Transfer – Edit – Burn question

Hello, folks. I think i have a problem without a solution and this surprises me considerably. I believe many people would want to do what I will describe and, if there is no solution, Apple and others are missing a big opportunity.
I bought a HD recorder to attach to my television. It's a Sony RDR HX750 (Sony was never great on memorable model names!)
First complaint, which is really off-topic, is that there is no direct-out to send data to my Mac. So I must first transfer data to DVDs. Many of them!
First, I want to get the video into my Mac. Once in there, i want to be able to edit out the commercials and other footage that I don't want.
Then I want to burn the edited data to DVD for archiving and, most important, for playing on the television. Thus, I want the data to remain in VIDEO_TS folder format.
iMovie? no. It maintains its data in some proprietary format. It's suited only for home users who want to view digital video that they created, on the computer. I find nothing at all to like about iMovie.
Final Cut Pro? Too expensive, steep learning curve and still might not do what I want.
A friend in Germany is a consultant to Elgato. He recommended I look at eyeTV. Nope. MPEG only. And so are a half-dozen lesser "solutions" that I examined. MPEG is useless in a regular DVDS player.
I hope someone has a solution for me but I doubt it. Thanks for listening. Is there a software developer out there looking for the Next Big Thing?

If I do something, I like to do it professionally. I want my editing to be seamless and accurate.
I can understand wanting to make it look it's best. But since you're recording in such a highly compressed format (which will be your source footage), you'll need to convert it to an editable format ... like DV for example. Then you edit and you'll want to put it back on DVD ... compressing the footage once again. That's at least three hits to the quality.
That isn't a professional approach at all. You should be recording to a device that records natively in an editable format; a VTR or a professional hard disc recorder like the Firestore series of products from Focus Enhancements or those from Laird and CitiDisk.
FWIW, the reason it's difficult to edit accurately with the DVD recorder is due to MPEG-2's GOP structure. You can only edit at an I-Frame. Just another of MPEG-2's limitations.

  • Editing/Burning High-Definition (HD) DVDs on my MBP?

    Hello all,
I'm considering upgrading my camcorder to HD. (purchasing a new one)...
I know this question could go in either iMovie or iDVD, but I figure I want to know about the DVD burner we have in our MBPs and thus here I am.
If I purchase a new camcorder that creates HD movies, could I import/edit/burn an HD dvd? Or would I need to purchase a Blue-Ray DVD burner for my PC?
Also, would iMovieHD be used to edit HD movies? Or is it just for Standard Definition (SD) movies?
And am I understanding correctly that I should NOT purchase a camcorder that has a hard drive... but just a regular Mini DV tape camcorder?
Thanks for helping out this camcorder newbie!
    Ted

    Tedology,
First, you will not be able to burn a Blueray or HD-DVD with your MBP alone; the drive will only handle standard DVDs. So, you would have to use an external burner. Thing is, I don't know if there are (yet) any Blueray or HD-DVD burners that can be used with your MBP.
iMovie HD does handle HD content very well, and has for quite some time now. After all, it is iMovie HD. Until now, the only "out" option has been to either send edited content back to the camera, or to use the H.264 codec to convert to Quicktime.
As another poster has already mentioned, any H.264 content could then be burned as a Quicktime file to a standard DVD, but that will seriously limit your playback options (we're talking about a data DVD, not a video DVD).
Perhaps someone will happen along who has first-hand knowledge concerning iMovie's compatibility with the current HD burners on the market. I see no reason why they wouldn't work with the MBP, but iMovie is going to have to include support for them. That, I just don't know about.
Yes, the best option in any case is to use a camera that records to mini-DV tape. HD recording cameras will work, but the camera already compresses the video for storage on the HD. This is a lossy process. Mini-DV will give the highest quality possible.

  • New Year Video Transfer/Edit Project - Need Advice

All you experts out there, please tell us if this plan will work?
We have 3 large boxes of family videos that we need to transfer to DVD.
We are about to purchase video-to-DVD transfer equipment. (Sony DVDirect VRD-MC5?)
We have iMovie, but haven't used it yet. We realize there will be a steep learning curve, but we did buy some books to help and have plenty of time to learn.
Plan: 1) Transfer, unedited, the videos to DVD using the Sony. Apparently this requires little oversight. 2) Load the DVD to iMovie for editing. One of us works a night job that often has a lot of down time that can be used to edit these DVDs. 3) Burn a new DVD, the "keeper" and then make copies for all the kids.
Is this our best option? Thanks for sharing your experience!

Given what you have said, I think the EyeTV Hybrid might be a good solution for you, although the Sony box may be OK too, but it will give you fewer options in the future if you or your kids decide to edit or move to the internet.
With the EyeTV Hybrid, you hook it up to the VHS VCR through the red, white and yellow cables out the back. It goes in to EyeTV software on the Mac. At this point, you can transfer it directly to some DVD burning software called [Toast|http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html], and never get iMovie involved. If you decide later to send to iMovie for editing, [EyeTV|http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/hybrid/product1.en.htm l] can send it there.
I have found that with the new iMovie 08, I can edit these videos rather quickly, cut out all the jerky camera pans, cut out the redundant scenes, and add titles and music. A movie that would take me a week in iMovie 6, I can now do in an evening.
My biggest advice would be to think through how you will use the video... e.g. DVD, iPod, internet, AppleTV, iMovie, anything you can think of that you will actually use in the near future.
Then, get the hardware and software you need and pick one tape and work it through the whole workflow so you understand everything from front to back. Then you can start picking up the speed and just doing the imports, etc.
    1) Where do we purchase a "digital analog converter"? Is there a brand name that works well? You >>make a good point about working with the original. Do we understand correctly that we'd use this >>converter to transfer a VHS playing in a VCR directly to iMovie where it could be saved and edited, >>burn a DVD, and then move on to the next VHS tape?
Canopus sells digital audio converters, which converts your analog into DV format, which is a good format for editing. The EyeTV, mentioned above, will take your analog and save it is MPEG2, which is the format that DVD players use, but requires some extra conversion before you edit it. So if you are primarily doing editing, go with the Canopus. If you are going straight to DVD, the EyeTV is fine.
    2) Does the Wii work like the Sony playbox? These are new things for us..., but we do have a Wii >> now - got it for Christmas.
Enjoy your Wii. I have heard they are great, but it will not help you play video (that I know of). The reason that some people use the Playstation 3 is that it has a built in BluRay player that can play high definition movies, and i has the added quality that you don't have to burn a BluRay DVD to put high definition content on it. You can use a thumb drive, for example. Not really relevant to your application.
    3) Does an Apple TV actually store the movies then? Can they later be downloaded, edited, and >> saved to DVD or whatever is the latest thing? (Obviously we don't have an Apple TV and don't >> know a thing about them.) Would this be a quick fix? If we could store them now, be able to
view them easily, and later, as we have time, we could edit and burn them to a DVD, that might >> be worth the money.
With the Apple TV, you can either store the movies on your Mac, or you can store them on the Apple TV. Usually, you would want to use the TV to watch edited movies, not long unedited ones. When a movie is ready for TV, it is already in a format that can be burned (h.264). If you ever watch movies on an iPhone, it is the same format, but a better picture because the video is created at larger dimensions and at a higher data rate. The TV is primarily a convenience, because you can pick your movies off a menu. You don't have to get up and change DVDs.

  • How do I transfer EDITED clips from one IMovie to another

I have tried to transfer edited clips (with original sound) from one IMovie to another. However, the system transfered the original clips instead of the edited clips.
Does anyone have any tips on how to transfer the edited clips only and not the original clips.
    osx 10.3.9 and Imovie 5.0.2

That will copy the original, imported material, not
the edited version. I.e. if I trim an imported clip,
the .mov file will still be the un-trimmed,
    full-length clip.
Not the movie Lennart means. The movie Lennart refers to — called the Timeline Movie.mov and located in the Cache folder inside the project — plays the edited Timeline of Project A. (It's a reference movie containing pointers to the audio and video files in the Media folder.) When that Timeline Movie is imported to Project B, it delivers all the edited video and audio of Project A as a single clip to Project B. (He's not referring to the video and audio files in the Media folder, which I think you mean.)
taronger, if all you want is a single clip, another way is to select the clip in the iMovie Timeline and export it to a Full Quality movie. Be sure to turn on the checkbox "Share selected clips only" in the export dialog window. Later, import that exported movie to another project.
I did some trials and found out that transfering edited clips (not original clips) can be done by selecting several consecutive clips in the original movie, and using the copy command. It is then possible to go to the new movie and use the paste command to transfer the edited clips.
Yes, that delivers the clips, but it doesn't deliver shortened clips. It delivers the entire source file of the clip. So if Clip 2 is 5 seconds long but its source file is 3 minutes long you get the entire 3 minute source file.
It's sometimes easiest to export the clips you want from Project A back to the camera, then re-import them to Project B. That accomplishes everything you want, delivering the edited material trimmed to the shortest length possible.
Note that the clips must stand shoulder-to-shoulder on the Timeline and the "Share selected clips only" checkbox must be checked. (Some versions of iMovie fail to stop the export to the camera at the end of the last clip. You may have to stop it manually.)

  • How do I transfer edits from my iPad to the desktop version of Lightroom?

I am trying to transfer edits made on an iPad to the desktop Lightroom CC.
The edits were made while travelling without a computer and ideally I would like to import these edits into the desktop files.
    Using the Mac version.

Ok, just to make sure that I understand what you are trying to do:
You have already edited the images on the iPad but you have imported the images to your Desktop where the changes aren't visible since you once again took them from the SD card?
As I understand it you have a different copy of the images on your device and the desktop since the edits weren't on the SD card once you imported them to the Desktop.
I still don't know which application you did these changes on the iPad or if your camera takes RAW's or JPG's.

  • How to transfer edited photos to PC? Question AND some solutions!

I make photos with my 5s. I Love HDR and Volume Trigger, so I use apple camera app.
I hate 4:3 Ratio, so I edit the photo using the apple photo app (or directly after shooting the photo) to 16:9 and it looks great.
Once a Week I sync with itunes and get my photos to PC (Win7) BUT only the Original Photos appear on PC.
I already read in apple help that the editing is "non-destructive" so only applied in meta data, which will be read correctly on a MAC ...
But I want my edited photos?
Is there an easy way to get them?
I already know follings workaround which I dont really like.
    1. Email the Photos (too time consuming for me)
    2. Use another Photoeditor App and save either lokal in app then transfer only from that app instead of apple photos app. (I love the stock app, especially red eye fix)
    3. Use another camera app which CAN directy save 16:9 photos, so nothing to edit.(here also I love the stock app and didnt find anything compareable, I already own procamera 7 and camera+)
    4. edit photos on PC and s**t on apple (actual my favorite)
    5. Use Dropbox (auto upload function will only upload originals). On the other hand if I choose in dropbox manually photos to be uploaded the edited ones will be there (my favorite #2)
I included the solutions for other ppl. with same problem to let em know.
    Any other solutions?

Have you tried after editing the photo, and it is in full view, do a screen shot? The saved screen shot should appear as a new photo.

  • FCE, Sony HD Camera, Family Video Editing, & Burning (HD?)DVD

Ok. Here goes ... I am a new iMac enthusiast who has "seen the light". That being said, I will be purchasing my first iMac in 30 days and I am hopefull that my expectation(s) do not fall flat because they are unrealistic. The only expectation in which there appears to be some doubt is this ... I am planning to convert all of my family videos (present formats of VHS, VHS-C, & AVCHD) to a HD format on a DVD, or at least to another electronic hardware such as a hard drive or a library of SD cards. Well, how many holes do I have in my plan? Before you answer, allow me to tell you my understanding of the barriers. First of all the actual conversion of VHS format to a digital format. I do have a Plextor Digital Video Converter with which I have, in the past, successfully converted the analog VHS format to a digital format and saved on a Windows PC, so I do have some experience with that effort. I do understand the labor intensive exercise this could prove to be. Second, I anticipate the VHS-C conversion to be about the same process. However, what about the video that I presently have on my Sony HDR-SR11? I have already done some importing and editing of said digital video via my daughter's MacPro & iMovie, but what about burning it to DVD? Of course, when I burned the video to DVD it converted to standard format. I want it to be in a HD format. From what I have seen in forums and various discussions on the net, this is almost impossible without some relatively complicated manipulation via Toast 10, BluRay drive, etc. type effort. What is the deal? Why the black hole of interface when it comes to burning digital video to a HD format, even when the original source is HD? It seems to me that there is a huge opportunity for Apple to capture a tremendous segment of business by providng an "Apple-like" seemless process of conveting (AVC)HD video and enabling the burning (archiving) of such video to a digital disk in either iMovie or FCE or whatever, be it a DVD or SD card.
Ok ... back to my question. Is the gap as large as I understand it to be? Is there no other way to accomplish this task? Is FCE a viable option and/or tool in this effort or not? Am I better off using Toast 10 or is that not even the answer? Help!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I think your expectations are on the whole very realistic, and FCE would certainly help in what you seem to be wanting to do. For converting old VHS tapes, an analog to DV converter will do the trick. You simply plug in the converter to your camera, and it should convert the analog to a DV format that you can capture directly into FCE with the DV Converter preset to make things easier for you.
As for using AVCHD, FCE does not edit it natively but will convert it upon ingest to Apple Intermediate Codec for editing natively. Not much quality is lost in this conversion, and the Log and Transfer interface within FCE that you use to ingest AVCHD from your camcorder is top notch.
The thing you have to understand about HD-DVDs is that they are very costly to produce and view, with a rather small viewer base. It is possible as you said to burn HD DVDs using Toast or the DVD Studio Pro that comes with Final Cut Studio. Even then you would need a separate Blue-ray disc burner to hook up to your computer, the expensive HD discs themselves, and an HD DVD reader to hook up to your HD TV. I guess the reason why iDVD does not offer HD DVD burning is that there are a relatively small amount of people who require it or have the funds to make it work smoothly. Very few people have HD DVD readers in their homes anyway, so you can be assured that most DVDs you would burn would be played solely on your machine.
Do not give up hope! SD DVDs still preserve pretty good quality, are easy to use with the software installed on the Mac, and are assured to play on the majority of TVs owned by people today. If you are bent on getting the HD to work for your TV, Ian's helpful post on [viewing HD videos|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10506824&#10506824] with an inexpensive media player might make more sense for you.
So all in all, FCE is a viable tool for most things you would like to do with video. However, if you are sure you want to burn to HD DVDs you will need other software and equipment than what comes with your Mac.

  • How do I transfer edited photos from Roxio PhotoShow 5 to Adobe Photoshop Elements 7?

I have done quite a lot of editing, cropping, etc. on photos in my Roxio PhotoShow 5 and now that I have purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 I want to transfer the edits not just the original pics. Does anyone know how to do this? Also, can I transfer slide shows from one program to the other? Do I have to burn and then upload into PSE7?

    Definitely helpful.
Do the WMV or AVI option. I'd try both, and compare the quality in Windows Media Player. Basically, either format should work in Photoshop Elements, but you really want to use the best quality video to start with, because you lose quality each time you re-export a video file (that's just the way re-saving compressed video works in any application).
Once you have a good quality video, and you want to add onto that slide show in Photoshop Elements, open the Slide Show Editor and click the Add Media button at the top to bring it in.
Also, the "PhotoShow File" option might work, but I think you'd have to figure out how to convert it into something Elements can work with. One advantage is that you'd most likely be preserving the quality of the original show. If you're interested in pursuing this option, and you can upload the resulting file(s) made when using that option to a website or e-mail them to me, I could take a look to see whether this can be done.

  • IDvd 6 Burning Question

When Ilife 04 came out I rushed to get it only to have massive problems with Idvd 4, the same burning problems everyone was having and Apple never acknowledge: Burning a dvd took an eternity, if at all succesful. So I'm getting my Ilfe 06 tonight, should I expect any terrible surprises or am I in for a treat?
I have over 6 hours of dv that needs editing and transfer to dvd and I certainly don't want to waste any time.

  • Once an iDVD is complete & burned question

If I have completed and burned a new iDVD can I take that iDVD and insert into another MAC and edit it?
Example: I created an iDVD for a friend and mailed to her. Now she wants to change the music on the iDVD I made. Is this possbile? Can she upload the idvd onto her MAC and edit it?

Q: If I have completed and burned a new iDVD can I take that iDVD and insert into another MAC and edit it?
A: No. A dvd is considered a finished product in that it is highly compressed data (normally to mpeg 2 format) and not normally intended for editing again.
What you can do is archive the iDvd project file to an external HD or volume (or another mac) and then use another mac for further editing. However this approach uses large amounts of disc space.
Another option might be to send the dvd to your friend and then use a third party app to convert to QT for use within the i-apps.

    Directly from iDvd's Help Menu:
Archiving an iDVD project to back it up or transfer it to another computer
You can archive your iDVD project to back it up or transfer it to another computer. This is useful in an environment with several computers, such as a computer lab, where only certain computers contain a SuperDrive or have an external DVD burner for burning DVDs.
When you archive your project, iDVD keeps all the assets (movies, photos, audio files, themes, and the files in the DVD-ROM section of the project) together and linked so that the project can be moved and reopened without errors.
Archiving a project can take some time because all the data in the project must be copied and relinked. You can cancel the archiving process at any time.
NOTE: If your project uses a special font, make sure that font is installed on the computer where you transfer your project. Otherwise, you won’t see the font in your project.
    To archive your iDVD project:
Check the file permissions for the media assets (photos, movies, and so on) in the project and set them to Read & Write if you want others to be able to open or copy the assets in the archived project.
Choose File > Archive Project, and then click Save.
Type a name for your archived project.
Locate the folder where you want to save the project.
The size of the current project is displayed in the Archive Project dialog.
Click “Include themes” if you want to archive the theme or themes used in your project.
Select this option if you are using customized themes that might not exist on another computer.
Click “Include encoded files” so that the project files won’t need to be reencoded after being moved to a different location.
If you want to save time and hard disk space, however, leave this option unchecked.
    Click Save.
A progress bar shows that your project is being archived. The larger the project, the longer it takes to archive.
Your project is saved with the word “Archived” in the file name.
You can open the archive and continue to edit the project if necessary.
NOTE: If you open a project archive and add media files to it, those files are not automatically added to the archive. So if you want to include those files in the archive, you must archive the project again.
Hope the above helps but if not just come on back.

i am fairly new to imovie and idvd. but i have been a mac user for decades. i took a lot of dv over the holidays. i have imported some...i didn't want to overload the hd. (i have over 20 gigs free). then i did some editing with imovie. then i bought some apple dvd-r discs from apple. the speed is 8x. i have tried a lot of different things and i can not get this movie to burn. when i use these same discs to try and back up -- which usually works -- it won't allow me to. it can not be my drive because i just backed some work up to a fuji cd-r (up to 48x). and that worked just fine. so is it me? do i need to read a manual? is there a manual? or could it be these apple discs and their 8x? i want to finish these darn holiday movies but i am ready to jump out of a window! please help!

Well the first question is, do you actually have a SUPERDRIVE that can burn DVDs or do you have a Combo drive that can only read DVDs but not burn them? You wouldn't be the first person to assume their drive can burn DVDs only to check closer and find out they can't.
Go to the Apple menu up there in the top left corner. Pick the About This Mac option, then click the "More info..." button. Under hardware, click the "ATA" choice which will show you info about your hard drive and optical drive. My optical drive shows up like so...

  • Student & Teacher Edition - license question after upgrade

Hello, I have a question about the license after an upgrade.
I understand that I cannot resell the CS6 Student & Teacher Edition. But it can be upgraded to a following, full commercial CS7 version later, when I'm not a student anymore.
In this case, can the new version be sold?

    Hello,
    Welcome to Adobe Forums.
You can buy Retail CS7 in future and then you can transfer or sell it
    Thanks,
    Vikram
