Transfer info from one mac to another

I'm having problems with transfering data between my macbook (old) and my macbook pro (new) they are both in perfect running order. I have been trying to use target disk mode but I have been totally unsuccessful. I can't find my photo or my itunes libraries. Also Migration Assistant has been totally useless because it doesn't read the information that I know is there. Someone please help!!!! what am I doing wrong?!?!?!?

You say you can't find your photo and music libraries. Is that only when the older computer is connected to the newer one in FireWire TDM and you're looking for them from the new one, or can you not find them even when you're using the older machine in the usual way? Are they not in Hard drive > Users > your Home folder > Pictures and Music, respectively? If not, do you remember moving them out of your Home folder?
If they don't appear to be in those locations, which is where they belong, and you haven't moved them, then I suspect there may be some directory damage on your older machine's hard drive. With the older machine connected as the Target to your newer machine, open Disk Utility on the new machine and use its Repair Disk function to repair the older machine's hard drive directory. Post back with results.

  • How to transfer Signatures from one Mac to another

In Mail, if I go to Preferences > Signatures, I see in the left column *All Signatures*, and signatures for various accounts.
How would I transfer the signatures in *All Signatures* from one Mac to another?
The names of files in the folder ~/Library/Mail/Signatures are all cryptic.
Moreover, since each signature is tied to a certain account, I don't think that I can just copy these files into the Signature folder of the 2nd Mac.

Simply moving these cryptic files did not work, in the sense that these signatures did not show up in the right-most column of the Signatures pane.
I made sure that I did not move the SignaturesByAccount.plist file in the ~/Library/Mail/Signatures folder.
So, would someone please share with me how to transfer signatures from one Mac to another, with both running Mail?

  • Can you transfer apps from one Mac to another?

I have both a desktop Power PC G5 running Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) on which I sync my iPod Touch and have all my apps, movies etc. I also have an Intel MacBook Pro running Leopard (with no link to the iPod Touch). If I buy an iPad, how do I sync the apps/movies I've either paid for or downloaded free? I see in the tech spec for the iPad says that it is only compatible with Mac 10.5 onwards. So it possible to transfer the apps from one machine (desktop) to the other (laptop) and then sync with the iPad, and what do you have to do? Thanks, in advance, for your help on this one.

You go to your original Mac and Deauthorise the computer, then you go to your nw computer and re-authorise it with he same iTunes account and you should be able to download all your Apps again for free.
Syncing will of course delete all the media content on the iPad and replace it with the media content from the newer computer so you may wish to move your library at the same time.

  • What is the quickest way to transfer data from one Mac to another?

I just bought a Macbook Air, and using the Migration Assitant, it says that it will take 32 hours to transfer data from my old Macbook to the Macbook Air.
There must be a quicker way! What happens if I abort?

Unless you can use Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode, the fastest means is to use a Time Machine backup from an external drive, using the quickest port you have compatible with that drive.
However, I would NEVER, ever use Migration Asssistant for a new Mac from an old one. Setup Assistant is exponentially better, even if you have to start over.

  • Can I transfer albums from one Mac to another, while preserving ...

    Hi
I have two macs with different photos on each one, although many are the same. I have made several albums in folders on one mac with keywords, titles, and now wish to bring them over to my other mac, so I don't have to repeat all that work.
How can i do it and what happens when the same files are on both?
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can do that with the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. Connect the two Macs so iPLM can view both libraries and you can either copy Events from Library A to LIbrary B and keep all metadata while excluding duplicates.
Or you can use iPLM to merge Library A and Library B into a new Library C again keeping all metadata and excluding duplicates.

  • How do I transfer all info from one Mac to another?

A few months ago I bought a new MacBook Pro, and want to use my old one as a backup. How do I transfer all the info on the new one to the old one? Got a firewire, if that helps.  OS 10.8.2 on both.

We all confuse with your question.
You all confused? Well, I clear things up! Sorry... I be unclear...
Recently my old MacBook crashed while I was in LA, and I bought a new one almost identical to us. I have to have a working Mac when I'm out of town making presentations. So...yeah, I guess I want to format the old one like a Time Machine disk...so that when the new one crashes or won't open up for some mysterious reason, I can go to the old one and use it. Both have the latest OS, and there's plenty of room on the old disk for the info. Any reason I could't do that? I'd prefer to do it as quickly as possible...not do individual documents, etc.

  • How do I transfer Keychains from one mac to another mac?

I recently got a new imac. I choose during the set-up process for the new imac to pass on pulling "all" the old information from my old G4 mac as there was stuff I just did not want to move and then have to find and delete on the new mac. However I would like to bring over specific items such as keychains.
What is the best method to move my keychains from my old mac to my new one? I have tried several method that did not work.

KT & V.T good suggestion which I had done previously what I missed was not only making sure the passwords were the same (changed my login password on the new imac). Also I was apparently only doing 1/2 of the process as I would use Keychain to create the new keychains but as soon as I disconnected from the G4 the new login in file went blank.
    Here was my complete process.
On my g4 imac the one that had the keychain info for my new imac. I made a duplicate of the file and renamed them so I would know where they came from and they would not conflict with current login file. I then moved them to my public folder users/yourname/library/keychain on the G4.
On my new mac I move those files from the G4 public folder into my new mac users/yourname/library/keychain. Then I opened Keychain access and in the file menu selected Add Keychain navigated to the above volume and selected the old keychain.
Any other process than this left me with empty login folder once I disconnected from my old G4.
Thanks again to KT & V.T who made me read and think a little more about what I needed to do.

  • How do i transfer purchases from one mac to another?

when i try and sync my iphone to my new macbook pro it keeps on saying it is going to delete all of the stuff off of my iphone and sync it with the stuff from the itunes library on this new mac. so essentially its going to delete everything off and im going to have nothing on my phone and i dont know how im going to transfer all of my stuff from my old mac to my new one.

On the computer that is saying it wants to erase your phone, choose Store > Authorize this Computer... and enter the Apple ID and password of your iPhone.

  • Haw much time needed to transfer data from one mac to another throughout FireWire

It has been 15 hours since I started transferring data from my old mac to my new one and I cant get throughout the process any tip about the estimated time the amount of data in GB is around 200

That does seem too long for a 200GB transfer, even via FireWire 400. I suspect there's a problem on one of the hard drives that is preventing some data from being read or written successfully. I would cancel the copy process and use Disk Utility to run its Repair Disk routine on each of the drives.

I have an IMAC and I want to transfer some of my applications to my newly referbished Mac Book Pro.  The problem is that when I use Migration Assistant, I am unable to choose which applications I want to migrate, the Mac Book is unable to migrate the entire library, due to the size of its hard drive.  I hope there is a way do this.  Help, Please!
