Transfer disks from 2008 MBP to 2011 MBP?
My early 2008 MBP died (Apple Genius said logic board), so I took the opportunity to purchase a refurbished early 2011 MBP from the Apple Store. On the original MBP, I had replaced the HDD with an SSD and replaced the optical drive with a 7200 HDD. The MBP was current with Lion 10.7.2. I would like to install the SSD and 7200 HDD into the new MBP - any reason I won't be able to boot right up into the disks assuming a successful install? Thanks -
I see in another post that the drives from my old MBP won't have all the hardware drivers needed for the new MBP, so I'll need to do a fresh install on the drives https://discussions.apple.com/message/15362548#15362548.
If so, the migration process is more complicated. I'll need to backup everything from the SSD and HDD [somwehere] and then reformat the disks and install Lion and then transfer apps/settings/data from [somewhere] to the freshly installed disks.
Is Migration Assistant the utility I will use to pull over apps/settings/data? Can it pull from SuperDuper image? Can it pull from just a data folders? I probably won't have a Time Machine backup handy, but I do have SuperDuper and straight backups.

Hi,
I want to know how I can transfer Notes in my Outlook: Mac 2011 to my iPhone 4S.
Am using a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and my 4S is on iOS 6.
JesalFinally figured it out...
1) Open mail/compose notes on your macbook...
2) copy and paste every note from Outlook to a new note in Mail.
3) Open iTunes. In Info/Advanced tick Notes. This will replace / copy all Notes from Mail to your iPhone...
4) Voila! Notes are on iPhone...
I must say in spite of all the fabulous advantages of a Macbook and an iPhone, syncing really does suck...
Transferring data from another smartphone to a Mac or an iPhone is tough...
Features like "one way / two way" sync for Phone / computer or allowing us to select which whose, phone or computer, will be considered more important so that you can choose whose data will overwrite the other, are not there in iTunes... This is something which really needs to be there...
Anyways... problem solved for now...
ciao...

Battery capacity 2010 MBP vs 2011 MBP
We have two 17 inch MBPs in the household. I am very surprised to see a big difference in the full charge capscity numbers in the System profile:
MBP 2010 12234 mAh
MBP 2011 8844 mAh
I know the quoted battery life for the 2011models is less than the 2010 models but I thought this was because sandy bridge used more juice, not because they put a smaller capacity battery in.
Mac Tracker says they both have a 95 watt hour lithium polymer
Any insights?
<Serial Number Edited by Host>They are both about 100WHr but at different voltages:
12234 mAHr * 8330 mV / 1000 / 1000 -> 101.9 WHr
8844 mAHr * 12491 mV / 1000 /1000 -> 110.5 WHr -
Cannot Import Images from 2008 iMac to 2011 iMac over WiFi
I have 2 iMacs (i.e., 2008 and 2011). I use my 2008 iMac to store my RAW files for backup, and then I import them into Aperture 3 on my 2011 iMac over WiFi. I can see my 2008 iMac folders with Finder (Shared) on my 2011 iMac with no problems; however, I can't see my 2008 iMac when I am trying to import into Aperture 3 on my 2011 iMac. This used to work in the past. I am stumpted at the moment and I need an idea to try.
First on the iMac hold down the 'option' key while clicking on the Apple symbol in the right hand of the menu bar. There launch "System Profiler". In that program look and thr wireless section and see if it still sees the wireless card. If it does then lets move on to more steps to reset the OS X drivers for it.
To reset the OS X drivers for the Airport card follow these steps:
1. Shut off the Airport card fully by going to System Preferences->Network pane and turn off Airport.
2. With an Admin account go to the folder /YourHardDrive/Library/Preferences/ and find the folder "SystemConfiguration" and delete the files:
a) com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
b) com.apple.nat.plist
c) com.apple.network.identification.plist
3. Restart immediately to rebuild these files.
4. Upon the restart rejoin the wireless network. -

However My Girlfriend has a Macbook (white 2009) I plug everything into her laptop and everything works, chargers and reads. so its not the perferials or cables.
I know how to use Macs and PC very well and I have tried resetting and turning it back on whilst holding
Command>Option>P+R
and un plugged the charger shut it down, plug it back in and turn it on again. but nothing works... -
Why won't my 2011 MBP boot from bus-powered USB devices?
In the past, I have often made use of OS X's ability to boot from an external USB device. Before installing major OS updates, or new productivity software, I usually clone my system drive onto an external USB drive using Superduper or CarbonCopyCloner. Once the clone is complete, I can then boot from the external drive (by holding Option at startup, and choosing the cloned image from the boot disk menu). This has been incedibly useful in the past when I've had hard disk problems, or when I've upgraded to a new Mac.
My issue is with my new 2011 model 17" MBP. I am only able to boot from an external USB drive if the drive isn't bus-powered. If I try to boot from an OS X image located on a bus-powered USB flash drive or pocket hard drive, the drive seems to power down upon choosing it from the boot menu and I'm greeted by a blank gray screen. I've also tested this technique using a bus-powered DVD drive containing the Snow Leopard retail DVD (and a Windows 7 install DVD for what it's worth) and the problem remains. The optical drive will spin up upon startup, but power down as soon as I choose to boot from the DVD.
This issue only seems to affect my 2011 MBP. I've had no issues getting the same technique to work on my old 2007 MBP or a 2008 model MacBook.
Any help would be much appreciated.Fair enough. I'll give that a try as a last resort.
I used my wife's MacBook Pro, Target Disk Mode and a Firewire 800 cable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as I don't have an internal optical drive any more--just the standard HD and the SSD.
I did use the retail disc, and I'm wondering if the issue might be that since my machine is fairly new, I might have had to use the stock install disk--which I seem to have lost. I have the Applications DVD, but not the OS disc.
To that end, do you know of a way to get a replacement disc? I bought my machine at the store, I wonder if they'd be willing to copy one for me... -
Problems with Late 2011 MBP (catalog corrupt, won't boot from USB/CD)
Hello,
I have had some problems with my Late 2011 MBP running OSX 10.8.x (latest update)
I was using Safari when suddenly my screen froze. It has happened a couple of times before but it usually is either: 1.) a black screen for 5 seconds while nothing works responds and then it continues work like nothing happened, or 2.) just a freeze for a moment which goes away within a few seconds. I have visited the official service and they found nothing wrong with my laptop and said that it may have been just random occurrence. This time it froze and as I waited the fans went crazy and had no other option but to shut down from the power button. Later, when I wanted to boot up, it gets to the Apple logo, the circle spins and the small bar below appears and after a second or two, it disappears and then the computer shuts down. I went to recovery mode and used disk utility to verify and repair the problem (which only works to find out the problem, not to fix it, thanks anyway apple) Heres what it showed:

I tried to boot DiskWarrior from a USB and a CD, after pushing enter in the bootable device's screen, I get a continuous loop of 3 beeps and I can't boot from either of the mediums.
I also tried the Single-user mode (Command-s when booting) and the /sbin/fsck -fy said that my HD is not completely verifiable. Also, 3/4 of the files mentioned in disk utility are also mentioned in this process, with errors as forrows: keys out of order, invalid index key, invalid extent entries (7 times), incorrect block counts, number of links and incorrect sizes for the foretold files and invalid catalog record type.
The reason why I'm not doing a clean install is that the last few days I've been in the process of deleting unnecessary items on my laptop so I could make a back-up (as for some reason, Time Machine is awfully slow and a new 600 gb backup would take and enormous amount of time, but that's a problem for another day) and as I had not yet reached the backing up part, my data is locked on this (possibly) corrupt HD. How should I advance and what steps should I take?
My first and most important mission would be to get back into my OS to make a back-up. Then I'd deal with the "not being able to boot form USB nor CD" and the TM problem.
Thank you all in advance,
MartinBefore you even start, consider that there may be no Windows 7 driver support for some of the hardware in your laptop. You won't know which hardware devices and functions are unsupported until you find out the hard way. In some cases, a driver conflict could cripple your computer.
Like most OEMS, Toshiba pre-installs Windows 8 to boot with EFI on a GPT hard drive. Your Windows 7 install disc, on the other hand, most likely boots with a BIOS from an MBR. Therefore, your Windows 7 disc will not boot your computer.
You would need to start by performing a low-level format of your hard drive. This completely erases the disc and its metadata. Then you could boot from your Windows installation disc and try to install Windows 7. How successful you will be depends on driver support.
All things considered, you should stay with Windows 8. Next time, more research before you buy. -
2011 MBP MC700 13" cann't install win7 from an external usb CD/DVD ROM
My new 2011 MBP MC700 13" cann't install win7 from an external usb CD/DVD ROM,WHY?
Yes, very annoying. Not unworkable though. We've a bucket load of different external devices too, tried all of them.
It's not common to one OS either - can't boot OSX DVD, Ubuntu, Win7.... Only way I can is via the internal SuperDrive when it's actually internal.
Even tried it with just 1 x Hard Disk & an External USB. No joy.
Obviously not annoying enough for me to try and find a solution I just work around it now. Interesting it's been the same on my last three MBPs though - no problem on both the Air's I've owned. -
My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
Thanks for the help. When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

2011 MBP 17" 2.3 GHz - High pitch hissing sound from left speaker
When I transfer large amounts of data (wifi and ethernet) I get a high pitch hissing sound from the left speaker. When the transfer is done, the hissing stops.
Is anyone else experiencing this and is there anything I can do to stop it?
When it occurred: I was transferring data from my old MBP to my new 2011 MBP first via WiFi, then by Ethernet (much faster . My old (2007) MBP had not hissing what so ever, by my new MBP was rather loud. I'm very happy it's only when using the network.I get this sound every time I download, WiFi or Ethernet it dosen't matter the sound is the same. I can't guarantee that it's from the speaker, I have an old Netgear switch that sounds the same when I use it (just to clarify: I'm not using that switch anymore or ever have with this MBP)
So it could be some electrical sound (I'm not a hardware engineer) just a guess. -
New 2011 MBP 13" doesn't want to boot from USB
Just got brand new 2011 MBP 13" and tried first boot from the external bootable clone of up to date system volume from my older MBP - no go at all. It allows me to select the external USB volume to boot from but then it stays on the gray screen with Apple logo doing nothing.
Old MBP boots from the same external USB with no problem, boots as well from the clone of my iMac without chocking. But nothing happens with new 2011 MBP 13".
Both external volumes mount and show as start-up disks, but no matter which way I try to boot new 2011 MBP from any of them it just doesn't work.
Any help? What you mean by "too old"?
They don't have the needed drivers, which are only present on the new MacBook Pro models. A Mac OS X version which shipped with a Mac counts as newer than a copy with the same version number that was attained through usage of the downloadable updaters.

HELP... Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep. I straight away uninstalled Deep Sleep, but the problem has increased.
Now when I try to awake from sleep, a grey screen with the apple logo appears with a progress bar underneath it, which slowly moves to the forelast indicator, then it stops and a audio signal starts. Three bleeps and pause.
Then when I press the on/off botton and restart the system, the underneath error reports appears with the heading RAPPORTD unexpectedly failed.
Can any one help?

Can I use flash drives to transfer data from one MBP to another at a differ
I've looked and cannot find any info on the use of flash drives. Can I use a flash drive to transfer data from one MBP to another one at a different location? (ie; school Apple and home MBP) Grade tests and papers at home, enter data into home computer, then put it on flash drive and carry flash drive to school, transferring data to school desk top? Are certain flash drives preferrable over others, name brands, size, etc?
Yep, you sure can. Just about any drive will work as mentioned above. But I'm partial to SanDisk and PNY. I've used both and they work great! Currently I carry both a 2GB SanDisk Micro Cruzer and a retractable 2GB SanDisk Cruzer, both really nice. Replaced my oldie but goodie 256MB PNY drive that I've been using since they first came out.

Why wont the SSD from my 2011 MBP work right away in my 2012 MBP?
I have a 2011 MBP running a Samsung SSD 470 without a problem.
I swapped the SSD into my new 2012 MBP which is, apart from the yearly updates (2.3 i5 to 2.5 i5 processor and RAM speed increase from 1333 to 1600) exactly the same computer. I expected to literally carry on using it from where I left off in the 2011 model but the 2012 machine will not boot with this drive in it.
Why?actually i own a late 2011 Macbook Pro and I bought my niece a new 2012 Macbook Pro....
gave her one of my old Kingston V200 128GB SSD to give her speed....
It booted but kept on crashing and the startup is very slow...So i did an internet recovery install....And now it's working great...
came to a conclusion ( i may be wrong ) - because my 2011 is a Sandy Bridge Processor/Chipset combo and the 2012 is the new Ivy Bridge Processor/Chipset combo was the issue...After a clean install, everything was fine...
I understand you're hesitant about doing a clean install because you don't have it backed up....
Try booting with the original drive to see if your sata cable is fine just to eliminate your sata cable as defective... -
Hi,
I am in the fortunate position to also get a 17" in addition to my 15" MBP. I've used SuperDuper to backup the 15" disk to an external FireWire disk from which I can boot fine. Now would it be possible to boot the 17" from it and copy the entire disk over the 17" system disk? Has anybody done this or will be there an issue with different kernel extensions (like the recent issue with 17" support for double finger context menu click, that was not on the 15").
Cheers, Fons.Hi,

People are posting that they have perfect no whine/hiss 17in MBP's. Not ME! I am on number 3, yeah THREE. First one had a nasty scratch on the screen bezel and a very weak screen clutch (hinge) that allowed the screen to "flop" backwards or forward. The second one had a bad left latch, would not catch and looked bad. They ALL had no whine but had a "hiss".
Now check this out, having had a MacBook Pro 15" I had backed up my drive with Carbon Copy Cloner to a FW Drive. I noticed that if I cloned the drive onto the 17" the "hiss" would go away! This is using a MBP 15" 2.0 system with all updates applied. If I use the supplied 17" install disks I get the darn "hiss", with all updates applied.
So here is what I noticed, the CPU throttles up and down with the 17" install disk system software, using CoreDuo to monitor CPU. (the GPU speed also varies depending on load, etc. per previous reader report.(Mike @ xlr8yourmac.com)
With the 15" 2.0 system software it stays at 2167 MHz, with no variation in CPU speed.
CoreDuo Temp shows it runs like 5-10C hotter with the 15" system software. The 17" system software throttles down if CPU's do not do much and the case is cooler but the "hiss" is present.
So I am remaining with the 15" 2.0 MBP System, this has been tested on 3 MBP 17in Macs. On the previous two the "hiss" was not that noticeable, more like a slight fan noise, but it stopped with the Mirror Widget, so it is CPU related.
The previous two also had tweaked eject keys, pointed down to the right... This one is flawless in appearance. I have yet to calibrate the battery and maybe, just maybe this might silence the "hiss" enough to go to the 17in system disks... I have both systems backed up on 2 separate FW Drives.

Repair permissions in Disk Utility won't stop
OK, I've never done permissions repair on our MacBook Pro 15" (2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). (My apologies to the fastidious cleaners among this group.) I've done multiple upgrades over the past 4 or so years that we've owned it, i
