Transfer Files from Old MacBook to New MacBook Pro

I'm just about to take delivery of a new macbook pro which will have Lion OS on it.
My present MacBook is running 10.6.8 and I have a Time Capsule on my network which contains backups of this MacBook.
Is there a procedure to folow which will allow me to add the new MacBook Pro onto the network and then transfer over all my ITunes Libray , Photos, contacts, Emails, Vidoes, etc?

  • Transfer files from my IMac to new MacBook without firewire?

What is the best way to transfer files from my Imac as listed to a new MacBook. I understand there is no firewire connectivity. I would like to migrate all photos, music, and settings.

I’m sure that specific instructions come with the machine, but essentially:
Use Migration Assistant do do this. You can connect the Macs with Ethernet or even Wirelessly.

  • How to transfer files from old iMac to new iMac without transferring everything.

I just got a new iMac and would like to transfer files from my old iMac.  I don't want to transfer everything from the old iMac.  I just want the files, iTunes library, iPhoto library, etc.  I don't want to transfer applications and settings.  I was told in the Apple store that if I transferred my files using system setup then my new computer would look just like my old one.  I'd rather start out fresh with the new one and just bring in the files I need.  Is there a tool that allows you to customize what you transfer over from old to new?  Thanks for your help!!

Carbon Copy Cloner might be the correct tool. It lets you pick and choose what to clone.
    http://www.bombich.com/ccc_features.html
install CCC on the old Mac,
connect the Macs with an ethernet cable,
enable file sharing on both Macs,
use "connect to server" (in Go menu) to mount the new Mac's drive on the old Mac.
    run CCC.

  • How to transfer files from old iMac to new iMac

What is the easiest way to transfer files from my current iMac (intel) to my new iMac..which be arriving this week?
    Thanks

Get a Firewire cable to run between your old iMac and the new one. Boot the old iMac into Target Disk Mode. Boot the new computer for the first time. You will find yourself in the Setup Assistant. You will have an option to transfer files from another drive or Mac. Choose that option to transfer your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and network preferences. You will opt to transfer from your old iMac's hard drive which should appear as an alternative source.

  • How do i transfer files from old ipad to new ipad if it has already been activated as new?

I purchased a new ipad and need to transfer files from my old ipad.  However, it has already been set up as new and all support suggestions I have found have been for choosing the restore option in the set-up stage.  How do I do it now that it has been activated?

It depends on if you even have a backup. If you had a backup, I don't suppose that you would have to ask how to restore from it.
Did you backup your old iPad? If you so, did you backup with iTunes or iCloud? This explains how to backup and how to restore from a backup, but once again, if you don't have that backup any longer, this will not work.

  • I followed the instructions to copy and paste ALL profile files from old PowerBook to new MacBook Pro, so why are no bookmarks now shown in Firefox?

    From the page
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile#w_copying-files-between-profile-folders
After dragging and dropping the profile folder from the old PowerBook to the new MacBook Pro, I followed the copy/paste instructions, apparently successfully, to replace all the files in the latter with all the files in the former -- essentially to transfer my Firefox browser functionality from the old computer to the new. However, on starting Firefox, I have ZERO bookmarks (in other words, Firefox looks like it did when I downloaded and installed it a couple days ago). One note: When I performed the operation, I had used the new version of Firefox almost not at all, yet in the course of copying and pasting I had to permit replacement of HUNDREDS of bookmark files with identical names. How could THIS be?!?

It is normally best to only restore personal data that you really need (bookmarks, passwords, etc.) and not a full profile folder.
The xxxx in the name of the JSON backup (bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx_$$$$.jsonlz4) denotes the number of bookmarks in the file and a file hash ($$$$) is appended to check if it is necessary to save a new backup, so only if there is a different hash because bookmarks were modified then a new backup is created.
If you remove the newer backups that were created before you restored the backup and only leave the bookmark backups from the saved profile then Firefox should rebuild the bookmarks when you remove all the places files.

  • Transfer files from PowerBook G4 to new MacBook Pro 13"

I need to transfer my photo library from my PowerBook G4 to a new MacBook Pro 13". Migration Assistant will not work! What FireWire cable do I need? I believe the old PowerBook is a 6pin. The MacBook pro FireWire port is about half the size of the 6pin and is rounded at the bottom.

400 to 800. Look at the iBook port and look at the MBP port. You could also copy the iPhoto Library onto a USB depending upon the size or burn a DVD depending upon the size. Mentioned because afterward you may not have any need for that $30 cable but a USB flash drive is very useable afterward.

  • Transfer files from old iMac to new

My 2008 iMac has a broken video card and my display is not functioning.  I purchased a new iMac 2014.  I want to transfer my files from the old iMac to the new.  I've attempted target disk mode using migration assistant via firewire/thunderbolt adapter to no avail.  I know the cable is functioning b/c i've attempted the migration assistant with my macbook pro and it is able to locate it.
If I uninstall the hard drive, how do I connect the hard drive directly to my new iMac?

  • Can't transfer files from old computer to new

Hello, Bought a new MacBook Pro and have old pictures, files, apps and fonts on an old Powerbook.  Migration utility allows me to move entire files over, but would like to move only specific files. I remember once opening an old computer much like a hard drive and drag and dropping what I wanted. Any ideas.
    Thanks,
    Jamie Clements

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Can someone help me transfer files from old apple to new

hi i recently got a new (used) laptop. To bring files from my old g4 to my new laptop can i create a network between the two with just cord?
    ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi benbev welcom to the posts,
Well if it is a mac to mac transfer you can simply get a firwire cable and follow the on scrren instuctions in the installation window.
If it is between a pc and mac then make a shared folder on the pc and connect the ethernet cable between the two. Then connect to the shared folder via go, connect to server, smb://(pc computer name)

  • Moving files from old emac to new MacBook Pro

Tomorrow we are supposed to receive our new 15" MacBook Pro w 4gb ram and 320 gb hard drive loaded with iWork. I have an older eMac 720 mh with files stored on it and to Lacie firewire external drives. Someone told me it was easy to move all files (or those I want to move) onto the new wireless MacBook Pro. Does the new computer offer this when you are setting it up or is there software to do this? Do I have to hook them together hardwired or simple connect the new laptop wirelessly to my home network (through my Belkin wireless router). I have an older hpDeskjet 5550 printer connected to my eMac, can I reasonably expect to be able to print through it using the wireless router and home LAN network? Networks and routers are a mistery to me but somehow have managed to install both. My Belkin N+ wireless router has a USB port on the back to facilitate network file storage and sharing has anyone tried this sucessfully?

If your files are backed up to an external drive then connect the drive to the new computer and transfer your files. Here's the basics of what you can transfer:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    For FireFox:
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
    /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist

  • Need to transfer files from iBook G4 To New Macbook Pro 13" HELP!

My iBook G4 has a firewire 400 port, whereas the Macbook Pro has an 800 port. I am about to order a cable so that I can transfer my files via migration assistant, but just want to double check here to see if it will work. (I am getting VERY confused about all this 6 pin 9 pin business!) Could someone please enlighten me? As far as i know FW 400 ports are 6 pin and 800 ones are 9 pin?
Anyway here is the cable i am considering buying:

I wouldn't use migration assistant from a PPC to an intel Mac. See here:

  • Just Migrated Files from Old Mac to New MacBook Pro and Can't Open PDF File

Does this computer come with Adobe reader pre-installed or do I need to down-load it from Adobe?
    Thank you.

If you want Adobe Reader, you'll need to download it. Even if it's already present on your hard drive, you'll want to have the latest version, and the preinstalled version (if there is one) probably isn't it.
