Transfer i-tunes content from Windows to Mac

After being a life long PC user my wife just bought me a Mac Book Pro. How difficult, or should I let the Apple Store techs transfer all my songs, movies, apps from my I-tunes on my Windows PC to my Mac Book? I have back up DVDs of my songs in I-Tunes if that would help. I never backed up my movies, which I know I should do ASAP! Any help and/or suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.

The Apple store will transfer all your user data, not only the media files.

  • What's the best way to transfer my iTunes music from windows to mac?

I ordered my first Macbook which will get here on Monday, August 13, 2012. This is my first Macbook so I need a little help transferring my music over to my new laptop from my current Windows laptop. Is my best option just using home sharing? I did a Google search which turned up home sharing but I wanted to come on here to see if it is in fact my best route. I'd like to transfer all my music (2500 songs) with the album artwork and info I've entered. I'm a little picky about my music so I'd like everything to transfer over. Thanks in advance.

Reading that article I have just one concern. In the notes section it says,
"This process will create a new user account on your Mac to contain the Windows PC information that is migrated over.  It will not merge the information with an existing user account on your Mac."
I don't want to have two accounts that I have to switch back and forth between.
You don't have to switch between accounts. Just use the new account.
If you start up and then add a new, 2nd account with the imported info, you can just use this new account. Either keep the first account as an admin user or delete it.
If I do this the first time I start the computer will I be able to have just one account?
    Yes.
    I have two accounts.
One only for admin stuff and another for my regualr, day-to-day use.

  • I need to transfer an iTunes library from Windows to Mac. .with a catch.

The catch is, I have a Mac formatted iPod, so if I understand correctly, I can't use it as an external drive to take the library from the Windows machine.
Anyway. . I'm buying my fiancee a MacBook, and obviously she wants her iTunes library from her Windoze machine. Her iPod is a nano, so it's not large enough capacity to transfer her whole library to her new MacBook.
So. . how do I get her music on her MacBook?
    Thanks!
    Dave

One way would to be to re-format the ipod for windows, enable disk usage, copy her existing library, then transfer to the mac ( the mac will read a window formatted ipod). Otherwise, if you have the ability I suggest networking the 2 computers, (macs & pc's can be networked together without a lot of trouble) an transfer via ethernet.

  • Transfer a shared file from windows to mac

I need to get a file over to my MacBook that's on my Windows machine. I did it a while ago using sftp but I can't remember how I did it. The computer shows up under the Shared sidebar as family but then it asks me for a user name and password. What user name and password do they mean? I have no account passwords on the windows machine and it won't let me go in as a guest. Could anyone help me fix this.

You need to setup a shared folder on the windows machine with guest privileges. You can put that file in the shared folder and access it without a password from your Mac.

  • How can I transfer my photoshop elements information (catalog, etc.) from Windows to Mac

I have been using photoshop elements for year. I'm currently using version 11 on Windows 7. I'm considering switching to a Mac and getting version 12 there. But before I do that, I want to make sure that there is a way to convert or transfer the catalog and the pictures and videos from Windows to Mac. Any help is appreciated.

Sure. Basically you just do a full backup in windows using the organizer backup command and then restore it to the mac.

Is Apple compatible with Microsoft Office?
Any computer is compatible as long as it can read and write Office files. But for perfect (or at least near perfect) compatibility, you would want to purchase Office 2011 for Mac.
How can I transport from Windows to Mac?
You can't directly transport any installation of Windows. All PC's come with a machine specific version of Windows intended for that PC. They don't have all of the hardware drivers the retail disks cover.
If you want Windows on your Mac, you would first purchase a full version copy (NOT an upgrade disk) of Windows 7 or 8. Those are the only supported versions on newer Macs. You install it through the supplied Boot Camp utility that comes with the Mac to create a new partition for Windows, and then install the retail copy of Windows you purchased.
The reason only these versions of Windows are supported is the same basic reason as a machine specific version of Windows for a PC. Apple only includes the necessary Mac hardware drivers for Win 7 or 8 on new Macs.
Once Windows is installed, you could then install the version of Office for Windows you already own. The nuisance of a Boot Camp partition is that you have to physically boot to either Windows or OS X, so you can only use the apps of the OS you're in at the time. To use both at once, you'd have to use virtual machine software (Parallels, VMware, VirtualBox) and then install Windows within that. Then you'd be able to run Windows inside of OS X and have access to both at the same time.

how do I transfer contents from my old mac back up disk

See this excellent write-up by Pondini ( a regular here, and resident Time Machine expert) on setting up a new Mac from a TM backup from an old machine.

It describes using Setup Assistant, a much better way than using Migration Assistant in creeating a seamless transition of your old applications, data files, and users. Normally you only have one opportunity to use it, upon first boot of your MacBook.

  • How do I change my iPod from Windows to Mac ?

When I got my IPod, my music was on a windows computer. Now I have a MacBook Pro and want to convert my Ipod nano to the Mac. How can I do this as I am new to the IPod and very new to the MacBook?

Connect it to your Mac and restore it. Just be aware that restoring will erase and reformat the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7
If you haven't transferred the music from your PC to the Mac and you have any iTMS purchases on your iPod the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • IPod classic - switching from Windows to Mac

I have an iPod classic and am switching from Windows to Mac - what's the best way to retain my iPod library? Thanks!

If you just want to connect and use the iPod on the Mac then set it to manual update on your PC first. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
Macs can read Windows drives, the iPod shuffle for instance comes Windows formatted and is fully supported (you can update the firmware or restore it on the Mac and it retains it's Windows formatting). Other iPods (such as a 5th Generation or Classic for example) can be used in Windows format on a Mac but have to have the firmware updated or be restored on a PC to maintain the formatting. If however you don't intend using the iPod on a PC again you'll need to transfer your library from your PC so you can restore and reformat the iPod and keep it's firmware updated.
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your new iTunes directly from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • Convert iPod from Windows to Mac

I've been using my iPod (30GB) with Windows and am just now switching everything to a new MacBook Pro. Do I need to do anything to switch my iPod from Windows to Mac, or does it just sync with the new Mac without my having to do anything?

Macs can read Windows formatting so your iPod should work Fine on your MacBook. However if you don't intend using the iPod on Windows again you should consider restoring it and formatting it on the Mac. If you keep it in Windows format you'll have to connect it back to a PC to make any firmware updates otherwise the formatting will be changed. One other thing, if you haven't transferred your music from the PC to the Mac you won't be able to sync the iPod if you do you'll lose what's on it. To be sure you don't accidentally erase the content you should set the iPod to manual update until your music is on the Mac.
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to your new computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. You should then be able to change your settings: iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX
Just some additional information in regard to moving the music from your iPod in case you no longer have the PC. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7 A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.
