I'm trying to import quicken for windows data (as I was instructed as .qxf file) via usb to imac. I connected usb but nothing happens and I can't find anything in finder to give me a clue. Am new to imac

Select it in the Finder's sidebar or open it from the desktop and drag the files over. If you don't see it, check the settings in the Finder's preferences.

Your new MacBookPro has Mac OS X Lion v10.7.x installed on an Intel processor and cannot open or read ClarisWorks files as such.
However, you may be able to reformat to RTF > AppleWorks: Document Recovery Techniques
The issue is going to be migrating files since you can't use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac

Are you doing these transfers over a Network connection, the systems are networked together over your Home LAN? Or are you doing it with an external drive?
If an external drive Mac OS X can READ Windows NTFS formatted drives but can NOT WRITE to them. So you can co[py files to the drive on your Win PC and READ them on the Mac but Mac OS X can not Write to that drive so you can't copy files from Mac to that drive.
For an external drive to work on both systems, be able to Read and Write from/to that drive, it has to be formatted either FAT32 or exFAT.

Well you only really have a choice of Seagate and Western Digital now, however if you buy Hitachi external drive, even though WD owns them, it should be the best drive of all, certainly better than Segate + Maxor.

External drives are wired, but you can hook them to a router and the router acts as the wireless data transfer to the hard drive.

IGNORE the last post: he thought you are using Lion or Mountain Lion.
Since you are using Snow Leopard, you need to install Rosetta. It can be found on your Snow Leopard Install DVD in the Options section.
Once installed all should be well again.
Also, if your computer is connected to the internet when the Dialog Box about PowerPC applications comes up, it MIGHT allow you to download Rosetta from the internet. There has been some discussion that Apple has discontined internet download of Rosetta into Snow Leopard.
Someone else will have to address your lost files problem.

Why can't I transfer files from usb internal hdd on my mac?

I am trying to restore a back-up (not via time-machine) from an external HDD dock, I've put an internal HDD in there.
I'm constantley confronted with this error: "The finder can’t complete the operation because some data in "8A5A0887.MOV" can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)".
I've tried to check the do not read/write radio button, but it's not even on. I'm afraid my disk is broken but I need those files really bad. Any ideas on transfering the files from the HDD?

I get the that I copy files from the PC to the external drive and then copy to mac. What I do not know is what format does the external drive need to be? FAT32 is somewhat limiting.

I don't do Windows, but Macs can read & write ExFAT, too.
If the PC has an app that will format & write any variant of Mac OS Extended, those are native to Macs.
You can also transfer via network, if that's convenient. See the Use a Network Connection section under Manually Migrating in Switch Basics: Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac.

Hands4 has posted a link to an article about Apple's PC migration assistant. Take a good look at the article. It is a novice friendly way to transfer your stuff - documents, pictures, music, contacts, and email from the PC to your Mac. I strongly recommend that if you choose this method that you use it the very first time you start up your Mac.
If you aren't concerned about keeping your mail and contacts it is also easy just to use an external drive or a flash drive to copy stuff from one computer to the other. Plotinus refers to formating the drive in a way that both Windows and Mac OS can read/write to it but no matter how the drive is formatted the Mac will be able to copy the files from it.
When my sister finally dumped Windows she was using Google Mail so all her contacts and email info was on Google. That made it easy for her to move into her new Mac with just a 32GB flash drive. Also, since she was using iTunes with her iPhone already most of her music could be redownloaded to the Mac which also made things a bit easier for her.

Hello I have a MacBook Pro laptop that doesn't boot and stops at the Apple logo in grey.
I ready about Target Mode and wen't bought a Firewire cable, connected to another MacBook Pro but the hard drive doesn't show up on the Go/Computer or the Disk Utility either.
Also I noticed that when the MacBook Pro is in Target mode it shows the Firewire logo jumping around the screen but to the left of it also is something that looks like electrical/power symbol, don't know if that matters. I tried to plug in the target computer to power and nothing changes, then tried to leave it unpluged from power and plug in the power to host but nothing happens. Both are almost full power on battery.
Basically I need a way to get the files off. Thanks.

After setting up a new user on my Air, can I still access Setup Assistant to transfer files from my old Mac?

Only after setting up my user account on my new Air do I find out about Setup Assistant vs Migration Assistant. Since, I have tried Migration Assistant - via wireless - twice, to no avail. Both computers (new Mac and old) just stay busy looking for another computer on my network. All I really want to do is move/copy everything from my old Mac to the new Air. Suggestions? Miracles? You can do it wirelessly, but that will take some time... you could also purchase a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter or a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. That would certainly be faster. You should be able to purchase either adapter at your local Apple Store or at the online Apple Store.

What's the easiest way to transfer files from an old Mac to a new one?

Alright, when I originally purchased my Macbook Pro in 2006 - I had no intentions on replacing for many, many years to come. However, purchased the 17", to have more screen space for design, and that career sort of fell through. I don't have a need for such a large display, and it gets very heavy when carrying it around. I've recently decided to opt for the 13" Macbook. Now my question is, what is the easiest, fastest, and safest was to transfer the files that I do want, from the old to the new? I considered buying an external hard-drive? And for that matter, once I do get everything transferred - does Mac offer anything where I can basically set the old on back to factory defaults?
Help is much appreciated.

If you have a High-speed connection, the easiest & fastest way is through AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) or any IM that has file transfers.
iChat has the same ability of transferring large files as AIM.
