Transfer from VHS to DVD

My first question - anybody direct me how I can transfer home VHS tape to DVD? Thanks for your help. mike4teer

Hi
You have to convert the analog material on Your VHS tapes to digital format. This
one can do with an analog/bigital converting box. I use a Canopus ADVC-300 but there
are cheeper ones.
Or if You have a miniDV Camera You can either copy to tape on this or if it has
the function "Video through" it can work as a video bridge between the VCR and Your
Mac.
After this I import my VHS tapes to iMovie. Cut away what I don't need. Close iMovie
and drop or import the movie icon into iDVD.

  • I transferred home movies from VHS to DVD. How do I import the data into imovie.

I transferred home movies from VHS to DVD. I can open the data using the DVD Player but I cannot import data into imovie.  Any ideas?

Another option is to download the free app MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 here:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
After loading the DVD on your Mac, drag the icon onto Streamclip's window. From the menu choose File>Export to QuickTime then for Compression select the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). Adjust the quality slider from 50% to about 75% - that should give good quality at a reasonable file size. Leave other settings as they are and click on Make Movie. From the next box, choose a name for the file (it will be a .mov file) and a save location (say Desktop).
The saved .mov file can now be imported to an Event and edited if desired in iMovie.
Note that you may be asked to instal a file from Apple. It's named QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X. It's priced at US$19.99 and is available from the US Apple Store here:

  • Best way to import music from VHS or DVD

I have a few VHS tapes and DVDs with some music tracks I want to make into MP3's. I have a 12" powerbook with microphone jack. What is the easiest way that will yeild really good quality?

    Michelle and Randy:
For a DVD - put it in the Computer and use Audio Hijack to capture the sound and record it to mp3 or aiff or whatever format you choose.
You can read about Audio Hijack here: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/
The VHS is more complicated but as you're only hoping to life the music as opposed to the video: Run a mini-jack (1/8th) cable from the headphone output on your VCR to the line-in on your Mac.
Go to System Preferences -> Sound and under Input select the Line In
Now you need software to record the audio: there many options but I suggest the Open Source (as in Free) Audacity. You can download it from here:
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Then record each album a side at a time. The wave-form editor makes it a cinch to edit the file into tracks. I suggest that you save as Aiff files, which are large, and if you wish you can convert them to mp3 or AAC with iTunes.
Happy Christmas*, Xmas*, Holidays*, Hannukah* or Monday* to you.

  • Rapid transfer of VHS to DVD

I think this is a long shot, but you guys always seem to know a lot more than I do about these things, so I thought I'd ask. . .
I'd like to create a station that allows me to take a VHS tape, enter some stock information into the system--such as Family Name, Date and "Summer Vacation"--then have it sent through a pre-set theme in DSP, burn to DVD and print a standard label on the DVD. I'd like to be able to do multiple transfers at one time and want the entire process automated so I can work on other projects while this is happening. I wouldn't mind investing in multiple iMacs and other licenses for FCS to do this, but I'd like to automate this process as much as possible. Does anyone have any ideas about what other software/hardware arrangements I could use to accomplish this using DSP and my Macs?
If not, any other suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

A reasonable (but low-end) solution would be to use a Canopus ADVC box to digitise the VHS and import directly into FCP.
From there add any necessary info/edits, etc and export to Compressor. Bring the output into DVDSP and use a template to minimise the amount of authoring you are going to be doing.
This is all quite manual in that you need to start and stop the processes at each stage. Also, the output won't be brilliant if you start with VHS, however a clean tape signal can come out pretty well despite the digitising and processing going on.
I use this a fair amount myself, but not on any large scale. There may well be a better, fully automated solution out there that bureaus use.

  • Going from VHS to DVD, which codec?

    Hi all,
I'm bringing in VHS material through a JVC deck with firewire out. The source video then goes to someone else to be edited, then to DVD through iDVD or VisualHub. I'm recording through QTPro, and I would like to export that recording as the smallest possible file (H.264?) before sending it out (so I can fit it on a smaller external drive or even fileshare it). Since the file will be compressed by VisualHub or iDVD, will giving either of those programs an H.264 file look terrible in the end? Does the file always have to be compressed as mpeg-2 to go to DVD? Are there no mp4 vob methods?
    Thanks!

  • Transfer from minidvd to dvd

hello to everybody,i have one sony DCR-DVD310 camera but i dont have sony mini dvd inside i have tdk.(sony say that i must choose only sony mini dvd).i want to do finalize and the camera says recording disabled.what can i do?i want to put them in final cut pro and to make dvd, please help.if i manage it how to put it in final cut pro.

Your post is marked as "Solved" so I assume you've found the answer to your problem.
But just in case you haven't, here's one possible solution:
If the disc will not finalize in the camcorder, the camcorder should still playback the video via the analog outputs. Connect the analog outputs to a qualified DV device (DV camcorder, VTR or converter) then connect the DV device to your Mac via Firewire. On the DVD camera, set it for VTR (play) mode. In FCP, set Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device" and use "Capture Now." Note that you need to manually hit PLAY on the camcorder before you hit the Capture Now button in FCP.

  • Movies from video to DVD readable on DVD player

Question: Is it possible to transfer a movie stored on video tape back into iMovie in a format that will allow me to burn the movie on a DVD that can be played on a DVD player?
I saved my edited movies by exporting them to my digital camcorder and then exporting them to video tape. I have imported the movies back from the video tape into the camcorder and from there back onto my computer into what’s called an iMovie Project. When I attempt to burn a DVD disk I get a message which says the disk I burn will be a copy that can be played on my computer but not on a DVD player.
Is there a way around this problem?

    Welcome to the discussions.
    Answer: Yes.

  • Compressor 3 best presets for VHS to DVD

I used iMovie to edit footage that was injested into my MAC from the easy roxio vhs to dvd kit. I ran it through compressor because the video was not recognized by iDVD or iMovie. I used my preset iphone to FCP 6. just to see if it worked to solve my first problem and it did. Now I am curious as to what would be the best preset/droplet to build that will produce the best quality out of the VHS footage? I did notice there was a color drop from the iphone preset I used. That preset is an Apple ProRes 422 HQ and audio is listed as multi track passthrough. Thanks for the help!

    >They come in as an MPEG-2 from roxio's easy vhs to dvd kit
Exactly.  MPEG-2 is a highly compressed format with a lot of information for 14 out of every 15 frames being thrown out.  And as you've discovered, it does not work natively in FCP or iMovie.  So when you place an MPEG-2 video clip on the Timeline and render, you're converting the video yet again, suffering more quality loss.  Then you exported ... which is yet another level of compression and another quality hit.  Then it will have to be compressed to MPEG-2 again for the DVD process.  Your chosen workflow is adding so much compression and conversion that it only degradates the image quality.
If this is the only way you have available, you could have used MPEG Streamclip to convert the Roxio MPEG-2 files so they matched your Seqeuence settings in FCP, thus eliminating the need to render (rendering converts the video so it conforms with the Sequence settings).  Or better yet, purchase, rent or borrow a DVD recorder and record directly from VHS to DVD in one step.
    Good luck with your project,

  • Is it Possible to Transfer Movies from VHS and HI8 to DvD via Encore?

I have been trying to figure out a way to transfer my inlaws' home videos from VHS tapes and HI8 8mm tapes to my computer to burn them to DVD. I have been unsuccessful so far. I thought about just taking them to a transfer place, but there are roughly 30 tapes and I need 6 copies of each one. Any thoughts, recommendations, or links to helpful threads would be appreciated.
I don't know what format/resolution to transfer from into the computer or what will work best to burn out to DvD.
I have been told that I can't transfer directly into FCE without a firewire port (which this computer does not have) so I have been using a MyGica iGrabber to transfer files in.

Encore does not do video capture, that would be Premiere Pro via Firewire
A model 55 at http://www.grassvalley.com/products/converters is one way from external to computer, and creates the DV AVI files you need for PPro editing
If you don't need to edit the files at all, those DV AVI files may be used by Encore for DVD authoring
I know nothing about the device you mention... what kind of files does it create?

  • On a new Mac how to transfer video from an external DVD to an external hard rive

I want to transfer my family videos from an external DVD player attached to my new mac to an external hard drive for back up purposes.  What do I do?  Thanks.

It is an external DVD drive connected by USB.
Then you can copy your DVDs using Disk Utility.
Insert your DVD in the drive.  If DVD player opens, close it.  Then open Disk Utility.  (Disk Utility comes with all Macs; it's located in the /Applications/Utilities folder.)
In Disk Utlity, select your DVD disk in the pane on the left side.  Then do File > New Disk Image from (title of your DVD disk).
Then give a name to the copy you are about to create and select a save location.
In "Image Format" select DVD/CD Master  (very important!)
Set encryption as NONE  (also very important!)
    Then Save
This will create a disk image file on your hard drive.  It's a duplicate of your DVD.  You can burn this image to other DVD media and/or play it on your computer same as if it were an actual DVD disk.
Note: this will not work with commercial DVDs due to their copy protection.

  • I want to transfer my VHS-C videos to DVD.

I want to transfer my VHS-C videos to DVD using my I MAC (Mid-2011).  I have the camcorder (Panasonic PV-IQ305) to use.  I also have a VHS player I can use.

Does the Panasonic camcorder have the play thru capability? If it does you can connect the camcorder to your Mac with a FW cable, put in a tape, launch iMovie and play the tape in the camcorder to import it into iMovie.  If the camera does not have play thru see if you can find one that does.  Then connect your VHS player to the camera and the camera to your iMac.
Otherwise you'll need to use a converter like the Canopus converters. They are not inexpensive but do an excellent job. I used the ADVC-100 model to convert all of my VHS videos to digital and then burn to iDVD. There are undoubtly other converters on the market that do the same function.  The Canopus is the only one I've seen discussed in this community.
If you could borrow a camcorder with pass thru you could save a few $$$.

Simple to use and works well.
Once you have all your VHS tapes on your iMac, you can edit them with iMovie and iDVD to burn them.
You can also use VisualHub to directly convert and burn to DVD
