Transcode to HDV error

In trying to export a half hr show in HDV the transcode step always gets about 3-6 minutes in and crashes. Have disabled anti virus/screen savers/dual monitors etc. Reinstalled system clean and software no luck. Project is on external Seagate drive via sata cable 7200rpm. In the error report I always see ModName: fx-prodad-vitascene.prm I was suspecting third party Vitascene plug-in in for CS3 which I use for a few transitions but all updates, including directX are current. Working with HDV mpeg-2 files.
My System:
Shuttle pc intel core2 duo
WinXP pro SP3
2G RAM
(1) 500G Internal 7200
NVidia GForce 9600GT
CS3 Production Bundle
All Software Updates Current

You have obviously used the ProDAD Vitascene on part of your Timeline. I've heard of very few problems with it, you you might want to do a test without that Effect, just to see what is going on. I use Vitascene a bit, and have had zero issues, but then I am applying it to SD material.
Though it sounds like you have shut down many of the "usual suspects," this ARTICLE might give you a useful tip - or you may already have done everything in it.
Good luck, and let us know how the non-Vitascene version works.

  • Batch capture HDV error

I have FCP 5.14 and have just logged a bunch of HDV footage offline. I did this the normal way I would when capturing DV footage, marking the in and out point and then log the clip, standard stuff?
When I try to Batch capture the offline clips it captures only 1 frame from each clip, then the clip details are also effected, ie the Media start and media end of my clips changes from what they where into two new time codes 1 frame either side of the newly captured clip.
Is this a program error or am I just completely useless??? Can somebody help me please

Not sure if this is your exact problem, but I've had issues with Batch Capturing HDV in FCP 5.1.4 using both a Sony M15U and M25U.
The deck would seek to the appropriate place on the tape and then just jog back and forth looking for the right start point. It would do this about 3 times and then give up.
The solution for this was a DROP FRAME / NON-DROP FRAME setting in FCP. If you go to your A/V Settings and then to the Device Control Presets tab and edit your preset (If it's locked you can just make a copy of it and edit the copy - I am using the Sony HDV firewire preset). If you know what your footage was shot in (drop or non) make this setting adjustment. If you don't know, try both.
As soon as this not so little detail was checked everything batch captured without fail. Just make sure there aren't any timecode breaks on your tape.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
Encore is good solution to transcode a HDV 108060i sequence to make a SD PAL DVD? Without desincronise with the sounds of the movie (which appends with Final Cut Pro Plugins)?
    Thanks

  • HDV transcode to DV

I am trying to get setup for editing HDV. I will need to capture HDV onto my Mac and transcode it into a DV NTSC movie and an DVDPRO HD movie for editing in Final Cut Pro 5. Does Lumiere HD do a better job of this than FCP5 and Compressor? Is Compressor good enough for the task? How about the product HDVxDV?
When you transcode from HDV to DV does it just crops off the edges?
    G5 Dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I would edit the HDV in FCP 5 native and skip Lumiere and HDVxDV all together. Both of those programs are great if you cannot edit HDV natively. Once you are done with the cut in FCP 5 export the HDV to a DV quicktime file.

  • Long HDV and XDCAM clips through Final Cut Server

    Hi,
I know that I could post this in Compressor and/or Quicktime and/or Leopard/Tiger Forums, but as this problem it`s causing my Final Cut Server to not working well, I think it makes sense to post here.
To resume: HDV and XDCAM clips (all on original codec, only xdcam transferred to mov in xdcam transfer) with file size bigger than exactly 4GB always FAILS in "Final Cut Server"/"Compressor alone in ANY machine installed from scratch"/"Anything that uses Quicktime". Source and Destination being localy or networked. DV or DV50 can get bigger than that, I`ve never seen this error with DV`s codecs.
I had seen this problem before I bought final cut server. When I was transcoding our interviews for transcription. We always worked with BETA SP and captured in DV or DV50. We were starting to go to HDV and now to XDCAM and this error has started to appear.
I have a "proxy" made a year ago from a HDV and it`s original has 8GB. I tried this file again and as I expected didn`t work. In ANY computer with any installations with only the latest updates. I`ve remembered that I was using Tiger at this time, and Quicktime/Tiger/ProApps had a old version.
My two cents are that some update from Tiger/Leopard/QuickTime/ProApps made this happen.
So ANY HDV/XDCAM file bigger than 4GB it`s FAILING in ANY system. (Tiger or Leopard, With or without FCP and QT PRO, Installed from scratch and updated every thing).
    Some tests I`ve made:
-Compressor works with this two codecs to lower res in TIGER and with QuickTime Version 7.4.0 and LOWER. (had to be tested, but I think that was my version of QT when I managed to make the proxy of this two codecs).
-Compressor doesn`t work on any system with QT above 7.4.0.
-CATDV (http://www.squarebox.co.uk/) version 6 can make proxy versions of this two codecs in TIGER ONLY! They already know of this problem and CATDV 7 works on both.
-Compressing in compressor with H.264 (same codec as the FCSvr proxy) BUT without changing the resolution, size and etc. Works OK in both Tiger and Leopard.
-Exporting through QT works in ANY system BUT I loose TC, so it`s not an option (and I can`t input this workflow in FCSvr without using compressor).
-Exporting from FCP as QuickTime Movie with H.264 doesn`t work on Both (Tiger and Leopard).
-Exporting fro FCP as QuickTime Conversion with H.264 works but as exporting from QT I loose TC and can`t input this into FCSvr workflow.
Error message are always: "QuickTime error = -50" or "QuickTime error: corrupted data" (and of course it`s not corrupted because it`s used - even in FCP to edit - and opened viewed, catdv can do proxy and everything).
I`m surprised not to see anyone freaking out about this issue... I don`t think that It`s only me.
This is some problems that I came across while trying to find a solution:

    Hi Chará!
We should, but I think the others will be disappointed eheheheh.
It doesn`t matter what version of Leopard I`m using (right know I`m using Leopard Server 10.5.6, but this issue has happened even with 10.4 if QT is updated and all updates of 10.5 up, as I`
    ve mentioned above).
What file size are those clips that are longer than 10min?
I really don`t get, how it`s possible that just the two of us has HDV and XDCAM files with file size longer than usual? Maybe people that do interviews don`t like to record the entire interview and when capturing those clips would be under this file size limit? Or maybe we are the only ones in the whole world that transcode longer HDV and XDCAM clips (it`s funny that it doesn`t even need to be FCSrv, with only ONE machine and compressor this issue happens all the time).
I`m convinced that I have to install a Tiger version in a virtual machine with compressor and doesn`t update anything to test this further on. But I`m certain that with TIGER and CATDV this works ok! And I think that CATDV uses QT engine to do this transcodes.
This is too much of a mystery to me. Maybe it`s time to spend 24+ hours with apple in a international call and probably not getting anywhere.
I`m only posting this here in FCSrv forum because this issue it`s must worse when you have hundreds of clips with this issue and if you bought the package it doen`t matter if it`s a problem with QT+OSX or whatever, apple has to solve it for FCSrv use.
    Do you reckon?

  • Print To Video HDV dropping out

When I try to print to video from the computer to a Sony HDV 1080i deck it goes and conforms all the video then I start the process and it works fine until a certain spot and will go to black then back on again etc.
I've tried this a few times and at the same spot will get the problem so I checked to make sure it wasn't the tape, I threw away the rendered files and re-rendered them again. I even saved the project to a quicktime movie which played back looks fine. I tried to use the quicktime file and it stops at the same place everytime.
    Any suggestions?
I even went and rendered all of my sequences, mixed down the audio etc.
    thanks in advance!
Just recently went from FCP 5.1.2 to 5.1.4 I did another project last week and the print to video worked out fine I was wondering if this was a bug in 5.1.4?
    Using FCP 5.1.4

conforming and decoding the mpeg2 HDV stream seems to be the hardest thing for the computer to do. Enough RAM, and a beefy video card will help. I think it's a miracle every time I can get a batch of HDV clips to sucessfully capture. Cutting doesn't go too bad, but I have found outputting native HDV to be nearly impossible.
We had about 3 hours worth of 10-15 minute segments to output, and it took close to 3 weeks of constant effort, outputting one sequence at a time. It would black out, stop playing back, freeze up, put all kind of breaks in the timecode even if you pre-stripe the tape. And all the while it would never, ever alert or abort on dropped frames, timcode breaks, etc.
One of the big problems was rendered material. I used a page peel transition (I know, I know, it was a video cookbook, gimme a break) in the HDV segments. I took the time to set up each one with an image for the "back" of the page from the context of the segment. Rendered playback from the timeline looked fine, but as soon as I went to tape, the background of each peel would display whatever image I had most recently applied - all of them - but only on output. I wound up having to replace the backgound of each one one at a time, export each transition as a self-contained movie, bring it back in as clips and re-sync it with the surrounding media. Luckily there were only about 150 of them to do. All this I started doing after the first solid week of failed output attempts. Even then, any rendered material in my sequences would trigger the dreaded dropouts, freeze frames, skips, and substituted rendered material. So after another couple days of attempts, I wound up exporting self-contained movies of every minute of my output, re-editing them back into sequences, and so finally I was able to output to tape in 10-minute chunks, and it only took 5 or 10 tries for each one. The only reason I really needed to go to tape in the first place was because I found impossible to transcode the HDV to SD mpeg for DVD without field artifacts, and abysmally unacceptible quality. So I recaptured the HDV as DV using the deck's downconvert, which seemed to be the only thing it could do well.
I believe that a faster computer with more RAM and a better video card would have made a big difference. Newer versions of FCP have probably solved a lot of the issues I had with the rendered material. Even so, there are aspects of the long-GOP, mpeg-2 stream aspects of HDV and the way that it negatively affects timecode, deck control, and capture and output, that make the format my last choice for professional editing.
For your situation, I'd recommend exporting a self-contained movie, maybe even try AIC, although it'll have to reconform back down to HDV for FW HDV output. Try all your various Mac voodoo steps before starting output - trash prefs, repair permissions, power-cycle everything. You can borrow my feathered headdress and tortoise-shell rattle if you want.
Sorry I couldn't provide a more definitive answer for you...

  • Print to Video HDV

Hello All. So about 6 mos ago I successfully printed video back to my XHA1, since then I haven't been able to connect my XHA1 to FCP at all. I have no problem getting the HV20 to mount. I have tried pretty much every possible set-up and still no luck with the A1. I am trying to print to video and can get neither camera to operate correctly. I have searched the boards and nothing seems to work. LIke I said I have tried so many different configurations w/o success. Does anyone have a tried and true way to print HDV 24F footage back to either a Canon A1 or HV20. Your help would be very appreciated. Thank you.
    Jeremy

Well I stumbled on the answer to my problem, maybe someone else might learn from my mistake. When creating my storyline, I created the sequence with DV settings. All the resulting work was then in DV and it apparently will not convert to HDV without significant loss. My solution was to Easy Setup with HD and AIC 1080i60 then create the new sequence. I imported all my clips into the new sequence timeline. When I go to print to file now, the camera automatically starts to record with transcoding to HDV appearing while the video is copying back to the Tape. Just a newbie mistake but maybe someone else wont make the same mistake.

  • Another Data Rate Too High Error Question

    Hi all,
I have seen quite a few posts about pgc errors, but most of them deal with slideshows and not video; and I can't find anything with the REF=KApgc error.
I'm just putting all of my home movies onto an authored DVD, not rocket science.  I'm using the 'Film Submenu' preset with only 5 main movies, things like Easter, Birthday, etc.  My transition for each button is a slate (for lack of a better word) that says exactly what it is and when it happened, before each movie plays.
After I had everything set up, I realized I didn't have an ability to "play all" that would include these slates.  Simple solution, make a 'play all' button that links to a timeline that has everything in it - the slate, then the movie, next slate, next movie and so on.  (When I say movie - they are all .mov files rendered out from After Effects, even the slates)
My transcode settings are NTSC DV High Quality 7mb VBR 2 Pass and the "maximum quality" box is checked.
When I run the 'Check Disc' all is fine.  Preview the disc, all is fine.
Build Disc: Hours of Transcoding then the error: Data Rate Too High at *timecode* REF=KApgc.
When this movie is by itself with a button click, it's fine.  It's only in the "play all" timeline that it produces the error.
If the data rate isn't too high in one place, why is it too high in another?  It's the same thing, just a longer timeline.
    Please Help!
    Thanks.

    Thanks Jeff,
I feel kind of silly for not thinking of that as a solution to my play all dilemma.  That's why you're the expert I guess.
A better solution would be to create a playlist of all of your other timelines; that way, only one copy of each gets burned to disc.
Hopefully the "data rate" error will go away with these changes.
    -Jeff
Can I place my slates that are just assets (.mov) in the playlist or can I only put timelines in there?
    Thanks again,
    -Jim

  • Annoying Desktop Software system error

Hope someone can help me. I am running Desktop Software 7.1.0.41 and Windows 7. Everytime I open the program, I get a dialog box that won't go away. I close it and it pops right back again and again. Here's what it says:
"Rim.Transcoder.exe - System Error. The program can't start because CoreMultiMedia.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
Admittedly, I have no clue what this supposedly missing file does. But I do know that it definitely IS NOT "missing from (my) computer." It is alive and well at c:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Snapfire Plus\CoreMultimedia.dll. When I right-click this file for Properties, I see that it hasn't been modified since its creation date of 8/4/06 and hasn't been accessed since 4/26/07.
What gives? How do I solve this? Thanks in advance.

  • Settings for audio HDV 24p 16:9

    Hi,
I have some very serious audio issues. Someone told me, maybe it happened because of the way I captured the audio (I don't know) into FCP. Maybe...
The footage was shot with an HV20 in HDV 24p 16:9. The sound clip in Format states:
    Aud rate 48.0 KHz
    Aud format 16-bit integer
Data rate 3.6 MB / sec
    Should it be that way????

Digital audio for video is 48 kHz, 16 Bit.
There are other settings, but let's not complicate the issue -this setting is correct for you.
So, what are your audio issues and how did you capture?
Did you transcode the HDV to Apple Intermediate or ProRes codec?
What is your Easy Setup and Timeline Sequence Settings?

  • Transcoded files not importing properly.

I'm new to Premiere (coming from FCPX) and I've been trying to import a video file for the last few hours. I can't seem to swing it.
    1. The file(s) in question are 720p 422 AppleProRes .mov files, 8track audio sampling at 48k, transcoded from r3d files (in red cine-x if it matters).
    2. The files play fine as stand-alones, in my Quicktime Player.
    3. They also import and play fine in FCPX.
    4. I am able to import audio songs and other finished movies into Premiere Pro. They all play fine.
    5. When I attempt to import my transcoded files, the picture seems to import fine, but the audio is this horrid maxed-out static noise on all channels.
    6. In other transcoded video, instead of the audio maxed out, there's missing audio channels, and the channels that do exist are extremely loud and heavily distorted.
    7. I tried re-transcoding into HDV, but I get the same audio distortion when I import to Premiere.
    8. I have tried playing with different Sequence settings, and I have also tried matching the Sequence to the clip in question.
    9. I tried importing my raw r3d files, but Premiere does not allow them to import. Since I've read that Premiere is able to read r3d, I am reinstalling my copy of Premiere.

Hey Ronin, thanks for your reply! The audio codec is Linear PCM.
The audio codec options I have, from redcine-x, are:
    Linear PCM
    AAC
    Apple AES3 Audio
    Apple Lossless
    MPEG-4 AAC Enhanced Low Delay
MPEG-4 AAC Enhanced Low Delay with SBR
    MPEG-4 AAC Low Delay
    MPEG-4 HE AAC
    MPEG-4 HE AAC V2
Would one of them be better?

  • Encore CS6 isn't transcoding finished videos

Adobe Encore CS6, Intel Xeon CPU Dual Core @ 2.66 GHz, 12 GB RAM, Windows 7
I've encountered a strange problem this week. If I try to create a DVD folder using a .WMV file, I get an error saying "error setting up transcoder." This error repeated itself even when I changed my DVD transcode settings. These are videos I created using Premiere Pro CS6 on this same computer. However, if I use Dynamic Link to send the project directly from Premiere Pro to Encore, I have no problems. Fortunately, to this point I have only had to create DVDs of video projects I've edited on my computer, but in the future I will have to create DVDs from .WMV files that I haven't produced. This is a new issue that I've only encountered this week; for the past few months I haven't had an issue creating DVD folders with .WMV video files. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this?

    Odd.
WMV is a supported filetype. Not an optimal choice, but, as it has for you in the past, should work.
It is tempting to look at transcode settings or the settings you used to export it from PR. But the more likely scenario is that something changed on your machine in terms of codecs or other settings.
You mention building to a folder,  but I assume the problem has nothing to do with a build. When do you get the error? Upon import of the asset? Or trying to transcode it? I assume it is not when you open the project.

  • HDV, ProRes, Fundementals

Hello everyone. Trying to wrap my head around the whole HDV/ProRes workflow.
So the other day I shot some HDV on a borrowed Sony HDR-FX1000.
I know I could have/should have brought in as Pro Res, but just did my capture in HDV - to see what it looked like. (file sizes etc)
I did a rough edit, and for many of the projects I do, I have out output .wmv's for clients to approve using EXPORT in FCP.
I was a little surprised that the .wmv files (even at the highest quality settings) didn't look all that great. At least, not as good as I expected.
So I thought (maybe a Pro Res transcode is the solution!) So I went ahead and used Compressor to transcode the HDV files to Pro Res. The first thing that had me wondering... is that I thought Pro Res was supposed to REDUCE file size. I found that the Pro Res files were actually 4 times as large.
I really can't see any difference in quality - and I know that is not necessarily the reason for using Pro Res, but just wondering what I am missing in the equation.
Sorry if the question is to vague. But any insights would be helpful.
    Thanks!

... I thought Pro Res was supposed to REDUCE file size. I found that the Pro Res files were actually 4 times as large.
You are correct. ProRes is intended to create much smaller sizes than you would get if you used *+uncompressed 8 or 10 bit codecs+* .
Standard compressed codecs like HDV, AVCHD, H.264 all use clever intra frame compression schemes (Groups of pictures - aka GOP) to push data rates very low. These codecs are intended as transportable formats (delivery) -not to edit.
To edit one of them, you need to transform them from a group of picture format where there is only one complete frame every 15 or so frames and the others contain only the differences between this frame and previous (or next) ones to an all independent "I" frame format.
It is this creation of new full frames that makes the files so much larger.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Re-populating a sequence with transcoded clips

I have made a sequence using the pluraleyes plugin and multiclip. This was done using the original HDV footage of 5 camera angles because my system will not cope with 5 streams of 422. I would now like to transcode the relevant clips to 422 to make the final sequence to output using compressor. Is there a way to repopulate the the original HDV sequence with the transcoded clips to avoid having to reconstruct the sequence from EDL data? I am using FCP 6.0.6
    cheers

Duplicate your sequence and then switch the Sequence Settings >> QuickTime Video Settings >> Compressor to Apple ProRes 422, then Export > Quicktime Movie w/Current Settings ... you have nothing to gain from transcoding your HDV clips into ProRes just to put them back into your timeline now its already cut.
That said, if you are desperate to do this, then you can use the *Media Manager* tool's Recompress option to create a new Apple ProRes 422 copy of your sequence.
    Cheers
    Andy

  • HDV Rendering

I have a sequence that I have verified all clip setting are same as track settings for video and audio.
I have added some color correction and speed change to the clip.
When I render video on it the window poping up says "Conforming HDV Video" which seems strange.
    It is HDV already:
Z7U footage filmed at 1080i 24P on Tape.

    Iain Anderson wrote:
Capturing direct to ProRes requires a Mac Pro and increases (3x) your data rate and storage requirements for no gain.
    Umm...
Yes is is definitely a benefit of transcoding your HDV media to pro res before editing. As mentioned earlier the gain is better realtime performance for the reasons originally stated. If you make a change to any of the edits after the first render then you would have to re-render the clips to re-conform them to render files for realtime playback. With pro res you would not have to even render most of the edits in the first place.
Pro Res does not actually require a Mac Pro. Only if you're capturing to HD resolution video is it suggested that you need a Mac Pro. Other Mac systems may drop frames when capturing High Definition video in the ProRes 422 format.
And now the thread seems to be getting cluttered with OP which has a Mac Pro/FCS2, dr.dimento which has a Mac Pro with FCS3, and iMac guy that has an iMac with FCS2. So there's conflicting recommendations. For OP I recommend that they transcode to pro res before editing and dimento already knows about the benefits of creating a striped RAID for these reasons. iMac guy should get a Mac Pro, RAID and dedicated capture card if they want to edit HDV in realtime. If not be prepared for lots of rendering (and the large render files that accompany it).
