Transfer applications from external to my new mac

iv removed my old hard drive from my macbook (which i have sold) and am about to buy a new 13"mbp. unfortunately i couldn't buy the new machine before selling the old, so im presented with a problem... i could just install the disk in the new machine (its a 320gb 7200rpm, so in the long-term i'll be doing this in any case), but i'll want iLife 09 on there, and its possible there are system files that are required for the new machine that wont be on my old system (10.5.7, from a 2007 macbook).
The main thing is that i want all my files, and applications and settings, plugins etc on the new mbp, but because i dont have the old laptop i cant use migration assistant. the disk is in a usb enclosure currently.
So, do i install the old disk and then try and update iLife, or will i run into problems? Or, can i transfer my applications and all their settings via some other means? i have a (full!) lacie firewire external which i could perhaps employ.

ok... coming at the problem from a slightly different angle - what will happen if i simply install the other drive in the machine? (As i said in the original post, i do want this bigger faster drive in the mbp eventually). Then the OS will be current, but it'll be on iLife 08 and there might be system software missing(!). Will it work or will the laptop explode?
How about this - could i create a new version of the mbp OS from the install disc and put this on the external, then somehow merge over the old one?
thanks for your help

  • How do i transfer files from external harddrive to new mac

Okay I'm getting a new macbook pro with retina display tomorrow, but i currently own a macbook pro. I backed up everything on an external hard drive from the macbook pro. Question is, how do I get all my stuff from the external to the new macbook pro with retina?

Well, I would skip the Firewire since it isn't essential. Connect the backup drive to your new Retina when it arrives, but before you turn it on for the first time. When you then turn it on you will begin in the Setup Assistant where you will have an opportunity to restore your files from a backup drive or another computer. Select the appropriate option. You can then restore (migrate) your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Once that is completed when the computer restarts you will be all set up in your old Home folder.
Note that you will be transferring files over a USB connection. Depending upon how much data you are transferring this may take a very long time, so be patient. A USB drive's typical transfer rate is about 12 GBs/hour.

  • Transfer website from web to a new Mac.

I created my website on my old Mac.  It is dead.
I want to transfer my domain from the web to my new Mac and edit with IWeb.
    Thanks!

Carl ~ iWeb can't import your published site from the web. iWeb can only open its key Domain file (containing your site data) usually located here:
...If you can't access that on your old Mac and you have no backup copy, you'll have to rebuild the site from scratch — paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • How to move iPhoto Library from external drive to new mac?

I have exported a copy of my iPhoto Library from my old mac to an external hard drive. How can I import entire library into iPhoto of new mac? When I click Import to Library, I'm unable to highlight iPhoto Library file listed on my external hard drive in Finder. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Is the iPhoto library on the new computer empty? If it is, quit iPhoto and just drag the iPhoto library on the New Computer to the trash and drag the iPhoto library from the EHD to the pictures folder on the new computer - there is no importing involved - you NEVER want to import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto Library
If you want to run the new computer with the iPhoto library on the external drive simply launch i{Photo while depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library to point to the EHD

  • How do i transfer files from external hd to new hd in macbook pro

Hi Totally new to upgrading Mac.  I Backed up my hd to a an external hd. Upgraded my hd to 1tb. How do I make the transfer? The new hd does show in disk utility. Do I have to format this hd? Really not sure what to do next. Thanks

Format the new 1TB internal drive 1 partition, Option: GUID, Format: OS X Extended Journaled, give it a name and click Apply.
Then head to Erase and move the slider one notch to the right, then click erase and come back in a few hours.
What this will do is write zero's to the whole hard drive and then it reads it back and if the driver can't read a sector of data, it's mapped off never to be written to again.
This is a lenghtly process, but has the benefit of your precious data being placed on perfectly working magnetic sectors and reduces a lot of issues later on down the road.
Once that is finished, quit Disk Utility and install OS X using your AppleID and password on a reliable, fast, Internet connection (preferably via Ethernet cable)
Once that is done, reboot and setup. If your backup is TimeMachine or bootable clone, then hook that up first and reboot again so Setup Assistant see's it and you can use that to transfer your programs and accounts/files over.
If you want to start brand new, with no contamination of older programs, then install programs fresh first from original sources (best actually) and then manually transfer personal files from backup checking to see what they are.
If the account names are different, then drop the files into the DropBox folder of your new account's Public folder, this way the permissions and whatnot will change.
When you use Migration or Setup Assistant, it copies all your crap and unwanted history along for the ride.
Some like a clean start on a new machine, leaving sins of the past behind them.

  • Need help- How do I transfer iTunes from external/internal to new computer?

My old computer crashed. I have iTunes on an external drive, but not exported exactly as iTunes suggests in "back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive". I am following the directions from support "Restoring your iTunes library backup". Get all the way to "Choose Library", which I do, and then select iTunes folder. Step 7 says to click "choose". I click on the folder, because i do not have a "choose" button. Nothing happens, it just opens the file. If I connect my ipod it opens and a screen tells me I have to "erase and sync" because my ipod is synced with another library. Do I erase and sync? I'm scared of losing hours of music I copied from CD's. (I was able to transfer purchased music.) I have downloaded iTunes 9.0 on my new computer.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • How to transfer metadata from old PC to new Mac?

    All,
I would like to transfer my entire iTunes library from a PC to a MacBook Pro. The PC runs XP. My key question is how to import the metadata, i.e., play count and ratings?

    Hey JDelage,
Thanks for the question. This sort of data is stored within the iTunes Library itself, so you’ll want to transfer the entire iTunes folder. The following resource outlines some techniques, of which external drive may be your best option:

  • Getting (incrementally) backed up files from external HD to new mac

    Hi everyone,
The hard drive on my ibook died. I was running Tiger, and regularly backed up all the files on my home folder to an external hard drive. I use the software that came with the computer (Backup) to do this.
Yesterday, I purchased a MacBook. When I attach my external hard drive and try to open my backed up files, all I see is one full backup folder and many, many incremental backups. I understand, on a conceptual level, what incremental backups are. But I have no idea how to use them to retrieve my files.
So, my question is this: how do I retrieve files that were backed up to an external hard drive (from my old computer) and transfer them to the internal HD on my new computer? Migration assistant is absolutely no help here since I can't access the internal HD on my old, dead ibook.
    Many thanks for any tips,
    RB

If you used Backup to create the backup, then use it to restore the files.

  • How to transfer apps from old pc to new mac

I now have a brand new MacBook Pro laptop and have transferred everything except my apps from my old iTunes on PC to my new one using the home share function because there seems to be no option for the apps.  I've made sure the box is ticked in the General Tab of my Preferences on both computers but the apps still don't show up.  Am I missing something?  I have both firewire and USB cables for both computers.  Thanks for any input.

Your answer would be useful is you could help this novice just a little bit more.  I'm only able to view the iTunes sidebar when I've selected Music under Library and there is no Quick Link option.  It seems that every option I find pertains to music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, etc, but never the apps where I paid for them or they were free downlods!  How might I do what you offered?  Thanks for your patience!
