Transfer files from iMac to MacBook pro

I have an iMac (5.1) and have just ordered a new MacBook pro.  I have everything from my iMac backed up via SuperDuper and Time Machine on an external hard drive.  What is the best way to transfer all my files (mainly music and photos) to my new MacBook Pro ?  Does, for example, the fact that my iMac is running Snow Leopard and MacBook Pro will have Lion make any difference to the best way to transfer everything ?   Also, one relevant problem is that iPhoto on my iMac has also gone into meltdown and will not even open so i do not know if this complicates how I transfer my iphoto library to my new computer. Grateful for any help and advice.

You can transfer your files using Time Machine perfectly, and you won't have problems because it doesn't matter the version that your old Mac have. You shouldn't have issues with your iPhoto library, because the problem is the app

  • How to share files from iMac to MacBook Pro thru USB

I would like to network my new MacBook pro to my iMac with a USB connection. I want to transfer files from my iMac to the MacBook. I have the cable connected, but don't know how to have the two computers "link".
    Please advise.

When you log into a Mac, no matter from where, you must log in as a user on that Mac (although you can log in as guest, if the sharing preferences are set correctly).
So, when you try to connect to one or the other Mac, are you logging in as a user on that Mac? Does that user have access to the files you are trying to share?
If you have a userA on MacA and userB on MacB, If you try to connect to MacA from B, you must log in using credentials of userA. Then, you'll have access to anything userA has access to.
You can also create Sharing Only users in the Sharing Preferences when you share out a folder. Just select New Person when you add people to the sharing list. You can then log into that Mac with that username and password and it will give you access to the folders allowed for that user.

  • How do I transfer files from my old MacBook Pro to my New MacBook Pro?

I am trying to transfer some files, not all, from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro. I have tried to use Migration Assistant, but it doesn't let me choose what I want to transfer (only generic things like "users" and "files and folders"). I have tried to use Firewire. Now here is the funny thing. When I put my old mac in target mode it doesn't appear on my new mac anywhere. But, when I put my new mac in target mode, it pops right up on the dashboard and in finder. The problem is I have tried using my new mac as the target and just place the files into the icon, but the don't stay after I eject. I get a prompt that says downloading and when all files and apps are transferred I turn off my new mac then turn it back on and nothing. I've done search after search and repeated this process 3 times and nothing. Am I doing something wrong? Please help.

Time Machine will not "overwrite". New back ups are added to what is there, without erasing.
Connect the Time Machine back up, double click on the icon and navigate through its contents - the back ups are chronological, so you just select the date then go through the contents just like on any other drive. You can select any files you want and drag and drop on the new Mac's desktop (or anywhere else).

  • How to transfer photos from Imac to Macbook Pro using firewire?

What is the best way to transfer photos from my Imac to Macbook Pro using firewire?

Put one of the computers in Target Disk mode by holding down the T key while your computer is starting. By doing this, the hard drive of the computer you put in Target Disk will appear as an external drive in the other computer, so just open a Finder window and choose the other computer's hard drive in the sidebar.
Then, just go to the folder where your pictures are and copy them to your computer or to the Mac in Target Disk mode, depending on the computer you put in Target Disk

    Unless he is able to
work on the college computers (Apple) for projects
and homework on campus he will surely need something
to work on at home. He will be a commuter student.
    Yes
Can anyone tell me if Apples are really superior to
    PCs in graphics?
For video and graphical work, Macs are generally considered to be the industry standard and what you would work on in the graphics industry.
I also would like to know if Apples
    are reliable--
I have used ten or more Macs in our office over the last five years and are still using them all today and all have worked fine.
how easy are they to install things
    like additional RAM, etc--
Depends on the model some are easier than others, the PowerMac was very very easy, others are more complex.
    how is Apples
    support---
Applecare has a good reputation and most people recommend Applecare.
how does the Apple OS compare to Windows???
It is not so much a situation of which is better they are different.
Personally as someone who uses both on a daily basis more and more I prefer using OS X.
I do understand that Windows has a lot of
    negatives--virus's --loopholes--etc.
Which is something which is less of an issue on the Mac.
Has anyone an idea if an Apple can be assembled at
    home??
    No
I would really like to save some money on an
Apple, if there is a way.
Buy a secondhand Mac, but for high-end graphical work you would need a decent Mac.
One thing that people often forget is how long Macs last.
I got my PowerMac in 2003 and it is still a really fast computer and I am expecting it to last another three years or more as my main computer.

  • Transfer playlist from Imac to macbook pro

Does anyone know how to transfer all your playlists from itunes on a imac to a macbook pro? Recently purchased a macbook pro and cant sync my iphone to the new macbook pro. It starts then stops any ideas

Did you copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to /Music/ on the new computer?
Or did you only copy the /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder then add it to iTunes? If so, do the step above.

  • How long does it take to transfer files from Windows to Macbook Pro

    Hi guys
I just got a macbook pro (not the one with retina display)
I have all of my files on my windows and just started to set up my mac using the windows transfer program, but it is taking a really long time. The estimate time remaining jumps between 30-35 hours. This is over Wi-Fi. I have read that it is faster using an Ethernet cable, I think I have one that is pluged into connecting both computers, but it isn't speeding anything up.
What should I do? I don't want to leave either computer on for such a long time. (is there anything I should put my Mac on so it doesn't overheat, its currently on a wood table).
Should I stop it? I dont want to ruin anything on the computer so soon. If so, how do I do it. I had already started to transfer files earlier today but accidently closed the Mac, which stopped the process and couldn't restart it again, so I turned it off since I couldn't find anything on the screen to stop it.
I have an external harddrive that was connected to my windows, would it be faster to hold the mac's power button, start the startup again and just connect the external harddrive?
    Please help. Thanks in advance.

Wi-Fi is slowest. Wi-fi must fight interference and other environmental challenges that cables don't have to worry about at all.
Cabled Ethernet would be much faster. If your Windows computer has Gigabit Ethernet, it could actually be faster than FireWire.

I would only abort if there is a safe way to (like a visible Cancel button), otherwise you may lose data.
Connecting the external hard drive to the Mac could work, but if the hard drive is formatted with the NTFS disk format, you must have extra software on your MacBook Pro that can read that. If the drive is formatted as FAT32, it should work since Macs can read (but not write to) that Windows disk format.

  • How to transfer files from imac to macbook air

I recently received my macbook air and I was trying to transfer iWork to my new macbook.
Typically, I have no problems in the transfer process when I have done this before from my iMac to my Powerbook. And now, with the Macbook Air, my iMac tells me that the device isn't connected to the Macbook Air....but it IS showing that it is discovered.
    Sounds very confusing, I know.
I just need to know how to transfer Pages to my Macbook Air from my iMac.
If anyone can help, PLEASE DO!
    Thanks!

  • Data Migration from iMac to MacBook Pro Issues

    Hello!
I purchased a MacBook Pro and immediately began the data transfer through the Migration Assistant. Twelve hours later, it is at a screen saying "canceling migration", which it has been stuck on for five hours. I shut down my MacBook Pro and the iMac, and attempted to start the process over again. It appears that the data in fact did transfer, so I skipped the step asking me to transfer my data. Now I am at the screen to create my account, and it will not let me choose my full name or account name (due to that account information already being transfered over). That is the only account I would like to use, not any new account. I am unsure how to get around this step, any advice?
    Thanks!

I just bought a MacBook Pro and am trying to use MA to migrate stuff from my iMac (Intel, OSX 10.4.11) to my MacBook Pro (Intel, OSX 10.6.3).
Problem is, every time I try ("from" iMac "to" MacBook Pro), my iMac IDs my MacBook Pro and asks for the passcode, I give it, it then asks for the passcode again, I give it again, then it churns away with the message that it's "looking for other computers". On and on and on and gets stuck in this mode.
I'm using ethernet between the two. Tried wireless also. Same issue. Downloaded the Migration & DVD/CD Sharing Update onto the iMac; it's already on the MacBook Pro. Same problem persists.
Any suggestions? (among the ten zillion firewire cables I have, none fits the MacBook Pro, so haven't tried firewire yet).
    Thanks.

  • When I try to migrate from imac to macbook pro my user account says this user needs attention before migrating. My e-mail does not migrate in the process. this never happened before i updated to Maverick

When I try to migrate from imac to macbook pro my user account says "this user needs attention before migrating". My e-mail does not migrate in the process. This never happened before I updated to Maverick. I have repaired user permissions but this not make any difference

Just a Follow-up - the migration went fine. The migration did not import Little Snitch, Flip4Mac and DivX, stating they were incompatible.  It also reported that Intego Back up Assistant has improper security setting (which I have not yet investigated).
I am encountering small problems.  Safari would not open embedded pdf documents and instead showed a black screen.  This was fixed with instructions found at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-browser-acrobat-xi.html and it now works fine.
Importing 17 years of old mail from Eudora to Apple Mail was time consuming. mostly because of the pre-migration preening i did, but using Eudora file cleaner before the migrtaion helped a lot.
I amy find some more glitches, but so far everything seems to be working.

What cable can I use to transfer data from a 2008 MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Pro with thunderbolt?

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.
