Transfer files from MacBook (won't start) to IMac

I have a black older Macbook that as of today, wont start up.  Im getting the folder with the ? blinking at me.
I wanted to connect my Macbook to my new IMac via Firewire and start the Macbook up holding down T to recover some important files, but the firewire connections are different.
I noticed today when I was working on my laptop that the hard disk space was getting low, around 3gb left.  The computer locked up while working, I went to restart and now its stuck.
Any suggestions on how to get files off the Macbook to transfer them over to my newer IMac?

You need a 400 to 800 (6 pin to 9 pin) FireWire cable. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_10?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field -keywords=400+to+800+firewire+cable&sprefix=400+to+800%2Celectronics%2C370
That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Have new MacBook Air and old MacBook. Can send file from Air to MacBook by Bluetooth but cannot transfer file from MacBook to Air.

Have new MacBook Air and old MacBook (2 1/2 years old). Can transfer files from Air to MacBook by Bluetooth but cannot transfer file from MacBook to Air. When I try, MacBook does not recognize Air. File transfer only goes in one direction. Any solution to this problem? Regards

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.

What cables do I need to transfer files from my pc to a new iMac with OS lion?

If they're both on the same network you can enable file sharing on both and transfer files through your LAN, you don't need any cables.

If you are connecting the two computers directly to each other with an ethernet cable, you need a special "crossover" cable to swap the send/receive pins so the data sent from one computer arrives on the "receive" pins on the other end of the cable, not on the "send" pins that you get with a straight cable.
Incorrect, you do not need a special crossover cable. Any cable will do.

The latest version of Migration Assistant is version 5 and should have been installed in you Utilities folder when you upgraded to version 10.8. Use the 10.8 version machine to migrate to and you should have no problems.

  • I'm thinking of  buying one of the new Imacs and am presently a PC user - how hard is it or how can I transfer files from my PC to a new IMac

I am thinking about purchasing a new IMac and presently use a PC.  I would like to find out how difficult it is to transfer files from the PC to the IMac or in more detail - just how is it done.  Many thanks for any responses.

There are several ways by which it can be done. There is a special Migration Assistant for transferring an entire user account from a PC to the Mac. You would have to establish a network connection between the two machines.
Transfer the files you want to an external USB hard drive from the PC then transfer from the external drive to the Mac.
Ask the Apple retailer if they will transfer your data to the new Mac at the time of purchase. You will need to bring the PC with you.

  • How do I transfer files from macbook to iMac?

can I transfer filels directly from macbook to imac or do I have to do it through dropbox or bluetooth?

Easiest and quickest way is to connect the two machines with an ethernet wire...they will automatically network with each other.
The hard drive of the MacBook should appear on the desktop of the iMac, open it, find the files you want to transfer and drag-and-drop to the appropriate folder of the iMac.

  • How to transfer files from macbook air to external harddrive?

    1) i really wan't to copy all my files(videos, pictures, music, documents, etc)from macbokk air to my buffalo external harddrive but i don't know how?..can you please help me..
    2) my brother use different apple id that we can't access anymore, maybe after transfering all my files i can re-format my mac but also i don't know how....
hope you can help me coz i can't transfer my files from my ipadmini and my iphone5 to my mac..

go to DISK UTILITY and verify what it says your HD is formatted as under the "ERASE" tab
HFS+ above is the "mac format"
Format (erase) it in "mac osx Extended journaled"
Finder > Go >  Utilities > DISK UTILITY
see from mine below, HD on left selected,   .......ERASE tab highlighted.... and middle right roughly, it says "MAC OSX EXTENDED JOURNALED"
thats the format,  but yours may be different of course
bottom right ERASE tab lets you erase/ FORMAT your external as you like (remember this erases all data ON THE HD!)
highlighted in RED   Erase.......format (middle) ...........erase ACTION to Erase/Format (bottom)
If you dont want / need to format your Buffalo box go to #2 >
#2   To show HD on desktop
go into FINDER at top then PREFERENCES  then GENERAL tab
then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
AFTER THIS YOU CAN DRAG AND DROP FILES AS YOU LIKE
Or you can use your buffalo as a Time Machine backup.
my brother use different apple id that we can't access anymore, maybe after transfering all my files i can re-format my mac but also i don't know how....

  • How to transfer files from MacBook Pro to a thumb drive?

When I try to do so I get this screen:
The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “Ronay Enterprises A” already exists.
The thumb drive was empty until I attempted to transfer a folder.

    Lex,
As mentioned before, I did install and ran Clam twice. I again eraced the stick (quick erace) and still 55 files remained so I'm doing a 7x erace now. It will be another 3 hrs until that 7x will be finished. The folder was from my Mac and it is clean according to Clam. My laptop is clean as well according to avira antivirus software.
All of this comes as a result of trying to move folders from my Mac to my laptop. My Mac sees both PCs but will not allow me to xfer files/folders. The PCs are linked via a router. My laptop PC and desk PC can exchange files/folders but I can't seem to get my Mac to exchange files/folders with my PCs. Thus I turned to the stick hoping I could make transfers via the stick. I'm also using Zone Alarm on both of my PCs.
Will the stick be reformated automatically when the 7x is finished?

  • Can you transfer files from Macbook Pro to iPad Air via USB ?

    Hi ,
Can you use that USB adapter to transfer photos / .pdf`s / .mp3`s and so forth ?
I have a MBP-R + MM , and would like to be able to use the newer iPad Air for veiwing photos as well as .pdf`s , I got the music part , just sync with iTunes.
    Many thanks !
    G.   

iTunes, when your iPad Air is plugged in via USB to your computer and selected in iTunes, has a tab for Books which can transfer your PDFs to iBooks.  It also has a tabs for Photos.
If you select the Apps tab and scroll down to the bottom of the apps list, you will see a section for Apps that can sync files between your computer and the App on your iPad Air.  So if you have an app that handles a specific file format you can use iTunes to sync that file between your computer and your iPad Air.
As has been mentioned above, besides iBooks, GoodReader is another well respected app that handles PDFs and you can transfer PDF files between your computer and GoodReader on the iPad Air via the Apps tab.

  • Transfer files from old Mac Pro to new iMac

I have a 2008 Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and just purchased a new iMac with Maverick. How do I transfer my files (iPhoto library, address book, documents, etc.)? Can I connect the two computers or must I download the files to an EHD and then import them to the new iMac? If I can connect them, what is the procedure?

iPhoto can see my old library (I can select it using "Swtich to Library...") but the photos are not showing -- I am getting an empty library with all the introductory "get started" info.
Try to open the copied library by double-clicking it in the Finder. iPhoto does obviously not open your selected library, but creates a new one.
How did you copy using the network? Are you signed into the new mac and copy as the user on your new mac? Or are you copying while being signed in on your old mac?
    iPhoto '08, Mac OS X (10.6.8), iPhoto 7.1.5 obsolete?
If your old library really still is iPhoto 7.1.5, run iPhoto Library Upgrader first:

  • Before I transfer files from my PC to the new imac should I load office for Mac and parallees? Will this mean I have to open the new account on my imac first and thus have two user accounts when I transfer the PC? I would prefer to only have one account.

IIt was in my mind to load office then transfer. After to load paralels and transfer my windows system. I have a new copy of office for Mac plus paralels PC to Mac transfer version 8. As this is my first mac (I have ipads and iphones) I am unsure of what to do. Also to confuse matters I use a windows laptop as my sync machine for the phones and ipads (i do have a cloud account with backup) can I transfer both machines to my new imac? I will have a 1tb fusion drive + 2tb time capsule although I only have less than 400GB of data on both machines. Hope this is not too confusing for everyone but I am looking forward to sorting this mess out by just using the one machine.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.
