyboard still nice to type on? Still feels some-what mechanical?
Thank you everyone for putting up with my nOObie questions, I really just want to make sure that this is what I want when buying a machine. I honestly would just go to a computer shop and check them out- but there are very few that sell ThinkPads locally.

    1. It should occupy the 2.5" bay. The T440p has an NGFF M.2 slot rather than a conventional mSATA slot.
    2. The 6-cell is about 56Wh, whereas the 9-cell is about 100Wh, so you're getting a fair amount more capacity.
    3. Microphone should be there regardless of webcam.
    4. Chances are it's mediocre.
    5. You're only bet here is to try out a new keyboard in person. Further, keyboards will vary between machines even of the same model due to Lenovo sourcing different suppliers of keyboards.

    What's a good solid-state drive for my Pro 1.1, c.250-500gb?

I only in the last months learned about the XP941 as an option, and for all Mac Pro models.
And that was in the middle of a long thread that led me to look further.

So the adapter is cheap $24-52 versus say Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD ($295) which is not even bootable in 2006/7.
No need for $15 Icy Dock. Does not take up drive bay or any of the 6 SATA II ports.
Yes up until last fall/winter the 840 EVO was fine, I have half a dozen ranging from 128GB up to 500GB and they work fine.
In the past I ended up using the Sonnet card just for data (graphic library for Adobe and iPhoto) and not the system.
Options are always good to have.

  • Boot from PCIe SSD on Mac Pro 3,1

    Hi guys,
    I bought a Early 2008 Mac Pro.
I'm thinking about disk upgrade, to improve its performance. First i thought about Apricorn velocity x2 with a SSD mounted on it.
    Then i saw this
    Cavalry PCIe MLC SSD (256GB)

Is this pcie ssd supported by the motherboard?
Could i also boot from this?
    Thank you

I have not seen LSI mentioned and would avoid that one

Booting is low on priority to me, even a good SSD on native SATA II drive bay bus will help immensely.
PCIe is helpful when it comes to data, scratch, graphic libraries.

  • ThinkPad X201 vs new model X series??

    Hi,
could you please give me your opinion.
if you buy new thinkpad, would you go for X201 or new model X series? almost same price.
as i am classic ThinkPad fanatic i love x201 but price is high considering it is old model.
    what would be your idea?
    thanks

Depends what you're looking for in a laptop.
    Screen:
    X201 has a 16:10 screen. X220 and later have 16:9 screens.
X201 can retrofit a ddecent AFFS screen. X220 and later have an okay IPS screen from factory.
    Performance:
X201 through X230 have decently clocked full power CPUs. X240 has a bit weaker but still okay CPU. Everything afterwards is low-power.
X201 to X220 also significantly increased integrated GPU performance. X220 to X230 to X240 are modest increases.
    Storage:
X201 can only take a primary drive. X220 and later can take a primary plus mSATA/NGFF SSD.
    Wifi Card:
X201 and X220 can have the BIOS whitelist removed for wifi cards. X230 and later cannot.
    Battery Life:
X201 to X220 is the biggest jump in battery life. X220 to X230 to X240 are relatively minor increases. X220 and later can take a battery slice too.
    Keyboard:
X201 and X220 have classic keyboards. X230 and later have chiclet keyboards.

  • Help with a tough decision Apple is forcing me to make.

    Hi everyone,
So, like many of you, I have been patiently waiting for about five months now for a Mac Pro refresh. With the newer cpu's, gpu's, and hds out now, I was expecting to have seen them update it by now, but they haven't. They also refuse to announce anything about when they might, in a greedy attempt to get people to pay top dollar for old stock. I need to get a new system for 4k video editing now. When it was first released I was impressed by the value. Building a comparable system cost about the same. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore, and since they haven't upgraded the system, or lowered their prices to compete, I feel like I need to abandon the dream and look else where.  Anybody disagree? Is there any reason why the Mac Pro still can compete at a $5,000 price point? If not, any recommendations on what I should get?

It is easy to start with as 4,1 $495 and have 4k and even 5k.

Apple is not interested in Nvidia the way customers are. A Classic Mac Pro instead of trashy 6,1 design is still holding its own and doing better, with affordable 6-core 3.4GHz processors and other add-ons, even dual GPUs (AMD and Nvidia, with help of add'l PSU)

The bottleneck has been with spinning disk drives. Some users have tried using 2 x PCIe SSD controllers using four  SSDs to try to create large fast SSD arrays of 2-4TB and 1200-1800MB/sec.

    - Which basically is using Apple and Samsung PCIe-SSD devices to get 1200MB/sec out of a single device (256GB to 1TB) without controllers, just a PCIe adapter. Funny but even a 2006 1,1 have had this ability in firmware and logicboard all along since 2005 to support these small M.2 form factor devices.
Right now ebay for Apple 500-768-1000GB or an XP941 retail $400-750 (a small 256GB + adapter for $285 900MB/sec to give  you a taste).

  • Install M.2 SSD to Thinkpad Yoga

I have a new ThinkPad Yoga w/ 16 GB M.2 and 500GB HD and I want to replace the small M.2 drive with boot ssd and use 500GB for storage.  I did this on my X220 and seemed pretty straightforward.  Nervous about new machine, warning about using screws only once, and would like tutorial/list of how to do.  Will I invalidate my warranty if I do this myself?  if not how expensive ot have authorized tech do it?  Have Service Manual.  Is there a link to Service video?  Any other tips/Hints? Thanks

I purchased a Yoga S1 with 256GB SSD and a 128GB M.2 drive which I installed and transferred the OS from the SSD to the M.2 drive without any problems.
Before I installed and migrated I did the following:
    1. Full backup of SSD before any updates or software installs using Acronis
    2. Created Windows recovery USB
    3. Deleted recovery partition
    4. Updated all drivers and applications using Lenovo update
    5. Full back of SSD
Then I followed these guidlines http://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-Super-Cache-Solid-State/product-reviews/B00EZ2E8NO without removing my SSD.
There are plenty of links to Yoga S1 manuals for instructions on installing a M.2 drive.
My Yoga is runnng great, fast and responsive with plenty of storage.

  • L440- welche PCIe Norm?

    Hallo zusammen,
