Transfer iTunes from an older computer to a lap top

I have my iTunes library on an older computer and want to move it to my new lap top.  I read about using an iPOD to facilitate the transfer, but I only have an iPOD touch, and it CANNOT be used for this function.  Does anyone know how I can do this with my iPOD touch?  I also have an iPAd that has the music synced on it.

Presumambly both computers can connect to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the iTunes library into the <User's Music> folder on the new one.

Yes the 2 main ways are with an ipod and external drive. Apple covers doing it with an ipod but you can follow the same steps, just skip afew http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173

If they were purchased from iTunes then you should be able to copy them over to your computer's iTunes via the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option (if you have iTunes 11 on your PC then Alt-F should get the File menu to appear).

iTunes cautions me before I upgrade to newer software, that I have iTunes paid for on iPHone that should be "transferred" to my computer.  But after synching repeatedly, I still get the same warning.  What must I do to overcome this?

    Hello, Wandering Aengus.
Thank you for the question.  You may find these articles helpful in troubleshooting the authorization and transfer of purchases issue.

Also, if the issue persists, there may be applications or media on your iPhone that was purchased with another Apple ID.

i just bought a new computer, can i transfer itunes from my old computer to my new computer with my music in it or do i have to sync all my cds again

    Hi,
A painless way to do it ...
From your Old Computer... Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..
Backup iTunes to an External Drive

An Added Bonus is that you will then have a Backup of iTunes...

how do I transfer itunes from an old computer to a new computer

Unless you've moved away from the default iTunes settings simply copying the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source machine into <User's Music> on the target computer (over a network, or via an intermediate copy on a portable drive) will transfer the library.
See this migrate iTunes library post for more.
This gives you the same library, not a new library with the same content.

How do I transfer iTunes from one computer to another?

This really depends on how technical you want to get, and how much of the library data you want to retain. First, there is getting the actual song files over to your new computer. If both computers are on the same network and are on iTunes 9, you can use home sharing to transfer the song files to your new computer.
Once the files are transferred, now you have to get all of the metadata transferred, like Playlists and Song Ratings. There is a method for doing this that involves editing your Library.xml file to transfer Playlists, Playcounts, etc..
If all you want to transfer is your Playlists and song files, there are programs that will back up your playlists so you can transfer them to a new computer, but if you're able to do the above XML edits (which are pretty simple), that is preferred (and cheaper).
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Going to college and need to transfer iTunes from home computer to labtop

What is the easiest way to transfer iTunes from one computer to another, do you suggest using a flash drive? Will that still allow me to access iTunes from both my home computer and my new labtop? Will I still be able to listen to my music from both computers? Thanks for any help!

+What is the easiest way to transfer iTunes from one computer to another,+
On the new one, download iTunes from the Apple site and install it. Copy the Music folder from the old PC to the new one. If your library contains any iTunes Store purchases, make sure to authorize the laptop to the same account.
    +do you suggest using a flash drive?+
Yes, but first compare the size of your music library to the available capacity on the flash drive. Some music libraries are bigger than a flash drive can hold, in which case you will have to do it in several batches, or use a bigger medium such as an external HD.
+Will that still allow me to access iTunes from both my home computer and my new labtop?+
    Yes.

    Yes.

  • When transfering iTunes music from an older computer to a newer computer, do the versions need to be the same on both?

When transfering itunes music from my older computer to a newer computer, do both itunes need to be the same version?

No... the target machine needs to be running the same version or better.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

How do I transfer itunes from one laptop to another?

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  (or wherever the equivalent is on Windows) then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
