Transfer Lightroom Catalog from PC to PC

I have purchased a new PC(Vista OS) and want to transfer my existing photos from my old PC(XP OS) to the new one. I have Lightroom 1.4 loaded on both PCs. I'd like to keep all the edits and preferences I had made in Lightroom from the old PC. I have an external hard drive. What is the best way or next steps I need to make in order to make for a seamless migration of my photos and catalog? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • How to transfer Lightroom settings  from one catalog to another?

Lightroom 5. I have combined two catalogs into one "Master Catalog" per Julian Kosts tutorial ( http://tv.adobe.com/watch/adobe-evangelists-julieanne-kost/lr3-merging-individual-lightroo m-catalogs-into-a-master-catalog-/ ) without incident. However, my presets are not to be found. Could there be other issues? How Do I properly get these presets into my Master Catalog?
How to transfer Lightroom settings  from one catalog to another?

    Nevermind.
Per the turorials, this is suppose to occur automatically.
In the rare event that it does not, forced by lack of support through Adobe or the forums, I am relagated to resolve my problem the old fasjion way. Guessing at a solution of dragging and dropping (risking overwritting current the newer LR5 files (careful now).
I love the product but trying to get problem resolution here has been disapointing.
I'd like to retract this entire question session.

  • How do I transfer Lightroom 4 from the old computer to the new computer?

I recently bought a new desktop computer with Windows 7.  How do I transfer Lightroom 4 from the old computer to the new computer?

You simply install it like the first time. You only need to run Help --> Deactivate on teh old system to free up the activation.

  • Can I move the Lightroom Catalog from one location to another?

Lightroom by default, places the Lightroom Catalog in the Pictures folder on my PC. My image library though, is located on an external hard drive. I've read that it is better to have the Catalog at the same location to avoid disconnected images, which sounds reasonable. Is it feasable to move the Catalog over to the same drive as my image library, or will that cause a problem? In other words would I need to start over again and create a new Catalog on the external drive? I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I've learnt to my cost that the obvious solution isn't necessary the correct one.

For better performance it is preferable to have the catalog located on an internal hard drive. By default the catalog and the preview files have to be located in the same folder since there is continual read/write taking place while working in Lightroom. Lightroom does not make any changes to the original files so its fine for them to be located on another hard drive internal or external. Lightroom loves lots of hard disk space to operate so if your catalog is on an internal drive make sure it not starved for disk space.
However its ok for your catalog/previews files to reside on an external HDD with your original photo files.
Your photo files can reside on a HDD conected to a network but your catalog and preview files cannot be located on a network.
e.g I have my catalog / previews on the main HDD with my operating system with over 50% free disk space. My Photo files are on a secondary internal HDD with over 75% free disk space. I back up to external HDD.

  • Is it possible to transfer a catalog from PSE4 to PSE11?

I am having difficulties in transferring my catalog from PSE4, on my old PC, to PSE11 on my new one. The main problem relates to the position of captions in images in full screen mode. In an online chat yesterday with an Adobe Technical Support guy, I was advised that a PSE4 catalog cannot be upgraded to PSE11. He suggested that it may be possible to achieve this by transferring the catalog from PSE4 to PSE6 or 9 and from there to PSE11, although he subsequently indicated that this may not resolve the difficulties either. Surely this cannot be correct, can it?

While I have no experience going from PSE4 to PSE11, the docs don't say there are any limitations on which earlier versions can be upgraded.

Like much of the advice you get from Adobe, I think this is way off the mark — but I have never tried this either

I have no idea what you mean by this, could you provide a screen capture?

  • How do I transfer my catalog from my PC to my new MacBook?

I have Elements 6 on my PC, and have just bought a MacBook, on which I have installed Elements 6 for Mac. How do I transfer 12,000 images across to the Mac, preserving all the tags etc.?

As you’ve discovered, Elements 6 for Mac comes with Bridge (a file browser on steroids) rather than Organizer (a database on vitamin pills).
I did a little research on iPhoto last fall, and it appears that you can import the date/time, keywords, and captions from the PSE 6 catalog.  But you can’t import PSE’s notes, ratings, version sets, stacks, albums, slideshows, or keyword hierarchy.  See this thread for more details:
    http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showpost.php?p=417843&postcount=4
Since you have a large catalog, you might consider Lightroom for Mac, which I believe can import an Elements 6 catalog (you may have to convert to Lightroom for Windows first, I’m not sure).

  • Lightroom catalogs from images stored on DVD'S

I have hundreds of DVD disks that I want to Catalogue.  I import the files using just the ADD function into a newly created collection, yet once he DVD is ejected the files loose their path.
I thought that files from external media did not have to exist on a hard drive to be catalogued.  I used Portfolio before this adventure into Lightroom and I had nop problem at all.
I have studied  tutorials and the only discussion within these lessons is about files on connected hard drives or RAID systems.
    Any advice is welcome.
    PD

    HI,
Lr does not really support the workflow you want. You want to catalog dvd's with LR. So, if you eject the dvd the path in Lr will be your dvd rom. Not usefull.
You can try the following work around: import the dvd an use some of the metadata fields (exif, iptc or keywords) to store the name of your dvd in it. You can use the search inside Lr to find the contents of a dvd or you can brows your catalog, find an image and read the metadata to find out on which dvd the image is stored.
You can also use the collection feature and create a collection for every dvd.
It might be usefull to set the following cataloge settings: generate 1:1 previews and do not delete previews.

  • Trabsfer catalog from MacBook to iMac

Just back from location and want to transfer Lightroom Catalog from Laptop to Desktop, Ideas on the easiest route appreciated. No reliable access to cloud storage.

Where is the catalog stored. If it's on an external hard drive, SD card or thumb drive you can simply import it as a catalog. Otherwise you may need to export it first.
I regularly use a travel catalog on my laptop using a high speed SD card for the catalog and images. I then combine it with my master catalog on the desktop machine by importing.
See this video tutorial for further information:

I need to know how to transfer my catalog from my desk top
to my new laptop. On my lap top I have Elements 9 and on my desktop I have Elements 8.
So different version, different computer. Also, will the keywords, tags, transfer along? I have at least 10,000 pictures on my desdtop.
    Thanks.

Thank you, that is exactly what I was looking for!

  • Is it possible to work on the same files/catalog from two different computers?

My wife and I are photographers and work on two separate iMacs.  We just purchased an NAS and would like to know if we can both access the same files AND the Lightroom catalog from our respective computers.  All of the files are on the NAS but I can't figure out how to get her computer to recognize the catalog.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    -Brent

Another option, since you already have the nas, is to get something like "Synchronize! Pro X",and use the nas to transfer the catalog back and forth.  You don't have to USB the catalog, just transfer it to the nas each time you are done, and before you start...
Of course, I think both solutions are based on you not editing at the same time... i.e., both of you are making changes, as neither approach will work for that!
    Cheers!

  • Move Lightroom catalog containing images located on a NAS

    Hello,
I want to move my Lightroom catalog from my old PC to my new iMac.
The catalog contains only images located on a NAS.
I can connect to the NAS from both computer, but when I'm trying to ´import the catalog I get the message "Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error"
I use the same versions of Lightrrom on both computers.
Does anyone know how to solve this?
    Best regards

Finally I figured out how to solve this!
I opened the catalog containing NAS images and pointed the missing files to the NAS-location.
Then I opened the main catalog and imported the NAS-catalog. It worked!
    Thank you TubbeAh!

  • Lightroom 5 do not recognise catalog from external HDD

I am using Lightroom 5 now. In the earlier version, I was able to create catalog & save them in external HDD. Similarly I could open any catalog from external HDD with the lrcat file extension.
However, in the current version, it does not allow me to create catalog nor retrieve catalog from external HDD.
This means that I have to either transfer all the raw files to the HDD from the external HDD and then create the catalog in the laptop. After finishing all the editing, then copy and transfer everything back to the external HDD.
I cannot imagine if whenever I have to edit something, I have to keep doing transfer between the laptop HDD & external HDD.
    Any experts can advise?

I am using LR 5.2 and I do not have this problem. My Raw files are on an external hard drive and my catalog together with its previews and Smart Previews and the CR Cache folder are all on a USB 3.0, 64 GB memory stick. The only thing on the laptop's (Windows 7) internal drive is the LR application. I turn on the external only when importing or exporting/printing and editing is done through the Smart Previews. This setup works smooth as silk for me, so I think you also should be able to work from the external.
When you write "it does not allow me to create catalog nor retrieve catalog from external HDD," what do you mean? If you go to File/New Catalog, does the external not appear on the system navigation window that opens? If you go to File/Open Catalog, does the external not appear on the system navigation window that opens? If, with LR closed, you use Explorer or Finder to go to an .lrcat file on the external and double-click it, does this launch LR?

  • How do I transfer my catalog, files and collections into Lightroom 4 onto another computer?

How do I transfer my catalog, files and collections into Lightroom 4 onto another computer?

You can copy your image file  from you PC to your Mac over your home network or via DVD/CD.  You can not install you PC CS5.1 version on you Mac. Its not compatible with MAC OS.  You would need a MAC version of CS5.1 and Mac version serial number to activate it.  Adobe no longer markets CS5 so you most likely will not be able to pay for a platform switch media install.

  • Backing up catalog from inside of lightroom extremely slow (30 min)

I have a catalog that is just under 5gb, if I navigate to the folder where it is stored and copy paste it onto my backup drive it copies in under 2 min. However, if I chose to backup my catalog on exit from inside lightroom it takes over 30 minutes (not counting testing etc). Obviously I can backup my catalog manually, but it would be nice if the built in backup feature worked like it's supposed to.
    I'm running win 7 64
lightroom 64 same probelm in 4.3 and 4.4
the catalog and lightroom are stored on a ssd drive
backing up to a NAS ( my typical transfer speeds are 60-80 MB/s)
    Thanks for any thoughts
    -Dan

I tried to the local ssd with only a small improvement. Like I said, if I navigate to the catalog manually and copy and paste it to the NAS it takes under 2 minutes... (80+ MB/s), but done through lightroom it just crawls.  Lightroom either has a bug, or it's doing something much more than just copying the catalog to the selected directory. I've tried it with and with out check and optimize.

A 5 GB Lr catalog is a hefty catalog. But 30 min seems a bit long even for that. I suspect that the NAS drive or its connection speed are slowing things down.Try this: Create a catalog backup from within Lr to an internal drive to check whether that will speed up the process.
