Transfer all content to another iMac?

I have an older iMac that I was using that I would like to give to my wife as a replacement for her even older iMac. I have used firewire disk mode and even Time Machine to set up a New iMac, but I have never attempted to set up an existing iMac with all new content from another iMac. I am sure I could just wipe my old iMac and reinstall the system software (so essentially a new iMac) and then just use set-up assistant to transfer everything from her Time Machine.
But is there maybe an easier way to just get all her files and system to transfer over and just replace (overwrite) my excisting files?

Why can't you use Target Disk Mode? Connect the two via Firewire. Use Migration Assistant to migrate her Home folder, third-party applications, and system preferences. When that is done be sure the migrated account has admin status. Login to her migrated account from which you now delete your old account.
Of course if you prefer erasing the drive first and reinstalling OS X, then you can do that after which you can use the Setup Assistant to migrate from her old computer.
I don't know any easier ways than these.

How do I transfer all photos from my Imac, IPhoto version 7.1.5, to another Imac, IPhoto version 9.2, but keep the two sets of photos separate

You need to clarify what you are asking.
An iphoto installation has two major parts: 1. The application or program - that's the software and 2. The Library - that's where your actual pictures are.
    So when you say:
I want to keep using the old Iphoto program on the new Imac.  There is already an IPhoto program on the new Imac but I do not want to add or delete from that one.
It sounds like you want to move the application and not the Library. Most folks want to move the Library, and it makes no sense to have two versions of the application on your mac.

  • Can I transfer troubled contents of my iMac into my MacBook Pro & back?

Can I transfer the contents of my iMac (4,1; 2 GHZ Intel Core Duo; 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) into my new MacBook Pro (8,2: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7); both with OS 10.6.7?
I was having trouble with 10.4.11 on my iMac, as shown here: Link: [discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2768285&tstart=0]. I went ahead & installed Snow Leopard & had automatic downloads of the updates.
I am having more trouble now. By the end of the day, I cannot type into browser address line, nor delete highlighted items, nor highlight multiple items. This is temporarily cleared up by restarting.
I previously have always kept my machine going while away from desk. Now, in the evening, it seems to go to sleep--even tho I have web pages that are supposed to refresh themselves automatically & iTunes radio station supposed to stay running.
Yesterday & today after being away, I could not make the screen turn on--although the iTunes radio was playing. This is temporarily cleared up by restarting.
    1. Can this situation be fixed? Problems were not completely solved under Tiger.
Disk Repair indicated disk is OK. I have downloaded AppleJack; & each morning upon starting, it shows a full screen of permissions corrected of various forms of java in system library.

When some sort of update check runs, it shows a bunch of different missing bundle identifier:/library/receipts/...
Would this mean I should try to reinstall Snow Leopard again? (Then update that from my 10.6.3?)
    2. I plan to add memory.
    3. If necessary, I will buy & install a new hard drive.
Question for #2 & #3 (neither of which I have ever down before): If I transfer the contents of iMac hard drive to MBP, will it stay in a folder that I can transfer back, or does it all spread itself throughout the MBP?
If I install a new hard drive, will the transferred-back stuff still exhibit the same problems?
    Thanks,

  • My iTunes got deleted off a (no longer working) computer. Is there a way I can transfer all content from my iPhone onto iTunes on a new computer? I want to update my phone, but do not want to lose any music off it when syncing it.

My iTunes got deleted off a (no longer working) computer. I have lost all music & data that was on this original itunes. Is there a way I can transfer all content from my iPhone (music & photos) onto iTunes on a new computer? I want to update my iphone (3GS), but do not want to lose any music off it when syncing it. Help please!!

By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are using a new computer, your phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under iTunes>Preferences(under the edit menu if using Windows)>Devices in itunes.
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book & iCal or Outlook, Windows Address Book) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect your phone, iTunes running, DO NOT SYNC at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
You should be good to go.

  • Copy a folder and all contents to another Mac

I have a folder of other folders and albums. I would like to copy that folder and all of its contents to another Mac. So the other Mac will see it just like I do after the copy. Same folders and albums.
I do not want to just move the library as that would destroy what is already on the other Mac. I just want to copy the folder and all its contents in one "transfer" to another iPhoto.

Is this Folder in the iPhoto Window?
Use iPhoto Library Manager to move Photos/Albums/Events and associated metadata between libraries

  • How can i transfer all my photos from iMac iPhoto Library to macbook pro to iPhoto or Adobe Lightroom 5

Just bought a 13.3" Macbook Pro Retina display Mid 2014 and would like to transfer all my Photos from my iMac to my Macbook Pro.
I have a thunderbolt cable ?????? Would it work if i connect them together and how ? If i can get some assistance and instructions on how to do it , Will be appreciated .
    Best regards
    Sam

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
    If you're moving to Lightroom:
You need to export the images from iPhoto to the Finder, then import them to your Lightroom Catalogue.

  • I bought a new iMac and wonder if I can transfer all contents from the new iMac w/ Lion...to an old Intell MacBook 10.5.8

my Mac Book has 80 G hard drive and right now I only use 30 G on the new iMac.    Would love to put the clean installs and Lion on the Mac Book.
Is that possible?  Can I use the WiFi or ethernet or firewire to do this if it is possible?
    Ruth

If your new iMac came with Lion installed, then it is illegal to use it on another computer (these terms are contained in the SLA licensing agreement you agreed to).  Aside from that, it probably would not work because your Macbook may not even meet the minimum system requirements. If it does, then update it to Snow Leopard ($29) and then buy Lion.

  • Transfer iTunes content on another laptop.

I have just brought a new laptop and I would like to know if I can transfer iTunes and it's content from the old laptop onto the new one? As I wish to keep everything the same including my apple ID

If you bought all of your music, all you have to do is transfer the iTunes folder into the appropriate location on your new computer
If you have some music that you got elsewhere (Ex. CD's):
         1. Locate where you placed all of your music files.
         2. Create a folder on your desktop called Temp (Or any other name you can remember)
         3. From one of the locations (There may be only one, in your case), select all the files and drag them into your
         desktop folder (Temp)
         4. Keep doing step 3 if you have more then one location.
         5. Then, put the Temp folder on a flash drive and plug the drive into the new computer.
         6. Put the Temp folder in any place you'd like (On new computer)
         7.  In iTunes: File > Import > (Select the file from the place you chose on step 6)

  • IPhone 4 - transfer all content to new phone?

    Hello,
My iPhone 4 was accidentally dropped in the sink and was exposed to clean water for a second or two. I immediately fished it out and dried it off with a towel. The phone (screen, buttons) was working, though the sound was no longer working.
I switched the phone off and followed advice to cover the phone in rice to draw out the moisture. It's been covered for 24 hrs, I am waiting another day or two before I dare to switch it on.
I am worried that even though the phone seemed to be working, it might be damaged and suddenly stop working. I want to get a new phone, same kind.
The old one was backed up via iTunes to my laptop.
My question is: if I get a new phone, is there a way I can transfer everything that was backed up from the old phone to iTunes, to the new phone?
I am talking messages, pictures, music, contacts, notes, the works, like a replica.
    If yes, how?
    Thank you.
    Kind regards

  • I want to transfer all data from my iMac to my MacBook Pro. How do I do that?

My iMac's video card has died and I am told it is too old to replace.  They recommended transferring all my data from my iMac to my MacBook Pro.  They said attach a fire wire, and press "t' before the iMac starts up and then it will start in safe mode (or something like that).  But I don't know what to do next.  Can anyone help me?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you start up your iMac holding the T key, it will start up in Target Disk mode. In this mode, the iMac's hard disk appears as an external drive in your MacBook Pro, so you can access there and recover your data.
After starting in Target Disk mode, open a Finder window in the MacBook Pro and you will see the iMac's hard drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". Select it, navigate through your folders and copy them to your MacBook Pro's hard drive.

  • Transfer iWeb contents to another computer & merging Domain.sites2 files.

    Hi
I've a MacBook Pro with one set of iWeb files which are published. I've an older MacBook which contains a different set of iWeb files, which are also published. I want to consolidate both these set of iWeb files on one computer. I was reading that I need to transfer the Domain.sites2 file from one computer to the other.
When I do so, I don't want to clobber the original set of contents. How do I merge two Domain.sites2 files?
    thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
How do I merge two Domain.sites2 files?
You can do that with iWebSites. Just remember to make backup copies of both domain files to be merged in case the merge doesn't go as advertised. I've merged sites before with no problem.

  • Ages old question: transfer all disk content to new MacBook Pro

Dear all. I know this question has been asked zillion times before but the answers confuse me. I have a new MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (not Lion yet) and want to transfer all contents of my white MacBook 2008 (No FireWire !!) to the new one. I have a wireless network. Should I make a fresh backup with Time Machine to a external disk and then connect the new MacBook to that or would it be better to do it with Migration Assistant over my wireless network. In the last case, how long would 300 GB content take ? Thanks so much !

Some argue Migration Assistant from TM works but creates more headaches. This you can run after you've already set up a new machine.
Some argue that Setup Assistant from TM is better than MA above, that what occurs when you start the machine (or run OSX) for the first time.
You can also T boot the old Mac with a Firewire cable and transfer that way as well in either of the above cases or manually. I haven't tried with MA/SA yet, just manually.
Some people prefer to not have everything transferred over and then have to pick through and toss the old garbage afterwards possibly making their machines slow. As MA and SA have no brains, it's a blind copy. Some have privacy issues and don't want old application cache files tagging along for the ride.
I'm one of those that a new machine gets all fresh copies of current software and then picks out just the gems from another drive.
One is going to perform work either removing stuff and missing things and having a slowdown possibility, or one works to installs all fresh copies and keeps their machine from possibly slowing down.
So that's it. It's debatable and up to you which way you want to go about it.
The SA/MA route can bring over old programs that still run, so you don't have to need a paid upgrade.
But I figure if one is dropping several thousand on a new box, what's a few hundred more for current versions of software so there is no issues?
Guess it depends what is on the MacBook and how out of shape it is. Likely a pristine machine with little or no system level hooks or other garbage involved will MA/SA just fine. Garbage in = Garbage out.
