Transfer a shared file from windows to mac

I need to get a file over to my MacBook that's on my Windows machine. I did it a while ago using sftp but I can't remember how I did it. The computer shows up under the Shared sidebar as family but then it asks me for a user name and password. What user name and password do they mean? I have no account passwords on the windows machine and it won't let me go in as a guest. Could anyone help me fix this.

You need to setup a shared folder on the windows machine with guest privileges. You can put that file in the shared folder and access it without a password from your Mac.

if you’re talking about a USB drive, then it will probably have an exFAT filesystem. Modern versions of OS X can read from and write to exFAT filesystems without problems, so you would be able to move Windows folders, subfolders, and files from an exFAT filesystem to an OS X filesystem.

Very new to the MAC!!! I just loaded Elements 6 for the MAC on my new Macbook Pro. I had
about 500 photos that I transferred from my old PC via USB drive to the Mac to Iphoto. They were shot RAW+JPEG. When I open them, it appears in Iphoto that I really have 2 jpegs - on my old PC I have two files per photo - A blue PSE and a Jpeg. What transferred to Iphoto is 2 JPEGS that are basically the same size as their Windows counterparts - 9 MB and 2 MB, respectively. They both have JPEG extensions and when I open the large one in PSE6, i get the regular PSE6 menu - not the RAW options for adjusting WB, temperature, histograph, tint, exposure, etc!!! Am I a complete Moron???? I think so!!! I was expecting to have this all work like my PC? Basically - what is going on, where are my raw files and converter and what do I need to do to work on raw files on the MAC?????? Thanks and I am really enjoying this computer. But getting the cross platform transfer from Adobe was a ***** (10-12 calls over 10 days - and cost $28! Thanks for any help

I knew you would come to the rescue, Barbara!!! And you are right! I do have CR2 files on the PC and I drag/drop them to the USB drive - where they stay CR2. It is in the importing to IPhoto that IPhoto turns them into JPEG (I notice when the CR2 file goes over, for a millisecond - the resolution of the thumbnail gets a little less sharp - so I guess that is what is happening). At any rate, when I just connected the USB drive and dragged the CR2 file to a folder on my MAC and opened it with PSE6 - all was perfect!!!! It opened with the RAW converter!!! - YOU are absolutely right! Iphoto doesn't know how to handle RAW. So, I guess that is how I will transfer over RAW files from my PC. BTW - in Image Capture - it was set to "no application". Should I keep it that way and just import files from my Canon 40D (which will come over from a card reader) to a temporary desktop folder? Thanks again!!!!

Some time soon my son is going to buy a Mac Pro or if they come out w/ a new model I will buy a new one and give him this one which is not too old. He now uses a windows XP pc. the question I have is how do I / he transfer his files from the pc to the mac pro

I have recently bought a MacBook Pro, having moved onto it from Windows. However, I have many files that I need to transfer over, primarily photos and documents (i.e. Word and Excel). The problem is that the laptop likely had numerous viruses on it, so I am wary of transferring the files directly. I am told that many Windows viruses do not affect Mac, but have similarly been warned that I should not take this for granted. How can I safely transfer my files to my Mac? Are there any virus scanners that would be worth installing?

It's correct that Windows viruses do not infect Macs. That does not mean that you should transfer suspect files to the Mac without concern. You might end up sending some to a Windows user without realizing what you have done. The best approach isto scan the suspect disk on a Windows machine that has good AV SW installed and clean it up before transferring the files.

SINCE THE RELEASE OF LION AND MOUNTAIN LION. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO PROPERLY SHARE FILES FROM MY MACBOOK PRO (MID 2009) TO MY WINDOWS DESKTOP (VISTA HOME PREMIUM) WITHOUT LOGGING IN AS A GUEST. I USED TO ABLE TO LOGIN WITH MY USER NAME THAT'S ON MY MAC AND NO PASSWORD. HOWEVER; SINCE LION AND MOUNTAIN LION HAVE BEEN RELEASED I HAVE BEEN FORCED TO LOOK INTO MY WINDOWS FROM MY MAC AS A GUEST. I NEED HELP FIGURING OUT WHY IM BEING FORCED TO USE GUEST.

Open Keychain Access App, it is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. Then look through it for entries for your PC, Like username and or name of PC.
But in the end I don't really think that is going to solve your problem. Like everything with computers at any time something can get screwed up and it happens mostly when you are Upgrading to a New OS over the top of an older OS. This happen with Windows and Mac OS X.
So if my suggestion has no affect on you being able to log in to a Real User Account on the Win PC then it is something that happened durring the upgrade from you older version of OS X to Mt Lion. About the only way to correct that is to wipe the drive and reinstall clean. you can then use a current Time Machine backup to restore just your Files, Programs and Setting from that backup without overwriting the system files of that new install of Mt Lion.

I need advice on transferring from a Windows/Dell hard drive to an Apple Mac Laptop

Just copy the files you want to transfer to an external drive connected to the Dell. Then move that to the Mac and copy them from the external to your Mac.
Doesn't matter how the drive is formatted because OS X can READ Windows NTFS formatted drives.
I suggest you forgo the use of the Migration Assistant system as it doesn't work as expected and for the simple fact that no programs or settings can be transferred from a Windows PC to a Mac. Only personal files can be transferred and it is much simpler to do it manually.

After being a life long PC user my wife just bought me a Mac Book Pro. How difficult, or should I let the Apple Store techs transfer all my songs, movies, apps from my I-tunes on my Windows PC to my Mac Book? I have back up DVDs of my songs in I-Tunes if that would help. I never backed up my movies, which I know I should do ASAP! Any help and/or suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.

The Apple store will transfer all your user data, not only the media files.

I ordered my first Macbook which will get here on Monday, August 13, 2012. This is my first Macbook so I need a little help transferring my music over to my new laptop from my current Windows laptop. Is my best option just using home sharing? I did a Google search which turned up home sharing but I wanted to come on here to see if it is in fact my best route. Sorry my mistake , I posted the location of the default worksapce but the user defined workpace are saved in the preferences.

How come a USB will work with both Mac and Windows (as in that there are already files from Windows and Mac can still read and write onto it) but a external Hard Drive won't (as in there are files from Windows on there but Mac can read but not write)?

I have a Seagate Drive that I'm hoping to copy some movies from my Mac onto (because it only has a 512 SSD and I'd rather keep that empty and handy for more readily needed files) but it won't work. It shows up as a drive when connected (with the orange USB drive icon popping up) and is appropirately labeled "FreeAgent Drive", but when I try to copy files onto it it won't work. There are already windows files on there, such as some windows backups and lot's and lot's of pictures and videos. However, I have several USBs which already have windows files on them (namely movies, music, and other stuff) and copying and stuff works fine. Why won't it work with this hard drive and would work with USBs? Please help me out here guys, I am not experienced with Hard disks and formatting and stuff like that. 10 points for whoever helps me out the most. Thanks.

We will need to reformat your EXT, but it will then work on both Mac and Win
Connect the drive to your Mac, open disk utility
Go to the partiton tab and select '1' ... format should be ExFAT ... in options select MBR
Format the drive
It should now work on both OSs; report back

Split & Import WMA file from windows to mac

I have bought several wma files online that are rights managed that I want to play on my ipod. A few days ago, I found a workaround to getting them from the internet to my ipod - download file on the windows side of my mac (I have XP installed and use boot camp), play for a few seconds on the windows media player to acquire the license, burn to CD and then go back to the mac side and use CD to download songs to itunes, then to ipod. Works great except for this problem:
I just bought a file that is too large to get onto an audio CD. I am trying to use software to split the file but I think the license is preventing me from doing this. Anyone have a suggestion?

I'm not sure that solves my problem. I still have to start on the windows side to acquire the license by playing the file a few seconds on a windows media player. Then I have to burn the file onto an audio CD in order to import it into itunes on the mac side. My problem is the size of the file is preventing me from burning it onto a CD. I'm not sure how a program like Switch would help.

I need to transfer an iTunes library from Windows to Mac. .with a catch.

The catch is, I have a Mac formatted iPod, so if I understand correctly, I can't use it as an external drive to take the library from the Windows machine.
Anyway. . I'm buying my fiancee a MacBook, and obviously she wants her iTunes library from her Windoze machine. Her iPod is a nano, so it's not large enough capacity to transfer her whole library to her new MacBook.
So. . how do I get her music on her MacBook?

One way would to be to re-format the ipod for windows, enable disk usage, copy her existing library, then transfer to the mac ( the mac will read a window formatted ipod). Otherwise, if you have the ability I suggest networking the 2 computers, (macs & pc's can be networked together without a lot of trouble) an transfer via ethernet.
