Transfer from G5 machine to Mac Pro

I know there must be so many people asking this but I just wanna be sure.
I am buying a Mac Pro (2.66 Ghz Quad Core) from a friend and need to transfer my existing stuff over to the the mac pro.
What is the simplest way to do it?
He says I can transfer my system drive (On a G5 machine-Tiger) onto the Mac pro by using a firewire cable and then just slot in my audio drive (into the Mac pro) and everything will work fine. Is this correct? Won't there be issues with the plug-ins etc.?
Thanks for all your help.

Don't do this.
All your apps, plug-ins and everything else were installed using PPC code in the UB installers. Just copying stuff over will lead to all sorts of problems. Also, anything authorized via challenge/response won't work as the hardware ID is going to be different.
Take the time to reinstall everything fresh. Your library items will all be fresh and corruption-free, and you'll be much happier; it's a great opportunity to do some serious spring cleaning, and leave out junk you've installed over time that you really don't want or need. Yes, it'll take longer, but you'll land up with a cleaner, more stable system.
Your project drive is a different matter. Assuming it just contains data, you can add it to a bay and you should be fine. You might consider copying everything off the drive, partitioning it and install a clone system backup so you can try out updates and OS upgrades in the future without affecting your main system. Then just copy your project data back to the main partition. A dual-boot machine is a great time saver if disaster strikes.
Happy New Mac!

  • Synchronize/Transfer email messages from PowerBook to my Mac Pro

Before buying my Mac Pro I was (still am) using a PowerBook and I have a ton of email messages that have been downloaded to my hard drive. I would like to synchronize/transfer those messages to my Mac Pro so that I don't have to be searching for messages in the other computer.
I tried using the Migration Assistant but my email messages were not transferred.
    What do you suggest?

What type of mail account do you have - POP or IMAP? What email application do you use? Until you answer these questions it will be difficult to advise you.

If you have a license for Lightroom, you should be able to reinstall it from an installer disc or re-download it from Adobe after explaining the situation and clarifying the license issues. Either will be simpler than trying to extract and install it from a TM backup of a different Mac, I think. If it's anything like other Adobe products, it has bits and pieces all over the place that you'll have to find and put in their right places on your girlfirend's Mac.

  • Transfering data from Time Machine to Mac Book Pro

Trying to transfer data from Time Machine to new Mac Book Pro.  Migration Assistant closes down Time Machine and so it doesn't show up on my icons.  How to work around?

Those folders were inadvertently excluded from your backups, and as a result you can't restore your data in Recovery, Setup Assistant, or Migration Assistant.
Starting from a fresh installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Follow the instructions on this page to associate your existing backups with the new installation.
You should now be able to enter Time Machine and restore your user data from a snapshot. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.

  • Only partial transfer from Time Machine to new Macbook Pro?

Hello, I don't know why but with my new Macbook Pro I chose to migrate everything from Time Machine from my Imac to the new computer. Applications and some files transfered, but not all my email or email setting, photos, downloads, documents, Itunes, etc was transfered. I had no problem with a different Macbook Pro to transfer all of the contents from the Time Machine to the new Macbook Pro. I could see that one of the three possibilities to check off other deeper files from the Time Machine was not enabled, so couldn't check it off.
I didn't have this problem before.
    Any advice. Thanks.

    Hello,
I transferred from my Intel Imac which is completely up to date. Used the same Time Machine disk to transfer everything to other Macbook Pro and Air. Maybe I did something wrong, because usually all of the mail, the settings, the photos and Itune contents were transferred in one go. It was simple and complete. This time I got many files, and no email setting nor email contents, no download or document. Maybe I should reinstall from scratch and try again. I can't install and archive because I don't have all of the elements from the Time Machine backup that I wanted. I was going to migrate from Migrate Assistant directly from my Imac to the Pro but I don't have a firewire cable and wasn't able to find a way to use the ethernet cable, because I didn't see that option, even though in the user guide is says you can connect the two computers through an ethernet connection.
    Still need help.

  • Can't transfer photo files from old iBook to Mac Pro

When I travel, I upload my photos using a card reader onto my iBook (1.2Hz, 762 RAM). At home, when I try to transfer them to my Mac Pro Quad (2.66Hz, 3Gb RAM) the transfer always starts OK (a number of files transfer) but then stalls out on a particular file. If I go back to my iBook and remove the "stalled" file, then try the transfer, it starts OK and then stalls on a new file, further "down the list".
So I basically can't transfer the files. Curiously, I have tried transfering the files from my iBook to a CF card and the same thing happens, so it seems the issue is with the iBook. Why would it be an issue only in one direction, ie, no problem uploading the files onto the iBook from my CF card reader? Could this be a memory issue? Any thoughts or suggestions?? Thanks.

I suspect a bad HD in your iBook. Pretty much anything that involved stalling and HDs means that.

  • Transferring my files from my 1.1 Mac pro to my new 5k iMac FireWire to lighting?

i Just ordered the replacement for my antique 1.1 version Mac Pro which is loaded with external FireWire hard drives as well as 3 internal 1 and 2 tearabyte and the one tearabyte SSD boot drive it is of course on 10.7.5 it also has a pair of apple cinama displays on from 2006 and the other from 2011
i just bought the machine below picking it up in a week and with it a pair of FireWire 800 to lighting adapters ....
my thought was to transfer my important stuff to the fusion drive via a FireWire 800 to lighting2 cable and the Apple transition software and then  get a lighting 2 housing that will take the 3 internal hard drives and the internal SSD then chain my large external fire wire 800 drives and my FireWire brueray drive off of it with one of the adapters
does all this sound ok? I have not been able to find a lighting 2 drive case the takes the old mac pro drive sleds but can a good 4 or 6 bay lighting 2 extrrnal drive case be recomended?
as the old Mac Pro has windows XP sp3 as its boot camp I know it can not make the move.
I do have win 7 pro 64 as my boot camp on my mid 2009 Mac book pro already running Yosemite with all of the boot camp applications and data on an external F800 two tear drive from laci so my first thought was to use the orignal win 7 distrub DVD to create a new boot camp partition on the 3tera fusion drive  but I am wondering if it would be better to set up the SSD in its new home as dedicated to the boot camp stuff with the existing win external drives....
Sorry for for all the questions but I am some one who made the transition from 400k to 800k to the first mac+ 5 meg hard drives to the SCCI world then to FireWire 400 then to FireWire 800 and I am hoping that this hopefully last migration for a while with be at least semi painless.... And as I near 70 I am not quite the geek I once was.

  • Transfer from old to new Mac impossible

I can't transfer the information from old G5 to a new Mac Pro 8 core. Using T mode, as described, transfer doesn't occur after two hours at all. There is a window "Transferring information" but nothing happens. Using SuperDuper! or Migration Assistant from OS10.4.10 to copy the entire bootable volume from the external HD, is impossible. However, it's possible to copy the old volume to a second, non startup disk, but without libraries, which is worthless.
Do I have to manually transfer the libraries to the new computer in order to use the old applications? It's going to take for ever. I have no idea why the simple transfer from the old Mac to the new doesn't work as advertise.

When you booted up the new machine the first time, did you use the migration assistant? If not, you might want to try using the Restore disk and restore the Mac Pro to its factory state. Also, take a look at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773 and A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs. Those should get you started in the right direction.

  • Migrating from G4 Powerbook to Mac Pro

    Hi all-
I just purchased a Mac Pro online. I'm going to use it to replace my G4 Powerbook which has just become too slow for the video editing and color correction processes I'm trying to use it for.
So... when I run setup assistant and bring all my software over to the new machine, is there a way to bring across all the serial number and license files as well or am I going to have to re-enter all my serial numbers and such?
I've got a LOT of software and plugins with such things and it's going to take a while to re-enter everything. I'm just trying to make the process as painless as possible.
    Powerbook G4, 15 to Intel Xeon 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Please keep in mind that any software you have that is PPC coded should first be replaced with universal binary versions. Although you can transfer preference files and PPC applications, the applications will not run as fast under the Rosetta emulation as their universal binary versions which are coded for Intel.
You should take care about what you migrate because there are important differences between the PPC and Intel Macs that make simple migration a potential disaster:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • Failing to connect through AFP and FTP from the Internet on Mac Pro?

    Hi all,
I have tried to access my Mac Pro (located at home) from my work place without any success. I used to do this on a regular basis with my old G4, and never faced any problem.
All the boxes are ticked in the Sharing Prefs pane, I have keyed in the correct IP address to access my machine, and for some obscure reason it simply doesn't work...
I'm sure someone must have tried this, I'll be interested to know if I am missing something somewhere...
Looking forward for an answer here!!
    Thanks,

    Hi Ned,
You have hit the right spot! I couldn't remember having set up this NAT for my G4, that was too long ago, but I went back into the Belkin Router and readjusted the settings, and it's all fine now!!
For those interested, it took me a while to find out that with the Belkin 4-Ports Router, you can only direct the traffic for AFP or FTP to ONLY 1 IP Address... A bit short in my case, but I manage to find a workaround where I have assigned 1 IP address for the Mac Pro to do AFP (File Sharing) and 1 IP address on my old G4 to do FTP (File Transfer Protocol)...
And if anyone needs help to connect to their home machine while physically being in another place, I'll be happy to help...
    And it's happening!
    Thanks again Ned, well spotted!!!
    Cheers,

  • Address book transfer from Palm 3x to Mac Address Book Lion

Have a vintage Palm3x synched with a vintage Dell Inspiron 8300 desktop computer using XP.  Recently aquired a Mac Book Pro with the new Lion OS.  Is there any way to transfer the address book and memos from the old machine to the new?  Apple recommended trying to transfer via a flash drive using the .csv format.  When I tried to export the data from the Palm Desktop OS 3.0.1 to the flash drive, I got a message: :  "Export error, *.csv contains an invalid path".  Heard from another source that Palm 3X is incompatible with Lion OS anyway, and to try to export to Microsoft Outlook on the old Dell first and then to attempt to synch with the Mac from Outlook...
Any ideas on how this might be done, and if so, what exact steps should I take?  Should I still attempt to sync with Outlook with .csv format? Tried this, but couldn't find the appropriate folder to export to - under the C: drive, there were only about 6 or 8 options, none of which seemed to have anything to do with Outlook.
    Post relates to: Palm IIIx

I tried going to the application support folder to get the address book to transfer from my iMac with Leopard to my Powerbook with Tiger. It didn't work for me either. So here's what I did and it worked like a charm:
Select all contacts in each separate group in your address book on your iMac and drag them individually to a thumb or flash drive. This will create a vcard for each of the groups. ( I had 8 groups). Plug the drive into your Powerbook, add the name of each group you are transferring, and drop each group into the proper group on the Address book. This essentially copies each V-Card from one computer to the other. If you have obsolete addresses on your Powerbook, they will be automatically updated. This may be too late to help you, but perhaps someone else may have the same problem.

  • Changing from G5 to new Mac Pro system

    Hello Mac users,
I did search the forum for answers to my question, did not find any right away.
I have been using a Mac PPC G5 since 2004 or so. I am running Leopard 10.xx on this PPC. Due to requirements in software (seems more new software is for Intel version only) I have decided to break down and get a new Intel Mac Pro (dual 2.8, etc).
I have 2 G-Tech external firewire drives, and 1 internal SATA, and 1 external SATA to Firewire drive. All these drives are formatted as Extended, non-journaling (only 1 partition on each). Will the new mac read these drives without issue? I plan to place the external SATA/Firewire (It is in an ICY Dock) in to one of the spare bays in the new system. This drives carry the bulk of my data.
I have many applications, iPhoto 6, iMovie 6, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, and a few others. I plan to re-install all these apps on the new machine. I might try to copy my pref files for final cut and soundtrack to the new system.
I would also like to copy all the data under my user name on the "Macintosh HD" to the same username on the new mac. I plan to have the same user names on the new system.
I am trying to cover all the pitfalls in moving from my old system to the new one. I have seen postings recommending not using the setup assistant or the migration assistant to accomplish these tasks, and I do not mind reloading the apps, too much, particularly if it is safer!
any tips or advice on the process will be appreciated.

Will the new mac read these drives without issue?
    Yes.

Check your applications for compatibility; unless you need to use the older iLife applications, don't install them. If you need to use the older iMovie only, use this download instead of the version on the PowerMac. Preference files don't need to be checked.
I would also like to copy all the data under my user name on the "Macintosh HD" to the same username on the new mac. I plan to have the same user names on the new system.
Create the accounts in the same order they were initially created.
