Transfer from old iMac Blueberry 266 to MacBook

A shiny new MacBook is about to arrive, replacing my 2nd Mac in the household, an older iMac 266 Rev C.
The older iMac does not have a firewire port, so I can not use the SetUp/Migration Asssitant to transfer files/info.
I do have a Crossover cable, so I can connect the two machines. I have 10.3.9 on the old Mac, 10.4.10 on the new
My question is as follows:
- What directories I need to copy in order by bring over MSOffice and Quickbooks from the old to the new? I need to carry over license info for both apps.
I do not want to copy over the System folder....
Thanks in advance!
Rob

MS Office should transfer as a self contained entity from the Applications Microsoft Office folder if it is a version made for mac OS X. Note, you can't have it on both machines at once. Quickbooks I don't know.
Also your Documents folder has a Microsoft User folder you want to transfer over, so Entourage information if you used it gets transferred over too. I for one would move away from Entourage, because it can get data corrupted very easily. If you want to know how, I can direct you to a FAQ.

  • File transfer from old G4 iBook to new MacBook Pro

I hope this is the right place for this post/question....
I am trying to do a file migration from my old iBook G4 PPC to my new MacBook Pro. The iBook does not have the migration utility and when I put the new OSX DVD in from my MacBook (as instructed to do in the Migration utility's steps) it does not read it (presumably because it is not the right processor, etc) so I had no luck doing the computer to computer transfer. I do not have the "Time Machine" utility on the old computer and using my regular back-up did not allow me to migrate using the "other drive" option (MacBook never saw the drive in the utility, but does mount it and allow me to access it as a drive). I can do this the hard way, file by file, but I have a couple of concerns that I want to check on before I spend hours going down a bad path.
    1) I have thousands of songs in my iTunes... can I drag and drop these? What about my play lists?
    2) iPhoto - I have thousands of photos - how do I easily transfer those over in their respective scrapbooks?
    3) Bookmarks, I can deal with by trying to find the file and importing them, or doing it manually, although there are a lot of them. Easier way?
    4) Outlook - I can try to export and import using the built in features, but not sure if that will pull all the folders and structure.
Those are the big ones... I have had this computer for 8 years, so it is pretty embedded in my life and I am hoping for a utility or something that will help this process.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Keith

The migration utility in the newer computer's OS X would usually allow
the older Mac's info to be pulled into the new computer; the installer
disc for the new Mac won't do anything for the old PPC Mac since it
would be unreadable. Intel-based Mac machine-specific discs won't
work in PPC-based Macs; and in general different machines can't
or won't use the install-restore discs from other models.
There may have been a way via ethernet, usb or firewire to share files
using a System Preference panel setting to facilitate this action. The
suggested method should be adequate. You can also put an iTunes
library and iPhoto library on a suitable external drive to par-down the
content and reduce clutter in a portable computer's hard disk drive
and still be able to access those carefully moved libraries from there.
Some good support documents in Apple Support tell how to do this.
In Firefox, you will have to rename the old folder of bookmarks to the
same name as the existing new apps folder for them to be seen. I
just replaced folders, carefully, so if that didn't work the first time, the
items were easy to find and try again later. Once you get the folder,
the contents should appear in the new browser version as they had
in the older one, to some extent, after the file or contents are moved.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Transfer from old hard drive to new MacBook + Antivirus

    Hi,
My trusty iBook G4 finally died on me (Failing to read Logic board) and I am waiting for my replacement MacBook.
My question is: Can I remove the hd from my iBook and set it up in an enclosure and then transfer all my data/ preferences over to my shiny new aluminium MacBook?
Also, any preferences on antivirus software? I have always used symantec but have just read about the range of Intego products.
Any advice on both topics would be most appreciated.

Zlig said, "Hi, you should be able to do this no problem. You can go for an inexpensive USB2 enclosure and use "Migration Assistant" to import your stuff across during setup of the new machine."
No, don't use Migration Assistant from a PPC to an Intel Mac. See Basic Guide to Migrating to Intel Macs here:

  • How do i transfer data from my old imac to my new macbook pro?, how do i transfer data from my old imac to my new macbook pro?

HOW DO I TRANSFER DATA FROM MY IMAC TO MY NEW MACBOOK PRO? I tried it with an ethernet cable and it seems to go OK till it gets to applications. From there the time it takes to complete seems to increase rather than decrease!

That's the easiest way, this side of using Time Machine. The time it takes to transfer files between our computers ka vary but while doing it on my MBP I had to leave it plugged in for near 24 hours and it was supposed to take 3.

How can I transfer two user names from an iMac to a new macbook?
got a new laptop and need to transfer two usernames to it, complete with all documents help?

Assuming you haven't already set up a user, the easiest way is to use the Setup Assistant during first boot of the new Mac, with the two Macs connected by firewire.
You'll be prompted to migrate from a choice of sources - choose "from another Mac", select the catagories of data you want to transfer and follow the instructions.

  • How can I transfer photos from my Imac OS9 to a Macbook Pro OS 10 ? 10

How can I transfer photos from my Imac OS9 to a Macbook Pro OS 10 ?

The easiest way is probably to use a USB flash drive (you may have to test whether it is compatible with the Mac OS 9 iMac).
Somewhat more complicated would be to connect the two computers via Ethernet to (the built-in switch of) a broadband router, and then transfer files over the Internet (or a local network).
There are other methods as well (FireWire, CD-R, et cetera), depending upon the exact computer models involved.

  • Transfer data from old iMac to new iMac

Wish to transfer all data EXCEPT iTunes from old iMac (500 GB) to new iMac (2 TB).  Have read this is possible using Firewire connection, is this possible, if so what is the procedure, and how long does it take?
Is another method preferable in terms of speed ?
What to do about 1TB Timecapsule, which is also on our WLAN. Can it be used to back up a subset of data on the new iMac?
    Thanks
    Biermatt

I don't believe Migration Assistant provides the option to exclude iTunes.  If you have iTunes files you wish to preserve on the new iMac, and enough free disk space the new iMac, you could:
    1) Rename the Music/iTunes folder on the new iMac to something like Music/iTunes_original
    2) Run the migration.
    2) Remove the iTunes folder on the new iMac
    3) Rename the iTunes_original to iTunes on the new iMac
You will find Migration Assistant in Applications > Utilities.  Duration depends on how much data you have and speed of hard drives, etc.

  • Transferring files from old iMac

    Hey,
I just did the transfer via firewire of my old files from my old iMac to my new macbook.
I want to scrap everything that came in.
Wish I hadnt done it. Is there any sort of "undo" feature?
should I trash everything on the harddrive and reinstall with the discs that came with the macbook?
    thanks!

    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
    2. Follow the onscreen instructions. In the panel where you select the destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
    3. Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and network settings, select "Archive and Install," then select "Preserve Users and Network Settings." If you want to erase everything on your computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select "Erase and Install." You can't recover erased data.
    4. Click Continue.
    5. Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you'd like to install, or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

  • Copy program from old iMac to a USB drive?

I have an old iMac Blueberry that has Bugdom on it and I want to transfer it to my new iBook. Is this possible via USB thumb drive?

Yes it did - at least it did some with my iBook G3 Dual USB 500Mhz. It is on the gray disk that is labeled "applications." After putting in that disk, there is a folder that is called something like "Extra" or "bonus" content. Inside of that folder are the games.
And OS9 is simple to install. I thought you had to format and wipe off OS X before you could install 9 - but I learned a better way. Just install OS 9 to a folder on your OS X hard drive. All you really need is the Mac OS9 system folder.
Then, there are two a ways to use OS 9. Either A: go into system preferences and enable Classic Support. Point it to the OS 9 system folder you just copied, and your done. Or, B: if you want to use the full-on OS9 with the desktop and everything, just shut down your iBook, and then power it on with the OPTION key held down. Wait for it to scan your hard drive for system folder and you will find one for OS X and one for OS 9. Select OS 9 and now you can boot into that.
So yes, it is easy to install OS 9 as long as you don't do it the long way like the disk will trick you into doing.
Buy just a note, if you do plan on using OS 9 and OS X a lot, I would suggest on partitioning and installing them separately, but in this case, that process is not necessary.
    Hope that helps!
