Transfer iPhoto & videos on external hard drive

I Have tried transferring my iPhoto library to ext hard drive.
2 Issues
1. iPhoto is quitting unexpectedly & repeatedly during the transfer. Have only 3 gb space left in internal hard drive.
2. There is not set event order in external hard drive, all photos are just jumbled up (the ones that have been transferred)
ANy help would be much appreciated

iPhoto is not involved in moving the library - and 3GB is far below the minimum required 10GB
To move the iphoto library
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

need to transfer iphoto library to external passport drive. It will not let me drag and drop

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The external drive is formatted in NTFS, a format that OS X can't write in. You have to erase the external disk.
First, open Finder, choose the external drive in the sidebar, under "Devices", and copy all the content of your external drive to another folder like Desktop.
Then, follow these steps to format the external drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, drag the iPhoto library to the external drive

  • How do I transfer iphoto library to external hard drive keeping events intact?

Had a one to one session but forgot how to do this. I would like to transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive keeping the folders and events intact. I figured out how to send all my photos to the hard drive but they all transfer in single images, if that makes sense, and then i have to go thru all of the 15,000 images by hand and sort them into folders. Ahhhhhhh!
When they showed me how to do this at apple I am able to open my external hard drive and see a folder labled 'iphotolibrary" and  I am able to click it open and then all my events show up just like in iphoto library.
Also does your iphoto library "Trash" take up space on your HD? Forgve me if thats a dumb question but I am kind of a computer "dummy".
thanks so much. My hard drive has VERY little space left on it so I need to transfer ASAP.

I just posted this to another topic, but it applies here as well. Hopefully there's no prohibition on cross-posting on this board, my apologies to all if there is:
"I haven't read the whole thread, so someone could have already mentioned this, but I did the same thing, move my music library to an external drive. The Help articles are helpful, but only up to a point. When that didn't work, I called up AppleCare support up, and they took me through all the standard steps, and got stumped at the same point I did. Finally she suggested trying something, and that ended up doing the trick. So here in brief is what you do:
    1) Copy over your "iTunes Music" folder to the external hard drive
    2) Go into Advanced preferences to have iTunes look for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. If you're like me, your music won't appear in the Library.
    3) In iTunes, go to the Library window (which is probably blank), then in a Finder window, find the icon for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. Drag that icon onto the Library window.
You should now see a progress window pop up showing all the songs that it's populating the Library window with."

  • Can't transfer iPhoto Library FROM external hard drive to iMac

I just bought a new iMac.  Before I said goodbye to my old computer (a MacBook), I dutifully backed up my iPhoto library onto an external hard drive.  Upon setting up my iMac, I easily accessed the iPhoto library on my HD, but I didn't import it.  I was able to see all photos, albums, etc.
But when I went to import the entire iPhoto library into my iMac's hard drive (into the Pictures folder), it wouldn't import.  A mesage comes up that says "Preparing to copy" and the blue-and-white bar just spins and spins, without actually copying anything.  So, it's weird -- there's clearly communication between iMac and external HD, but I can't take the iPhoto library off the hard drive to make it my new computer's iPhoto library.
    Any hints?  Thanks.

Have you tried restarting your machine?

  • Moving Iphoto and Go Pro videos to external hard drive to free up memory on my MAC

    Hi,
My Mac memory is nearly full, mostly from Go Pro Videos and photos, I have dragged my iphoto library to my 1TB external hard drive but when I go to delete from my iphoto library it also deletes from the iphoto on the external hard drive? I am looking to keep Iphoto and Go Pro vids on my external to free up space on the MAC, but want to access and edit them as normal when the external hard drive is plugged in?
    Many thanks

    Hi klatham15,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to move your iPhoto Library to your external hard drive so you can remove it from your internal drive and free up internal hard drive space.
Please make sure you have followed the steps in this article and "re-linked" iPhoto to the new location.
iPhoto: How to move the Library folder to a new location - Apple Support
Of course when it is properly pointing to the external hard drive, deleting content from iPhoto will delete it from the external drive.
    Take care,

I needed memory to upgrade so I exported all of my iphoto to an external hard drive. I then deleted and emptied the trash. The photos are fine but the videos are blank. Is there any way to recover the videos? Any software recovery programs apple supported?

no official way but if you open the Apple TV and put the hd in the external case it should mount and give you access to the data on it

  • How do I get the pictures from my iPhoto on my external Hard Drive to show up in the already existing iPhoto on my MacBook?

I have an early 2008 MacBook. I had been using iPhoto on this MacBook until I purchased an iMac in 2011, at which time I copied my iPhoto Library from my MacBook to my iMac. Then I realized that my pictures and music were consuming the memory on my iMac, so I moved iPhoto and my iTunes LIbrary to an external Hard Drive. Now I am in a situation where I do not have access to my iMac, but will need to use my MacBook as my main computer for the next year. So, I have my iPhoto on an external hard drive and I plug it into my MacBook and see the iPhoto Library folder, but when I click on it, it opens up the old iPhoto that is still existing on my MacBook and will not show any of the new pictures?! At first I thought it wasn't able to show up anything because my MacBook was running two operating systems behind what my iMac was when I was running my iPhoto Library from that computer. So, I upgraded to OS X 10.7.5 and upgraded the existing iPhoto on my MacBook to iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3. However whenever I plug in the external hard drive and click on the iPhoto Library folder to open it up, it is still just opening up the already existing iPhoto on the MacBook (with my older pictures) rather than the iPhoto on the hard drive (with my newer pictures). How can I access my pictures that are on my external hard drive?

Thank you for your advice. I followed your directions, but came up with the same results. However, I did discover that whenever I open up the iPhoto Library that is already existing on my MacBook a certain set of pictures shows up. But then when I open up the iPhoto Library from the Hard drive another set of pictures shows up. BUT not ALL of my pictures are showing up on the iPhoto Library from the hard drive. At least the last two years of pictures are not showing up?! Actually, it appears that all the pictures are there from when I started using iPhoto about 5 years ago up until around the time that I got my iMac desktop computer and started using that (2 years ago). I have noticed that more recent videos I have made are showing up in a folder on the hard drive, but will not appear when I open up iMovie?! Any ideas on how to access my pictures from the last 2 years off of the hard drive???

    Hello,
I need help on how to transfer photos from an external hard drive (sumsung make) to my mac? If possible can you please tell me step by step, and also how I can post a video that was taken from my iPhone to facebook. It keeps telling me my video is being encoded, and then could not process. I must be dunce really. Your help is greatly appreciated.

What files are they? Is it a clone, a TM backup, or simply drag 'n drop?
If it's the latter, simply drag them back. If something else, please post back with detailed info.

I have moved my iPhoto to an external hard drive. so now I have to have the external hard drive connected to my laptop to view the photos.  Now when I want to import photos into iPhoto from my media card, I don't have room to connect both devices at the same time as the usb ports are side by side.  How do I import my photos from the media card to the external hard drive now?

First transfer the photos to a folder on your MacBook using Image Capture in your Utilities folder. Then move them to iPhoto.
BTW, you might want to invest in a cheap USB hub.

  • Transfering pictures from iphoto's to external hard drive

    Hi All,
Could someone help me as I'm going around in circles?
My hard drive is nearly full, so I need to transfer my photos from iphotos to my external hard drive and delete them on my powerbook. Everytime I either drag the 3200 pictures and drop into my hard drive or copy and paste it comes back saying one of my pictures is busy so it's unable to complete the process. And this stops the computer transfering any photos? I've tried moving the pictures in question, but then it quotes another picture?
Can anyone advise the best way to transfer photo's to my EHD without this challenge ocurring?
    I would appreciate any advise.
    Kind Regards
    Danny

It may be a terminology issue but Apple uses the word "import" for any transfer of photos from the phone to a computer (or to an external drive attached to a computer). http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
You can (I believe -- haven't tried it) import them directly to an external drive attached to a Mac by using Image Capture. Image Capture is in Lauchpad -- probably in the "Other" folder in Lauchpad. Easiest way to start it is via Spotlight Search. It can be set to open automatically when a phone or camera is connected by opening iPhoto and going to menu named iPhoto and opening Preferences.
With the phone connected, the bottom of the Image Capture window allows you to select where you want the photos to be saved.

  • How do you move a single album, and not the whole library, in iPhoto to an external hard drive?

How do you move a single album, and not the whole library, in iPhoto to an external hard drive?

File -> Export to a folder and copy it over.
That will give you a folder with the images. There is no way to move an album outside of iPhoto. You would need to have a library containing it.

  • I am trying to save photos from iphoto to an external hard drive

    Help!
I bought a "WD Elements" external hard drive to save photos and make more room on my Macbook Pro. I can't move pics from iphoto to my "WD Elements" hard drive . I've recently gone on a few vacations and have a few thousand pictures to download. I'd like to save them onto my computer and then my external hard drive, but would first like to place old pics from iphoto onto the external hard drive and I am unable to figure out how to do this. I've tried selecting pics and then dragging them into the "Elements" external device, but this is not working (a white circle with a line through it pops up, as if I am unable to do this). When I select pics and click export, a message says that it's unable to export these pics to the hard drive device.
    Please help! ~Thanks!

    1. What format is the external drive? It sounds like it's ina format that Macs can't write to. Is it a NAS or NTFS?
    2. Easiest thing: just move your iPhoto Library to the external
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Trying to copy iPhoto Library to external hard drive for backup.  Error message:  The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written (Error code -36).

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk.  If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • How do you transfer info from an external hard drive from a PC to a Mac

How do you transfer info from a external hard drive from a pc to a imac?

Expanding on what Niel said, a Mac can mount and read just about any hard drive from a Windows system. It can't write to an NTFS-formatted drive without third-party drivers, but it can read them. So as Niel indicated, you should be able to just connect the drive to your Mac and drag-copy over whatever you want. If you want to save things from the Mac to that drive, then it will need to be formatted either as FAT32 or exFAT, or if it's NFTS you'll again need drivers.
    Regards.
