Transfer itunes/iPhoto library issues

Just purchased an additional mac (EOL iMac 17"). After transferring files from MacBook Pro, received "The file "iTunes Library" couldn not be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." iMac currently has iTunes v 6.0.4.
(am currently downloading iTunes 7...hopefully will TCO iTune issue).
Problem is now with iPhoto (6.0.5). Photo transfer went fine...was viewing tranferred photos when they suddenly dissappeared without any error. The library went from several thousand photos to 14 (no accidental deletion or moves).
Has anyone had this problem? Luckily I have the photo's on external backup drive...

  • How can I transfer my iphoto library from a Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) harddrive to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) hard drive?

    Community,
Every time I try to transfer my iphoto library from a Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) harddrive to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) hard drive, I receive the attached message: "You can't copy 'iPhoto Library' because it has the same name as another ideon on the destination volume, and that volume doesn't destinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames."
My theory is, if I am able to unpackage my iphoto library, I can transfer each folder one at a time so that I can trouble shoot any "duplicates." Will this work?
Let's say that works. How can I repackage the library so iphoto recognizes it?
    Is there a better way?
    Thank you,
    Jonathan

Can we assume that I don't have any naming conflicts? Clearly there are or else I wouldn't get the error I'm getting.
The error doesn't mean you have name conflicts. It means that the Finder won't take the chance that you might have them.
You're suggesting that all I would need to do would be to use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer the files from the case-sensative harddrive to my Extended Journaled harddrive?
Yes. But I would just use the built-in rsync shell command. First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. Launch the Terminal application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press the space bar:
    rsync -aE --delete
Now drag the iPhoto library you want to copy into the window. You should have something like this:
    rsync -aE --delete /Users/you/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library
Drag the Pictures folder on the destination volume into the window. Now you have this (line will wrap on the page):
rsync -aE --delete /Users/you/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library /Volumes/something/Users/you/Pictures
Press return. The copying operation will start. When it finishes, you'll see a new dollar-sign ("$") prompt below what you entered. If there were no errors, you're done.

Copy the iPhoto Library folder or package to your new computer.

  • What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from old imac to new imac. both have iphoto 9.2.1

What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from current imac to my new imac.  Both imacs have iphoto 9.2.1
os on old imac is 10.6.8.   os on new imac is 10.7.2.   I want the albums  and events to stay intact.  I have 4500 photos and 79 videos. 14.9 gb. looking for some advice here. Thanks so much.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Is it possible to transfer my iPhoto library to an external Hard Drive?

I have noticed that my fairly new iMac computer's hard drive is almost completely full.
Is it possible to transfer my iPhoto library to an external hard drive (that I have plugged constantly into my iMac computer), and still have full functionality of all parts of iPhoto e.g. Faces, etc.?

    Hey TD,
After much reading in these posts and others you seem to be the guru on this topic. I recently bought a 1tb buffalo link station pro NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive that I copied my iphoto library to as described in previous post. I was then able to tell iphoto where the new library was, however when iphoto opens where the pic thumbnails should be are little dotted line boxes and when I scroll the mouse the pics then show up (instead of the dotted boxes) but then they slowly disappear back to dotted boxes. However if I double click on a dotted box the pic comes up normal in screen view.........any thoughts on why the dotted boxes and can't view the pics as thumbnails

  • HT201413 I keep getting error-36 when I try and transfer my iPhoto library to my hard drive. Can anyone help me please.

When I try and transfer my iphoto library from my computer to my harddrive, I keep getting error message "error-36". Can anyone help me please?

Odd, it seems.  In the Finder "Get Info" display, you are seeing something like this?
Click the "Details" triangle and then the little padlock, and you should be able to change the permissions.  Click the lock when you are done and close the Info window.

  • How do I transfer my iPhoto library from iPhone to my new computer?

How do I transfer my iPhoto library from iPhone to my computer?
My photos that I lost from my computer at the weekend are still on my iphone but I don't want to lose them and would like them back on my computer.
    Help very welcome.

The photo sync is one way only - computer to iphone.
Copy them from your backup copy of your computer.
When pics are synced to iphone they are reduced in size/quality.  You can e-mail them to yourself, but they will never be of the original quality.

  • I have Mavericks and I want to transfer my iPhoto library to an external drive

I have Mavericks and I want to transfer my iPhoto library to an external drive to free up a ton of space on my hard drive.  Can't transfer the whole thing. It says part of it is being modified. When it started it said it would take 56 days also. Is there an easy way to transfer it? In older versions of iphoto It had a lot of folders in the pictures folder under users. I could transfer bit by bit each day if I wanted.  Seems that there is only one gigantic iphoto Library now and I can't transfer the whole thing.  Can you please help?

    Hi Terence,
My OS version is Version 10.9  My iPhoto version is 9.5 (9027)
I was trying to bring it to my external drive that I use for placing random files (not a TimeMachine backup). It's a USB connection and it has a 2T storage capacity with plenty of room.
So I dragged it into the icon of the external drive and it "prepared" to transfer for a long time.  Then at the end of that, it said it couldn't tramfer because part of it was being modified.  (I can try it again to get the exact wording of this error message if you need it).  Then I clicked ok, then there was a small window that looked like a small part of the iphoto library was transfered with the timeline there and the beginning portion blue with the rest of the line empty. At the right it said 56 days remaining. =)  But that little window was frozen and wasn't doing anything.  I tried it three times and it did the same thing each time exactly as I've described.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Help! How can I restore iTunes/iPhoto library from Time Capsule to new Mac?

Sorry to trouble you, because it looks like this should be an easy thing, but I can't find an answer anywhere...
I've got an 2008 MacBook Pro that suddenly began to suffer start up problems. Sometimes it boots to a black/grey screen and sometimes the screen/mouse freezes after only a few minutes of use.
I've borrowed my brother's Mac until I can find out how to get mine repaired, so I'd like to copy over my iTunes and iPhoto stuff from a Time Capsule (where I'm hoping it hasn't been damaged) to his Mac. I only want to copy the iTunes and iPhoto stuff, without filling up his computer with all my other junk.
Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks!

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)

  • How do I transfer my iphoto library from my macbook to my imac easily?

How do I easily transfer my entire iphoto library from my macbook to my iMac?  My iMac is not new and I know I should have done this on day 1!  I also want to move my itunes.  If possible I want to avoid moving in on my external.
    Thanks

Details are critical to getting valid advice
The answer to your question is very simple. Connect the two macs together however you wish or use an external hard drive that is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library from to old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac
However your comment about the iMac being old raises the question of a critical detail you left out. Do you have an existing library on your iMac that you want to keep?  If so post back for different instructions

  • How do I transfer an iphoto library from a guest login to either another login or a thumb drive?

I am letting a friend use my computer as a surrogate for the time being to backup her phone and photos. I had never used the guest login before and didn't realize that all the files would be lost at logout. I haven't logged out yet but I need help trying to get the iphoto library onto a thumb drive. If at all possible I would like to get the backup from itunes as well.
I have already copied all of the photos out of iphoto but that doesn't save the time, date and location of them. I cannot access the folder to move the iphoto library because of it being in the guest login. I have already deleted the photos off of the phone so that is a no go.
I've been trying to search for an answer but haven't had any luck yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do i transfer my IPhoto library from one troublesome external drive to a new one?

My iPhoto library is on older external drive that I no longer trust.  How do I transfer it to a new drive?  If both are hooked up to iMac can I simply copy from one to the other?

Be sure the new drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the library intact from the old to the new drive - depress the oprion key and launch iPHoto and use the select library window to select the new location as the default - be sure to fully test the new location before trashing the old one if you plan to

  • How can I move itunes/iphoto library from SSD to HD on my new imac?

I have a lovely new imac with the SSD option. My old comps' boot disk was migrated to the SSD because it is the boot disk for the new computer. This is great and speedy but now I'd like to move my huge itunes and iphoto libraries from the SSD to the 2TB HD. I would rather not move the whole 'home' folder. I would appreciate if anyone could tell me how to do this.

Go to ~/Music/iTunes and drag & drop the iTunes Media folder to your HDD. It will not actually be moved, it will be copied. Depending on its size this can take a few minutes. When the copying is finished open iTunes and go to Preferences/Advanced. The first area is +iTunes Media folder location+. Click the Change button, browse to the location of your iTunes Media folder on the HDD and press Choose.
Quit iTunes. Then drag only the iTunes Media folder from the SSD to the Trash and empty. When you restart iTunes it will be using the media folder from it new location.
To move the iPhoto library, quit iPhoto. Got to ~/pictures and drag & drop the iPhoto Library to the HDD. It will be copied to the HDD. Drag the library on the SSD to the Trash and empty. Open iPhoto, follow the dialog in the window that appears to locate and choose your iPhoto Libray on the HDD.

  • Transfer my iphoto library to my wife's macbook

    Hi,
I have been backing up my iphoto library onto my external using time machine pretty regularly. My wife recently bought herself a Macbook Pro, and we have run across our first of a series of hurdles in trying to get these photos off the external onto her MBP. Here are some questions that I would really appreciate obtaining help in answering:
1). In attempting to import these photos off the external and into the new MBP, we run into permission errors (tried the 'browse other time machine disks' route, but navigating to the required backup terminated in a folder with a 'no-entry' sign). Is there a nice neat way around this?
    2) Is there anyway of both of us backing our iphoto libraries into one common backup on the external, or will they have to be partitioned as they currently are? I want my wife to be able to plug the external in, select and restore the albums that she wants, without having to jump through too many hoops. I understand that this may be going against the system's way of doing it. What is the best way of going about it?
    3) Lastly, (i don't know if this is the right forum, but here goes...) I thought I knew how time machine works, but I must be missing something. The very initial backup that I did contained my entire iphoto library at that point in time, right? I then proceeded to delete and add new photos into my library on my laptop, backing up regularly. So i have several backups of the various changes in the state of my library. Now, I cannot seem to restore a single event of a particular backup. Every time I try to do so, time machine restores that particular iphoto state. Any way around this?
I hope that my questions are clear.
    Thanks.
    Felix

    Greetings,
1). In attempting to import these photos off the external and into the new MBP, we run into permission errors (tried the 'browse other time machine disks' route, but navigating to the required backup terminated in a folder with a 'no-entry' sign). Is there a nice neat way around this?
Do not restore the library from the Time Machine backup to your Wife's computer. Go to your computer where the library lives and drag it onto the drive. Plug the drive into her computer and drag that library onto her computer. There are ways around the permissions issues but they are more time consuming than just copying the library from the source (your computer).
You might want to try restoring your iPhoto Library to your own computer (keep the original as well) just to reassure yourself that your backup is working correctly.
    2) Is there anyway of both of us backing our iphoto libraries into one common backup on the external, or will they have to be partitioned as they currently are?
She can backup to the same backup drive using Time Machine. Just plug the drive into her computer and tell Time Machine to use this drive. The only downsides I can think of:
__You will run out of space on the backup drive more rapidly with two computers going to the same place.
__You cannot have the drive plugged into both computers at the same time.
__If the drive fails, you lose your backup of both computers.
Time Machine does incremental backups. So every change you make is recorded for that point in time. To restore individual photos or events, launch iPhoto and go to File > Browse Backups. Click on the desired date in time in the timeline on the right, click on the image or event and then click on "Restore". This will restore that selected image / events to the current library.
    Hope that helps.

  • Photo size reduced after transfer of iphoto library

I transferred my iphoto library to new MacBook and now the photos are smaller when I open them.  The information page shows that they are the same size as the original but they do not show up the same when I click on the image?  Not sure what has happened or how to fix it.  I had the library on an MacBook air (2012) and moved the iphoto library to an external disc and then to a new MacBook.  I do not want to transfer everything from the Air, just the photo library and both machines are running Yosemite version 10.10.1

Do you still have access to the other Mac and the library you copied?  If so open iPhoto on it, open one of the problem photos and check it's pixel dimensions.  Do they match or are they different?
What version of iPhoto is on the other Mac?
