Make sure your iMac is on 10.6.8 or higher and your iTunes is up to date.  If it is, then restart your computer, open iTunes, then plug in your device.  If it still is not showing up, follow the steps listed here: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X

  • How to transfer files from mac to ipad without using itunes

how to transfer files from mac to ipad without using itunes ???
as i want to use my ipad for official use as well...please suggest..

well to be 100% technical, no you didn't but that aside, it good to know there are ways for people to transfer music into the default apps without iTunes, if they have a need.
I tend to use 3rd party apps for documents, like your mentioned iExplorer etc, which are handy.
I see from a search the two "apps" you mentioned are not iOS apps, which I had assumed, SyncPod and FreeSync are apps for your computer, that would explain their access to the default Music/Video apps.
I had wondered how Apple had allowed iOS apps in the store that could get around the sandboxing in iOS of apps.

my mac disk is full and i cant transfer files from Mac to USB. saying the format is not good, how can i change the format and what happened to the files i have on USB?

Once something similar happened to me. The external drives I had set up for FCP to use for some reason were not mounted, and FCP put all its render files on the main drive and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Go to applications, and control-click (and hold down) on your FCP icon; you should get a pop up menu that says "show package contents". Select that, select the "contents" folder, then the "mac OS" folder. See if your quicktime file is in there, or if you've got render files in the "render" folder or audio render files in the "audio render" folder that don't belong there.
That's where FCP sticks stuff when your documents FCP project folders are not available or when external drives you've selected aren't available.

  • How do I transfer files from mac with snow leopard to a new retina display mac

What is the easiest way to transfer files from my old mac(2008) snow leopard to my new retina display mac book pro?

Easiest? Well there is some sort of wireless transfer thing, but I hear it takes FOREVER like several days and it's glitchy.
The Retina doesn't have a Firewire port I believe, so Target Disk Mode is out, unless you have a adapter and I don't know how well that will work out. Cost another $30 for the adpatper I bet.
    The likely most easiest?
Run down to any computer or office store and pickup a powered external USB hard drive that's the same size or larger then the old Mac's boot drive.
Boot the old Mac and download Carbon Copy Cloner.
(or use the TimeMachine if it asks, but it takes a reallly long time and if there are problems, then it's harder to recover files from)
Format the external drive in Disk Utility with Partition: option GUID and OS X Extended Journaled (default setting)
Use CCC to clone OLD A boot drive to External Drive B, takes about a few hours depending how much stuff you have.
Hook up drive to new Mac, (either clone or TimeMachine drive)
Use the free Migration Assistant in your Application Utility folder to transfer over, but creates a new user account (you can later delete one)
Or if you haven't set up the new Mac yet, when you do set it up during that process, you can transfer from the External Drive B and it won't have the account you set the machine up with naturally just uses the ones from the clone or TimeMachine drive.
Once your fine and dandy on the new machine, then Disk Utility erase and use the external USB to create either a bootable clone with CCC or a TimeMachine drive for backup.
Since you need a backup drive anyway, this method is better and happens to be reliable and easy.

  • New to Mac....can transfer files from Toshiba to Mac. But can't transfer files from Mac to Toshiba??? Can anyone help please?

New Mac user......own a new iMac and iPad and still use a Toshiba Laptop. Can transfer files from Toshiba to iMac but can't transfer files other direction?

Are you doing these transfers over a Network connection, the systems are networked together over your Home LAN? Or are you doing it with an external drive?
If an external drive Mac OS X can READ Windows NTFS formatted drives but can NOT WRITE to them. So you can co[py files to the drive on your Win PC and READ them on the Mac but Mac OS X can not Write to that drive so you can't copy files from Mac to that drive.
For an external drive to work on both systems, be able to Read and Write from/to that drive, it has to be formatted either FAT32 or exFAT.

Do I save it as RTF or as PDF?  He has to be able to make comments on the paper after along the right side.  I can not ask him to download anything t make it easier for me. I should be the one doing it correctly. I just do not know how.  Can you please tell me how I should be saving my papers so that they do not change format when he opens them on his PC?
And I do recheck and open and repen my paper to check and recheck my margins before I submit it and all is fine on my end.

nnigel, Welcome to the discussion area!
I've been reading thru the discussions and yet to find a clear answer on how to transfer files from my external HD to time capsule.
If it is directly connected to your Mac via USB or FireWire, Time Machine will include it in the backup.
...but is it difficult to point the library to the music file on the Time Capsule?

please help mt to do this.

    Ok, try here: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/transfer-files-from-pc-to-mac/
If you transfer music you have purchased from iTunes, you will have to "Authorize" the XP machine. Just go to the iTunes Store, from the Menu Bar click Store/Authorize Computer.

  • How do i transfer files from mac to pc?

How do I transfer files/data (all my pictures) from my mac to a pc? My external hard drive (pc) can be read by my Mac, but cannot be written on.

So, I guess there is no easy way to transfer files from a mac to a pc??? I remember easily transferring my pc files to the mac, and there are a ton of websites with info on how to transfer from pc to mac. But Ihave found virtually nothing on mac to pc transfer. I'm beginning to think I will have to go out to purchase a new hard drive. Any recommendations on a good one?
There ia a very easy way to tranfer files from Mac to PC or PC to Mac. Very simple connect them to the same network (LAN), Log in to the other and select the files you want to copy an paste them to the other computer.
I do it all the time. From Mac to PC and PC to Mac.
No Problems at all. Much better then an external hard drive and moving it around. And No need to worry about drive format. Each OS takes care of that when files get copied over the network.

  • Error code -51 when I attempt to transfer files from Mac to PC over network

I just upgraded to Mavericks - I saw some threads that people are having the same problem. When I attempt to transfer files from my Windows 7 PC to my Mac laptop, it freezes, then I get an error code -51. No, it's not firewall, and no it's not sharing permissions in the PC. Help!!

Same here as well. MacBook Pro 13" laptop with OSX 10.9. Can transfer small files (e.g. Mp3s, MS Word Docs, PDFs etc) on the network to a server running Windows 2008 R2 server eg MP3 files....but transfering larger files eg TV shows or films produces a failure after about 1.5MB and I get the following error message:
"...The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -51)...."
I previously had a MacBook Air laptop with OSX 10.8 and did not have this problem at all. Also currently have a Mac Mini with OX 10.6 and that machice continues to play just fine with the same server.
So the issue must most likely be a problem specific to OSX 10.9...

  • HT201250 using time machine to transfer files from mac to mac

i just bought the new iMac 27inch.  My previous Mac was Mac OSX Version 10.6.8.  I want to transfer files from my old mac to my new mac.  I learned Migration Assistant does not support this transfer because my old Mac is too old.
I want to transfer photos that are on my old mac --- such as my itunes, photos that are in iPhoto and CS 5.0, and a few other files on desk top and in documents.
    What do i do?

What if you won't have both computers at the same time. In my situation I'm selling my machine and using the money to purchase a new machine. If I backup with time machine and then run migration assistant on the new machine can't I copy everything over to the new computer with time machine?

  • Transfer files from Mac HDD to Windows 8

    Hello,
I recently dropped my MBP 15" mid 2010 and the charging dock got bent, not allowing me to charge the computer anymore. It being 3 years old and wanting a computer with better performance and graphic card, I bought a Lenovo running Windows 8.
The MBP itself works fine, it just can't charge. I would like to retrieve the files on the hard drive to put them on my windows computer. The battery is currently depleted and my preference would be to transfer files without charging the battery. If thhat wasn't possible, I would look into finding a way to charge the battery or find a charged one (suggestions welcomed here)
    - I am intending to use a free-trial version of MacDrive Pro 9.0 to read the files, although I'm open to any suggestions of how to transfer files from the MBP to Windows 8.
    - I am ready to open the MBP and do what is needed (the warranty is voided at this point anyways)
    - The HDD is from Apple and is 500 GB (I was using about 300GB I think)
Please let me know if you need any more information.
    Thank you!
    Julian

    Hi Templeton,
Thanks for your answer. Is the external drive enclosure absolutely necessary? And will any 2.5" enclosure do if it is?
    Thanks,
    Julian

  • Transfer files from Windows-formatted iPhone 3G to Mac

Hi I am trying to copy the songs/videos on my iPhone 3G which I update with my Windows PC to my new Mac.
How can I do that and reformat my iPhone without having to delete all the songs on it? Is there an external program I could use by any chance, since iTunes is limited in that sense?
And I really don't feel like paying to do this so please don't recommend some random software to purchase. Thanks in advance!

In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer, and photos can be transferred to an iPhone from a single computer. When syncing iTunes content and transferring photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first. You can sync contacts, calendar events, and bookmarks with the supported applications on multiple computers.
ITunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content from an iPod or iPhone that was purchased from the iTunes store, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store only.
With your iPhone connected to your MBP and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
Before syncing contacts with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal on your MBP, enter one unique contact in the Address Book and one unique calendar event in iCal. Make these up if needed, which can be deleted later. If you have already entered some contacts and calendar events in the Address Book and iCal on your MBP, you can bypass this step. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing contacts and calendar events with the Address Book and iCal on your MBP, which you want to select.
