Transfer hard drive from macbook to macbook pro

I currently have a regular macbook running leopard that I've been using for some time. I just purchased a new macbook pro and I wanted to know if it is at all possible to just remove the HD from the macbook and put it into the macbook pro and have that machine run.
I'm kind of new to apple hardware so I wasnt sure if all the drivers are installed be default or if I'll need to do some prep work.
Thanks in advance.

Be aware that replacing the drive in a MBP requires substantial disassembly and some special tools. It will also likely void your warranty with respect to any consequential repairs. Apple will likely refuse warranty service when they see that a user installed drive is present. As long as you are aware of the possible problems, then you can proceed at your own risk.
You will find video tutorials for disassembly at OWC.

I just bought a MBA and I need to move my photos and itunes to an external hard drive (from my old MacBook Pro) because they won't fit on the Air.  I got the photos moved fine and I followed an online tutorial to move the necessary files for itunes, but it didn't work.  The files copied fine, but when I tell iTunes on the Air to look at the external drive for the library, it doesn't find anything.  What I copied was the entire iTunes Media folder.  So, how do I move the necessary iTunes files from my old Pro to a external drive so I can access them from my new Air?  Whew!

iTunes- How to move the library to an EHD
After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

  • Using my boot hard drive from an older Macbook pro into a new one?

    Hi,
I put my hard drive from my older Macbook pro 15" 2.16 Ghz Core2 Duo computer (Mac 10.6.4) into my new Macbook pro 2.4 GHz (2010) as my boot drive. Since then I've upgraded to 10.6.6 and everything seems fine.
My concern is that since my OS was installed on a different computer, I might not have all the proper drivers for my new machine. Can this be the case? Does the OS install all drivers for all models all the time? Sometimes I wonder if my graphics card drivers are installed because it seems slower than I expect, but the graphics card shows up in System Profiler.
    Thanks!
    Jason

You can resolve that by installing the 10.6.6 Combo Updater instead of the smaller incremental updater.
+BTW, you should never use a version of OS X that's older than the version that shipped with the computer.+

  • Switched internal hard drives from G4 to Mac Pro - not being recognized

I just transfered to internal hard drives from my G4 MDD OS Tiger and my Mac Pro isn't recognizing them in the bays. Jumpers were removed for slave option. Are the older drives not compatible with the newer computer? What am I missing?

I did, and it bent a couple of the pins in the drives. I'm going to try to put them back in my G4 to see if they still work. In the meantime I went to Best Buy and talked to the Geek Squad who set me straight. I bought an SATA drive and now it's up and running with time machine.
I just wish they were a little more descriptive in the type of hard drive to install.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Can I put my hard drive from my 2009 Macbook in my 2011 macbook pro

I am swapping computers with a co worker.  I have the 2008 Aluminum body MacBook and he as the 2011/12 MacBook Pro.  To make it an easy swap I was hoping I could swap the hard drives.  My MacBook is updated to Mountain Lion and has all the updates.  His I believe still has Lion.
It makes sense to me that I should be able to swap hard drives and turn them on and watch them go.  However I'm certain there is something I am missing.
Does anyone know if this is an easy task or not.  I have upgraded my 2008 MacBook to a 500GB HD.  The HD in the Pro is also 500 GB.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks

normally i would say that it wouldn't work because your hard drive doesn't have the right drivers for the 2011/12 Macbook since they're totally different in ways of chipset and graphics.
but because you're running Mountain Lion - it might work if you just do the swap.
give it a try - the worst that can happen - the 2011/2012 Macbook might not boot.
    good luck

  • Unable to clone hard drive from early 2008 macbook using disk utility, error 254

Attempting to upgrade my early 2008 Macbook hardrive, currently 160gb to a 250gb drive.  Using Mac Disk Utility to restore from drive in computer to the 250 gb drive currently attached via usb.  Receiving error, Could not validate source, error 254.  I know this process works as I recently upgraded our MacbookPro to 1 TB.  The 250gb drive I am attempting to clone to is from that computer.  I have formated the 250gb drive, mac osx extended journaled, guid.  Not sure how to proceed.  Suggestions?

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

  • Can I take my 1TB hard drive from my old macbook to my new macbook

    Hi,
I am getting a new macbook pro tomorow in the post, its the non retina 15 inch model. I have my macbook that i upgraded to 1TB, the harddrive is filled to about 600gb with music, music videos, karaoke, software etc due to me being a DJ. My new macbook pro that im getting tomrrow comes with 500GB. Can I take my harddrive from my old macbook and place it in the new one. Then switch the the new macbook on and loads like it is now but with the hardware macbook upgrade. Thanks

I don't know what version of OS X is installed on the new models. Be sure to check first. If it's running Lion (10.7.x) then you're OK with Mountain Lion. If it's running Mountain Lion check the version. If it's running 10.8, then be sure to install 10.8.1 on your drive before swapping.

  • Connecting hard drive from G4 to Mac Pro

Hi! Bought my Mac Pro after my G4's (Digital Audio)hard drive bit the dust. I'd like to retrieve whatever I can from the old hard drive, but it's obviously not as simple as dropping the old drive into the Pro. What kind of connector should I look for? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

Ok. I thought i had it all figured out. . .
I went to the website of the harddrive manufacturer of the G4 drive and figured out how to set it to "slave". After doing that, I attached it to the cable in the second position, leaving the original optical drive attached to the end. When I booted up, I immediately heard the whirring of the G4 drive, telling me that it was running. I got excited. The Pro took a little longer than usual to start up, which worried me as I sat watching the litte gear spin around, but it eventually came to. Unfortunately, it didn't work. When I checked the hardware infomation under "about my mac", it indicated that there were no ATA drives attached. On top of that, the original drive was no longer recognized, as it indicated that there was no equipment attached to use for Disc Burning. The optical drive that came installed is set to "Cable Select". Do I have to change that to Master? Any other ideas/recomendations?

  • Adding hard drives from G4 to Mac Pro

    Hi All,
I have a G4 Quicksilver with 2 hard drives, an 80 GB that came with it that has OS 10.3.9 and a 120 GB for storage. Can I put those in my Mac Pro (10.4.11) and run all the programs and swap files from disc to disc etc?
    Thanks
    -Ian

You will need SATA drives to install inside. Best place for your old drives is FW case probably.
Any applications that you run, make sure they are either installed fresh, or latest version, ideally Universal Binary. Do not use Migration Assistant to bring any applications over.
500GB SATA drive would be under $100. And your MP has room for 4 internal SATA drives.

  • Transfer Hard Drive from 20" iMac to 27" iMac - Good or bad idea?

I've just bought my wife a new 27" iMac to replace her 20" iMac. To keep things simple I'd rather just take out the drive in the 20 and put it in the 27. Anyone try this and is there any reason why it wouldn't work since the OS is "universal" for these recent machines?
The reason I don't want to just run with a fresh install (which is what I would prefer to do) is that it's my wifes computer and then she'd have to start new with all her settings etc. While I think the migration asst is a great feature, i've also had other issues doing that that leaves a bit of a mess behind it and some permissions got screwy once.
I may just give it a go and see if it works right away. I'd prefer not to spend lots of time "transferring" files, data, prefs between the old/new machines and just get up and running quickly since her 20" OS install is working great.
    Thoughts?

    LawrenceT,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
*Very bad idea if you intend to use the OS that is on the 20" machine in the 27" machine for a number of reasons*. First you will void your 27" machines warranty and if the 20" has any left it's gone too. Next is you will run into problems with the 27" because the 20's OS is set up for that machine which has totally different specifications. What is wiser is to use Migration Assistant and simply move everything over, this is done when you intially turn on the new machine it will prompt you. If you have already set up the 27" then you can still run Migration Assistant. Just open the application and it will walk you through the process. If you have trouble finding MA simply open Spotlight (upper right corner icon that looks like a spyglass) and type in Migration Assistant.

  • Installing hard drive from Macbook into Macbook Pro. Do I have to reformat?

I've got a work macbook (250GB hard drive) that has all my work apps and documents on the hard drive. I just purchased a used Macbook pro (120GB hard drive) that I want to take the hard drive from the old Macbook and place it into my new Macbook Pro (and take the Macbook Pro drive and place it into the Macbook). Basically I'd just be swapping drives.
Can I get away with not doing any data transfers? Will the computers simply just work with the drive from the other laptop? Both are 2006-2007 models. Are all the drivers simply built into the OS and will work universally between mac laptops?
    Thanks.

Yes, unless the computer is newer than the OS installed on the drive. A very small number of preferences may need to be reentered.

  • Can anyone enlighten me as to how I can transfer data from an extracted hard drive off of a Macbook Pro onto a new Retina model? No SATA port!!!

    Hello,
I'm trying to transfer data from my old hard drive (taken out of Macbook Pro 2009) onto a new Macbook Pro Retina.  My ignorance is vast and I purchased an eSATA device to do so, not thinking that there is no SATA port on this new computer.  Is there a special cable or anything anyone can recommend?  I'd be very grateful for some help here.

I would just get a cheap USB enclosure from OWC, put your old drive in it, and use it it transfer the data to your new rMBP. Cheap and simple. The one I spec'ed is for a USB 3.0 enclosure as you have USB 3.0 ports on your computer - much faster than USB 2.0.

  • How do i transfer files from my external hard drive to my new macbook pro?

Hi niel, when I open my hard drive in my mac, I cannot find any files in there. I guess its not reading my hard drive.

  • I have a macbook pro, and i want to transfer my hard drive from my macbook, but the display drivers and such are different.  How do i do this?

I have a macbook pro, and i want to transfer my hard drive from my macbook (500g), but the display drivers and such are different.  How do i do this and is it possible?
The Macbook Pro has Mac OS X 10.4.11 (70g hard drive)
The Macbook has Mac OS X 10.6.8 (500g hard drive)

The MacBook's hard drive lacks the necessary hardware drivers to boot the MacBook Pro even though it has a much newer OS on it; that's why simply moving it into the Pro doesn't work. Presumably you have a very old MB Pro, because only the very first MB Pro model (produced January to May 2006) was ever offered with an 80GB hard drive. Are you sure you want to move your big drive into such an old machine? The MacBook must be newer, because the first MacBook was introduced just as the first Pro model was discontinued.

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.
