  • Unsuccessful data transfer onto my new macbook pro- please help

I have just upgraded to a new 2.16GHz core 2 duo macbook pro and tried last night to transfer my data via firewire using the apple start up set up from my previous 1.83GHz core duo macbook pro bought in March 2006. Unfortunately there were errors in transferring my user folder. I subsequently used migration assistant with the old macbook pro in target disc mode and the same error occurred. I have now manually transferred my user folders by dragging them from the target disc old macbook pro drive into my new user folders in the HD of the new macbook pro. Please can anyone advise me whether this is all I need to do to have my user files on the new macbook pro ie are there any other files I should move over from the old to new computer? The applications transferred in the initial set up and several folders in my HD and it seems only the user folders didn't.
Can someone explain why this happened also please? I have checked the new HD with disc utility and it has no errors.
I have transferred files from several powerbooks in the past using the initial set up or migration assistant and haven't had problems like this before? I wonder whether the new computer is faulty? Please can anyone advise? Thanks

You can only sync the iPhone with one Mac or PC, so your Mac is asking you to erase the device because you synced it with another Mac or PC. To avoid this, I recommend you to copy the "iTunes" folder of your old Mac or PC (in Music folder) to the Music folder of your Mac, so you'll have the same data on your Mac as the data you had on the PC.
To transfer contacts, notes, etc., I recommend iCloud > http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

  • Transfer data to new macbook pro via timemachine external harddrive?

My old macbook pro from 2006, osx (mountain?) lion, has totally broken down now. The screen is black on start up and I think its time is up. I've made saves and backed it up regularly to an external harddrive. If I buy a new macbook pro with yosemite - will I be able to retrieve all the data from the old external harddrive? Could I use an Ipad to access any data?

Yes, you should be able to do that if the backup is a Time Machine backup by using the Time Machine application on your new computer or migrating your data from the Setup Assistant that starts up on your new Mac when you first turn it on. I recommend either approach. You can, at a later time if you wish, use Migration Assistant to transfer your data from the Time Machine backup.

  • 2006 MacBook Pro died, best methods to transfer data to new MacBook Pro

So my Rev. A MacBook Pro 2.16Ghz intel core duo finally died, looks like something on the logic board. So I bought a brand new 2011 2.2Ghz MacBook Pro. I have purchase and On The Go 2.5 inch enclosure from OWC, it's a USB device. the old hard drive is now in the enclosure, and I'm awaiting delivery tomorrow, of the new MacBook Pro.
My question is, what would be the best method to transfer old files. I want to start fresh with library and system files, as well as email IMAP files. my main concern is applications.
Can I simply drag the actual app from the old app folder to the new app folder? Will it bring along with it preferences and settings? Or do I need all the .DMG files to install the app into the new MBP?
Apps like; Audiohub, Connect360, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro. honestly there are so many more that I can't remember right now.
    Thanks in advance.

You can attempt to manually move these files but if it doesn't work then just migrating the whole user and deleting the items you don't want might be the way to go.
Copy the following files from the old HD to their matching location on the new computer and then restart the computer before you launch any of these applications:
Safari:  Users / Your User / Library / Safari
iCal:  Users / Your User / Library / Calendars
Addressbook: Users / Your User / Application Support / Addressbook
iChat : Users / Your User / Library / Preferences / com.apple.ichat (there may be more than one of these files.  copy them all over)
I don't use Skype so I don't know exactly where they store their files but checking in Users / Your User / Library / Skype would be a logical place to start.  You can certainly ask in the Skype forum: http://forum.skype.com/
Adobe products tend to have bits and pieces scattered throughout.  There may be a simple solution but I would suggest you inquire in the Adobe forums: http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/photoshop_macintosh
    Best of luck!

  • Transfer data to new macbook pro

Hi I have purchase a new MacBook Pro and would like to transfer everything  to the new one. The old MacBook Pro will be given to my friend so I would like to delete all personal files settings etc
    Thanks
    Elijah

Connect the two via Firewire cable. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire; boot the new computer normally. You should see a disk icon for your old computer's drive on the new computer's Desktop.
Open Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder of the new computer. Follow onscreen instructions for migrating your data to the new computer.
When finished and all is well do the following:
    Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer.  After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab.  Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button.  Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button.  Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive.  If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive.  The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive.  After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Now complete the OS X installation.  At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer.  Instead just shut it off.  The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • HT201269 old ipod transfer content to new Macbook pro

I am trying to transfer music from my ipod touch to my new macbook pro but i am unable to download the music from the ipod to the itunes on my macbook. any ideas??

For non-Tunes purchased music you need a third-party program like one of those discussed in the above.

  • Transfer ownership of new macbook pro

    Hi
A relative kindly purchased a macbook pro from the Refurb store as well as AppleCare for me and had it shipped directly to me.
Now even though at first switch-on I created a new Apple ID, as the billing name/address is his I am assuming the machine is registered to him?
How do I arrange for ownership of this machine be registered over to me?
Am I correct in assuming once this if done I then register AppleCare for this machine to my name/AppleID as well?
When I logged into Apple with the ID that I use on the machine it says there are no products registered with with this ID
As I am the proud new owner of a Macbook I would like to do things properly - thanks

    Thanks
Rang them today (72min wait!) and the MBP has been safely transferred across apparently (need to find where I log in to manage my devices).
The AppleCare warranty I have to ring them again to sort and it needs the manual team to do it apparently as it was bought for me in the US and my address is UK.
Perhaps I should have registered it first and transferred both across together

Time Machine or other disk (Target Disk mode makes it look like an external HD).

  • How do I transfer my printer preset settings to my new Macbook Pro?

I have created several printer presets on my G5 that I want to transfer to my new MacBook Pro,I don't want to have to recreate them. What is the correct way to get them onto my MacBook Pro?
Thank You in advance for reading and replying to my post,

Like all your other files and settings, they will transfer over when you use the Migration Assistant.
I just tried using Migration Assistant at setup for a lab image. The printer didn't "completely" transfer to the new machine. I say "completely" because, if you go to ~/Library/Printers, you'll see the named printer there, but it doesn't show up in Print & Fax nor does it show up in any print dialog boxes.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Transfer info from Ibook G4 10.3.9 to new MacBook Pro

    Hi
How do I transfer files from my Ibook G4 10.3.9 to a new MacBook Pro? There is no migration assistant on 10.3.9. I have tried a firewire cable but it doesn't recognise the old computer.
    Help appreciated.
    Thanks Kay

If firewire cables don't work then I would do it manually via a 4 gb flash drive. But follow this article for info:

I can't transfer my info from my old Macbook (Year 2006) to my new MacBook Pro. The Fire Wire Cable changed !
Excuse my English, I am French writing from Paris, France
    Thanks

All you need, if you've the non-Retina model, is a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable -> such as this one from Amazon.
I know that there's a UK Amazon - can you order from there? Or is there a French Amazon as well?
    Good luck,

  • HT4796 I'm transfering info from my old pc to my new macbook pro, using Windows Migration Assistant. All was fine but has now lost connection (wifi) and won't reconnect. Mac is showing transfer window and I cant escape, I'm new to mac.

You'll need to erase the drive by booting up holding command-option-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
Use Disk Utility to erase the disk and then Internet Recovery. That will take a while.

  • How can I transfer my old laptop hard drive info onto a partition on my new macbook pro

is this possible? i want to transfer my windows OS with all my files etc onto a partition on my new macbook pro, but i dont know if i can do it or how to go about it.
any help would be really appreciated.
could it be as simple as using the macbook as a hard drive plugged into my laptop via USB and dragging and dropping the C:/ drive into the available space?

If you want to run Windows then you need to install a new Windows copy.
I'd assume your copy is OEM and tied to the laptop unless you bought retail copy and won't use the laptop again (or sell it with Windows OS to someone else).

  • New Macbook and unable to transfer info from old Mackbook pro

I got a new Macbook pro and I'm have been unable to transfer any information from the "old" macbook pro to the new one.
I tried the migration assistant via firewire took several hours to finish later the new computer restart and brought me agin to the setup page asking me to migrate again, I did it twice and it kept happening.
Later I tried to use a backup from the time machine, after some time the new computer erased all the backups from the time machine.
What can i do? Which files can you move? Do I have to reinstall everything?

Are you using a cable like this one or an adapter like this? If you're using the latter then many people have reported troubles, however the former works quite well.
You can also use Time Machine to restore, so if your old machine is hooked up to an external HD setup for TM use that.
I'd recommend you look over Pondini's overview on Setup Assistant Tips.
