Transfer files from PC without creating a new user

Is it possible to use the Migration Assistant to transfer files (documents and photos) from a PC to my new MacBook WITHOUT creating a new user? And why the frick does the Setup Assistant not warn you on initial startup that if you do not transfer files then - you can only do it by creating a seperate user. This should be simple. Transfer files. sounds easy.

It is user friendly - that's why it asks you to migrate all of your info in the very beginning during the setup of your new Mac.
Migration Assistant creates a new user after it does its job. There's no way around that.
You can either manually move the files over from your PC into the Mac or you can use MA, let it create a new user and then share those files between the new user and your current user. When you're done you can then delete the newly (and now empty) migrated user. You cannot migrate files from another computer and have them placed into your current user.

  • Best way to transfer files from old Macbook Pro to new one?

I just got a new Macbook Pro from Apple...YEEEEAAAHHHH!
    So....
What's the best way to transfer files from old Macbook Pro to new one?  I know Migration assistant, but is there a recommended way?  I don't want to put do a system restore or transfer everything from the old laptop, but I do want to move important things like photos, music, documents and such over.  Any suggestions on best way to do this?
Another question, perhaps subquestion.  If I have, say, an older version of iPhoto but a newer version of one on my new Macbook Pro, will it still transfer photos no problem?
Just looking for hints from the experts so this puppy is set up in the best way possible.

    Just one comment on this:
‘If I have, say, an older version of iPhoto but a newer version of one on my new Macbook Pro, will it still transfer photos no problem?’
the problems are ALWAYS in the reverse way, when you have the newest (or a newer) version of a given app, and wish to transfer its library to an older version.
Otherwise, see the link to Pondini.
I have been using Martin Jahn’s iBackup, with which I have become accustomed and works fine. It also makes daily backups. Its advantage over other apps is that you may add whatever you wish to save, beside its default settings (which you may delete or cancel, of course, even if not recommended); it also has a friendly interface and easily customizable. Of course, this is a personal view, you may try other methods as well, or other backup apps. All are good if you are satisfied and correspond to your needs.

What cables do I need to transfer files from my pc to a new iMac with OS lion?

If they're both on the same network you can enable file sharing on both and transfer files through your LAN, you don't need any cables.

  • I'm thinking of  buying one of the new Imacs and am presently a PC user - how hard is it or how can I transfer files from my PC to a new IMac

I am thinking about purchasing a new IMac and presently use a PC.  I would like to find out how difficult it is to transfer files from the PC to the IMac or in more detail - just how is it done.  Many thanks for any responses.

There are several ways by which it can be done. There is a special Migration Assistant for transferring an entire user account from a PC to the Mac. You would have to establish a network connection between the two machines.
Transfer the files you want to an external USB hard drive from the PC then transfer from the external drive to the Mac.
Ask the Apple retailer if they will transfer your data to the new Mac at the time of purchase. You will need to bring the PC with you.

  • How to Transfer Files from Your Ipod to a New Computer when You Don't Have the Old One?

My old computer crashed and I have a new one now, how do I transfer the files from my ipod to my new computer itunes program???

I am having the same problem.  My iPod classic has all of the music on it and I need to get it into iTunes.  Unfortunately, I had not had the computer very long and it did crash before I was able to back anything up.

  • Can't transfer files from my PC to my new Mac over our wireless network

I have a Linksys WRT54G router connected to a cable modem, which is connected to a desktop PC. I have a Dell laptop connected to the internet wirelessly, and my MacBook Pro is also connected to the internet wirelessly. No problem there, the internet works on both.
However, I'm trying to transfer my files from the Dell to my new MacBook, and I get to the point where it asks for my username and password. I've typed in everything I can think of, and the Mac gives me Error -43, 'something or other is not found'.
I don't remember ever assigning myself a username or password when I set up the wireless network. I've had no problem connecting to the Internet with the Dell laptop, but have never been able to share files or a printer with the desktop PC to which the router is connected.
    What's going on here?

That would be the username & password of the user account on the Mac.

  • What is the best way to transfer files from Windows XP to a new MacBook Pro?

I am about to make the switch from PC to Mac, but I am not completely sure how I should transfer all of my old files (Word docs, PowerPoints, Excel Sheets, pictures, etc.) over to the new Mac. I read this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796, and it said to download Windows Migration Assistant. It says that a new user account will be created on the Mac containing all of the transferred material. I assume that I can just pull stuff from the newly created account and put it on the main or administrative account? Also, I assume that I can delete the created account after I get everything that I want off of it, but I am new to the whole Mac thing and assuming never gets anyone anywhere. One more thing, I do not want to transfer over my email accounts from Outlook because there is some kind of problem with the way they are set up. I want to just start them completely over in Mail. The article says that the program will automatically transfer over email accounts. Is there a way to avoid that or just transfer stuff manually? If anyone has transferred files this way before, I would really appreciate any insight you can give me. Thanks!

Best way would be NOT to use any sort of migration program, just copy the files over and place them in the same Music, Pictures, Documents folders on the Mac like it is on Windows.
All you need a external USB drive you can pick up at any office or computer store, I would advise powered and either the same size or larger (not too big) than your boot drive on the Mac. So later you can make a clone of OS X, as there is NO system restore on a Mac.
Most drives are formatted MBR with a FAT32 (named "MSDOS" in Apple's Disk Utility) and can be read on a Mac just as easily.
If for some reason your external drive has been already formatted by Windows into NTFS format, then a Mac can't read it without paying for more software and having to hassle with updates, it not working etc. So format the external drive FAT (FAT32) or even exFAT on the PC first (exFAT needs a free download from Microsoft on XP machines)
When you connect the drive, simply drag and drop your files right into the same folders, this way you can control what comes over and what stays.
If you want a free program that can open your Office files without having to pay for OfficeMac, then the free LibreOffice is available and works great.

  • How do I transfer files from old computer to the new one

I have bought the desktop and used migration asiitant to transfer files but nothing came through, how do i transfer files

Your best option of migrating was when your turned on the new computer for the first time using Setup Assistant. Part of SA is it asks if you are migrating from another Mac, you apparently passed that and missed that opportunity. You then must have used Migration Assistant which is similar to SA but with one critical difference. Migration Assistant migrates everything to a new user account whereas SA would not. Log out of your existing account and into the new account and you will find your stuff. If you want to start over (highly recommended) you can. You will need to carefully read Lion Setup Assistant tips beginning where he discusses Second Chance.... This will take some time but in the long run make your migration more seamless.

Make sure the old iPad is synched using iTunes (or iCloud).
Then sync the new iPad using the same Apple ID, and iTunes (or iCloud).

  • Macbook screen cracked. How to transfer files from old hard drive to new computer?

I had a 13" white macbook, but the screen cracked, and the computer wouldn't work anymore. I took it to be fixed, but they weren't able to fix it, so they gave me a macbook pro. I asked them to try and transfer the files from my old macbook to the old one, but they said that they couldn't, and gave my the hard drive and said I could have someone else try to fix it for me. How do I connect the old hard drive to my new macbook to see if I can get the files off of it? I don't have the old computer anymore, just the hard drive itself. Thanks!

Sorry, I don't understand all of this stuff. Do I have to buy a certain one for Mac? Or will any enclosure work?  Would this one do what I need? http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/startech-startech-external-hard-drive-enclos ure-with-integrated-usb-cable-sat2510scb-sat2510scb/10192449.aspx?path=9e9804b6f 287edbfe4f83d36c2a6aa71en02

  • How do I transfer files from my iPod to my new computer when most of my content is ripped from discs, not purchased from iTunes?

All of the topics I've read that discuss transferring files from an old iPod, to a new computer don't address the issue of the files NOT being purchased from iTunes. My windows vista computer died, and I downloaded the iTunes software onto my new 8.1 computer, but my "classic", with 90G of content won't sync with the new iTunes. Yes, I have authorized the new computer. Of course, I had no chance to download my library from my old computer, to my new, because the old one's dead. It seems that you aren't allowed to transfer your entire library,  just merch from iTunes. I feel there must be a work around, and Apple's just making it difficult for some reason. I'd hate to think I have to go through the time comsuming task of reloading thousands of CDs to my new computer. Any help out there? I would think this scenario happens all the time.

Unfortunately, it does happen all the time.
It's always been a sensible idea to maintain a backup of your iTunes Library on something like an external hard drive. iTunes does not allow for transfer from the iPod to iTunes, in the main, to prevent illegal copying of music.
I believe a programme such as Yamipod will allow you to copy from an iPod to iTunes, although I've never tried it.

  • How do i transfer files from old Desktop PC to new Satellite L750?

Hi everyone - Newbie to this site so be gentle with me please .
Specifically I want to ask: (a) Will the MS Word 7 Starter that is already fitted to my Toshiba laptop accept many files from my old Desk Top, mostly Word documents? What sort of capacity has the Starter? What is the best device to use - a portable harddrive? USB? Disks?
    and
    (b) How do I retrieve my Bing Toolbar? Currently I do not have a tool bar that shows file,new,cut/paste at all. I do have a search space for Bing on my desktop, but nothing else except one toolbar at the top where I type in addresses that is on the far top righthand side with Home, Star and a Cog. Above that there isjust a minimise, maximise and cross for close.
    Thanks so much
    rr

Dont worry about Office documents. New version can read old documents.
About data transfer I can also say that easiest way for data transfer or data back-up is external HDD. You can buy small and mobile 2,5 external HDD and use it for data back-up and data transfer if you have big amount of different data.
If you have to copy less than 8GB you can use small USB stick. They are not expensive and for few Euros you can buy 8GB USB stick.
Last week I bought SanDisc 8GB USB stick for 8 Euros.
About Bing toolbar I cannot say much because I dont use it.

  • Transfer files from old Mac Pro to new iMac

I have a 2008 Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and just purchased a new iMac with Maverick. How do I transfer my files (iPhoto library, address book, documents, etc.)? Can I connect the two computers or must I download the files to an EHD and then import them to the new iMac? If I can connect them, what is the procedure?

iPhoto can see my old library (I can select it using "Swtich to Library...") but the photos are not showing -- I am getting an empty library with all the introductory "get started" info.
Try to open the copied library by double-clicking it in the Finder. iPhoto does obviously not open your selected library, but creates a new one.
How did you copy using the network? Are you signed into the new mac and copy as the user on your new mac? Or are you copying while being signed in on your old mac?
    iPhoto '08, Mac OS X (10.6.8), iPhoto 7.1.5 obsolete?
If your old library really still is iPhoto 7.1.5, run iPhoto Library Upgrader first:
