Transfer from an ibook

i just got a new macbook- and in the set up i did the transfer from my ibook in target disk mode... on restart after it was 'complete' - the macbook said some data couldn't be transfered because the files were too large... so i restarted the ibook in target mode again to manually copy my 'home' folder as that was what didn't transfer (music, photos, documents, etc..) about 9gb into the 36gb transfer, i got an error saying there werent sufficient privliges for certain files, or that certain files were locked- something to that effect.
has anyone else run into this? any ideas? i want my main user folder from my ibook to be the main user folder on the new macbook.
thanks!

ibook g4 / imac g4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Excellent- Thats a great idea. Thanks so much..
One of the main reasons I wanted the 'merge' to works- was so that I didn't lose all my prefs. (bookmarks, ichat and other software set ups) is this fixed by copying the library? or is it more difficult?
Also- The one thing that did transfer over correctly was my applications but on a lot of them there is a duplicate of the app that says from old mac... is this actually a copy? should i delete it all and re-install?
Thanks so much!

  • How to transfer from Old ibook to new ML iMac

Hello, looking for some help with an installation problem.
I'm in the process of trying to [help my daughter] transfer relevant files from an old (2004?) iBook running 10.5.8 to a new 21" iMac running Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Using ethernet as iBook has firewire but iMac only has Thunderbolt.
Unfortunately the iMac was "admired/played with" a few times before trying to transfer the files so the only option is/was Migration Assistant.
Initially all seemed fine, but just as the processed was almost complete, - the transfer hung and the time to completion increased from seconds to minutes to hours. Ended by manually shut down.
I believe we have three options:
    1) Erase hard drive, do a re-install using Mountain Lion's built in reinstallation facility (We do not have back-up yet)
Then use set-up assistant on first boot-up to transfer files/apps etc.  Have not yet added any data/files so no loss if we erase the HD.
    2) Try Migration assistant  again
    3) I assume most (all?) of the old apps will not run on the new iMac, so there is no point in transfering them.
Instead I wonder about just copying over the important files, ie Address book files, Safari/iTunes/ etc etc
Any advice suggestions would be appreciated

  • I just bought an iMac, trying to transfer from my ibook pre intel 10.5.8 - how can i access my excel, word and other old apps?

I bought a new IMac and a new TIme Capsule. The old compter - pre Intel Ibook running 10.5.8 is in the process of backing up. I transfered my apps and find I cannot acces any of my MS Office data, or my Quicken. Lots of stuff I really need there. Gotta be a way to use my old apps, all this data can't just be gone. HELP!

all this data can't just be gone
The data should be fine. But you will need to upgrade the Apps to open the files. For example, MS Office 2004 does not run in the newer OS. You will need to upgrade to MS Office 2008, or later version. The new version will open the older files.
This is true for many Apps. This site has a compatibility table:

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • How do I transfer books in iBooks from my iPad to my computer?

My old laptop died and in the intrum of acquiring a new one, I add many books to my iBooks library.  I know how to load my purchases from the iBooks store, but I have other providers of ebooks and wasn't able to figure out how to back them up on my new laptop.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Can't transfer photo files from old iBook to Mac Pro

When I travel, I upload my photos using a card reader onto my iBook (1.2Hz, 762 RAM). At home, when I try to transfer them to my Mac Pro Quad (2.66Hz, 3Gb RAM) the transfer always starts OK (a number of files transfer) but then stalls out on a particular file. If I go back to my iBook and remove the "stalled" file, then try the transfer, it starts OK and then stalls on a new file, further "down the list".
So I basically can't transfer the files. Curiously, I have tried transfering the files from my iBook to a CF card and the same thing happens, so it seems the issue is with the iBook. Why would it be an issue only in one direction, ie, no problem uploading the files onto the iBook from my CF card reader? Could this be a memory issue? Any thoughts or suggestions?? Thanks.

I suspect a bad HD in your iBook. Pretty much anything that involved stalling and HDs means that.

  • HELP WITH TRANSFER FROM IBOOK G4 TO NEW INTEL MAC

    HI
I just got a new intel mac and want to transfer all my stuff from my ibook G4 ... I tried the migration assistant, I plugged in the fire wire and turned on my ibook whilst pressing the T down. I get the firewire icon on my old machine but the new one still says 'waiting for old machine to restart' It just wont do anything when it gets to that point.
I dont think I'm doing anything wrong but the thing is gettting me aggravated to say the least.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Karen can't help there but wanted to warn you.
I did the same thing--iBook G4 to intel iMac, did a "transfer all my stuff" and had problems. At least one G4 program caused my iMac to crash at start-up (it was a special anti-virus program). Also some messy things like the iMac though it was on a wireless network after the copy (like my iBook was) when it was, in fact, on a wired internet connection (it still worked but I got errors in the console log). Just messy.
Once you get your problem sorted out I'd be careful about which programs I transfered over.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes library from my iBook to my MacBook Pro?

I have just bought a 17" MacBook Pro nd want to transfer my iTunes library from my iBook. (lots and lots of songs) I did not have access to my iBook when I first authorised the MB and later tried to use the migration assistant in Tiger.
Although it seemed to work I could not find my iTunes library and it did not transfer. All the settings on the iBook should have allowed me to do this.
Any suggestions, other than start from scratch installing the track?
    Thanks
    TT

You can link the two laptops together with either Airport or Ethernet and get really fast transfer speeds without wasting time transferring everything to an external HD first. After the physical connection, set it up in the Network pane of your System Preferences. Alternately, you can connect the two macs with a firewire cable. Then restart the old Mac while holding down the "t" key. This will start your old Mac in firewire target mode, basically turning it into a harddrive which will mount on the desktop of your new Mac.
You might be able to drag and drop your iTunes folder from the Home>Music directory of your old Mac into the Home>Music directory. Otherwise, you can drag the folder to the desktop of the new machine and then drag and drop each individual folder into the iTunes window of the new Mac to import the music. Be sure to deauthorize (from the iTunes Music Store) your old iBook before selling it.

I'm having the same issue. I saved a PDF from an email into iBooks. I'm on apple applying for a job but the only option the upload button has is from the Photos file. How ironic right? Luckily I'm in Logistics and not an IT specialist applying for this job! Lol. Does anyone know the fix?

  • How do I transfer a movie from my Ibook to imac in it's original format?

I have bluetooth or firewire but it changes the movie into Quicktime
    IMacG5 & IBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hello Ellen,
What format are you talking about? I don't understand
how you are doing it to make the movie change format.
If it is an iMovie project folder you can just drag
it over using a firewire connection and 'Target Disc
Mode' providing it is not a later version of iMovie
on the iBook to the iMac. You can also import it
directly into iMovie from the iBook's HD using
    'Target Disc Mode'.
Target Disc Mode - Turn off your iBook. Connect the
two computers via Firewire. Start the iBook holding
down the 'T' key. The Firewire logo will appear on
the screen and the iBook HD will appear on the screen
of the iMac. Just open the iBook HD icon, find your
files and drag them across. That's all there is to it.
    Thank you Sill rabbit:
I had a memory lapse. It has been so long since I did it.

  • I need a data transfer from intact hard drive of older macbook that won't boot. Can Apple provide this service even though my one to one membership has expired?

I need a data transfer from a 2005 Macbook to my new one (2010). I damaged the old laptop and although it wouldn't turn on, when I brought it to the Apple Store they ascertained that the hard drive was still intact. They said I needed to purchase a one to one membership to get a data transfer, which I did, but somehow forgot about it and now it's expired. Is there any way I can still get the data from the old hard drive transferred to my new macbook? Can Apple provide this service even though my one to one membership has expired?

Go to OWC where you can purchase a suitable enclosure for the drive. You will need an enclosure for a SATA notebook drive. This is assuming the old computer is a MacBook and not an iBook. I make this observation because the first MacBook was released in 2006, not in 2005. If yours is a 2005 model then it's an iBook and uses an ATA interface.
Install the old drive in the enclosure, connect to your new computer. You can then transfer your data.

  • Transfer from old hard drive to new MacBook + Antivirus

    Hi,
My trusty iBook G4 finally died on me (Failing to read Logic board) and I am waiting for my replacement MacBook.
My question is: Can I remove the hd from my iBook and set it up in an enclosure and then transfer all my data/ preferences over to my shiny new aluminium MacBook?
Also, any preferences on antivirus software? I have always used symantec but have just read about the range of Intego products.
Any advice on both topics would be most appreciated.

Zlig said, "Hi, you should be able to do this no problem. You can go for an inexpensive USB2 enclosure and use "Migration Assistant" to import your stuff across during setup of the new machine."
No, don't use Migration Assistant from a PPC to an Intel Mac. See Basic Guide to Migrating to Intel Macs here:

  • Migration from G3 iBook to Macbook Pro 2.16

I bought a Macbook Pro Core2Duo 2.16 when I was in the States in January. Used Migration Assistant to transfer system from the iBook G3 (10.3.9) when I got home in February. No real problems (& the Pro is perfect -- and the great iBook is still in use) but there is a system confusion I caused and then ignored.
On login I have 2 user accounts where there should be one (me). One is in the name of the old system, Howard Dratch, and opens with the PW for the Pro and Tiger. The other is hfdratch which should have been the name for the new machine. It shakes off the PW for the MBP. I have been worried about logging in with it on iBook's PW wondering if I will enter some Panther ghost-system.
Also, in HD/Users(the folder with an icon)/Deleted Users there is a dmg file labeled hfdratch with 4.4GB. I haven't mounted it to see what comes out. Should it be there taking up 4+gigs?
Obviously I did something wrong when I migrated. Any suggestions as to whether to delete one of the user options on startup and what, if anything, to do to the dmg file would be appreciated.
    ibook 900mhz,640mb,40GB ice dual USB(10.3.9)/Macbook Pro 2.16, 120gb Mac OS X (10.4.10) Mercury 80GB HD

An ethernet cable should go faster. That's how I did it yesterday. However, even so the Migration Assistant said it would take 5 hours. So I drilled down into the options and de-selected my music and my photos and just moved apps and account settings. After about 90 minutes I was up and running. At that point I enabled File Sharing on my old computer, then logged into it using Finder on the new one. I manually copied over my music and photos into the appropriate directories while I continued to work. Despite what Migration Assistant said, it only took about 90 more minutes to do that while I was actually writing a document in MS Word on the new one.
