Transfer from MBP to MBA?

Hi guys,
I've just replaced by MBP with an MBA & understand that I can transfer data from one to another via Ethernet. Seeing as the MPA doesn't have an Ethernet port, I was wondering on the following:
I will possibly never use an Ethernet - USB or Thunderbolt adaptor again once I have run the update. I also note that the USB units appear to be very poor & tend to fail after a few months of use. On that basis a Thunderbolt - Ethernet adaptor would seem logical. However, both units have a thunderbolt port, can't I just link the two this way to transfer my data?
Thanks in advance.
Al.

Hello Alister,
Its great that both computers have a Thunderbolt port, becuase the Migration Assistant can use just the straight up Thunderbolt port to Migrate the date between the 2 computers.
How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4889.
There are several ways to transfer information from one computer to another with Migration Assistant:
FireWire or ThunderBolt (if your Mac has these ports)
Wireless (Wi-Fi) or Ethernet (if your Mac has an Ethernet port or adapter)
Time Machine backup or other disk
All the very best,
Sterling

I used Migration Assistant to transfer from MBP (Leopard OSX 10.6.8) to Mac Mini (Lion OSX 10.7). Documents cannot be "seen" or "found". Ditto Music , movies, and pictures.Stumped!

System Preferences/Users & Groups shows you the various user accounts you have.
Look at your hard drive in the Finder sidebar. You should see Applications, Library, System, and Users. If you look in Users you will see a Shared folder. From the user Migration Assistant created, find the iTunes folder and drag it to Shared. Log out and log in using your normal user account, go to the same place and copy it to Music in your normal user account. Another option is to leave it in shared so any user can access it. You will have to tell iTunes where to find the music by going to iTunes/Preferences/Advanced.
Welcome to the world of Mac. Some ‘light’ reading to help the transition. I don’t recommend trying to get through all of this at once.

  • Transfer of info from MBP to MBA

    Trying to link new
13" MBA to 2008 17" MBP to transfer files. Not working wirelessly. Suggestions?

    Hi Demwoman.
    I agree with SP F.
I transferred stuff from my mid-2009 MBP using Migration Assistant. It was tricky to get going. It would have been best to do it when given the prompt at first set up, but of course I didn't know that at the time. Just follow the instructions VERY carefully. Read ALL the words.
Once the process is complete, check by searching thoroughly for the files you transerred. (Look through Launch Pad.) I did a cursory look, didn't see what I expected to see, thought the transfer hadn't worked so I did it again. Of course, I ended up with TWO User-thingies. Yes, I'm an idiot. Again - read all the words.
The worst bit was that it took so long - over an hour - all at a time when I wanted to play with my shiny new Air.
    It can be done though.

  • How to move iTunes files from MBP to MBA?

I have an older MPB (mid-2009) and an new MBA (late-2010).  Planning on getting a new MBA after Mountain Lion comes out sometime in July.
That means moving files from the MPB and the MBA over to the new MBA at some point.
In preparation of that I want to get all my iTunes files onto the current MBA.  Trouble is that I have used both the MBP & MBA to import music or videos as well as purchases into iTunes on both.
Without totally screwing things up what is the best way to get iTunes files (purchased or imported) from one Mac to the other without losing or corrupting things?
I already have a problem that there are movies on my iPhone4 that will not remove even though they are not checked when I sync.
How do you join iTunes from 2 Mac's?  Do you have to deauthorise one?
Thanks for any help.  I don't want to get things more confused than they already are.

99% of downloads are from my US iTunes account so those rules should apply.  What I'm wondering now is the comment about only 2 downloads.
The entire process is in advance of a new MBA.  I had thought it would be easier to get things moved from the MPB over to the MBA before I got the new MBA.  Now it seems maybe I should wait it out, get the new MBA then moved things from both the MBP and older MBA over to the new laptop.
Because Apple does changes to machines I have the older MBP with an older external HD that matches its connections. (Things from the MPB include transfers from the old MacBook).  Then I have the MBA with its external HD using a different connection because it only has a USB.
With the new MBA I'll have maybe a completely different external HD because its connections are Thunderbolt.
See where I'm headed with this?
It's the process of getting everything from the old MBP & external, the new MBA & external ... all moved over to the mid-2012 MBA & external.  Included in all of that is a huge amount in information.  Music along is over 400 GB.  Think we all are going to have the same issue as the Mac's upgraade and change.

  • ITunes Transfer from MBP to Server

I would like to move my iTunes music / movies etc from my MBP laptop to a new Mac Mini Server.
How do I copy all music, TV and Movies and preserve all my iTunes library information e.g. purchase date, date added, play count, smart folders etc.
I know I could just import them into the blank library on the Server, but I think I will loose the catalogue information which I use to sort / play media.

You can use Apple's Migration Assistant program to transfer data from your backups, or from another Mac, which will merge with the data you have on your system; however, if you want to copy the iTunes library itself, then you can do so via the Finder. Just copy the username/Music/iTunes folder from your previous computer to the new one.
Then open iTunes and immediately hold the Option key. When you do this, a library selector window will pop open. Use this to select the new library (within the "iTunes" folder you copied), and then when iTunes is open, go to its preferences, and then click "Advanced." In here, click the Change button and ensure the "iTunes Music" folder within the username/Music/iTunes directory (again, the one you copied) is selected as the media folder location.
When you have done this, iTunes should load and use the new library and the media stored within it.

  • Migration from MBP to MBA: tips on using two machines at once?

    Hi folks,
Seeking wisdome of the community here. I am retirng a long serving MBP-2010, moving over to a new MBA-2013.
For lots of reasons, I'm setting up the new Air manually, rather than use Setup Assistant. I'm planning to continue using the Pro as a media player, at home, for emergency backup. The Air will be my main work device. I'm manually migrating my data, and will reinstall software on the Air selectively, as needed, to minimize some of the messiness that slowed down my old unit.
So here's my question, concen: Are there any concerns, pitfalls, or tricks to using two machines, connected to the same Apple ID, in parallel? Should I uninstall any of the software in the old unit, or disconnect it from my iTunes, or anything else?
Thanks for any reference, advice, or URLs. I searched the boards, but had no luck finding similar queries.
    All the best, Adam

No, you can connect many Macs (and IOS devices) to the same AppleID, in fact for iCloud useage, you have to.

  • How to display 2560x1080 on external monitor from MBP or MBA?

Is there any way to make MBP 17 (Intel HD and nVidia GT graphics, SnowLeo) or MBA 13 (Mountain Lion) display 2560x1080 on external monitor (LG 29" ultrawide)? My MacPro with RadeonX1900 card (10.5.8) does it perfectly but I cannot find a way to get the laptops to do it. Tried res. switching apps, still no good. Thanks.

It worked perfect for me. Maybe settings should be different for your laptops. In my case I'm using a MBP 15" with a GeForce 330M.
    The monitor I have is the LG 29EA93 (21:9) @ 2560 x 1080.
Make sure you have exactly same values in Switch Res X. Special attention to "Scan rate".
You can see in the capture below that it's working
and, just in case, here you have the settings that worked for me
It might be also different for each video card...
    Greetings!!

  • Migration from MBP to MBA

I have a mid-2011 MBA which is fully set up with applications and data.  My wife has an early-2011 MBP which is also fully set up with apps and data.
I am in the process of "switching" these two devices -- move my stuff to the MBP and hers to the MBA.  Both are fully up to date with software update and both have been backed up using time machine.
I can use migration assistant to move the MBP to the MBA, but suspect that it will NOT have enough room as my own account (and files) will remain.  Am I correct in thinking this?  The MBA has a 250 GB SSD, but only 30 GB free.  If my suspicion is true, am I better off doing some sort of "disk wipe" on the MBA and then using migration assistant?
Thanks for the help and thoughts on this.

Since you say that you have both Macs backed up with Time Machine, read this link and choose the method that suits you the best:

  • After migration from MBP to MBA I can no longer add to my iTunes library

I just did what appeared to be a flawless migration from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air. All except for iTunes. I've searched here this site for a solution, tried various fixes, and nothing seems to work so far. Here's what happens:
iTunes works in all respects. All my files are still there, I can still sync to my iPhone, all of that. But if I do anything that requires writing music to the iTunes folders/database (such as adding an MP3 to the library or consolidating the library), I get an error "Attempting to copy to the disk "Macintosh HD" failed. You do not have enough privileges for this operation". I have tried changing the permissions for all of the iTunes music folders, including finally giving read/write access to "everyone". However, this error message refuses to go away.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?!
    Many thanks,
    Howard

  • Transfer large file from iMac to MBA

I just downloaded Lion to my iMac. Now want to transfer it to MacBook Air before I open it on the iMac. Working from iMac; 4G thumb drive says not enoough room. iDisk not big enough. Tried to transfer via wifi (time capsule) by draging from iMac app folder to the MBA that shows up in the shared label in the side bare and get a message saying ""... can't be moved because Geoffrey Kloster's MacBook Air can't be modified. File sharing is on in both computers.
Tried going other way (working through MBA) but can't get to the iMac. Remote disk shows the remote computer with a note "waiting for disk drive..."
It took 11 hours to download so I'd really like to transfer from one Mac to the other. How can I do it?
    Thanks
    Geoff

Step one is to get a larger flash drive. Since you bought an MBA with limited connection capability—no FireWire or ethernet, your options are limited.

  • Not from MBP/MBA

I am able to Airplay music videos and movies to the AppleTV using my iPad. It does not work with my MBP or MBA. I have the square indicator with an arrow inside. The TV shows, sometimes, a still picture from the video and a rotating circle as if it was downloading or something. Any ideas?

How can I migrate data from an old MBA to a new one without having access to the screen of the old one? The screen of the old MBA is damaged !

If your "older" MBA has a Thunderbolt port then it isn't that old. See Target Disk Mode about how it's used. Note that without a monitor you won't be able to tell from the screen when it has fully started, and if it succeeded in starting in TDM. If it did, then the hard drive should appear on the Desktop of your new computer. You can then access it to transfer your files. You can even use Migration Assistant or any backup utility to transfer data. Just don't try to transfer system files.

  • MBP and MBA do not find TC upon wake up

Strange...when using the actiontec modem/router my imac, mbp and mba wake up and are on-line. When I install the Time Capsule (the actiontec is then reconfiguered to turn off radio signal to avoid interference) all machines work fine except they do not reconnect pon wake up. Have to manually click on my network and then all is fine.
Because we use FIOS, I cannot eliminate the actiontec altogether. But the isue seems related only to the TC.
    Any idea?

Have verizon come out and switch the ONT type from coax to ethernet. the cnnect TC directly to ONT. If you have the video service connect the Actiontec to the TC and put its ip address in the DMZ and connect your set top boxes to it.

  • I have a MBPro mid 2013 with 1 Thunderbolt port. Just bought a Mac monitor and want to daisy chain a PC monitor to it. Use a Mini DVI to VGA adapter from MBP to PC monitor. How do I daisy chain the 2 monitors?

    Hall Palm Desert,
if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

  • Vendor Open items transfer from one Recon to Another recon

We have wrongly maintained one recon account in Vendor.
Is there any way to trnasfer Vendor Open items transfer from one Recon to Another reconciliation account..

    Hi,
The best way is to transfer the items from old to new reconciliation account.
Please use the following entries to transfer.
    1. Dr Vendor a/c(Old recon a/c)
        Cr Vendor clearing a/c
After nullifying the balance in old recon account, here chage recon in the master.
    2. Dr Vendor clearing a/c
        Cr Vendor a/c(New recon a/c)
F101 only post the adjustment entry at period end and reverse the same entry in next period. So, transferring the items is the best method. If you have volume of data, then create a LSMW for this.
