Transcode .MTS AVCHD for use in PP CS3

Slightly odd question but here goes.
I have a number of .MTS AVCHD files I want to edit in PP CS3 on my work computer. The files are mainly 1920x1080 50i but one is 1440x1080 50i, all with A52 Audio (akaAC3)(a52): I didn't do the recording!
CS3 won't allow me to import in this format so I need to transcode the files, keeping maximum quality. Unfortunately I am a cash strapped student so can't afford to buy professional transcoding software. I can however install a trial PP CS 5.5 on my home computer and use that if it will work well, then move the video files back to work (my work computer only runs win XP. Vista or 7 are system requirements and prevent CS 5.5 install).
Essentially what is the best free way to transcode these files and what format should they go to? CS5.5 trial on my home computer or other freeware? I have searched around the forum and the web throughly but can't find many useful answers that don't contradict each other.
Cheers
Nick

Most converters will do a horrible job and convert to a format still difficult to edit.
Don't waist your money on AVCHD Upshift (as mentioned in John's link).
Best thing and i does not come free is Cineform.
It will give you visual lossless footage, easy to edit.
Download the trial.
If its a one time thing only convert all your footage in the trial periode.
After that you will only need the neoplayer from Cineform (download) to edit in Premiere. You cannot export to Cineform, but that should not be a problem.
There are plenty of other formats.
You do need to install the ac3 codec first (just coping the .dll to Premiere wont do it) otherwise you will not be able to convert the files with Cineform.

  • Converting mts files for use in fcp

i know this horse has already been turned into glue ...
in any case, i have a dvd's worth of mts files provided by a client. can't import them directly into fcp, so i need to run them through some sort of conversion. tried MPEG StreamClip and that doesn't work. Toast is too expensive. demoed VoltaicHD and didn't care for it. the two that worked the best are Moyea HD Video Converter and Pavtube MTS/M2TS Converter that were recommended. very simple interface, reasonable file sizes and much quicker than VoltaicHD. they go for $35 which i guess is reasonable. interestingly they seem like the same exact product just slightly different skins. anyone have any experience with either? one thing that i did find disconcerting is they use SWREG as their e-commerce provider who immediately tried to sell me keycode backup insurance. the whole operation seemed a bit shady to me. anyone have any problems with these guys?
if anyone has any other solutions to this mts conversion issue it'd be appreciated. thanks.

Hi,is your problem resolved? there is a good mts converter for mac of highly-regarded reputation from this forum and other popular camcorder forum.http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/showthread.php?p=251941

  • Do I need to transcode .MTS (AVCHD) files before editing?

I am quite new to all this, so forgive me if my question is unclear or just plain dumb.  I am shooting footage with a Panasonic GH2 which outputs clips as AVCHD. I understand that this is highly compressed.  I am perfectly able to edit these short clips (less than 1 min) in PP CS5 and export them as mp4 or .MOV files.  They seem to play back just fine in the Windows Media Player.  However, I am shooting footage destined for online stock companies and I am concerned that, without some form of decompression prior to editing, I will be degrading the footage too much. Is this the case? If so, what should I transcode to before importing to PP?  I am using Adobe Media Encoder as part of CS5 Production Premium.

You are mixing a few things up.
    CS5.5 can edit AVCHD natively.
What MPE can do for you read the link
    http://blogs.adobe.com/premiereprotraining/2011/02/cuda-mercury-playback-engine-and-adobe- premiere-pro.html
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
In another way, I guess it's not good news if I have to do any color/exposure correcting, etc inPrPro or After Effects, as I'll be degrading the footage further. Is that correct?
Yes, but a certified card wont change that.

  • Convert MTS files for use in Final Cut Express

Having just bought a Canon Legria HF R16 (which in America would be the Vixia) I was struggling the past hours to get my video files from the camera to my mac. Canon doesn't provide much help in this. But I finally got the files in iMovie. Is there a site somewhere where I can find more information about organizing those videos and how best to transfer them from camera with this setup?
So far the procedure seems to be: import in iMovie then import the mov files into Final Cut Express. But maybe there is a more efficient way.
    Thanks.

Yes, it's an AVCHD camcorder. Just tried the log & transfer and it imported in Final Cut Express alright. I checked the info about the imported video clips and it looks fine too, at least it says that it's Apple Intermediate Codec. So that would allow me to import my stuff into FCE directly without converting anything. Touch wood.
I am right now trying everything out on my camera, got it today. The size is 1440x1080 if I saw correctly in FCE. Have to check on that om my camcorder. Yes, I had it on SP (standard), changed that to FXP (full size).
I guess I'll manage from here on. Thanks, Martin.
The first moments can be so confusing.
So I guess there is no need to convert the movies in iMovie first, unless I wanted to use iMovie for editing.
I'm still studying the FCE manual as well.

  • What is the easiest way to convert .MTS files for use in Final Cut Express

I initially downloaded my Sony Alpha7 files into iMovie. As the production requires a little more professional software I then tried to import files into Final Cut Express. As these are now .MTS files what is the easiest way of converting them?

    Hey Martin et al,
    Related question...
After you convert files from M2TS or MP4 into something usable in FCE can you trash the original M2ts/mp4 files ?
I recently used Mpeg Streamclip to convert Mp4 into AIC for FCE for example..
Is there a general rule of when you have to save original files so everything works in FCE?
I'm running out of HD space.
    Thanks a lot,

  • Removing Printer Profiles for use in PS CS3

I'm setting up my work flow using PS to manage printing. I have lots of printer profiles accumulated over the years and would like to weed them out. How can I do that? Where are they located in the files? I'm using OS 10.5.2.
    Thanks.

They're generally located in your Library>ColorSync>Profiles folder, but some are also in the same folder under your User name. Because I make custom profiles for both myself and others, not only inkjets but at least twenty different printing houses and a couple of photo labs here in lo-cal, I have hundreds. What I do is make a new folder called Profiles Disabled and move all the unwanted profiles to that folder. I'm not getting rid of them permanently but getting them out of sight as far as Ps is concerned.

  • Converting AVCHD for use on Power PC G5

Hello. I work with FCP 6.0.6 on a Power PC based G5. We just bought a new videocamera. It is a Canon Vixia HFR10 and produces video in AVCHD format. I have learned the hard way that my mac will not accept that format. We were able to upload to a PC, convert it to a QuickTime file, move via jump drive, and then I can get the video into iMovie but not into FCP.
I really need to get it into FCP asap.
What is the best way to make this happen?
    Thank you in advance!!!!

My other camera is HD - it's a Canon HV20. I looked at the ClipWrap2 software after asking you earlier and found that LT isn't even an option (it's grayed out). There are, however, some other options. They are: Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes HQ, DV, and DVCProHD. What are your thoughts?
p.s. My sister in law just got a Mac - I told her to use the discussion board first - you guys are consistently helpful (more so than I have found cust service to be)! Thank you!!

  • What is the best file converter for Panasonic HC-X900M camcorder        for use on Final Cut Pro X?

What is the best file converter for Panasonic HC-X900M Camcorder Mts  files for use with Final Cut Pro?

This camcorder records in several ways, including AVCHD2, mpeg4 iframe, and 3d, at least that seems to be the case from a quick reading of its specs.
If you get the latest update for fcpx, it will handle video shot in 60P. That is 10.0.4
Here is what Apple says it supports, and one version of the 900 seems to be supported.
I think the Apple site is a little behind its own software update, as one advantage of the new update is that it handles 60P.
Maybe I am missing something, but I wonder what would happen if you get the latest update for fcpx, and try your card again. I did find that fcpx now supports my sony dslr at 60P.
Here is a thread with one person saying they can now use their 900.

  • Photoshop Elements Organizer 11 crashes due to deadlock in the thread wait chain when creating thumbnails for *.mts (AVCHD) files

    Hi,
the Elements Organizer 11 creates a deadlock in the wait chain when generating thumbnails for more than a handful of MTS (AVCHD) files.
After importing AVCHD files from my Canon video camera, the organizer using default settings always crashes. I was able to narrow down the problem to be caused by thumbnail generating.
After deactivating the automatic generation of thumbnails, the organizer does not crash any more upon launching .
Of course, working without thumbnails is not very practical. The next resort is manual trigger of thumbnail generation by selecting "update thumbnail".
If I manually trigger updating of thumbnails for files one by one, then it works for quite many files before crashing again.
Selecting thumbnail update for multiple files at once has a much higher likelihood to crash.
This does not seem to be related to particular file contents: a file that leads to crashing once may be flawlessly get a thumbnail created at the next attempt.
The Windows event report looks as follows (German language Windows):
Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe, Version: 11.0.0.0, Zeitstempel: 0x505e9f67
Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: msvcrt.dll, Version: 7.0.9600.16384, Zeitstempel: 0x52158ff5

Occasionally, a different module is listed as erroneous instead of msvcrt.dll.
    My questions:
    - has anyone experienced the same problem?
    - is this a known issue with Organizer 11?
    - is the issue solved with Organizer 12?
I have Premiere Elements 11, Photoshop Elements 11 installed and not experienced any other issues with these applications.
Playback of said AVCHD (*.mts) files works flawlessly, i.e. I do not have any codec or performance issue on my PC.
Deactivation of anti-virus software has no significant effect. I have excluded video directories from scanning anyways.
Have deactivated face recognition, visual search and smart tagging in the organizer.
Have also disabled hyperthreading in the BIOS.
Using Windows XP compatibility settings for PSE somewhat improved the stability, but did not completely eliminate crashes.
Additionally, it signnificantly slows down thumbnail generation and a progress indication window becomes visible during thumbnail generation, which is barely noticable in native Win 8.1 mode.
Officially, Elements 11 is compatible with Windows 8.1.
There is a knowledgebase article related to Elements 6, which recommends to disable multi-threading and to enforce execution of Organizer on more than one core.
This reduces the problem a little bit, but thumbnailing more than a handful of files still leads to crashing.
By means of the task manager, I analyzed the wait chain of the process PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe:
Every time the fault occurs, it is caused by a deadlock in the wait chain.
    For example:
    PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe (PID:6440) Thread: 6540
    -- PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe (PID:6440) Thread: 5932
    ---- PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe (PID:6440) Thread: 6540

  • Premiere Pro CC, Dolby Digital License missing for MTS / AVCHD audio import?

    Hi,
I'm running Premiere Pro CC on Mac 10.8.4 importing MTS files captured on a new Panasonic V720 Camcorder that records MTS / AVCHD files.
When I add the files to my project or drop them onto the timeline, the video appears fine but there's no audio and I get the warning message:
"This installation does not have a license to decode Dolby Digital audio".
I've tried switching from 5.1 to 2-channel audio on the camera in case that was the issue, no change.
The file plays fine on the mac with VLC player or MPlayer - mplayer is decoding audio with the FFmpeg AC-3 codec. I've imported MTS files created with other cameras (but presumably with different audio codecs) into Premiere fine with my current setup.
Any suggestions for getting this video and audio to work correctly?
    Thanks!

Hey guys, thanks for the responses.  I have checked my audio preference settings and don't really see anything in there that looks helpful...the following are my settings:
The LG TV is actually hooked up through a 7.1 receiver...I'm not sure why it registers the home theater unit as the tv....but 5.1 does play through my PC just fine with every other program.
I've been playng around with the various export settings and have found that I can successfully export 5.1 audio using the H.264 preset and switching the channels in the audio tab to 5.1.  You cannot, however, do the same with the H.264 Blu-ray preset as it requires the above mentioned SurCode for compression.  I'm guessing that means the non-Blu-ray preset is then uncompressed?
The projects that I'm setting up are very basic.  I'm just using a single mp3 import and snapping it to one of the rear speakers.  While editing, the sound does fade from the front channels but nothing comes out of the rear channels.
I guess I'm just having a hard time understanding why PPCC can export 5.1 but not play it back while editing....
    Thanks again for the responses

  • CS3 Extended or CS3  for use with LR?

CS3 Extended refers to an interface to Lightroom; however, I've found I can use CS3 to edit and save back to Lighroom. If all I'm doing is using plugins in CS3 to do noise reduction and sharpening, and CS3 to print, why would I need Extended?

Photoshop CS3 Extended is not intended for still Photography. It would be better used in motion Photography (the Movie Industry). PSCS3 Extended can be used for creative work to compliment Adobe After Effects which does for motion Photography what Photoshop does for still Photography.

  • What's hardware should upgrade for Using Premiere CS4 to editing (AVCHD)m2ts file?

What's hardware or software should upgrade for Using Premiere CS4 to editing (AVCHD)m2ts file?
1st question: when i try to do editing by using Premiere CS4 AVCHD sequence timeline, the edting monitor seems not smooth (like wearing goggles) & delay, and when i use AME to encode m2ts file (which not yet edit) to AVI file (about 1 hour), it take 2h 13min to finish, is it normal?
2nd question: i use mpeg2 HD 1440 file to do eding, the edting monitor also not very smooth but better than using m2ts file, after editing done, i try to encode these mpeg2 HD 1440 file (which edited about long 1 hr) to a New file mpeg2 1440 X 1080i HQ or even mpeg2 Pal DV HQ file, the encoding was not runthe encoding after wait for half an hour. How many hours it take usually????
3rd question: i use m2ts file video file to export as a Bitmap, 1 frame 1 picture bitmap, it take long time too, about 1 or 2min to finish encoding, if i export more than 1 picture, it take even more time, i have experienced it, 3 or 4 pictures need about 10 or 15 min to finish encoding. i used to using mpeg2 HD 1440 file (which edited file) to export frame as picture, it not run the encoding at all. WHY ????
i'm new in Premiere CS4,so i got many question about Premiere CS4, usually i use Premiere Pro 1.5 version
my computer is: Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU
                             E7400 @ 2.80 GHz

Graphic Card: ATI Radeon X1650 series
2 Hard Disks in my computer (C Drive is 300 GB (not sata) , D Drive is 500 GB sata)
    4th Question: Premiere CS5 & Premiere CS4 which one is better ???
5th Question: What's different ATI Radeon and NVIDIA Card, which is better, which u suggest to. What is different Graphic Card and Video Card ?? Should i install HD Video Card ????

I don't think a core-2 will work very well with AVCHD... you need at least an Intel i7 920... or whatever is current
My CS5/AVCHD 1st Impressions http://forums.adobe.com/thread/652694?tstart=0 includes a link to the computer I built... since the GTX 285 is no longer sold, I would now go with a GTX 460 or whatever is the current "best bang for the buck" - AND I would buy 4Gig-by-3Sticks memory to be able to expand from 12Gig to 24Gig if needed
For my home hobbyist, family movies (which means that I am not trying to recreate Star Wars with video effects or many layers) AVCHD editing is "as smooth as spreading warm butter on hot toast" (also the MP4 video from wife's Flip camera)
My 3 hard drives are configured as...
    1 - 320G WD Win7 and all programs
2 - 320G WD Win7 swap file and PPro projects
3 - 1T WD all video files... read and write

  • Is there free software I can use to convert mts videos for Mac

My son gave  me three movies he took on a Canon Vixia that are in mts format. I can only open them in VLC, but I want to put them online and usually use Quicktime to make the files smaller for the web. These files won't open in Quictime or in iPhoto or iMovie or iTunes. I don't want to buy software, because I just need it for these particular movies - I downloaded two kinds of software that worked fine but put a large company logo on the upper left of the movie after it was converted if one wanted to use it free. Can anyone recommend a way that I can make these files compatible so I can upload them to the web?
Alternatively, is there a reliable, inexpensive bit of software I could download so I can process these films?  I'm not averse to paying, but will only use this software once, probably.  Thanks for your help.

    Hi Barbara,
Not aware of a free converter, but there are free players...
    http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoconvert/mts-converter-for-mac.html
    And a trial converter there.

  • Back-saving Adobe CC / CS6 InDesign files for use in Adobe InDesign CS3?

I am currently running Adobe CS3 on a Macintosh computer / OS. Is it possible to back-save Adobe CC / CS6 InDesign files for use in Adobe InDesign CS3?

@kc.k – You will need InDesign CS4 for that.
CS4 is the only version, that can export/import both IDML and INX exchange formats.
And you need an exported INX file (from InDesign CS4) that can open your exported IDML file from CS6, CC or CC-2014.
Since you are still running CS3 I'd suggest you downloading a 30days version of CS4 and do the conversion:
Download Adobe CS4 and CS3 Free Trials Here (incl. After Effects) | ProDesignTools
Read the Note about downloading very well before trying !!
