Transfer hard drive

Hi,
I have a 15" 2010 MacBook Pro with a 500GB 7200rpm hybrid drive (includes 4GB of SSD). My new 17" 2011 MacBook Pro will be coming in shortly with a 500GB 7200rpm standard HDD. Is there any way to just swap the drives and continue running? I know I'll likely be missing video card drives, etc. but is there no way to obtain them? I just went through a reformat about a month or 2 ago and it'd be a pain to have to install everything again. I know I could likely do the following:
1. Migrate data (personal files) over to new MBP (either manually or using migration assistant)
2. Clone new hardrive back over to the old hard drive
3. Put the old hard drive in the 17" MBP.
But this means I'll have to reinstall all software huh? Pain in my ...
Which programs can I NOT just drag over from the Applications folder? Or does Migration Assistant transfer software too?
That'd be really cool if anyone has answers or a better solution, let me know! Thanks in advance.

You could buy a 2.5" SATA USB external enclosure  inexpensively at any computer store, Best Buy, Amazon, eBay, etc. Then put the old drive in it,  connect it to the new system via USB and you have access to everything on the old HD. (This assumes you don't have a HD password on either drive.)

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

  • Transfer Hard Drives Between iMac & MacBook

Hello! I have an iMac that I was using for personal and a MacBook that I was using for business... I now need to switch my uses and need to transfer all applications, files, documents, photos, etc (basically just switch entire hard drives) between the two computers... I don't even know where to begin?!? There's not a whole lot on either computer... but the files are very important...
Does anybody know of the easiest and quickest way to go about this?!? Please let me know!
Also, does anybody know if it's possible to set up an ipod nano on 2 computers? My desktop and laptop??
    Thanks a Bunch!!!

I'll try the first questions. In some situations you could hook up your MacBook with a firewire cable in Target Disk mode to the iMac and clone or migrate your system directly from one computer to the other. However in your situation you don't want to erase the files from either machine. It's also not a good idea to clone one system directly to the other because they are totally different machines that may have different drivers included in the initial OS install. So this is what I suggest.
    1) Use an external drive to back up one or both of your systems. If the drive is large enough to partition it into 2 partitions then clone the iMac to one partition and clone the MacBook to the other partition. Otherwise you could still do it by just cloning one system. Use Carbon copy cloner or SuperDuper to make the clone.
    2) If you have both imaged cloned to the external connect it to one of the machines and run the Migration assistant to migrate the User files and Applications from the external system that you want. For example, connect the external to the iMac, run migration assistant, and choose to migrate the user files from the MacBook image.
    3) If you are only able to make one backup, lets say you cloned the iMac to the external. Keep the external on standby. Power down your MacBook and connect it to your iMac with a FireWire cable. Hit the power button and hold down the "T" key to boot it into target disk mode. The MacBook's internal drive should now show up on the desktop of your iMac. Run the Migration Assistant from your iMac and choose the MacBook drive to Migrate from.
    4) If the previous step was successful(I would test everything thoroughly) then connect the external drive to your MacBook and run the Migration Assistant to migrate the User files from the external to your MacBook.

  • Transfer hard drive data

brought my mbp core 2 duo (2008) to the genius bar today and they said I needed a new logic board... I want to transfer all my data from the hard drive to an imac via a usb 2.0 to ide&sata cable - I took the hard drive out of the mbp, connected it to the cable - the usb side which is plugged into a 2010 imac light is on but no light is on the sata side and the ide/busy light is not on... the drive is not showing up anywhere on the imac... suggestions? bad cable maybe?

    Hi l,
First, does the transfer cable require a power adapter? And if so, is it plugged in?
A bad cable is certainly possible. To test, you could try another HD and see if it works. If it does, then your MBP's HD is suspect.

  • Bad analog assembly - can I transfer Hard drive to my macbookpro?

My emac has a bad analog assembly. I've already had it repaired once when under the apple care plan. The care plan expired and I don't want to have it repaired again. I have a macbook pro and need to get some infor off of the emac's hard drive. Is that possible? I tried the firewire and commandT and nothing happened.

I thought I could connect the emac to my laptop by firewire, turn on the emac and press command T.
If the eMac was working, that would be possible. But if the logic board is damaged or not getting power, then it won't work. The eMac must be working enough for the basic parts of the logic board and drive channel to function. Whether this is the case with your system, I can't say.
You're saying I need to take the hard drive out of the emac, place it in a firewire case, then use the command T?
If you put the drive in a Firewire case, then you just connect it to the MacBook and it should mount; no key commands should be necessary. If you can't get Firewire Target Disk Mode to work on the eMac, then removing the drive and mounting it on the MacBook is your only option. If you don't plan to keep using the drive, then using a connector such as NewerTech's Universal Drive Adapter would work (presuming the drive is good) and be cheaper than a full case. But if the drive is of reasonable size, you can put it in a Firewire case and then use it as backup or portable storage.
    Hope this helps.

  • How To Transfer Hard Drive Files from Macbook Pro

I have a macbook pro(late 2006 model) which won't turn on. Brought it to the apple store for them to take a look at. I was told that the main circuit board is broken and it will be cheaper to buy a newer macbook instead of fixing it. I was also told that the harddrive was ok. How do I transfer the files from my old macbook pro hardrive(which won't turn on) to a new macbook pro? They offered to help me at the apple store but it will cost me $99 for their "one to one." Can someone help me? Thanks!

What size of a usb external harddrive caddy do I need? What is compatable with the macbook pro hardrive?
2.5" SATA. USB2 models can be found be found for $15 or so. Then the enclosure can be used with an old or new HD for backups/troubleshooting. I have way too many around, but I don't know what I'd do without at least one 2.5" and one 3.5" (but I prefer the faster FireWire 800 models, which are more expensive). In any case, I think it's safe to say you won't regret spending $15 on an enclosure.

  • Transfer hard drive from macbook to macbook pro

I currently have a regular macbook running leopard that I've been using for some time. I just purchased a new macbook pro and I wanted to know if it is at all possible to just remove the HD from the macbook and put it into the macbook pro and have that machine run.
I'm kind of new to apple hardware so I wasnt sure if all the drivers are installed be default or if I'll need to do some prep work.
    Thanks in advance.

Be aware that replacing the drive in a MBP requires substantial disassembly and some special tools. It will also likely void your warranty with respect to any consequential repairs. Apple will likely refuse warranty service when they see that a user installed drive is present. As long as you are aware of the possible problems, then you can proceed at your own risk.
You will find video tutorials for disassembly at OWC.

  • Transfer Hard Drive from 20" iMac to 27" iMac - Good or bad idea?

I've just bought my wife a new 27" iMac to replace her 20" iMac. To keep things simple I'd rather just take out the drive in the 20 and put it in the 27. Anyone try this and is there any reason why it wouldn't work since the OS is "universal" for these recent machines?
The reason I don't want to just run with a fresh install (which is what I would prefer to do) is that it's my wifes computer and then she'd have to start new with all her settings etc. While I think the migration asst is a great feature, i've also had other issues doing that that leaves a bit of a mess behind it and some permissions got screwy once.
I may just give it a go and see if it works right away. I'd prefer not to spend lots of time "transferring" files, data, prefs between the old/new machines and just get up and running quickly since her 20" OS install is working great.
    Thoughts?

    LawrenceT,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
*Very bad idea if you intend to use the OS that is on the 20" machine in the 27" machine for a number of reasons*. First you will void your 27" machines warranty and if the 20" has any left it's gone too. Next is you will run into problems with the 27" because the 20's OS is set up for that machine which has totally different specifications. What is wiser is to use Migration Assistant and simply move everything over, this is done when you intially turn on the new machine it will prompt you. If you have already set up the 27" then you can still run Migration Assistant. Just open the application and it will walk you through the process. If you have trouble finding MA simply open Spotlight (upper right corner icon that looks like a spyglass) and type in Migration Assistant.

  • Moving 1000's of music files to a new hard drive

I have a good amount of songs and I have them all on my external hard drive for my laptop. I want to put the files on the laptop hard drive because my laptop uses all it's memory when connected to the external hard drive, plus whenever i want to carry my computer around, i can only listen to my music if i bring my external hard drive(which can be a hassel). The thing is, if I were to cut and paste all of my music files from my external hard drive, and put them on my laptop hard drive, the saved playlist for itunes would not be able to locate the files at all. I really dont want to have to individually locate these thousands of files after i transfer hard drives. I tried going into the itunes library files with notepad, but the text was all jibberish and in computer terms. Does anyone have any ideas to be able to accomplish this task in less time than having to individually locate each file after i move the files over?
    Sony Vaio Windows XP

Thank you for that. It all looks like it should work except for step 12:
From the Advanced menu, choose Consolidate Library. A message appears that says: "Consolidating your library will copy all of your music into the iTunes Music folder. This cannot be undone."
There is no button that says consolidate library. Not even on the example picture they have.

  • Transferring hard drive files to external hard drive for backup  have old tiger osx 10.4

how do I copy and transfer hard drive to external hard drive for backup of everything?

You can clone the entire drive to the external, provided you have more space available on the external drive than the total of your used filespace on the main drive.
Carbon Copy Cloner will perform the clone for you.

  • Windows Easy Transfer (WET) Issues with External Hard Drive - "Can't read from the source file or disk"

I work for Office Depot, in the tech department. Basically, one of our associates was supposed to do a data backup, and re-install Windows 7, then transfer the files back. He used Windows Easy Transfer and compacted everything into a 163 GB file.
Now comes the hard part. When we try to put it back on his computer ((drag-and-drop to the desktop) which has been wiped back to factory settings using the recovery partition), it stops at 79.5 GB remaining (you know how it doesn't give you a % of completion,
it just shows how many GB are remaining) and then says "Can't read from the source file or disk" and gives you an option to try again, or cancel. It gets hung up on the same point each time.
Normally, this wouldn't be a huge issue, but the contents on the drive are his wife's architect blueprints and interior design stuff, along with wedding photos, etc, which are the only copies they have. On top of those, they have court documents and other
important files that we are unable to access now.
I wasn't involved with this transfer, so I'm trying to clean up the mess as best I can. I remembered that the customer's wife was Russian, and had some files typed with a Russian keyboard, so on and so forth. I wonder if that's the issue? If not, I really
have no idea how to manually extract things from a ".mig" file, or how to diagnose what area is potentially corrupted.
In light of this situation, we tried using "Recuva" to recover the files post-wipe, but everything was corrupted or unable to be opened, and it also extracted and recovered all of the "useless" photos, such as the skype logos, up and
down arrows for browsers, etc (it was 160,000+ photos).
Trying to avoid a potential lawsuit, unhappy customer, and costing the company lots of money to see if professionals can get into this external hard drive.
    Other relevant information:
We used a Toshiba 500 GB (465 GB) external hard drive.
Customer's computer is an HP Pavilion P6000 Series (Model No. p6520y) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1.
Any other information that is needed can be provided, thanks in advance, and hopefully we can find a solution to this issue quickly!
    -John

I think there's a lack of understanding somewhere.
"If you even can't start the process, please unplug it from your new PC. Then head back to your new computer and plug
the external drive back in to your new computer. "
Unplug from new, head back to new, plug it back in? That doesn't make much sense! Haha.
I knew what you meant though, somewhat. When I search through the drives after clicking yes (Has windows easy transfer
already saved your files blah blah blah) I click on the transfer file and it says "Windows Easy Transfer could not open the file".
Rather than drag-and-drop the file to the desktop, I now tried to double-click on the file itself while it was plugged
into the computer. It opened, and it started transferring until it was about 70% completed, and then an error popped up saying "WET can't open the easy transfer file, make sure your USB device is plugged in or check your internet connection".
I checked, and the USB hard drive's light wasn't on. Now, I unplug it and plug it back in, and the light comes back on,
so I click Retry, and it resets the bar back to nothing and says "Transfer time: 1 minute".
Rather than continue trying, I clicked "Cancel" instead of Retry, and it says "Your transfer did not complete successfully."
It says to click "view report" for more information, but there's no "view report button".
At the moment, I am scanning the External Drive for bad sectors using the check disk tool in properties. It's frozen
    at "0 USN bytes processed".

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

    Merry Christmas

Repartition and format the drive for a Mac:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Getting a new Mac: need to transfer files/applications, have external hard drive, and wipe clean old Mac to give to family member

Getting a new Mac this Christmas. I have several questions:
    1. How do I transfer files/applications from old to new?
    2. I have an external hard drive, do I need to save iTunes account to it?
    3. How do I wipe the old Mac clean to give to family member?

    1. Use the Migration Assistant the first time you turn on the new computer.
    2. No, but you should do so as a backup.
    3. Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C or Option key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.
