Transfer files from old computer, use old hard drive?

I've just purchased new HP Pavilion p6-2120 Desktop.  I need to transfer files, programs, etc from my 6 year old Dell desktop.  I realize I can use Windows 7 transfer program with flash drive, transfer cable or external hard drive to move the files.
As another transfer method, can I take the old hard drive from the Dell desktop & install it in the new HP Pavilion?  Is the old hard drive (80GB serialATA, 7200rpm, DIM2,XPS2) compatible with the new HP where it will even work?
Since I'm not transfering that much is it best to just purchase a  Windows 7 transfer cable?

mikesimms,
Your theory is correct. If you want all the settings, email, documents, photo's, music, and other data files, use either the Windows Easy Transfer program. It will accept an external device or use the transfer cable.
If you want only the documents, photo's, music, and other data files then you could add the XP drive to the system (temporarily use the p6-2120's DVD drive cabling). You can copy files to the new folders.

I have to install Photoshop CS4 extended on a new computer from a disk because my old computer had a hard drive crash.  There is no serial number on the back of the case.  How can I obtain a usable serial number?

    Find your serial number quickly
You can activate software without following up and registering it... at least that was the case in the past.  The serial number is normally located on the disc case or a box inside the main box.  If you did not purchase the disc from Adobe then it is possible you would have dealt with a redemption code, in which case it would have been up to you to keep a record of the serial number, especially if you did not follow up and register the software.

How can I transfer files from my computer to my I Pad?

Try a conduit such as Dropbox.
Goodreader or Documents to Go also have helper apps that allow transfers.
Goodreader is particularly good in that it has a integal file tree and you can mount your computers harddrive and navigate directly on your ipad.
Use the open with to view/move files into other apps.

  • Can't transfer files from Apple computer to I Pad

Trying to transfer files from my computer to my I Pad (II)
There is No 'OPEN' tab to click, as suggested in the help menu.
The application that is housing the files is 'NUMBERS'.
All up to date and working.
    Any thaughts?
    Thank you

I think that you are trying to use File Sharing with Numbers on the iPad. I assume that you have the Numbers application on the iPad and on the Mac.
Connect your iPad to the Mac with the cable and launch iTunes, if it doesn't launch on its own.
Click on the iPad name under Devices in the left sidebar. If you don't see the sidebar go to View>Show Sidebar from the iTunes menu at the top of the screen or you can use the keyboard - COMMAND+OPTION+S.
Then click on the Apps Tab at the top of the iTunes window on the right.
Scroll down to File Sharing Apps.
Click on Numbers in that list.
Drag any Numbers file from the desktop to the Documents Window on the right.
    Launch Numbers on the iPad.
Tap on the + sign in the upper left corner to add a file.
    Tap on Copy from iTunes
A window will pop up with all of the files that you dragged into the Documents window.
Tap the file that you want to add to numbers.
    You can read more here.

  • Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

What are these files you are trying to copy over?
If they are program specific and there is no program on a Mac to read them then you'll have to find either a Mac version of that program or one that does the same thing and can read those files.
The file extension should not change just because you connect a NTFS formatted drive to a Mac computer. A Word Document is still a .doc/.docx ad the same for all other office type programs. Music files with an extension of .MP3, or whatever, should read the same on both system. Same goes for all other files like images with a .JPG extension.
    Yes I would network them.
I would not use Migration Assistant. There is nothing on your Windows PC that can be used on the Mac other than your personal data files. No programs or settings can be carried over from Windows to OS X.

Also, when I view the files from the external hard drive, they show up as .nbz and are not recognized by any program on the Mac. Should I just abandon the hard drive option and start sharing files through the LAN approach?

  • How do you transfer movies from macbook to a external hard drive it won't recognise

how do i transfer movies from macbook to a external hard drive? it just wont recognize

So your MacBook Pro is a 2012 model (I'm assuming since you only bought it a week ago!)?
There are some known issues with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 models where they do not recognize USB external drives. This tech note may be of some help - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Some people that are using pre-release versions of Mountain Lion, to be released in the next couple of weeks, have written here that their USB 3.0 port problems are 'fixed' with the new version of OS X 10.8.
Try the Apple FAQ first and if that doesn't solve your problem, you may have to wait a couple of weeks to see if 10.8 does.

  • Movie song files from my computer to external hard disk

I want to move all of the songs from my computer's hard disk to an external hard disk. Can you please tell me all the steps I need to follow to do this. Once the switch is made, I want to delete all song files from my computer to free up disk space. How can I do this? Finally...if I transfer songs from my computer to an external hard disk and then to another computer, is any of the song quality lost with the two switches?? Thanks!

  • How do i transfer files from my computer to my imac, how to i transfer files from my computer to my imac

how do i transfer files from my pc to imac

I don't have any experience in this directly (I migrated to a Mac many years ago) but I suggest the following articles are of most use to you:
If your iMac has OS X 10.7 installed on it then you can use the Migration Assistant for PC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796) as long as both the iMac and your PC are on the same network.
If your iMac has an older version of OS X installed on it then the process is more manual and is explained here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518
    I hope that's helpful.

  • Question about transfering files from FAT32 Western Digital Ext Hard Drive

I have 2 320GB External Hard Drives that I have been using for my current Windows XP PC. Today I just purchased my first Mac, the iMac and was concerned about using the Hard Drives on my Mac. I have thousands of very important files on both drives and want to make sure they are safe. I want to use the drives as backup for my iMac like I have done for my Windows PC. Will this be a problem? and what precautions should I take when using my Western Digital Hard Drive on my new Mac?

    Starnerg wrote:
I intend to use it as a backup. Im not goint to be using the Windows computer anymore. I plan on copying over GB's worth of folders. Im not sure what "TM" is...
TM is TimeMachine, the built-in backup engine in Leopard. It requires HFS+ format.
If you no longer intend to use Windows, I would suggest reformatting the drives to HFS+, the standard Mac FileSystem, but of course you have to backup the data to a third drive before reformatting which will destroy all data on the drives.
If you format the third drive HFS+ then when you copy the files from the FAT32 drive you save an operation.

The simplest method would be to drag & drop the files you want to move to the external drive using the Finder. Just open both the source and destination locations in separate Finder windows.
