Transfer data from Powermac G4 to new 27" iMac

I have a 2003 PowerMac G4 that I am replacing with a new 27" iMac 3.4 i7 which is on order. I want to transfer my photos and iTunes files to the new machine. I had purchased a LaCie d2 USB3/Thunderbolt harddrive in hopes of backing up the G4 but it is "not supported by this architecture". The G4 was updated to USB 2. The LaCie is USB3/USB2 compatible.
Can I use Migration Assisant going form a pre-Intel computer to an Intel based computer? Is there a Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt or USB 3 cable? There is about 200 GB that I need to transfer.
Any suggestions?

• Transfer data from Powerbook 180 to G3 or iMac.

I'm trying to transfer data from a Powerbook 180 to a G3 or an iMac. It appears the simplest way is to connect them with an ethernet cable. However, the Powerbook doesn't have an ethernet port, so I was trying to track down an adapter, and a Farallon Phone Net connector came up. I have one of those. Is there some way I can rig it up to connect the computers that doesn't require a phone line?
Thanks!

Hi,
There were adapters that could convert the MiniDIN-8 Printer Port output to Ethernet. There were also SCSI-to-Ethernet adapters. However, even if the hardware bit could be solved, you may run into difficulties with connection/sharing software (depending upon which computers and operating systems are involved).
Since the typical size of a file on a PowerBook 180 is small, it may be easier to use 1.44 MB floppy disks for transfers. An external USB floppy drive would be needed for a modern computer.
Jim has already indicated that there is a null-modem option. As mentioned, the communications part of ClarisWorks can be used on the PowerBook 180 (or a separate terminal emulation application, such as ZTerm). A modern Mac does not have serial MiniDIN-8 ports, so some kind of USB-to-serial adapter would be required (and a corresponding terminal emulation program).
If you by G3 mean one of the older models with serial MiniDIN-8 ports, you could connect the printer ports through a plain Mac serial printer cable, just as Jim suggested. With suitable operating systems, file sharing should be directly possible, without the use of any communications software (enable AppleTalk, enable file sharing, connect via AppleShare in the Chooser).

How can transfer data from my old computer to my iMac

Depends. what two computer modelss do you have? Do they both have Firewire ports and/or Thunderbolt ports? Do you have a home network with a router that has Ethernet ports available for each computer? Do you have an external hard drive available that could be used to transfer data?

• Transfer data from FW drive to new imac

My previous imac died (logic board) and the HD from it is now in a firewire enclosure. Any tips on the best way to transfer data such as addresses, email etc.. to my new imac?

Hi Steve, Welcome back to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
Mine was a '99 G4 which blew a CRT Capacitor, I think, and took the Video Card with it. I put the HD in an external FWHD case and followed Kappy. My main prob was finding an up to date Quicken File—took forever but finally found one. Reinstalled M$ Office and Quicken from their discs per Kappy.
I now keep a relatively current BU on an OWC FWHD using SuperDuper. Paid their $27.95 and make 'Smart BUs' which take ~6-7 mins for ~1 gig of 20 gig to update.

• Want to transfer data from old TX to new TX

I need to move all my data from an old TX to a new one. I am unsure how to do this..... By what I understand all I need to do is hotsynch my new TX to my computer and all the data will transfer over, is this correct? Somewhere I read something about "computer to override handheld" or something like that. What is this, how/where do I access it? I appreciate anyones assistance!
Post relates to: Palm TX

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
Once you connect the new TX and press the Hotsync button, you will be given a chance to select your existing Hotsync ID, or create a new one, since the new TX will be a blank slate. Just select your existing Hotsync ID, and away you go.
Now, you *do* have the option of changing each Conduit to Desktop Overwrites Handheld before you Hotsync. This is usually done to troubleshoot problems with corrupted data, but it's also an extra measure of assurance that the desktop data will overwrite the blank data on the handheld. To change your Hotsync Conduit settings, enter the Hotsync Manager by clicking once on the red and blue Hotsync icon in your System Tray at the bottom right corner of your screen (or click Start > Programs > Palm/PalmOne > Hotsync Manager if it's not already running).
Select Custom. Then scroll down the list of Conduits to the one(s) you want to change. They must be changed one at a time, by highlighting the conduit name and selecting Change. In the next dialog box, select the Hotsync action you wish. Then click OK.
Repeat the process for any other Conduits you wish to change. The new settings will affect ONLY the next Hotsync operation...i.e. they will NOT become the new default settings, unless you also click the "Set As Default" box. In this case, you wouldn't want to do that, so just leave the box unchecked.
Good luck.

• How do I transfer data from old laptop to new one without using time machine?

I just bought a new Macbook and want to transfer everything over and wipe my old Macbook so the kids can have it. I have an external hard drive, that has photos etc. on it already. When I try to do a Time Machine back up, it tells me the drive is not formatted correctly and that to complete the back up, it will have to erase everything. I can't move the photos back on to the old Macbook because there isn't enough free disc space. So, I don't think I can do this with Time Machine. How would you recommend I transfer the data over? Thanks!

Use Migration Assistant during the setup of the new machine. Connect both machines up to a wired network if possible and follow the instructions. It's worth running software update on the old MacBook first as there was an update to Migration assistant for OS X 10.5 and 10.6 published recently.

• Regarding transfer of data from old pernr to new pernr

Hi Gurus,
here i am with scenario, transfer data from old pernr to new pernr with out using actions type.
it is better can anyone tell me the function module for the above scenario.

Hi,
What do you mean by new pernr?
Is the employee rejoined the same company in same country? - Then can change the employement status of the employee in IT0000 to active and the load other required data for this use REHIRE action. This will with only old pernr. (there is no new pernr concept. employee is just rejoining the same company in same country)
or if you have to use different pernr, then use to alteast use hiring action to create new pernr. I believe you are doing that . If you need to use old employee data from old pernr, then connect old pernr record with new pernr record using Reference Personnel Id concept of IT0031.
Please read the SAP document on help.sap. and go ahead.
If it is for different country also you can use IT0031.
I can copy paste the text from help, sap but it would look like junk. It better you and read through the document to understand the concept.
Then let me know if you need any help and do provide feedbk.
Good luck

• Trapped at transferring data from my old macbook pro to iMac

I got a new iMac yesterday and was trying to transfer data from my old macbook pro to iMac through time machine...
However, I encountered HUGE problems....
Background info: I set up a new account before I transffered my data.
Here is what I did:
I used migration assistance to transfer data. I chose to transfer everything listed on migration assistance from time machine to my new iMac.
After this process was completed, I switched to the transferred account from my newly-set account. Then I realized all the old stuf, (including the software problems + old apps such as microsoft 2008, had been transferred to my new iMac. what I really wanted were all the documents, pictures and music! Therefore I decided to delete this account....
Question 1:
1) I deleted the transferred account, then there was a windown came up asking me if i wanted to keep the home folder, I chose no. then mac started cleaning up and BACKING UP. Since I already had a copy of everything, I stopped the backup process....then this transferred account was deleted. However, everything was still on my mac that I don't have access to (at least I don't know how...) when I checked my mac stroage!
Could anyone tell me how to delete all the files I transferred from time machine to my new iMac?
Question 2:
2) how can i only transfer documents+pictures+music from my old macbook pro to new iMac through time machine without creating a new account? I want all the files to be directly transferred to my newly-set account...
LSS:
Question 1
I tried to transfer everthing from my old macbook pro to new iMac but i realized there were something I didn't want that had been transferred as well. Therefore I deleted this transferred account. However, all the files are still in my mac even if I have deleted that account. Could anyone tell me how I can access to those content and delete them?
Question 2
I just want the documents, music and pictures (from iPhone library) to be directly transferred to the newly-set account on my iMac through time machine (instead to transferred the whole old account to my imac) How can I do it??
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE OF GOING THROUGH THIS MESSAGE. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IF YOU COULD GIVE ME A HAND.
btw, you can totally see that i'm not a computer person at all....:( thanks for your help!!

I suggest starting over. Boot into Recovery mode, wipe the HD, reinstall the OS, and, on first boot, use the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide to do the migration.'

How do I transfer data from one time capsule to new time capsule when TC backs up an iMac and MacBookPro

It is generally better to leave the old backups and start again.. unless there is something you particularly need.
But if you desperately want all the old backups you have to copy the sparse bundles.. this will take very long time as it must copy via the computer..

Take particular note of the initial comments.. ie before you read how to do it.. don't do it.

What cable can I use to transfer data from a 2008 MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Pro with thunderbolt?

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

• Can anyone enlighten me as to how I can transfer data from an extracted hard drive off of a Macbook Pro onto a new Retina model? No SATA port!!!

Hello,
I'm trying to transfer data from my old hard drive (taken out of Macbook Pro 2009) onto a new Macbook Pro Retina. My ignorance is vast and I purchased an eSATA device to do so, not thinking that there is no SATA port on this new computer. Is there a special cable or anything anyone can recommend? I'd be very grateful for some help here.

I would just get a cheap USB enclosure from OWC, put your old drive in it, and use it it transfer the data to your new rMBP. Cheap and simple. The one I spec'ed is for a USB 3.0 enclosure as you have USB 3.0 ports on your computer - much faster than USB 2.0.
