Transfer data from 10.4 G4 - Mac Mini 10.7

I have followed all the instructions for using Migration Assistant. Firewire 400-800 and the ethernet connection. I can not get past The " looking for other computers ", wheel. I never get the firewire Icon. However, if I unplug the G4 I do get the waring about unpluing devices. Also, I started the G4 in Target mode. Any thoughts?

Hello, forget Ethernet, unplug it.
Did you get a big floating Firewire Symbol on the G4?
In MA did you choose from... let me see, crazy wording, but something like a Time Machine Backup or other Disk?

Jolly makes a good point about screen sharing.
I prefer the firewire approach just because I have had more problems with ethernet connections than with firewire connections. Both options work, firewire has just been easier for me when the operating system on the machines are different. Read the options and post back if you would like additional coaching.

Erasing hard drive to install data from old computer to mac mini

I have tried selecting the hard drive in Disk Utility but so far have only succeeded in clearing the free space. Transfer data from mac to external hard drive

I am new to macs and am a bit lost.
I have a made up external hard drive (internal hard drive in a case) - TOSHIBA MK8025GAS Media. It is connected to the mac via USB.
I have been using it to transfer data from my pc to mac. The mac sees it and i can copy things from the hard drive to mac without problems. What i cannot do is to transfer from the mac onto the hard drive.
I pulled up the mac info of the hard drive and its both writable and ejectable (Has two partitions). In the partitions the info states that the owners aren't enabled, cannot turn owners off and cannot be formatted. Also the S.M.A.R.T. status is not supported. Not usre what all this means!
Can anyone tell me how to set it up to be able to transfer files to the hard drive from the mac and if it is possible to still transfer from windows to the hard drive?

A friend also told me that i could erase the hard drive using the disk utility in ms dos format. I have tried this and then could also partition it afterwards.
At the moment this seems to be working in both Mac and PC.
One thing i have noticed is when i try to transfer disk images (over 4Gb), near the end i get an 'unexpected error occured' (error code 1309).
From the internet:
error -1309 fileBoundsErr: file's EOF offset mark or size is too big
Whatever this means?

hey, Is is possible to use the ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from/to Mac and windows PCs?
I see no problem transfering data from/to my mac to the ipod. But I cannot see the ipod on the PC. When I plug the USB cable to my windows PC, it shows a popup message "external disk is not formated. Do you want to format it?".

Windows cannot read a Mac formatted iPod.
Macs can read Windows fomratted iPods.
You need to run iTunes for Windows, then Restore the iPod.
It will now work on both Mac and PC.

ok - since you'll be sharing it with a PC - connect it to your windows pc - then format from there - instead of NTFS format - choose exFAT.

You may want to use the Migration Assistant, which appears the first time you start up the new machine during setup, and also is available later (it is found in /Applications/Utilities.) Note that if you are running 10.4.x on the old MacBook both machines need to use FireWire to do this, but the late 2006 MacBook has that. You will need a special 4 pin to 6 pin FireWire adapter cable, as the FireWire ports on the newest MacBook Pros are different.

Unless you can use Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode, the fastest means is to use a Time Machine backup from an external drive, using the quickest port you have compatible with that drive.
However, I would NEVER, ever use Migration Asssistant for a new Mac from an old one. Setup Assistant is exponentially better, even if you have to start over.
