Transfer iPhoto library to time capsule

How do I use Time Capsule as a network drive to host my photos or if not photos, my music?

The experts in the iPhoto forum strongly advise against moving your "main" iPhoto library to the Time Capsule due to the likelihood of corruption issues.
Please post over in the iPhoto support area if you need more details about this.
Although I do not recommend that  you do this, information about how to move your iTunes Media Folder to the Time Capsule is in this Apple Support Document:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
But, before you do this......do you have a plan as to how will you backup this important data once you have moved the folder to the Time Capsule?
If you have a Time Capsule problem, you will lose everything unless you have a backup on another hard drive for this important iTunes data.
A better plan might be this.......add an external USB or FireWire hard drive to your Mac and move your iPhoto and iTunes data to that drive. Then Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the external hard drive.
So, you have backups for everything.

  • Access iPhoto library in time capsule

    Hello,
I have my iPhoto library in time capsule. Everything is ok with my mac, view, edit, stream, etc.
But some times I dont bring my Mac home, and I would like access my library from my iPad and if possible stream to apple tv, like i do it from Mac.
Since its not possible to access my library with iPhoto for iOS, is there any app that does it?
    Thanks,
    ruirego

No.  The two iPhoto apps have only their name in common.  There's no interaction between the two possible. You can send a feature requres to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/.

  • Can't Access iphoto Library on Time Capsule

I can’t access one of my iphoto’s library on time capsule. I tried the permission keys- alt+cmd- fix and the Caution warning still pops up. All my libraries are working fine, but this particular one hasn’t allow me to enter the permissions fix window despite is set up as a default library- Your help much appreciate it. Thanks!

Have you opened this one over a wireless connection in the past?
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

  • Restore just iPhoto Library from Time Capsule, to a new machine

    Hi,
To free up space on my MacBook Pro, I backed up my iPhoto library to Time Machine before moving the library to a seperate external hard-drive.  My EHD was excluded from automatic time machine backups, and when it subsequently got unrepairably damaged about 4 weeks later I lost about 4 weeks of photos - luckily not a big problem. I checked time-machine and my old iPhoto library was still there in an earlier backup, not the latest - naturally that shows the current state of my MPB without an iPhoto library.
Now, I'm trying to restore the iPhoto library to a Mac Mini rather than to my MacBook Pro, however, I'm not having much luck.  I've tried the following:
Use migration assistant, selecting only photos - this created a new account, (even though I didn't want it to) but the photo library was blank.  I think this may be because my last time-machine back up was after I'd moved iPhoto to an EHD
Use finder to navigate to the correct iPhoto folder in time-machine... I get an error message saying I don't have permission to access the file
I have used the same apple ID when setting up the the Mac Mini as I did on the MBP, but the accounts have slightly different names.
I would appreciate any help you could give.

Setup Assistant would be my recommendation for this if possible.
Migration Assistant  can work, but there may be some issues with file ownership and permissions.

  • Help! How can I restore iTunes/iPhoto library from Time Capsule to new Mac?

Sorry to trouble you, because it looks like this should be an easy thing, but I can't find an answer anywhere...
I've got an 2008 MacBook Pro that suddenly began to suffer start up problems. Sometimes it boots to a black/grey screen and sometimes the screen/mouse freezes after only a few minutes of use.
I've borrowed my brother's Mac until I can find out how to get mine repaired, so I'd like to copy over my iTunes and iPhoto stuff from a Time Capsule (where I'm hoping it hasn't been damaged) to his Mac. I only want to copy the iTunes and iPhoto stuff, without filling up his computer with all my other junk.
Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks!

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)

  • How do I restore an iPhoto library from Time Capsule

My iMac was stolen. I have a MacBook Air running Yosemite version 10.10.2. The iPhoto Library was not on the MacBook. How do I restore my iPhoto Library from a Time Machine backup on my Time Capsule onto my MacBook? I am using iPhoto version 9.6.1.
    Two complications:
    1. I have several hundred photos from a different iPhoto library on my MacBook.
    2. I think the iPhoto library that is hopefully on my Time Capsule is too big to fit on my MacBook. I have 50 GB free space remaining on a 256 GB SSD.
    Thank you.

If the library to be restored is too big for your boot drive you'll need to get an external HD, formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored, and restore the iPhoto Library to it according to the instructions in the following screenshot:
With the restored library up and running you can use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to merge the Macbook library into the restored library on the EHD.  A possible candidate for the EHD is the  OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro USB 3.0 / FireWire 800.  It lends itself nicely for portable use.
Once you are satisfied that the merge was successful you can delete the Macbook library from the Pictures folder.

  • How do i back up my iphoto library to time capsule?

I was told I can back up my iphoto's library to my time capsule but I'm not sure how to do this.  Any help is appreciated.

If you've set up Time Machine to back up your computer to it and haven't moved the library off the internal drive, it's already been done.
If you've set up Time Machine to back up your computer to it and have moved the library off the internal drive, ensure the drive holding it isn't excluded in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.
If you haven't set up Time Machine, either turn it on or drag the iPhoto library from the Pictures item of your home folder to the Time Capsule manually.

  • Can I store an iPhoto library on Time Capsule?

I would like to store my iPhoto library externally. Can I store it on my Time Capsule or do I need an additional, external hard drive?

I would like to store my iPhoto library externally. Can I store it on my Time Capsule
    Please do NOT do this.
Access to the library will be very slow, even more so if you are using wireless. More importantly, there is a real danger that any break in communication between iPhoto and the iPhoto library will create a corruption issue that will likely affect the entire library, rendering it useless. Confirm with the experts in the iPhoto support area about this to verify.
    iPhoto
In addition, if you move the iPhoto library to the Time Capsule......have you thought about how you will back up the iPhoto library that is on the Time Capsule? Obviously, you will still need another hard drive to backup the "original" iPhoto library on the Time Capsule.
A much better plan would be to connect a USB or FireWire drive directly to your Mac.....and move the iPhoto library to that hard drive. Access to the library will be fast....just as if the library was on your Mac's hard drive.
Then.....Time Machine can be set up to back up both your Mac and the hard drive to the Time Capsule.  That would be a minimum backup plan. Many of us who value our images make additional copies of the library on yet another hard drive on a regular basis.

  • How do I upgrade my iPhoto library on Time Capsule?

I am using a 20-inch iMac from mid 2007, iOS 10.10.1, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB and I have my entire iPhoto library located my Time Capsule (which is connected to my computer via ethernet cable).  Since upgrading to Yosemite I upgraded (and subsequently re-installed) the newest version of iPhoto. The small iPhoto library on my computer upgraded just fine and works very well, but the large iPhoto library located on my Time Capsule will not upgrade. When I attempt to open the library located on the Time Capsule, a window appears saying, "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." I click "upgrade." Then a small window appears that says, "examining photo library."  The program freezes at this point, and within just a few minutes, iPhoto closes out entirely.  I have attempted this multiple times over the past two months with no success.  I moved iPhoto to the trash and reinstalled it, as some had recommended, but to no avail.  I don't know which version of iPhoto I previously had.  Any thoughts from all you very intelligent people out there?

An iPhoto Library cannot be on a Networked location.

  • Setting up iPhoto Library on Time Capsule

Why can't I select a folder on my Time Capsule as my iPhoto Library. My end goal here is to have no local files on my laptop.

How are you accessing your Time Capsule? When you say that you can not select it, what happens?
In general iPhoto is not good with wireless access to the iPhoto library - and you are likely to be unhappy with the speed even if you get it working and even if you never have a network dropout due to the wireless connection
You are most likely to be happy with a wired conneciton and NOT sharing a partition with Time Machine (Time machine expects that it can fill the disk it is on which will eventually cause iPhoto problems)

  • Sending Entire iPhoto Library to Time Capsule

My MacBook Pro is almost full! I want to free up space by sending my almost 40 GB of data from my iPhoto library to my 2 TB Time Capsule! help please!

Apple says specifically DO NOT DO IT. Plug in a USB drive or other faster disk if you can afford it.. and put the iphoto library on that. If you move the iphoto library to the TC A. It will be corrupted. B. It cannot be backed up.. and you will lose the entire thing.
    iphoto network no no.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.

  • Unable to copy iphoto library to time capsule

I have a 24Gb iPhoto library that is saved on my macbook pro hard drive.  I connect to the time capule vía wifi N.  Everything I transfer via wifi copies extremely fast except the iPhoto library.  Initially the copy process is fast but halts at 125Mb and then sits there doing nothing.  I can copy the library to an external drive connected via USB and is copies fine and quickly.  I have tried to copy the library in terminal instead of finder but the same happens.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks in advance

I don't think has anything to do with speed or the connection. The iPhoto Library has hundreds (and hundreds and hundreds...) of files within it and all you need is for one of these to have incorrect permissions on it for you to have a problem.
However, in that case you would normally get some kind of error message (often a -35 error). So what I don't understand is why you're not getting some sort of communication.
Try use a back up app to copy the Library over : Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    See how that gets on.

  • Trouble restoring iPhoto library from Time Machine in OSX 10.9

i recently got a new iMac and am trying to restore my iPhoto library from time capsule on an external hard drive.  my previous macbook with the original library was stolen so the external drive is my only hope of recovering years of photos.
i have tried going into time machine and restoring the iPhoto library.  iPhoto shows several of my albums but zero photos.  i have tried looking for the masters file but it appears empty.  both times, the file size is significant though nothing appears.  i am not sure what else to try.

    This article should help:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4927
    In particular, note this paragraph:
iPhoto may prompt you to repair your library if there are some inconsistencies in your files. If so, please allow it to proceed by clicking the Repair button. If you notice blank thumbnails, reopen iPhoto while holding down the Command and Option keys. When the Rebuild iPhoto Library window appears, enable the "Rebuild all of the photos’ thumbnails" checkbox. This may take a long time, depending on the size of the library.

  • Transfer iphoto library to external harddrive. Best practice?

Need to transfer iphoto library to external harddrive due to space issues. Best practice?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
